I know this is wierd, but did Jesus die a Virgin. I am by no means a Christian, I'm just intrested in different Religion. I was talking about this a while back with some friends. They said that they recon he wasn't, that summink wid him n Mary existed. I don't belive in him being the son of god and all but he must have been atleast a real man, why would the christian bible be made by a tale??
What do you think, Jesus - Virgin?!?
interesting topic.
From the Christian point of view... if memory serves... Jesus was never married. Since he was never married, and the bible looks down upon sex out of wedlock he very well could have been...
HOWEVER... One must remember.. Jesus was not a Christian.
Jesus was Jewish.
Dig up what the 'rules of play' are in the Jewish religion, cause I got NO CLUE.
oh yh, I forgot about that. But then, was Mary Jewish or Christian?
Jewish. "Christian" was not to come about until after his death, if I am correct.
The fact i think you are over looking is that the guy had a famous and rich dad, he could also do magic tricks and walk on water, PLUS he never ran out of wine for the ladies.....
The thing is, pretending, there is no way to definitively know, EITHER way.
It is all supposition, and both sides could be argued. It is an answerless question.
You are correct, Requiem.
Christianity did not come about untill after his death. The name of the religion is in fact the mans name: Christ.
At the time of his existance, Jewish was the major religion... Muslim... ect.
Before the death of Christ (which caused the deciples to set forth and preach the word of Christ... hence Christianity) there was no Christianity.
Did that make sense?
hmmm yh i guess but then its still kl to see what views ppl have on him
i think he was not a virgin....on the acounts of other books i have heared about....
The Bible does not give us the entire story... how could it tell us all about everyone in it..it would be huge... I believe, contray to popular opinion that christ was not an only child.. that he was married... prolly to mary magdalene...why else was she there at the cross?
for all we know the bible WAS jus a fairy tale, they say that they did see jesus walk on water i doubt it but whatever. But how should anyone know anything about jesus since his life was not writen down on a piece of paper moment by moment so no one can know that he was or wasnt a virgin..
This is a very interesting topic. If i had to make a guess i would say that Jesus wasn't a virgin. But that's if he ever really did exist.
Either way, in the story he was a good man. I for one don't really care if he was or not. but there is a lot of discussion around that whole subject mostly because of Mary magdalen and that they "supposedly" had a child. Although there is a good chunk of people who believe he was together with Mary, but they didn't have a child, even though a good number of the stories involve Mary having a young girl traveling with her when she fled the area after Jesus was killed. That is at least one of the stories. I don't know what I believe but I'm not desperate to try to find out.
It really depends on the bible you read. In the catholic bible, they omit the passages that make jesus sound more inherintly human. My girlfriend is babtist and her mother has told me that their bible is different.
no jesus wasn't dont forget about mary magdilen the woman that was always at his side and she who he frequently kissed on the lips
....this is along the lines of 'Did Adam and Eve Have Bellybuttons.'
Oddly enough, my catholic school teacher never returned that book, either-- but I returned hers.
I hope they had belly buttons... I would feel naked without one...
Oh come on If Jesus was ever real he was a man and men have needs so no he could not have been a virgin.
True Radu, although not alot of men are able to resist temptation, there are some men out there who have never been with a woman and who learn to surpress their urges ....
But this is again speculation, how are we to know for sure if he was .. this is the tale that goes around the room, what it begins as, is not usually what it ends up as. None of us were there ..
Did Buddah get laid? Did Ghandi? Did John III? Did Billy bob jurgenheimer? What do people get out of talking about this. Are we all so simple minded.
Jesus wanted Peace!! Why would you mock him the way you do. I dont start threads about other religions, why start one about mine. Im am by no means a good christian, but it bugs me that you mock a man that wanting peace upon this earth. PEACE. He is above us simple minded people. We cant even begin to imagine how this man thought and felt. I say who gives a rats a** if he got laid, he is history, and he will be around forever more.
probly not
in all religons the gods sleep with eachotha a gd exsample of this is the greek gods

"Practise what you preach."
What I mean to say if this dude preached love and stuff then well you have to have first hand experience right??
I actually would be very impressed if he wasn't I mean that means he embraced all the feelings/complexity that is humanity and he was a red blooded male and was friendly to everybody and maybe different ppl had different ways of thanking him, I mean obviously he may have not taken their gratitude in that way but life finds a wawy right?? So although I don't believe in him I hope he did either find Love in that way and he did get some I mean his daddy did create women seem's pointless not to appreciate his father's finer work :)
MrLarven,
It's popular these days to bash Christianity. You're seeing within this thread just how easily people go along with the norm.
It's the old, Do you beat your wife? question.
There is a theory going around in the religios community that at the time of Jesus' crusifixitoin.....Mary Magdelan was pregnant with Jesus' child, hence her disappearence from the bible. She fled to escape the people who wanted Jesus and any of his heirs dead. It is also believed that Jesus and Mary were married in a secret ceremony.
If it is true.....who knows?
I thought the question was, "When did you stop beating your wife?"
At any rate.
It does irk me to see people throw out simple, non-sequitur type statements to bash a subject they either know nothing about or disdain. That tendency, along with the lack of backing argument or information, AND the inability to formulate a complete sentance (sentence? I always mix the two words) merely cuase me to snort in derision myself at them and gloss over their statements. How can someone expect what they say to be taken seriously if they don't treat their own thoughts with respect, let alone anyone else's?
Before anyone paints me with the hypocrite brush, yes. I have been known to pop off with a ludicrous statement or two. They are usually few and far between (I hope). I enjoy reasoned discussion, as do many with whom I have spoken on this site. I even enjoy it when discussions get a bit heated (but not to the point where intelligence goes out the window and invectives are all that remain).
The topic of Jesus's virginity (whether he be the Son of God, a prophet, merely a carpenter, or a fictional creation) is an interesting thought, but, again, not anything which can be firmly deduced.
Hvae to go along with Cancer on this one. Its is easy to tear Christianity from limb to limb just because we are not belivers. But what happened to respecting all?
I agree with MrLaven, that the subject of Jesus being a virgin or not is simply something like craving for sensation.
But it is however interesting of he had descendants or not - so was he married with maria magdalene or not, possible. It would have been considered a sin of a man establishes a family.
If you do believe in christianity (which I personally don't), especially that Jesus was the son of God, then this should be a very interesting subject. Is there a direct relative of God on this world?
sorry have to correct myself there. I meant: it would NOT have been considered a sin if a man wanted to establish a family - no matter how holy he was considered.
Requiem, you're right on the phrasing of the question... I just truncated it. Probably a little too much.
I have found most Americans to be grossly lacking when it comes to religious education. What's worse, is most Americans seem more than willing to criticize mainstream religion. You are a complete idiot if you criticize something you know nothing about. You come off as nothing but an ignorant fool.
The Bible says...
I get so sick of hearing that. Ask your recusant where and they look at you dumbfounded (You will find that whenever I give a biblical reference I always cite the passage).
On the topic of Christianity, I would not call myself a Christian. A Christian defined in modern-day terms would be a person who follows the teachings of a Christian Church. I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, as interpreted by me.
Jesus had nothing to do with the Crusades or Salem witch trials. It is Christians who make a mockery of Christianity. I challenge anyone to find fault in the Philosophy of Jesus.
I would also like to comment that Ghandi himself adopted the teachings of Jesus Christ for his passive resistance - (All of you who haven't should watch the movie Ghandi). Through this he was able to unite Hindis, Christians, Jews and Sikh Muslims under one roof.
it is a matter of faith, if you think that Jesus was the son of God, you are probably going to say that he was, if you don't than you probably think He wasn't or don't care.
personaly, i think He was which would make Him a very famous person which had the same views on sex as myself. that is just me though, i personaly enjoy having something to believe in.
i gotta agree with you Cancer, people bash Christianity so much, and like you said i can see why. people have assumed that nothing was ever messed up with the Bible, and generaly quote it and don't give rationale to it, they simply say because it is so or something.
i myself, also like, and follow , well as much as i can, Jesus' philosphy.
and yeah, if you haven't studied anything in this, and don't have the faith, please make no comment, i know nothing about Islam so i keep out of that.
also this is a stupid thread like Requiem (hope i got it right) and someone else said, this can never be proven, it is ONLY speculation, and well, can't be debated either way really.
anyway, that is only what i think
that's interesting... now i'm going to be thinking about that for awhile now
DeathIsBecoming:
I never said it was a stupid thread, so I hope that it was simply a lack of a comma in that sentance.
This topic, like the existence and nature of a God (whose God? Which God? Whose conception of God?), while seemingly inflammatory, can be intelligently discussed from both sides of the issue. I was grumpy at some of the knee jerk reactionary comments from either side, and some non-relevant, not the topic itself.
opps sorry Requiem, i must have mixed you up with someone else, either that or i am halucinating again, i'd believe either
*grin* Is ok.
The second half was correct - I don't think it can be resolved sucessfully either way.
The discussion, however, could be very interesting.
i wounder if there are texts around, i.e much more than JUST the Bible, for people to use in support of this.
mostly people don't have much of a base for their opinon, or atleast aren't saying it
i love this thread, very informative, i've learned much from all of you.
keep up the good work.
i love Jesus.
i think he was a virgin i am a christian and agreeing with what Khayman said the bible does llok down on sex before marrige
I don't think Jesus was a virgin. I mean how could he be. We all have certain needs and he had to have those needs to.
First off, where does anyone get that we're trashing Christianity in here? Just because someone shares their opinion that conflicts with someone elses doesn't mean they're trashing it.
And personally I find it very likely that Jesus was not only not a virgin, but was married, probably to Mary Magdalene, and had children. Of couse, I also do not believe that Jesus was immaculately concieved as a result of god's direct intervention.
if christ is gods concieved son..then where is gods wife in all this ...was god even married? ;p
A traditional Christian holds a deep-rooted faith that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was God incarnate. Jesus was of immaculate conception. Jesus was not a man, but God, filled with the Holy Spirit and above us all. He was pure.
When you make idiotic statements like Of course Jesus had sex... He was a man.. A man has needs. You are illustrating both your ignorance and arrogance. Ignorance, in that you don't know who/what Jesus really was. Arrogance, in that you are comparing yourself (a man with needs) to God incarnate.
I have yet to hear one argument from anyone in this thread that supports any position that Jesus was not as he is biblically described. I have read a lot of statements of belief, but not a single statement backed by anything.
So if you're tossing out statements about who/what Jesus really was or what Jesus really did and have nothing to back up your statements, your statements appear to be nothing more than dribble aimed at reducing Jesus's accomplishments.
At least provide reference to an Apocrypha volume that states Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a relationship that was more than biblically implied.
At least provide reference to an Apocrypha volume that states Jesus had brothers and/or sisters.
Did he ever exist?
No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. Devastating to historians, there occurs not a single contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus got written well after the life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings. Although one can argue that many of these writings come from fraud or interpolations.
Have a look at this page for some very interesting arguments...
http://www.nobeliefs.com/exist.htm
hmmm the whole thing is rather Kooky, but I for one don't think it really matters if he is a "virgin" or not. I mean I know so many non-virgins that are awesome and just as normal as anyone else so I don't see why it would even be an issue.
ok cancer read the divinchi code or anything about the knights tepler
Still you miss the point.
Christians don't have to prove the existence of Jesus. They have faith.
If you're attempting to disprove Jesus's existence, then you are in fact trashing Christianity. You're telling a person of faith what they believe to be true, isn't.
There is evidence of Jesus's life. Offhand I can list the Shroud of Turin and Veronica's Veil. You can dispute the scientific relevance/authenticity of each, but these icons exist.
More on point with my personal views, are the teachings of Jesus. This is what is important... Not whether he was a virgin, brother, husband, father, or existed at all.
I won't tread to far on this subject mostly because I don't feel like listening to people bitch if I offend them. But I've seen too many examples of where the story of christ was trampled and ignored and only brought up when in times of violence, and self righteousness.
The meaning of the story, kindness, generosity, and healing seems lost behind the "religion" Which I find complete bullshit. I'm not saying everyone is like that but hey, an assload of them are.
People now use the story to say, "oh well, I'm not Jesus" when they fuck up something or hurt someone else. It's a cop out, "Oh well I'm not a saint, I won't even try because only Jesus can be a saint"
Of course people aren't saints but that doesn't mean we should be assholes instead.
I only get angry with religion because it seems to cover up and destroy the real message underneath.
Faith is a wonderful thing......blind faith.....is a crippling disfigurement....
I do believe that jesus was as much man as god......as that was the whole damn point to the celestial experiment......for god to live as man lives......
and to understand as man understands
and that would in essence require the acts in which man subjects himself.......
but then again I am excessively drunk at the moment
.02$
Let us not forget he was born a man and was the son of god, for all the bashers there are three to form one, the father, the son, and the holy spirit. To get on with it he was a man and if constantly bribed by lucifer for all of the powers in the world, he probably hade better things to do than get a peice of tale, Some of you people are pathetic, there's nothing even humirous about the question that I might debate about. And also he died and came back to prove he was the son of god. Wheither you believe in these things or not is up to you. Although I have to ask even if he was a man that did good things for people, why do you ask perverse questions over a humble story, myth, etc. Ask yourself would the humor be the same to torch a sleeping homeless persons and there children under a bridge. Stop beating the dog that's dead. If your gonna bash a religion, I suggest you start off with second hand stories .
Morrigon
The whole knowing cool none virgins thing ..OMG!!! so funny ROFL!!!
Faith is faith and who is anyone to question anyone else's beliefs??
Unless of course the one who belives is insane and wishes harm upon others in their sick evaluation of what they perceive to be factual......oh no this could get messy .....I wish I could remember what I studied in Theology ...Oh well no matter..
*runs off to be a happy athiest*
are some of you having fun shredding a religion? lets have a little respect at least some people do believe in it.
lol, i am a christian, at most i find this arguments both funny and only annoying. like cancer has stated, their only evidence is, i think He wasn't. and men have needs. what about a-sexuals. any "needs" that we have don't invovle other people. so i will simple disarm your arguments with an argument of similar logic. i think Jesus probably was an asexual.
please people don't form your arguments just to be in the opposing view point, i think that several of you just came up with your answer on the spot just to be different, or to seem "non-christian" because it is becoming more and more fashionable to do so lately.
as to asking for proof that the biblical account is wrong......there is no PROOF that it is right either...only faith...
I believ in the teachings of the man jesus christ....i'm just not so trusting of the divine origins of said individual..I feel that an inspired man could be just as much a force for good...but would realise that his words would be heard better if people thought him divine as most "kings" or rulers of the time claimed divine origins...
Keep in mind i agree whole heartedly with Cancer. I've said before believe in the word as stated in the book of John, not the Dogma of man that has followed after.
Let's say your a Christian and you believe what you've been taught growing up. He was probably a virgin.
Now lets look it as if he was a normal man. From what I've read he would be a Rabbi, could Rabbi's of the time have sex?
He like Lutheran were not traditional Rabbi's or priests. They were both considered radicals. The Dogma of the establishments had changed to money laundering. The establishment had him killed to prevent changes.
I believe he would have stuck to the laws governing a Rabbi with the exceptions of his radical points that god loves you even if the church doesn't.
Jesus, Mohamad, Lutheran and Gahndi. Four of the greatest men to walk with a new message. All repeating each other, PEACE
from what I have found out:
No "Jesus" did not die a virgin...
and that he did infact have intercourse with Mary Magdallin...
So in that case that would make jesus a pedophile... and by right he did deserve to die.
well the second part is of my own conclusion... but it would fit the circumstances
I know we're all supposed to respect other people's beliefs and all but if you were to look at Christian history and how things were in the past, it's no wonder people are attacking it. Their start was by going to other people's lands and saying if you dont believe in my god, you die. Why should anybody have respect for that? Do you see any other religion advertising their faith on tv? or do you see any other religion with their foot in the government door? No. You have people who believe other ways trying to say HEY we don't appreciate you trying to walk all over us. That's why we DO fight back. You have people taking Harry Potter out of school libraries because they claim it contains black majick for frickin sakes. I have my own personal reasons for not liking something and mostly it's because of the history. All man-made religions are there to seperate society, not bring us together. That's why i'd rather be religionless and i'm happy not being one of these people outside of the box.
I think Mr.Laven has a good point. I also dont knwo quite where Jews stand on sex before marriage, but I imagined in would be very much the same.
One could ask about Mary Magdelin, however, one could ask a lot of things, as we cannot stand beside the belief that teh Bible has not at some point been incorrectly edited...
now do you think that i would believe that jesus died a virgin? No way. even the jewish men all into religion also gets a peice of booty. I highly doubt that jesus lived for 30 years without a booty call. Well if you remember correctly there is about 15 years missing so he could of gotten some guring those fifiteen years that we don't know about.
i beileve he was a virgin because the bible says that its a sin if u have sex before ur married
Closed because the stupidity content of this thread has exceeded acceptable limits.
