We, I would imagine, have all heard the myth of the river styx...My question is this.

There dwells a place between here and there, life and death, but does exist on this plane, a place called Meridian...Apparently this place is where the dead come to greet the living that wish to visit their loved ones, or the ones of whom had passed.

Any one aside from me heard of Meridian? Another fact that the river styx borders the city of Meridian as well.

I have been doing studies on this place for a very long time, but I would love to hear what you think.

Sadly to say all that I have ever read on this would be from Clive Barker's Cabal, but him being an odd author does get interesting points that make it more real then most would probably want it to seem. Aside from that I am curious to know as well. Thanks for the post.

Never heard of Meridian apart from it's normal usage. Midian however has several Hebrew references as well as the Clive Barker one from Cabal and Nightbreed. Are you sure it's Meridian not Midian?

That is where the juncture for wording gets lost. I have not read clive barkers books, I have seen the movie Nightbreed. But the cross between meridian and midian...Midian is a fictional location, meridian is the border city between here and there. Thus the city is called meridian. As in prime meridian...The center point.

Meridian sounds familiar to me, but i am not for sure...

Midian was also referenced in the Bible by the ancient Hebrews, if I remember correctly it was the area/tribe where the Burning Bush was situated.

hmm...something about an underground river in a catacomb in Greece, Italy or some such part of the old world....comes to mind.....

No, I haven't heard of Meridian. But I have heard of the river styx and most of the myths and legends about that, I will look up meridian and if I find any thing worth posting I will post it here.

If you listen to the notions of St Germaine, then you have to find a place where there is fire as a river, as the river styx is merely the Violet flames.

Though I've never heard of it referred to as an actual plain of existence the idea seems fitting to some form of interface, one such as the example you have already given - the river. I believe in many Christian sects it would be referred to as Purgatory.

Midian, however, I don't believe is fictional. I think that, just as Canaan's name changed several times along with its borders, Midian's name changed. It should be an area in or near Egypt.

That notwithstanding, the two locations should not be confused, Midian being geographical and Meridian being spiritually dimensional.

I love it what two differant worlds turn out to be one and the same, if it were in Egypt, that would be an excellent place, considering the mystical locations from ancients past. A voilet river seems pretty wicked if you ask me, true in nature...I would not discard the theory. Considering name changes over the centuries, I would not discount meridian, or midian being someplace such as say...Cairo, or more far fetched...Equator...(Chuckles)...Sorry, could not help it.

That's funny- I kinda did feel like I was in a place between life and death while in training for my job for the Marine Corps back in 1992.

I was then stationed in Meridian, Mississippi :P

I have heard of the river Styx before, but not of Meridian. I would assume that if Meridian existed, it could be compared with places where paranormal activities take place, and that would be all over the globe. However, I would be more than interested in learning about this Meridian place.

The only thing -I- have heard of similar to this is purgatory..

But then again, I may have read about it, as the name does sound familiar.. I haven't read anything about it in a very long time, or the river, though I used to study related topics quite often of my own desire.

In Greek mythology, "the River Styx" (Στυξ) is a river which formed the boundary between Earth and the Underworld, Hades. It circles Hades nine times. The river Styx, Phlegethon, Acheron and Cocytus all converge at the center of Hades on a great marsh. The other important rivers of Hades are Lethe and Eridanos. Styx is guarded by Phlegyas, who passes the souls from one side to another of the river. In other versions, Phlegyas guards Phlegethon, another of the main rivers of Hades. Sometimes the ferryman is called Charon.

The gods respected the Styx and swore binding oaths by it. Zeus swore to give Semele whatever she wanted and was then obliged to follow through, resulting in her death. Helios similarly promised Phaëton whatever he desired, also resulting in his death. Gods that did not follow through on such an oath had to drink from the glass, causing them to lose their voices for nine years. According to some versions, Styx had miraculous powers and could make someone immortal/invunerable. Achilles may have been dipped in it in his childhood, acquiring invulnerability, with exception of his heel, which was held by his mother in order to submerge him. His exposed heel thus became known as Achilles' heel, a metaphor for a weak spot in modern meaning.

other then the myth behind the river styxx Ive never heard of the meridian theory
although Im sure it is some where out there. and can be researched into giving more accurate writings on this subject.

As for it being in a clive barker movie it could definitely just be some fabrication that someone thought would be cool in adding the myth of the styxx into the world.

Actually, I have a good friend who has taken his name after this mythical place. So, yes, I have heard of it. Interesting that a meridian is a line signifying some sort of demarkation.... hmmmmm.....

I believe it comes from the myths spawned during the dark age...

I have heard of the Meridian but can not recall where form though. It was referred to as "Middle Realm," a place where otherkin(d) and spirits can meet up with those who are passing on or stuck in the "in between." It is also called "The Void," since it exist on another plane in between this realm and the next.

In some books that have references to dealing with spirits on their plane of existence this is suppose to be a meeting place for such an undertaking.

I have heard of Meridian and the river styxx. I have come across it on occasion in a lot of greek mythology, mostly the river styxx.

But I also believe many religions have similar stories or myths that border upon this idea of a place where the soul rests when the body is ill and can meet with their ancestors and converse with them. Or go to them to seek knowledge or advice on matters.

So in my view if so many religions can convere upon one ideal without borrowing from each other then perhaps a place called Meridian can exist if we believe strongly enough that it does.

i cant say i have ever heard of it but in one of my spell books they have talked about a place called Summerland it says it is a place where the spirits think about about the lives they have lived and plan where they will come back next. this is what it says exactly Summerland is where spirits go after death to rest and reflect in the company of the god and goddess, and deside how they are going to reincarnate. In Wicca their is no heaven or hell. i found this to be a very interesting read. The book is written bye Denise zimmermann and Katherine A. Gleason

i thought the rive styx was just in greek and roman mythology

Having researched different ancient lettering and languages (a smidge) I wonder if the English transliteration corrupted the original intent of the word. For instance - In Greece (and other old Christian countries) the Tau cross looks like the Roman letter T. This being from a corruption of the translation of an Old Testament entry where God told a chosen few to run through a city he was preparing to destroy and place a mark on the foreheads of people they wished to be spared.

During the time that the original text was written, the letter would have been more Phoenician in style and therefor the "mark" would have looked like an X, also known as Tau and whose definition is literally "mark".

Isn't the river Styx the border between life and death? That's always filled with a hazy fog? With the skeletal ferryman that ferries souls to death?

i know the river styxx is in greek mythology but didnt know it was in egyptian as well
