If you ‘feel’ the Moon?
How is it, for You, whether it’s a ‘good’ Full Moon, or a ‘bad’ Full moon?
Hey Ang,here is an experiment you can try....
Get about 100 people or more who claim this ability. Tell them they have to put one hundred dollars in a bowl . At a predetermined time they will be taken out into the darkness to wait until the moon rises.
If they give the exact time when the moon has risen over the horizon they will get their money back. If not, you keep the money. Make sure to do it on a night when the moon comes up around five in the morning. Make sure they don't know what time it is.
It would be interesting how many people would take the test.
**Laughs**
fascitious sod.
I was talking 'feeling', not empirical evidence.
**Laughs further**
I do make that claim. "Ouch."
I do like the full moon, as it is a nice time to do any rituals, don't have any special feeling around the time of the full moon, but have noticed over time, that my dog does react on it. Usually he will become more difficult then on other days, and we can't say that he is influenced by others.
As a Witch, a lot of my life revolves around the Moon.
Do I feel it? In the sense of I get some magical sensation? Nope, cant say I do.
*nods* i have different feelings during the moon cycles especially the full moon. I feel i have alot more energy,my spirits and awareness is raised.
It has intensified over the years by i am very aware of when there will be a full moon and no moon without checking.
I too can feel a change in my energy when the moon is full. I don't always sense if its going to be a good or a bad moon though.
Aww ang,now you know Im bein serious.I think it would be a good experiment.
But on the other note,I think people feel the Moon in some senses. Now whether it is that good feeling that being out under a full moon does to us,or an affect of gravitational pull,I dont know.
But yeah,I think we do "feel" it in one way or another.
Actually it does sound like an excellent experiment, however you should really try to include a 10% "founders fee" for coming up with the experiment. Never know how much money will be left in the bowl.
Gosh let me tell you every full moon my emotions get very tense and edgy. It's like I can feel every vibration.
10% of the pot eh? LOL I'll go for that.
The Moon makes you edgy Moonlight? Care to take that test?
and, I 'fee' energy spikes with different Full Moons, hence the thread.
Yeah that's an interesting thing, and as well as the moon there are also other forms of universal weather, alignments, sun flares and invisible stuff ...
Has led me to not immediately presume that there is something "wrong" with me if I feel strange but at least to stop and wonder if there is a universal weather situation at hand. Causes one to respond quite differently and take different actions too.
Plus, whatever the universal weather, there are usually activities that are perfect for that kind of time, that kind of state and if one matches them up, good results can be had whatever the weather.
I agree with you on that one Starfield.
Sunspots,Perigees and all that cosmic stuff.Actually,I believe the March Perigee , the moon was the closest it has been in about 18 years.
Or something like that.
Bad moon rising?
well, the police do put more staff on the nights of a full moon. well, many police, in several countries...
Slightly related: One time about 2 weeks before a full Moon I got a text message that read similar to "After the next full Moon, unstoppable events will incur."
I don't have the text message any more to copy the exact words but the person who sent it had no knowledge of typing it and to this day I still don't know what it means. Makes me think Moon cycles have a lot to do with society happenings though.
In relation to your question, yes I do feel more or less powerful at different times of the month and then realize what phase the Moon was in later on.
A full moon makes me feel, as though I'm swimming through an open ocean. As the waves begin to grow stronger and taller, I sink beneath the surface of the watery beast. The moon makes me feel safe and secure even though I'm in deep, with the powerful forces above pulling me down.
suffice to say, it makes you 'feel', which was the purpose of this thread. to talking of the feelings assocuiated with the Full Moon.
Do I feel the moon? Yes - I do...approxiamately every 28 days.
Do I feel the moon no do I feel the effect of the moon possibly. Is it cookie cutter identical every time no it can range anywhere from 1 day to 5ish always around the time of the full moon. Think of it like your body decides to party but you didn't get the memo, a good amount of internal pain, some other stuff. Its a blast let me tell you one fantastic time oh yeah!
'kay... the world is mostly water, the tides of which are affected by The Full Moon. WE are mostly water... an someone is gonna tell me that The Full Moon has NO affect on us??
It has no effect on us , kidding. Couldn't resist back to serious mode gravitational pull would make the most amount of sense.
I think that it's more of what you feel after you've seen the moon. Sometimes there's a psychological reaction to it.
Some people are influenced by the sight of it and some are influenced by its pull.
Since the moon's gravity affects water and the human (or whatever you may be) body contains 75% (or around there) water it could also explain some peoples' "feelings" or the "vibration".
Plus that's also where the term "Lunatic" comes from since many people in the past were greatly affected by the full moon.
Also the crime rate everywhere rises during this time. Usually.
Whether it's overcast or clear...the full moon draws me. I am usually drawn to Salem, MA. I feel most complete there and try to go often. The energy mixed with the energy of the full moon is something that I can't even describe. If I am unable to go I am usually "tightly wound" and anxious. I am usually unable to fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning; and only after I have at least stepped outside to stand in the moons energy. Best way I can describe it...it's like a drug.
am Now curious: there is a propensity with the respondants to this thread to be female.
I do find that interesting...
**chuckles**
that I'm not denying. same as earlier, I attested my acknowledgement I too 'feel' it.
I just wonder why the propensity toward women over men???
Women, like the moon, go through cycles that change our bodies. So the influence of the moon and it's cycles are more likely to have a stronger effect on us.
you can actually draw energy from the moon and feel it
its like an electric charge that will run through your body
you just gotta meditate and recite a lil prayer
msg me if you want to have the prayer
Well, I have an inkling lots of folks will be feeling the effects of this Moon as it raises the bar along the coast.
Of course, one can only speculate whether the earthquake, the storm and the Moon were all just a coincidence ; )
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2030278/New-moon-warm-Atlantic-water-make-Hurricane-Irene-flooding-worse.html
Ooops, forgot the good bit...this video is about to go viral, watch the hits increase exponentially.
(How the bad Moon pulls the sea)
Taralone, thanks...
and as for the rest... thank yopu for the researched imput, it kina illustrates what I intimated what I was saying about the moons gravitional pull...
appreciated...
In fact, there have been a ton of studies over the years, all looking for any statistical connection between the moon ...especially the full moon, and its affects on human biology or behavior.
Most of the sound studies find no connection. Some have proved inconclusive, and many have purported to reveal connections, but they have actually turned out to involve flawed methods or have never been reproduced...
Reliable studies comparing the lunar phases to births, heart attacks, deaths, suicides, violence, psychiatric hospital admissions and epileptic seizures, among other things, have over and over again .....found little or no connection.
Yes,The human body is about 73 % water, and so people often suggest, such as in this thread, that tides might be at work inside us.
Its important to know that it isnt only the moon that affects gravity but moon and the sun together.Combined, the gravitational effect is so strong that our planet's crust is literally stretched daily by tidal effects.
Let me explain a little about how it works..The ocean on the side of earth facing the moon gets pulled toward the moon more than does the center of the planet.
This creates a high tide. On the opposite side of the earth, another high tide is occuring, because the center of the earth is being pulled toward the moon more than is the ocean on the far side. The result essentially creates a negative force that actually lifts the ocean away from the planet.
However, there is no measurable difference in the moon's gravitational effect to one side of your body vs. the other.
Even in the Great Lakes, tides never exceed 2 or 2 1/2 inches. And thats according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Its important to note that the effect of gravity diminishes with distance, but never goes away. So with that in mind, everything in the universe is tugging on everything else.
Researchers have even calculated that a mother holding her baby exerts 12 million times the tidal force on the child than the moon does, simply by being close.
Last but not least,I find it really interesting that the highest tides occur not just at full moons but also at new moon, when the moon is between Earth and the sun Our planet feels the combined gravitational affects, yet nobody ever claims any funny stuff related to the new moon .
Here is stuff on moon myths according to Straightdope.com.....
Consider also that tides in Earth's oceans happen twice every day as Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours, bringing the moon constantly up and down in the sky. If the moon's tugging affected the human body, one might presume we'd be off balance at least twice a day (and maybe we are).
Studies of full moon effects
Here are some of the reputable studies in peer-reviewed journals that have failed to find connections:
EPILEPSY: A study in the journal Epilepsy & Behavior in 2004 found no connection between epileptic seizures and the full moon, even though some patients believe their seizures to be trigged by the full moon. The researchers noted that epileptic seizures were once blamed on witchcraft and possession by demons, contributing to a longstanding human propensity to find mythical rather than medical explanations.
PSYCHIATRIC VISITS: A 2005 study by Mayo Clinic researchers, reported in the journal Psychiatric Services, looked at how many patients checked into a psychiatric emergency department between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. over several years. They found no statistical difference in the number of visits on the three nights surrounding full moons vs. other nights.
EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS: Researchers examined 150,999 records of emergency room visits to a suburban hospital. Their study, reported in American Journal of Emergency Medicine in 1996, found no difference at full moon vs. other nights.
SURGERY OUTCOMES: Do doctors and nurses mess up more during the full moon? Not according to a study in the October 2009 issue of the journal Anesthesiology. In fact, researchers found the risks are the same no matter what day of the week or time of the month you schedule your coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Not all studies dismiss lunar influence.
PET INJURIES: In studying 11,940 cases at the Colorado State University Veterinary Medical Center, researchers found the risk of emergency room visits to be 23 percent higher for cats and 28 percent higher for dogs on days surrounding full moons. It could be people tend to take pets out more during the full moon, raising the odds of an injury, or perhaps something else is at work — the study did not determine a cause.
MENSTRUATION: This is one of those topics on which you will find much speculation (some of it firm and convincing-sounding) and little evidence. The idea is that the moon is full every month and women menstruate monthly. Here's the thing: Women's menstrual cycles actually vary in length and timing — in some cases greatly — with the average being about every 28 days, while the lunar cycle is quite set at 29.5 days. Still, there is one study (of just 312 women), by Winnifred B. Cutler in 1980, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, that claims a connection. Cutler found 40 percent of participants had the onset of menstruation within two weeks of the full moon (which means 60 percent didn't). If anyone can tell me how this oft-cited study proves anything, I'm all ears. Also, one should be skeptical that in the intervening 29 years, nobody seems to have produced a study supporting Cutler's claim.
ANIMALS GONE WILD: A pair of conflicting studies in the British Medical Journal in 2001 leaves room for further research. In one of the studies, animal bites were found to have sent twice as many British people to the emergency room during full moons compared with other days. But in the other study, in Australia, dogs were found to bite people with similar frequency on any night.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION: In the Journal of Affective Disorders in 1999, researchers suggested that before modern lighting, "the moon was a significant source of nocturnal illumination that affected [the] sleep–wake cycle, tending to cause sleep deprivation around the time of full moon." They speculated that "this partial sleep deprivation would have been sufficient to induce mania/hypomania in susceptible bipolar patients and seizures in patients with seizure disorders." Best I can discern, however, these oft-cited suggestions have never been tested or verified with any numbers or rigorous study of any kind.
Myths persist
If one presumes that modern lighting and mini-blinds have pretty much eliminated the one plausible source of human-related moon madness, why do so many myths persist?
Several researchers point out one likely answer: When strange things happen at full moon, people notice the "coincidental" big bright orb in the sky and wonder. When strange things happen during the rest of the month, well, they're just considered strange, and people don't tie them to celestial events.
"If police and doctors are expecting that full moon nights will be more hectic, they may interpret an ordinary night's traumas and crises as more extreme than usual," explains our Bad Science Columnist Benjamin Radford. "Our expectations influence our perceptions, and we look for evidence that confirms our beliefs."
Great post Oceanne. I found this:
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/moon.html
(and it supports what you've just said. There are a good few research articles to trawl through first)
As you'll see if you read through:
"Perhaps one of the first things that you notice about these studies is that the results are inconsistent. Some studies show that a particular behavior will occur more often during the full moon and other studies show no relationship between behavior and the full moon. This finding alone casts doubt on the theory that the full moon influences behavior. It may also be that experiments have been designed differently. For example, some studies include "full moon" behaviors that occur a few days before and after the full moon, while other studies include only those behaviors within a single day of the full moon.
Because many people believe that the full moon can affect behavior, experiments must be designed carefully to eliminate the possibility that people's beliefs will influence the data. For example, if people know that they are in an experiment which studies how the moon affects behavior, they may act in ways that change the results. It is possible that people have a "selective memory" for strange events that happen on the full moon; they remember strange incidents that occur during a full moon, but forget when these same things happen at other times.
It is also important to remember that studies that examine relationships between behavior and the phase of the moon determine only correlations. These types of studies determine if one set of numbers varies in a reliable manner with another set of numbers. If they do, then it can be said that a relationship exists.
Although most experiments fail to show a relationship between the phase of the moon and abnormal behavior, the belief in the "lunar effect" is still strong among many people. Unfortunately, the occasional newspaper story that describes strange behaviors during a full moon only reinforces this myth".
when occeanne first spoke with facts... I said.. I was talking feeling... not empirical evidennce.
feeling, emotion, faith ... belief.
none of these are quantative.
yet, the contributions were appreciated.
I think many peeps feel the moon in the context you speak of Ang.It has an ambiance that is all its own .And in that respect, yes,I feel the moon.
As an astrologer the Moon is the more subtle effect while the Sun and Ascendant signs are more assertive
Thank you PAGAN.
I think I might add that it is evident that the moon has profound affects on our emotions. Not only is it awe inspiring,it is a comfort to us in some way.
I think we need to remember that there are at least six aspects to your astrological profile, along with the Moon. You have to include them all
I 'feel' the moon. The moon to be is like the sun to beach people and summer folks. It gives me energy, it makes me happy, I enjoy the outdoors at night. I am just the opposite with the sun. It brings me down, I prefer not to be in it whenever possible.
It's also been noted that
More people are romantric during a full moon
More murders are done in the full Moon cycle
Rather strange
emotion, thankfully.. cannot be measured.
it's why I said this was about 'feeling'.
Heck, if'n I wanted to test something... I wouldn't revcel in it, in quite the same way...
So, I'll continue to enjoy.. it's wax and wane.
Mel,above I mentioned this persistent belief that crime rate and murder rates go up during a full moon has no basis in fact. They have done a LOT of studies on it and shown that it simply isnt true.
All depends.. I feel the moon in a way that reacts around my energies, but its different for everyone, I guess..
Well Oceanne that makes for the crime rate then. *S* Thanks. in Paganism a Full or waxing Moon provides energy while a waning moon brings peaceful more subtle energies.
Lol yes, mel.
However,I do know one thing that happens to the moon when its full.It crosses into Earth's Magnetotail, which is an extension of our magnetic field. You can tell when the Moon is inside the magnetotail...If the Moon is full, it is inside the magnetotail. It enters the magnetotail three days before it is full and takes about six days to cross and exit on the other side.
During a crossing, the Moon comes in contact with a gigantic plasma sheet of charged particles trapped in the Mtail. These particles charge the moon a negative charge.
On the dayside this effect is counteracted to a degree by sunlight, which knock the charged particles off the surface. But on the nightside, electrons accumulate and voltages can climb to hundreds or thousands of volts.
So maybe what we might be "feeling" has something to do with that,Im not sure.
I have acually found myself more attrackted to the Dark moon than the full moon. especially when it's a blue moon. Damn! My body goes crazy!
Actually astrologically, it's been reported that the Blue Moon has a very strange erotic effect on people. That's very interesting, yes?
Very interesting indeed! ^_^ The bluemoon is a very mysterious thing. As is the moon in general
This website has an excellent article on romance and Moon phases:
http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/www/etm/etm_chap5.html
Occeanne... you say, as if with definitive prove that the Full Moon has no effect on the crime rate.
See...
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/moon.html
Thisa illustrates, that while correct, there are effects recorded, in other area's.
*
Also... I have read that in Manchester UK, there is an expectancy amongst many, that there will be an increase. This perception alone... has an affect.
True Ang,but by ratio,it doesnt really hold up.Good link though, thanks.
Now,I have heard some controversial things about the whole supermoon deal..
So have I, Oceanne but have not seen anything to really substantiate the hypothesis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermoon !!!
Mel... sometimes that Lady gets me looking at general weirdness. But, that was... interesting.
Ta Occeanne.
Hahah Ang! Gotta keep it weird.:)
There was a bunch of hype about the supermoon. They were saying that it was the cause of the Tsunami, but now say that it wasnt..
I never get bored, starring at the full moon, and I want to go out more on that day. A friend of mine works at a mental hospital and he says, the patients are more challenging on that night, hence the word lunatic.
I know what you mean DNG,I always love to sit out under the full moon or here where we are. Many times,we have a huge moon rising and that always seems to put an emtion into the night.
Awe inspiring really.
The Moon ro me as a pagan always had some mystical aspects to it. There fore full Moon rituals are somewhat special
**kicks self**
damnation, I kinda like forgot that to many here, it still has a religious connotation... how remiss of me.
not religious but a deeply spiritual experience that brings joy to heart and soul. there's a difference *S*
This site is something I've used as a reference on Moon effects and positive emotions.
http://www.pureloveenergy.org/t21487041/how-does-the-full-moon-effect-our-emotions-sleep-and-dreams/
Has anyone ever seen the Aurora Borealis?
I got to see it in action when I was in Anchorage a long time ago.
The emotions I felt when I watched it shimmer across the sky was much like what I feel when I see a big, full moon.
I live my life by the phases of the moon, but I do not know anyone who claims to be able to actually feel it when it rises or sets.
Maybe this is when all the crazy people come out to make menaces of themselves and cause mischief and we turn and say "Must be a full moon?"
You know Ang,in light of your original context, Sattva,Raja and Tama come to mind.
In light of this do your emotions make you feel more grounded to the earth or more ethereal?
I would have to say both.Sometimes it is one, sometimes it is the other. How about you?
One thing that is constant however,is the awe I always feel.I get the same type of feeling watching meteor showers.
forgive me.. when I wrote religious I had in context., of faith.
should have phrased that diffeently.
'not know someone who can feel it rise and set'.. shee-it, enter the mind of a manic depressive...
Oceanne I like that answer. I think it's also a matter of opening yourself up to the Moon influence and concentrate on what aspects a particular full Moon has according to the calendar.
again lass... I emphasise, am not seling empirical evidence, just testimony of 'feeling.'
I don't really feel anything from a full moon the only thing that hits me is its beauty.
That is exactly what I have addressed in my last three posts Ang .How the moon makes me feel.
Awe inspired.
And what it brought to mind.
I dont get Bad feelings from the moon.
Except for one time in my entire life.
The moon is an amazing being. She inluenceso much in the world & yet doesn'tgt allthe respct she deserves.
Sometimes when I'm sitting outside, it feels like she's hugging me tightly I feel completely at ease.
.. am curious 'bout the one time Occeanne, perhaps you PM me 'bout that [[or not]] an my apologies, guess the addresses and such was just a switch off, when it came to what I saw an emotional response being sought.
.. **Bows**
No problem Ang.I understand.:)
And I dont mind telling you about the one time.I was in Sarasota Fla one night sitting at the ocean.the moon had just risen and it was blood red. That isnt uncommon, but it stayed red until it was very high in the sky.Whic, isnt unheard of either..But
I couldnt help feeling that night,as I looked up at it that the world had changed forever. As of that moment..
..ah. Thank you.
My comparison, if many years ago, when I wished for something ... gottit, regretted it and, began a ten-year cycle. That all started with a full moon.
May I ask how that happened and what you did to stop the cycle?
one might say some were self-fulfillings prophecies involved; a lot of learning... and, to be succinct, ten years is up, soon.
I 'feel' the moon by my feeling something in the air and which season it really is, for me, the fall and winter are the strongest pull I feel.
ah Now... Seasons, another post indeed.
Mine would be Fall as well. My Birth-time.
Many religions have used the moon cycles to explain things, when to plants and reap and examine tidals changes knowing when to or not fish
I never fish during a full moon...although its great outside, the fishing normally sucks during a full moon.
Well the fish don't like the light though. *LOL* But women also tracked their menstrual cycles by the Moon as well. In the witches Almanac you'll discover many aspects of the Moon and even recipes for each Moon.
Thats right Mel,they dont.
And look above,I have a link or two to studies done on the mensus and moon ...No relation.
no relation... ? yet, others before you said they thought there was... that one does require further reading, for this guy to understand that...
The studies are saying different Ang,even though some stick by it.I have seen some papers which say the findings are significant, but so far the majority says not really.
It stands to reason it would affect us but..
Here you go to start..
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1348/whats-the-link-between-the-moon-and-menstruation
http://www.athenainstitute.com/sciencelinks/lunarandmenst.html
I feel every fullmoon is a good one for me! That is when i light candles and meditate. Also I do any rituals that I see fit. I don't feel that the full moon effects me in any bad ways!
appreciated Damia... Occeanne... Hells teeth, I thought this was thought-provoking... useful links, BUT... all that illustrated was that many have different experiences .. from... others I saw from thereon.
Exactly my point. We all are all on different cycles, and they dont always correspond with the lunar cycles. ;)
I personally do not. However I have a friend who does, and she hates the full moon
What are her reasons for hating the Full Moon? Normally it's a time of empowerment.
now there's an answer I hope to read an all.
for me... it is empowering. But, I wanted to know how others 'feel' it... to read that someone "hates" the Full Moon leaves me full of intrigue.
I asked how people felt about The Full Moon and, it's effects. Heck, that made little sense to me, in context: but then, if we could read between words to see clearly anothers meaning, I wouldn't be so specific in my questions... yep, call me confused by that one...
You might want to get used to the idea that the moon was once a part of the earth Contessa. We are finding more and more evidence that this in fact, might have very well been the case.
I remember in the 80s that one of my dads partners wrote a book about it and everyone else pretty much blew him off.
Seems he could be right after all.
http://www.weeklyscientist.com/ws/articles/moonblast.htm
In sticking to the topic ,I focused on that statement because Im wondering..if the moon did break off of the earth,it might explain in part why we have such an affinity for her.
