Like my namesake, I am drawn to the dark and abandoned places. Taking my camera with me, I capture images that speak to me.

From the forgotten homes. Left to rot, and end up as a pile of rotten wood and brick. I wonder of the past Christmas mornings, the birthdays as candle blown out. Or was it a sad home, hiding secrets and terrors of life. These walls held families, and to see it being left to rot, makes me wonder where the family is now.

Asylums and Hospitals are my favorite to take photographs of. Asylums: Walking these halls, you can almost feel the pain. Locked up mental ill, mixed in with criminals. Women imprisoned as the husband put them away, maybe just to be rid of her. Abuse at the hand of the staff. Hospitals- illness, suffering, deaths. But on the opposite side- recovery, hope, new life coming into the world. Such a mix bag of feelings walking these buildings.

I have been to some very unique places. Power plants, coal mines, restaurants, bars, churches long closed to name a few. The one that stands out is a hydro electrical dam. It became flooded as leaks took over from shabby construction. The huge generators and turbines were left for the water to claim. Human tried to control water, the water reclaimed what was. The three story generators went to a watery grave.

Prisons and jails. These places have such a dark history. Energy like no other places I have ever walked. Well, maybe a graveyard.

I had to share this movie theater. Sitting in the chair as the big screen shows you an imaginary world. You cried, you laughed, you cheered on the good guy. Or maybe the bad, no judgements. You followed the story, lost for a few hours from your own problems. It gave so much to you but sits in ruin. Forgotten in today’s world of streaming.

I have been in morgues, old funeral homes, operating rooms. And I have run into coffins in some strange places. And no, I did not open them. I do not disturb, leaving only footprints in the dust.

Schools are built with such hope for the children, of a bright future. Today it can turn into a killing field within seconds. Calling on my own years it was also very judgmental. Learn of clinches, how certain kind of people stick together. Bullied. Best times of your life, they say. I disagree. But came out with some lifelong friendships. This school was built in a coal mine town. Once the mine closed it was left, to rot away like the town it stood in as jobs disappeared.

Shadows. I love seeing the difference of light and the darkness. I say you have to have the dark to appreciate the light. I know in my images I am drawn toward the darker. Insight to me? Who knows. I always take in the sunlight with a deep breath once I leave these buildings.

Seeing the beauty in decay. Life is decay as you start dying the second you are born. But don’t be afraid of it. Going forward into the unknown, see the beauty of what is around you.
