Okay here it goes. I went to the store the other day to get a new cd. I get home pop it in my computer think I can surf the net and here some music. Guess what no can do, they put a protection they computer will not be able to play them. Thats really nice to know since I still have a tape deck in my car and dont have a cd player just whats in my computer. I can understand that the record industry whats to keep you from making any copys. I remember when you could make a copy if you pais for a store copy. This is what piss me off, if they are going to keep the cd's from playing in your computer they should have it noted on the cd!!! What does eveyone else think about this?????
UGH! this is one of those topics that always get me into a rage! Those dam people that decide they want to stop music sharing! I think its a crock of shit.
I am sure by them thinking that copyrighting a cd it will make it some some kid cant upload it onto one of the file sharing networks. You know some person is going to hack that and be able to get through it and upload it anyway.
The one thing I hate is I like 1 or maybe 2 songs from a CD. I dont want to go buy the whole cd if its going to suck. Not only that but most of the time they are so friggin expensive. and if they arent expensive it seems like they are the parental version.
I also like being able to put whatever song I want on a cd. That way I am paying attention to my driving and not trying to kill someone as I look at a book with a billion cds in it to find the one I want.
::: shakes head::::
I am sure there have to be reasons for it.. but its sucks!
i agree. i become enraged at this subject. what is the difference, between me taping Buffy or Breakfast Club off of tv, or downloading it? i pay my dsl bill, as i pay my cable bill. im not making any money off of it, but watching it at home. besides, remember when people would have VHS tapes of movies, they would sell? nobody stopped that shit. ugh.....and does Jennifer Lopez really need another set of mink eyelashes?! does Puffy need more diamond shoes? i dont see any of them suffering. how about metallica? they started this shit. same with the movie "stars", believing their own hype, thinking they are better than everyone else, therefore, more knowing in the world of politics, and deserving of much more than the rest of us. ok, i will regain my composure now.....*smile* im ready for my close-up. ♥ ♀
ps..oh yea, and that non-computer play, is bullshit. wtf?
I agree that they should put that notice on the cd. So you know what you're buying. I think pretty much the bottom line is that people are going to make copies of cds. on the computer is where I most listen to music so yeah that would suck for me. I'm sorry they make you go through that. If you need a shoulder to cry on I'm here heheh.
bleh, poopy people...
puts on my help desk hat
if anyone else is really concerned about this "feature" ::winks:: update your CD burner BIOS from the manufacturers website, theyre onto this too, because they want you to buy their burners to blag this sort of CD.
have fun!
I think you shouldn't be able to listen to it on your computer ONLY if your player is a writer.
I was on my way to bed but checked my email and recieved an alert from Yahoo, which I subscribe to titled "Downloading: The Next Generation" --- while this doesn't exaclty talk about CD Copyright protection, it does give the reader an idea as to why things like this are being done ... here's the link if anyone cares to read it
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/washpost/20050301/tc_washpost/a59632_2005feb28
Well I have a writer in my system and the cds still dont show up im my computer. Also they dont shpw up in friends computers that dont have a writer in them. Who do they think they are? They dont want you to make a copy of the cd, well if my cd I got in the store gets damage they should have it set up they will replace it for you. I will return any cd that does not play in my computer and I hope many others do to.
ohhh I love the fury and passion people!
It's called..... downloading it all illegally with crack files!!!
At teh end of the the artisit is entitled to thier money. And really it is fair.
But the prices for CD is way to high agreed.
But like any good thief... if they want something bad enough, they will find a way to crack even this... give it time...
CDs like this are suppose to be marked when you buy them (as not compatible with a computer CD-Rom). Don't buy them.
These came out several years ago and were big loosers. Kids wouldn't buy them. I didn't know any were still on the market.
There are many ways to defeat the protection. If it's just 1 or 2 songs (or even the whole CD), plug a CD player into your sound card's line in, and then record the song(s) in real-time... (make wav files) Then convert them to mp3's.
Takes more work (and a tad of technical skill), but it will work.
I didn't think CR-Rom BIOS upgrades to defeat this protection would be available... As it would be a violation of the DMCA (You cannot legally defeat any encryption scheme).
Making copies of CDs/DVDs/Tapes/Etc is legal if it is for your own use, not for distribution, and you own the original. This is a 1970s-era ruling (the RIA wanted to ban blank cassette tapes back in the day). They got around this by pushing through the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) in 1999 (I think) which made breaking any form of encryption illegal.
So in a nutshell, you can legally copy that CD, but you can't break the encryption to copy it.
I love that you're so logical.. I was going to bet good money you where typing as I posted :P
I understand why they are doing it, but URGH! The irritation of it all. Weren't we all taught to share when we where children?
i think most companies only seem to be bothered if the production of copies occurs in bulk. but there will always be piracy. especially on a resource like the internet.
Personally, i don't have a lot of money, so downloading is wonderful i can basically get any music i like. However, i know when i'm older i'll buy all the REAL CD's later. but of course i won't play them, i wouldn't want to scratch them
Dont get me wrong I have in the past downloaded songs from the internet and I know it was wrong but it was only a few to see if I would like the cd. I also as you said Cancer, I did not know that this type of protection was still on cds. I even found it on a new cd that was put out two years ago. I never seen it before that the computer does not see anything in the drive like this. I also read about a month ago that there are going to be a new type of copyright protection on movies and you will not be able to watch thim in you system if you have a dvd player. This new copyright protection on movies will make your system lock up. Also as you said Cancer about making back-up copys try to do it on the new Faith Hill cd sounds like you have it buned but when you get over 23sec. the music ends.
oooooohh this makes me so mad when they do that! like i have music match so i can download songs for a dollor each so i dont have to buy the whole fricken cd and it puts so much adware spyware and crap on my computer its not even worth it! so then i go to the troble to buy a really good cd and they put a no burn mojo on it so i cant make a copy to listen to in the car so the origional doesnt get scratched and then my cd's get jacked because i live in a crappy part of town. now i completly get the idea of doing this because i think the bands should get the full money that they deserve its just a pain in the ass!
yeah that is a tad bit annoying try useing a program called Limewire i use it to download music and other stuff 0=)
one method of protection involves installers that autorun when your CD is inserted - any half decent CD recording program would allow you to choose which session (data or audio) to allow the OS to read - blagging a CD over a line level connection is fine if you want to spend the time - but the quick way (the intention of the original message) is to do it in one step with your burner - so research with google into what upgrades are available for your model burner
DMCA (and macrovision, DVD region coding etc) is defunct when chinese manufacturers don't respect it - therefore buy chinese made consumer electronics!
I think its classic hypocrisy when for example, sony entertainment protect their audio CD or DVD, and sony electronics manufacture a CD or DVD recorder to rip it off!
I have approximately 500 cds that I have bought, over the last 10 years. On each of them, I would estimate that there are 1 or 2 songs worthy of recording. I find it insulting to pay $20 (raping our wallets) for it. Course, that is their perogative to charge, and my perogative to not buy. I've supported them for a long time. Before CDS it was cassettes, 45s and 8-tracks, vinyl....reel to reel? I also go and buy the artists that I really admire. The ones that have a whole cd's worth of good songs. That is rare to find. But, if the recording industry would charge the .50 cents it took to make it, in Mexico, by shoeless kids, sure, I would buy it, no problem. *snickering* Ok, mark it up alittle, for shipping and handling, to $1.50.
I got a check a few years ago, from the recording industry, for a whopping $3.00!! Apparently, they were found in court, for overcharging (gasp!!) their customers and was sending out checks. Reminds me of The Jerk. "One dollar and 69 cents!!". *laughing* "I don't need nothing but this ashtray".
I dont even know how much I have spent over the years for cd's,tapes ect. I do know if they want to really start playing the games they are I will start to get my music from www.mp3search.ru $.10 a song sure sounds good to me!
I get this lovely pop up from AOL saying USe this free trail of some mp3 download B.S. then when thats done the songs are .99 cents a song!!!!.. wtf is up with that... I can go buy a friggin cd on sale for 12.99! I know that the recorders and all the other people deserve a profit for what they do but come on, dosent it get outta hand when MTV ( yah yah I know *gasp*) comes on and the singer had 12 cars and 3 houses?!?!?!?
Actually, no far from it. I enjoy the fact that I can go to normal places, be in public and not have people sworm over me to take pictures of me and act like asses. I also like the fact that I can wake up and not be a superficial bitch and decide what car to drive because it matches my outfit. Different things mean things to different people.
That is crazy. You should be able to listen to your cds on your computer. You pay so much for them anyway that you should be able to play them in anything that plays cds. And they should definately warn you on the cd that it won't let you play it on your computer so at least you know what your getting into.
Oh my god yes cds are way too expensive. that's a joke of mine, "Artists are better when they're starving"
it should have said somewhere on the case that it was not compatible with a computer cd rom drive.
i have had some the same mind u that did not state it also, but looking back the cd was not very good, still makes me mad though
Well Cancer, I guess you had more problems then me on this issue. I think this is getting out of hand and we the people need to put a stop to it. I know myself I am not getting any music cds that I cant play in my computer or make a copy. Also for them to put a sofware on your computer with out you know is the real bad part about this. I can see you really have done some of your home work on this. I will have to check to see if I have that file on my hard drive. Well good luck to you and if you get any other info please post it!!
that does suck cause sometimes i just want to make a cd with all the songs that i like on them beats caring around alot of cds everywhere nowdays they will copyright anytihing
I have noted before about a site that you can down load songs for $.10 Someone I work with has done it and the songs turned out great. The site is www.mp3search.ru This beats paying $1.00 song. I think this is a place I will start getting my songs I just dont get the art work. You are even able to go to this site and hear the songs in full. Well good luck to all.
there's one other thing that's not been mentioned yet.. these companies had also previously set up cds with copywrite in such a way that one of the songs is unplayable (on any device)..and in some cases the entire cd had failed to work.. I don't know if that's still the case or not
but, it's reasons like all those noted above and these that will only see piracy grow
also a clareifaction on piracy, technically piracy is if you make a profit from it
as to haveing hidden software installed on your pc (without your knowledge)..dose this not now break many of the new 'anti spyware/adware/stealthware' laws now presant in many countries, sue the bastards for malicious intent, since it's done over the net file a complaint in a country that will favour you *shrugs* if it works spread the word..
ty cancer for posting the artical
Not Compatible with Your iPod, June 10, 2004 i havent bought cds in a long time i use winmx and limewire but that spy ware stuff still finds it way in my computer i get pop up adds and i havent even been to the site and it shows up in my windows activity log....
Welcome to beautiful Serbia where sun shines and pirated CD-s grow on every tree! ;>
My salary is 150 eur. and CD with foreign (that means non-serbian, which is 98% of the music I listen) music costs 20 eur. Imagine me taking my monthly payment, going to the nearest music shop and buying huge amount of 7 CD-s! Naww, I think it's not funny at all!
It's always easier to crack then to protect!
so it's useless to protect, someone will always crack it!
This subject pisses me off! I know the feeling! Why? Its lame! Grrr! They need to get it into their head that:
1)Not everyone can afford Cd's, damn they are soo expensive.
2)Not everyone owns a Cd player. They to are pretty expensive if you want one that works.
3) How much does it cost to make a lil bit of plastic with a lil bit of music on it?
I understand everyone wants to make money, hell it makes the world go round. I just think its time that people stand up and stop buying the cds. They dont have the right to put software on my computer or block me from able to play them on my computer. For me I am done, if this is the game they want to play I will start my downloads from sites and get if free or for less then they sale it for.
thats not right. i dont want my computer infected with sh!t these idiots put to protect their stupid inventions.
i hope they get in trouble for that. i probably have that sneaky little thing installed in my computer and now im goign to go look for it and get rid of it if i can. i didnt know. thanks cancer for that post.
things like this make me mad......
dont ever mess with my computer
grrrrr
Here's a link to a very well documented look at how this new anti-copy driver works and can be removed.
http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~jhalderm/cd3/
By the way, it should be noted, that even with this technology in place, a CD can still be burned. This driver garbles your attempt to use your regular burning software, like Nero, MusicMatch, etc. Yet it can be done from Windows MediaPlayer.
The CD essentially has Digital Rights Management encrypted WMA files on the CD that it plays with WinMediaPlayer. You can play as many times as you like, and probably even copy to your hard drive or MP3/WMA player. These WMA files also usually allow burning up to 3 times to a CD.
Here's the kicker. Not only does that mean that you can make up to 3 archival backup CDs, or burn each song onto 3 mix CDs. BUT the CDs you burn DO NOT have the copy-protection software on them.
All you have to do is RIP your backup CD and voila. You will have copyable MP3 songs to do with as you please.
Hey E D or Cancer, question, either of you know, if you have one of these CD's with this on it, and you RIP it to your sytem, can you then use a converter and convert them to a different type of file???
Any audio/video file can be converted into just about any other type of audio/video file.
However, you'll loose something in the translation. It's always best to convert into the desired format the first time around.
As an example, lets way you want to convert a wmv to an mp3 file. Seach google for:
wmv2mp3
convert wmv mp3
I have just burned the Velvet Revolver Cd onto my pc a few weeks ago and i am now looking for the driver.. I don't seem to have got this hidden driver installed? Have they just limited this to the USA versions of the CD's and not the UK one? But, looking at my drivers i have a dmboot and dmload.. dunno what they are but i don't like the sound of them.. No wonder i'm always having hassle with this machine.. *growls* Thanks for the great posts and pointing me in the right direction..
Apparently the E.U. release of the Velvet Revolver album uses the Macrovision CDS-200 copy prevention technology, not the SunnComm CD3 driver we had mentioned. The Japanese release does not appear to contain any copy protection.
I want to start by saying thanks to everyone who have posted websites and all info on this problem. I have to say this has help me out alot. I will say nero has been a pain in my butt when it comes making a copy of cds.
