(I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but...here we go...)
Okay, so what is "sin" exactly? Some would have you believe that sin is a particular act or thought, but I believe that these so called "sins" are actually very normal, natural, and acceptable emotions for all people. Yes, I do believe in sin, but I do not believe that everyone thinks of sin in the same way. Let me focus on the big 7...the Seven Deadly Sins.
Many people believe that these 7 unforgivable sins are ones that send your soul to Hell, I on the other hand believe that in moderation (like all things) they are not only natural, but beneficial. So, without further ado, I will go through each of the Seven Deadly Sins and reveal their moderate and their excessive effects...
Sin #1: Lust
Now Lust is one of the most basic of these 7 sins, and is believed to be the pursuit of sexual or sensual desires. But is it really? For example, if someone wants to have children isn't that lust? Don't people need to make love to reproduce (naturally)? And if you have very strong feelings for someone, isn't it natural to want to have sex with them? I believe that sex is not so much the sinful Lust, it is basic nature for all peoples. However, I do believe that taking it to excess, such as being too loose or risque, is very much a sin. When you willingly put yourself in danger by having sex with multiple partners, especially without a basic set of ground rules such as using protection and knowing the person(s) properly before hand...that is what makes Lust a sin.
Sin #2: Gluttony
What is Gluttony? Is it truly eating or is it eating to excess? But then again, isn't the entire country not full of all you can eat places? And isn't there more or less at least one special event in which we all eat to excess in every country all over the world? So what makes a person a glutton? I believe that it is when someone continuously eats out of self pity or pain, I understand that if it's a matter of depression, yes one would want to drown their sorrows in food...but there are better ways, and to know that and still rely on food or drink for comfort, then that is what makes Gluttony a sin.
Sin #3: Sloth
Who doesn't enjoy a good long rest at night or taking naps or likes to lounge about all day? Does that make someone a Sloth? I don't think so. I believe that wanting to lay back and recharge one's batteries is one of the most basic and natural of things to do. But, once again, there is a catch...I do believe that under it all, if one pushes their responsibilities back constantly and do nothing to better one's self, then yes, that is what makes Sloth a sin.
Sin #4: Pride
I am strong and willful and dominant and handsome, I’ll be honest…and there’s no shame in being confident, is there? I didn’t think so. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with thinking highly of yourself, especially when you’ve achieved something for yourself. Everyone should be proud of something, whether it’s their achievements or their families or their beliefs…everyone should have something to be proud of. However, when someone or a group of people believe that they are above others because of something, then that becomes a sin. For anyone to view themselves above the system or above other’s beliefs because of their own, that is what makes Pride a sin.
Sin #5: Greed
Who wants more? Who wants more money for that big house that they want? Who wants a better job? Who wants that perfect woman (or man in other cases)? Doesn’t everyone want this? Does that make us all sinful greedy people? No, it means that we just want what makes us happy and what we need. Yes, greed can be a person’s own worst enemy, but it can also be the driving force for someone to strive to do more. Now, then again, it is possible that someone takes what they want without earning it, which is wrong…what we have should be earned or given as a gift, taking what we want without taking the time and putting in the effort to earn it, that’s what makes Greed a sin.
Sin #6: Envy
Doesn’t everyone have those moments where they see their dream car being driven by someone else and they say to themselves “Wow, I want that car. That car should be mine.”? Of course they do…it’s natural, not everything or everyone you want will be completely free and within your grasp, sometimes someone else will beat you to it and you’ll still want it. Now, sometimes a person will want to take what they see someone else have, and that’s unacceptable! It’s fine to want the same kind of girl the neighbor wants, but it’s not okay to take her away from him…it’s not that Envy is bad, it’s just how you go about it. Wanting something is fine, having envious feelings towards another person is fine, but if one tries to steal it away from another person…that’s what makes Envy a sin.
Sin #7: Wraith
Anger…anger is a natural emotion, it’s as natural as love, or sadness, or joy. To want vengeance for hurting someone you love or care about, is a natural thing…it’s a normal emotional response that no one should ever feel ashamed about. Now of course learning to control one’s anger is a must. Losing one’s temper when it’s not necessary or appropriate, that’s an issue that must be worked out immediately. Learning to control one’s rage is a test of one’s character…but it’s when one does nothing to retrain one’s own aggressive tendencies that Wraith becomes a sin.
Very interesting. Sin as basic as I can define as taken from the christian bible since that is the only holy book I am familiar with is one word. Disobedience.
Sorry, chummer... I don't believe in sin. I believe in a moral code of ethics, yes. But to sin? Since by some, it could be defined as disobedience... But what if someone doesn't believe in the thought of the judeo-christian idea of hell?
In my mind, a guilty conscience tells me things are bad by a feeling in the pit of my stomach and thus I don't act on actions when negative vibes are felt.
Remember kids, one mans fun is anothers hell... but only in the context that hell is a creation of the mind and nothing more unless you value religious ideals and beliefs.
sin is a beleif, and it depends on many influence, religious, location, age, entourage, family and friends, one might see a sin where an other wil see a way of living, another will see a sin where someone else will see a simple inconvenicence, it all depends 99% of the time of outside factors that have formed you and your beleif or view of things and life.
No one can really say what is a sin and what is not, it is not just a religious thing, as many will mixt religion with politics and other stuff.
sounds like someone reads Jean Paul Sartre...
I am no longer sure of anything. If I satiate my desires, I sin but I deliver myself from them; if I refuse to satisfy them, they infect the whole soul.
besides to "sin" is soo much more fun
Sin only exists in the minds of those who choose to condemn others for actions that they define as unacceptable to their own personal standards defined by their personal bias and prejudical views established through enculturation within their limited perception.
The idea of sin comes from religious views and it varies by ideology of the different groups. I personally think sin is merely a judgment and nothing more.
On one site they had this to say:
"We are told in Romans 5: 12 that by one man, Adam, sin entered the world. This was the origin of sin. It goes on six times in Romans 5 to say that sin came into the world by one man; it is by one man's offence, by one man's transgression. He emphasises that the origin of sin was with one man. Now Adam didn't even talk to the snake so you can't start connecting Adam with the snake. So it was by Adam that sin came into the world. That is what we are told. We are not told anything in Genesis about Satan, Lucifer or the Devil, or things like that. So that is another question that we need to have answered."

The thing is this is only one view of that word and the word may be solely accounted for by that particular belief system period.
In word IQ the etymology of the word is this:
"The English word sin derives from Old English synn. The same root appears in several other Germanic languages, e.g. Old Norse synd, or German Sünde. The word may derive, ultimately, from *es-, one of the Indo-European roots that meant "to be," and is a present participle, "being." Latin, also has an old present participle of esse in the word sons, sont-, which came to mean "guilty" in Latin. The root meaning would appear to be, "it is true;" that is, "the charge has been proven." The Greek word hamartia is often translated as sin in the New Testament; it means "to miss the mark" or "to miss the target"."
http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Sin
The Catholic Church has the modern sins as well now. Personally if one is to use this word from a non religious viewpoint I would think it would be any act that is not acceptable to the society one belongs to at the time. I think it gets equated to a crime against humanity.
i agree with Lord Doru and sight Sartres play "no exit"
where he makes the point that other people make it hell..thus ..exactly what is sin..just as hell is different for each person sin would be also..sin is what we are told it is and made to believe by the religious organizations where ever it happens you live just as every person is different so must be the definition of sin ...thought up as a way to keep people in line so to speak
WOw..excellent thread. My humble opinion. From Serial Killers, to pedophile, in their mind, there is no sin for their act, because sin, is an act of Morality combine with religion and believe. I, personally don't believe in sin. I can admire a marry woman, which to be with her and at the same time, brake the heart of her husband. For some, because my thinking, I am sinning i the eye of god. But, in the eye of a normal person, I am not. Sin, only exist in the eye of the beholder.
Wow, very interesting opinions everyone...but to be honest, I believe that I sate each of these desires to a certain degree. I have lust, I have sloth cause I stay up all night and sleep in the morning, I am a glutton for many things...I have envy, greed...I have pride for sure! And wraith, oiy vay, I have enough rage to overtake the american continent...north and south!

I am going to try to make this simple and sweet for the purpose of understanding:
Everyone lusts after something. The spiritualist inside us all wishes to avoid lusting after material things and thus become one with the universe, but what if that lust is for the universe and that spiritualist dedicates their entire lives to that lust for the universe by remaining spiritual for the rest of their days, what then?
It is not called sloth because you stay up all night and sleep in the morning... sloth is sleeping like a depressed individual does without wanting to get out of bed at anytime of the day or night, so that being stated, you do not carry sloth with you unless you sleep all day everyday and refuse to take part in daily or nightly activities. Hell, I "could" carry sloth just by playing video games all day... but that is just me.
We are all gluttons for many things... though I think the context is for food. I loves me some pizza, ice cream, chicken corn chowder and chicken fettuccini alfredo! Though gluttony is to take in too much of one thing then commit the acts of both binging and purging then repeat.
I don't really count pride though... I have pride for myself and how I dress. I have pride for my bloodline for my ancestry. I have immense pride in who I am as an individual, there is nothing wrong with that. Pride and self confidence go hand in hand.
What I believe I am trying to state here is that when those 7 deadly sins came about, religious institutions must have been severely shallow back in the most ancient of days because of what they considered as sins back then.
Final words for this post and food for thought:
Epicurus - “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
Carry on...
All I know is that I better do something about my Vanity and Lust because if not Im going to be in some big trouble...........
These are my beliefs.
We are human, sin is in our nature. We can't be expected not to sin. We can't help ourselves from getting angry, or having desires to sin. However, we can stop ourselves from actually committing the sin. When we intentionally do something that we know is wrong, that's a sin.
We all get angry. However, if you go out and kill somebody because you're angry...you get my point.
but it all comes down to..sin is just something we were told to believe..made up by religious organizations and peoples... one of my most favorite quote " some rise by sin and by virtue fall.".....sin is just a thought
Well in my opinion,
These seven sins are part of majorly 4 group, 1 lust, 2 anger. 3 ego, 4 greed.
each of sin stimulate other sins if it is desired over and above the balanced requirement.
I explain this like:
1) lust: lust is okay for the need of reproduction of generations and running the families. But here one case example:
Lion, what lion do intercourse for reproduction. but when it is sludged in the lust, it kills its own cub and eat them to fulfill desire with its lioness. Is it worth praise? Not at all. so this nature shall be changed. This lead to other sins too such as anger, envy, etc etc.
2) Gluttony: need of feeding be fulfilled by right measures is okay. but excessive is the sin. case example:
In most corrupt countries the corruption is the case example of the gluttony. 1000s of 1000000s of 1000000s of bucks fed by this gluttony eating the economy of the nation and forcing peepal stay always in vicious circle of poverty or stay backword by this corruption by others, keep backword from others of the world. Is not this is the case example of gluttony?
3 Greed: greed is outcome of the gluttony. the deceivers of the nation is the best example of the greed. they for cover of few currency gives the top secrets of their nations to other spies. is this good act? How the atomic fusion technology transferred from source to Pakistan.
4 Sloth: The Roman Empire vanished forever due to sloath nature of later imperials. Did not they careless of their empire.
5) Wrath: Yogoslavia was divided into three nations due to wrath and fight between their religious communities. Is this stupid act is worth to destroy the self weaken.
6) Envy: the clear cut case example is Egypt, when the Israel was formed by the measures of UNO and USA, still Egypt wished to conquer Israel with the help of Syria and they lost teh battle.
7) Pride: Pride turns to the ego when comes to the bad attitude of the persons. This lead to a big defeat. Case example is Saddam Husain.
I think sin is anything to do with something that makes one turn away from god in the christian theologial concept
To expand on my original definition, and only according to the christian holy book. Note not christian before someone jumps down my throat. Sin is anything against god's will. Of course god has committed most of the sins in the world but they aren't sin to him because its his will. Hence disobedience.
Ahhh sin.
May it be a myth - TOO biblical - or just a state of mind.
Everyone has a choice to commit it or not.
/atleastthat'swhatIthink
This is such a funny subject for me.
NOTE : I believe in God, or at the very least a higher power, but I DO NOT believe in religion.
As for arguments against religion...I've heard many, but only those that speak to me have stayed with me.
Now...sin...sinning...being a sinner.
I agree with the author/creator of this post. We all "sin" according to "Judeo-Christian beliefs". It's when these things are done in excess that they become sin.
Elucidate? Simpler words if you will. Check out Job for one, that book will show you that Christians are fools to blame Satan since according to that book of their bible everything Satan does god gives the ok for or commands. Deuteronomy chapter 4 is another good one. This is where god commands the Israelites to wipe out the inhabitants of the land they want to settle and slaughters men women and children. Also before you say well god didn't do the slaughtering well neither did Hitler but he ordered it. Also god lusts for souls we must either be enslaved to his will or burn eternally. If you want to find more I encourage you to read the old testament first. Also Sodom and Gomorrah for mass murder, where he also turned Lot's wife into a pillar of salt for daring to look back at her home which was on fire. Take everything with a grain of salt however considering this is only one holy book out of several that cannot be proven as being the correct one.
My Opinion...
As I said, Angils and Satans are features of the God. He have the best of each features and treats the Creation very wisely and yet not involved in the sins prevailing in the Universe. But He just the Universe by nature of the beings.
1) G- Generator
2) O- Operator
3) D- Destroyer.
Yet He protect and uplift the person with Goodness very carefully.
I found in researching the "Fall of the Angels" and the telling Book of Enoch...sin is nothing more than a poor attempt to define actions and motivations otherwise not defined within the parameters of what "man" thinks of as Holy and Sacred.
To be Immortal ....is to partake of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil...thus Adam and Eve were put out of the Garden lest their eyes be opened...o.O
What more can be known or gleaned upon that which is good or evil..on is bad the other not and thus we pull our own terminology from a concept that is beyond understanding, even our singular concept of God, the Creator falls horribly short...how then can we perceive sin as being evil? What if sin, however it is deemed or defined was neither good nor evil, but both? Thus the knowledge of knowing that might lend our thoughts to such abhorrent ideals as to think that God/The Creator of all things was both Good and Evil...would it not?
I agree with Tarquin~
It's what you make of it - though it's true, Sin is the undesirable traits of humanity. It's seen an the atrocities of man, and something that will happen, generally with no regard of the sin, as in Lust. When you lust, you
are not going to think "Oh crap, I'm sinning." It's a guilt thing to make people do it less, really. Or so I think.
It's a set of... guidelines if you will, that try steer humanity in such a direction that we'll all be healthy happy peoples that have honour and moral codes and standings. Which may have worked 400 years ago, but not exactly now. Sure, you shouldn't covet your neighbours wife or anything, but you can't lust after her? Eh? Daydreaming is a sin? (And no, I DON'T lust after anyone's wife, it's an example.) So if dreaming and thinking is a sin, then so is all else.
Sin, seems to me, a way to scare people into being good. If you covet your neighbours wife, there'll be strife. So it keeps the playing field clean to tell people they'll go to Hell for it, and suffer eternal torment, ect.
Just my opinion.
It's just like... if God were the creator, he wouldn't have made us able to "sin" per say. Being the perfect, loved species we are, it'd make no sense if we were so flawed with sins that we were cast into eternal torment.
Ah Lullaby but you'll notice that some of the religions were made to scare people.
If you take a look at the Roman/Greek Gods and Goddesses, you can see that they were human like. The rules that some people force on others have meaning and moral value but it's not bad all the time to have a little sin. After all, no one is a God, or flawless, we are all human.
Then again, some people forget that humans are still animals. Eventhough we take up most of the Earth.
What constitutes as , "sin" in my mind has an individualistic blank canvas to be written or painted as the author see's fit . Anything else is mans pathetic attempt to make himself worthy of death.
some things or actions I should say are consider sin by some and not by others, but some are worldwide and comonly unaccptable, incest, rape, murder for exemple.
those are not based on religious beleif but more on some internal programing to what is a sin and what is not
still even in those area some will consider incest what others will see as simply a different view of love, murder as a different view of justice-cleansing etch.
sin for me is nothing but a stupid belief. But also saying this i carry all 7 sins in me. I live my life normal by causing these day by day bit not much of a lust though :P
Gluttony, I love eating so much , sloth hell I am lazy ass indeed. all i do is work work work but house chores? NO WAY!!!!!!! I sleep sleep and sleep in my days off :P
wraith? I am full of it. and pride is 70% envy? i do have that too i am not perfect and at times i do envy people and hate? I hated so much of life and humans like me that cant even count. vanity? well I do have that but 10%
but even so these are sins, we cant really live without them, we are humans and also we are not monks. we are bound to suffer, if we commit them? so what? we are all doomed if we commit one of them or 7 of them? then I am ready to go to hell cause for me no one is perfect and we all commit these things and we find them normal thing to do everyday life. Pride is part of our personality and wraith, envy and hate are our emotions.
