Yes I am persistent. If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.

My last forum thread was closed because it did not contain a discussion question. Okay, I’m not mad, I’m just learning.

Most of what I know about vampires comes from the fact that I am an avid reader. One Author of whom I am a huge fan is the young, the talented, the beautiful Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, who wrote her first book, In the Forest of the Night, at only thirteen. She is an inspiration to aspiring authors (like myself) and, in my opinion, the epitome of the great vampire author.

So, Has anyone out there read the vampire books by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes? If so, did you like them? Why or why not? What are some of her strengths and weaknesses as a writer? Do you think her theory on vampire culture/behavior holds any truth?

I hope this thread will survive.

To Sevenn,

There are a few different things she mentions, but one stands out on my mind. She writes about some vampires have humans blood bonded to them, meaning the human can not die until the vampire does. I have yet to figure out full details on the bloodbond. I believe it enables them to control the human, much like a slave. This brings me to the book Midnight Predator, where humans were bought and sold as slaves in a vampire community known as Midnight. Some vampires saw this as a right, some saw it as cruelty.

She also talks a lot about blood claim. This law says that when a human fights a vampire and draws blood, no vampire is allowed to kill that human without permission from the injured vampire.

If anything elce comes to mind I will post it.

To dragonspawn,

I would recommend The Shattered Mirror to a first time reader of Atwatter-Rhodes. In this book, a vampire hunter is confronted with a difficult decision of weather or not to befriend the vampire she is falling in love with. In this book, like most of her others, the line between good and evil is blurred and uncertain.

If you are not a fan of the romance, don’t worry. It is subtle enough that it will not distract from the main plot. That is just the part that sticks out in my mind, because I am a hopeless romantic.

I absolutely love all of her books, she is an excellent writer. The only problem I really have with any of her books is that they are too short. However, she has been getting better as she writes more so that's not much of an issue. As to the issue of if her theory holds any truth, I honestly can't say.

I'm an avid Amelia fan as well. I've read all her books and am looking forward to more in her Vampire line (as she's working on shapeshifters right now). I like how she takes a new approach to Vampires. Unlike most authors who follow with the traditional "Vampire" characteristics, she steps out of the box and molds them more to her liking. For instance, in her books, Vampires can walk in sunlight and only a Witches blade can harm them. Vampires can shapeshift as well, in the first book the girl can become a tiger and a bird (think it was an owl, but I can't remember). Most live in a secret community, New Mayem (highest Vampire population in the states), but in her later books their precence seems to be known, like in Shattered Mirror where they join a community as "equals" (humans, Witches and Vampires all living under the same roof without killing each other). It seems that Witches and not humans (sometimes both) are the main threat to Vampires :(

I've read almost all her books. I tried to read The Kiesha'ra series but really couldnt get into it. My personal favorite is Midnight Predator or maybe Demon in my view I can't really choose. Her writings are what got me into vampires and were all I knew about vampires until I discovered other writers. So for a long time I believed all her theorys on vampire culture.

I have read all of Amelia's books, one thing that I have noticed is in everyone of her vampire books is the blood right or blood claim. If a human draws the blood of a vampire then that vampire has the right to kill that human. Even if that human belongs to another vampire.

I love her books. The blood right/blood claim, I agree is ever present. I haven't read any of her books in a while, but if I were to choose a favorite, I'd probably choose Demon In My View....

I love her... I have read all of the books by her, and I'm waiting for her new one in September! :) Yes, I believe her theorys are true... she writes too accurately for her to not have some sort of knowledge in that area. She herself may even be a vampire... who knows, right? :)

I've read her books, they aren't that great actually they kind of suck she puts no detail into her sotry, there really isn't much of a plot, and it only took me thirty minutes to read a book by her...I don't know i have friends that are into them but personally I like Anne Rice and others like her for my Vampire books

What you write about her being a vampire reminds me of Demon in my View where she wrote about the things she had no idea they that were actually true, then it turns out her blood had a vampiric taint, so all that information just entered her mind. Maybe that’s where she got the idea.

I've read almost all her books, except the latest two. I remember loving them to death, but I agree someone above said they are too short. Her idea's I think are likely, but being a bit of a skeptic I believe they are great ideas for fiction.

I actually enjoyed the Kiesha'ra series more than her vampire books, I didn't feel they were very involved. Although, it has been a few years since I read them so I'm probably forgetting main details to the plot.

Personally I am a big fan of her vampire books but not so much of the other ones...It's not easy for me to picture the serpent people or the hawk people the way I think she's trying to describe them. Her vampires always came out lovely in my mind though.
