I have read, *in fiction of course* that a vampire can't catch the lycanthrophy disease and that were-animals can't get infected by vampires. why do you think this is? What would cause this?

I believe there are people that are half lycan and half vampire. I know a few of them. However the reason why I think that a vampire cannot become a lycan is because you are born a vampire or a lycan or a mixture. I don't really believe in turning.

It depends on genetics. The chromosomes that the vampire "disease" replaces can't then be replaced by the lycan or were-animal "disease".
But a hybrid that is born is a different story, because then you have genetic mutation and the two different strands of chromosomes forming together. Unless one does not carry over and the other stays dominant. Which is possible, a vampire mother and lycan/were-animal father could have a dominant vampire or dominant lycan/were-animal child, or they could produce a hybrid.

you've read the wrong fiction - try reading R. Chetwynd Hayes.

a cross between a werewolf and a vampire is a werevamp. a cross between a werewolf and a ghoul is a weregoo, a cross between a vampire and a ghoul is a vamgoo. hybrids can also mate with each other to produce a maddy, a raddy, and a shaddy. if a raddy was to mate with a shaddy or a maddy, the result would be a mock. if a mock was to mate with any other hybrid the result is a shadmock. shadmocks only whistle.

I think that vampires can't catch lycanthropy because they are undead and lycanthropy is a warm-blooded disease, kind of like rabies.

Now I'm not sure if a vampire could turn a werewolf into a vampire or not. I would guess not since werewolves regenerate so fast that a vampire just wouldn't be able to kill it even it it could drain all the lycan's blood.

Think of it this way, Can you breed a dog with a cat, no, that is because they have a different genetic makeup, Lycans and Vampires are both hereditary (bloodline) Carriers of their own... disorder, to put it nicely, therefore I would assume they are immune to the others, however if you can find credible evidence of inter-species reactions I would like to know, this is a very interesting topic.

lol So far everybody seems to be looking at this as if it were a disease. In older myth both were considered curses. And bum bum bum. Curses Stack. While the Werewolf curse affected the living. the Vampire curse was usually attached to the dea. So what keeps a dead Werewolf from coming back as a Vampire? Nothing.

Though the idea of a Werewolf with large bat like wings is somewhat interesting. lol

The fiction vampire is dead...or undead really but a walking corpse.

The werewolf is an infection or disease. Last time I checked my fiction vampire handbook, vampires were pretty well immune to disease and infection. That sort of takes them out of the running.

Now whether an infected human werewolf would be cured of his lycanthropy by dying (ie becoming a vampire)...again...when we consult our fiction werewolf guide (part of the fiction monsters guidebook set...just $34.95)...we see that in almost every fiction tale of werewolves...upon death, they return forever to human form...cured in death as it were...so undeath since it first involves dying...would likely cure them.

That means there's really not a way to have a vampire werewolf...except for the fact that anything is possible in fiction and it was already done in Underworld.

The 'spices' of life, Lajah?

The original question did bring up fiction...so curses and diseases (as well as DNA a la Underworld) are perfectly rational.

Lajah,

I personally have always viewed both Vampires and Werewolves as evolutionary
developments than our forefathers could not explain and so they became curses.

But as Felix said. The Original question was discussing myth and fiction so movie based ideas are as viable as any.

I am not sure but I have always wondered this my self, I guess because the vampire's blood would resist the infection of the wolf bite the same with the were wolf. Like maybe there is something in their blood that is more advanced and after being changed then once they are bitten by something else the thing in their blood kills off the infection before it can change them.

I'd think that it has to do with them being radically different states.

Vampirism has to do with dying. You die, wether by vampire bite, being a suicide, being executed, etc., and you rise from your grave after a set time (which varies by mythic tradition). Also, you're constantly a vampire. There is no 'trigger' for your condition; you either are, or are not.

Lycanthropy, on the other hand, is isolated to living beings. Also, bein a werewolf is a 'triggered' condition. Usually the full moon brings this on, but I'm sure there are stories from parts of the world that have thier werecritters transforming under different triggers. Also, while in man-animal form, the victim is thought to be consumed with a nearly mindless, animalistic urge for violence.

*shrugs* Just my thoughts on the subject.

Im gonna have to go with the idea that they are both different states. In theory it could be possible that both states could exist in one person, but wouldnt it overload the system? Although, blood lust is blood lust, you know? Would it matter which form you had while exacting it?

Umm, I'm gonna have to go with the Idea of the virus changing the chromosome structure of the "victim", once the disease has taken effect, and the Dna is different in the host, the other virus wouldn't have the same effect, so theoreticly once you have been turned by one, you cannot be affected by the other.

As far as the possibility of a Hybrid, if the two were to mate and the chromosomes were to b half vampiric and half lycan i think it would be possibe due to the fact that certain animals with similar dna structure can create offspring, though the offspring is usually infertile. I'm not sure if a Lycan Vamp Hybrid would be able to reproduce though, because the virus only changes the chromosomal structure, it doesn't add a chromosome, so a hybrid should ba able to reproduce, but I'm not a geneticist no I really couldn't tell you.

Not combined viruses, combined effects of the viruses, after the virus has taken effect.

The dna of the host is changed so if a vamp and a lycan were to have sex and one impregnated the other the offspring would have 23 chromosomes affected by lycanthropy and 23 affected by vampirism.

Tis might result in a hybrid, or it might just not work at all. Like I said I'm not really sure.

True, but if the virus keeps the body functioning, with a healthy supply of blood of course, so that the vampire can walk, speak, and things of that sort one could argue that the virus keeps cells functioning after death, in which case the reproductive cells shouldn't be an exception. So a vampire should be able to reproduce.

At least that's what I think, going by basic genetic theories they teach in high school biology.

*returns smile* Sounds fun, I love a good debate.

And you are right about that, in some works all the vampire's body fluids are replaced by blood and they are incapable of reproduction, so depending on who's ideas you decide to agree with, there could be a million answers to this question.

Also I just had a thought, which might be a good topic for a thread, I'm just pretty sure I can't post a new thread yet.

WolvesDogs communicate by different barks, howls, and other noises usually having meanings like "i found food" or "there's a threat nearby" and body laguuage such as flattening out ears is used as well, and all of this is from instinct, it's not taught to them by parents or anything, like a human language. What I'm wondering is would Lycans, who generally are thought to pick up animalistic instincts upon infection, be able to interperate these barks and gestures and then be able to communicate with the animals on some greater level than a human would?

I would say that if you are talking fiction then anything is possible someone just has to tell the story. If you are talking about real life with people that believe themselves to be vampire or lycans then again I'd say anything is possible if that person believes it.

ok here goes.
a vampire is in need of new blood to sustain its body where as a lycan lives for the carnage and the flesh.it uses every part of the body as food.so there for one is a true disease where the other is simply an evolution or as some would liketo believe a de evolution.that is why i think that you cant get infected with the other strain.

Depending on the part of the world you are looking at there is a myth that when a werewolf dies they rise as a vampire if the proper rituals are not performed. This would also mean that a vamp could not become a werewolf again.

I would guess since lycanthrops already have a disease, that they are probably immune to the vampire disease, but other than that i would not know...
