the world of witchcraft and magic is sowide when it comes to reasearch these day that i was wondering if anyone of the more experienced could point me in the way of some valuable resources, such as old practices, spells, books, symbols really any thing would be useful. my mother is pagan and leans toward things more in the native american nature of thing which i dont understand and she doesnt understand my need for something different liek actual spells or symbols and the like... help
I send you a link to get things rolling for you. I hope it helps.
i havent studied witchcraft well enough as to point you in the most useful direction. sorry
I'll suggest any of Silver Ravenwolf's books (To Stir A Magick Cauldron, To Ride A Silver Broomstick, etc) for beginners. Its very easy to understand, pretty amusing and realistic, and covers most of the basics.
well I would need to know a little more about your interests and intended usage before I could work out what info would be more to your liking...but personally I think most of my suggestiona would be more along the same lines as you mothers.....but feel free to msg me
I'l try to help if I can....
(Looks up my encyclopedias on magic and superstition.)
The most indiscreet of all magicians was Levi. He spilled
his guts, sang like a bird, if you want practical magick,
he is meant to be a good source.
read some book the book of the red dragon , the book of the king salomon ...... i give you a little list if you want with very interresting book
i will give you this one, like it very much. you could find alot of info on there :)
www.alchemylab.com
Good Authors:
Ravenwolf
Buckland
Cunningham
Amber K
I use the majority of their books in my studies. I hope this helps
tehes are some of the books i started out with
1. the complete book of spells,
Ceremonies & magic.
Author Migene Gonzalez-Wippler
2. Wiccan beliefs & Practice
Author Gary Cantrell
3. Encyclopedia of magical herbs
Author Scott Cunningham
Another great author that i have several books by is Gernia Dunwich
as a witch of 7 years i can tell you it can't be done lightly, one wrong slip while doing a spell can through the balance off and completely screw up everything. Be careful my friend. Refer to LEVI
My mom's boyfriend is Wiccan and I have too been wanting to be apart of the teachings, so his friend, whom is a practicing Wiccan, is going to help me get everythign started. I'll be putting someof the spells into my journal, so check there for some and I'll let you know when I have put new ones up. If it would help at all.
if you want.... messege me any time and i ask any thing.... i'll be there if you need me ^_^ any one for that matter....lol
Well, my first suggestion would be to not jump into spells right away. Its tempting, I know, but very dangerous if you are not experienced.
There are some Shamanic practices that do involve spell and ritual-a combination of your mother's beliefs and what you are looking for. Daermon would be the one I know could help you in that direction.
As for books, I do not encourage reading Silver Ravenwolf. Many will, but I...don't. I won't go any further than that. I do recommend Buckland, Cunningham, and 21st Century Wicca by Jennifer Hunter.
Also, the website http://wicca.timerift.net is a great, to the point site full of info.
Okay folks, there are other things than wicca out there.
For starters, I'm going to suggest this: The easiest thing to find is usually the worst thing to learn from.
ie: no silverraven wolf unless you would like to be considered a fluff bunny. I suggest anything by cunningham, buckland, or frost. And a good website is www.wicca.com.
Also consider the following
Satanism:
The Satanic Bible
The Satanic Rituals
The Satanic Witch
The Devil Speaks
....anything regarding LaVey
Next we have Chaos Magick
(and this next part isn't to dis anyone)
If you don't like reading and trying to understand what the fuck the auther is saying, start in this order
Condenced Choas---Phil Hine
Prime Chaos---Phil Hine
Liber Chaos---Peter Caroll
LIber Null and Psychonaut--Pete again
other wise flip them upside down. and those are just starters---check out Chaosmatrix.org.
Frater Rath will be along in a minute to correct what I fucked up but there are other things than wicca.
What the hell happened to individuality?
generally the only thing that alot of people say in response to someone's questions regarding the occult is "be carefull" and "dont do any spells...you have to study for years first."
ok to quote pope pete of the chaos magick paradigm, "look before you leap".
magick is supposed to be fun....also, risk, and danger can be fun. dont waste time studying for years. not that there is anything wrong with studying...but, when you learn something new TRY IT OUT.
also, it's important to constantly expand what you can do. to paraphrase Frater Palimpesest's book "the paradigmal pirate"
when invoking demons, look for the ones that provide an element of danger. ones with descriptions like "may cause permanent possession.....and INVOKE THAT ONE."
caution can be good....but not when it stops you from doing any magick.
-in chaos
oh ya. to answer your question. i'd try sigils and mantras first. there is a high rate of success with these, as well as the fact that they require no dogmatic belief. austin osman spare devised the method of creating them. if you're intrested in how to create one (and they can be used for pretty much anything....well, maybe not control of the whole world...but they do work)
let me know. also, in the links part of my profile, i'm sure one of the sites on there has instructions on how to make a sigil.
-eliminate parsimony
Well all I can tell you is to study all books and see the different ways of doing things and yes somethings are going against each other but you will find works for you and each witch/warlock are different(sorry for anything misspelled)
It all depends on what you are into, yousee your ideals of magick are most likely different then your mothers, ans as such, you should look into what, you feel to be comfortable with.
There are many diffenent witchcraft outlets to choose from:
Wicca
Paganism
Voodooism/poppet dolls
Satanism
Shawmanismb (sorrie spelling)
Druidism
Elemental magick
Amulet/talismanic magick
Mojo magick (charm bags)
Herbalist magick (see about druidism)
there are many others to choose from, i jsut cant remember them all right now... also there are different pantheons to choose from aswell so you have quite the list to go with.
And as for soing spells, yes learn from them all that you can and them attempt the spell, if you uncomfortable about a spell or anything of the like, dont hestitate in asking any of us... if one has no answers for you, someone else might have what you are looking for.
Cheers and do keep in mind while doing spells...
"An it harm none, love,
And do what thou wilt!"
The wiccan rede
see: Scott Cunningham. he writes some of the best witchcraft books around, especially for the beginner. think of him as the author of The Idiot's guide to Wicca (which surprisingly is good enough)
don't see: Raven Silverwolf, the Satanic Bible, or anything that mentions or references The Craft.
Well spoken greyeyes. Just say no to the satanic bible.
Scott Cunningham was the best. Mr. Cunningham passed away some years ago shortly after he finished his last book, 'Living Wicca'. But if you want a good place to start I would try 'Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner'. But I feel other venues are worth investigating.
However, I would steer you away from Raymond Buckland; admittedly, it is a personal bias, for some like his work.
Laugh as you will, but my first book on Wicca was "The Illustrated Guide to Wicca." by Tony and Aileen Grist. Its *very* basic and not exactly chalk full of die hard information, but it gives a good base for reading other books.
Atleast it did for me.
The next books I read were the Scott Cunningham Guide to a Solitary Practionar (I cant spell). I also like D J Conway. Im not a huge fan of Bucklands, but its not bad.
I am drawn to tarot cards and runes. I havent found a really great Tarot book yet. Any suggestions?
Athena, I know many others will disagree with me, but I say, start with the basics. The Rider-Waite deck and book is my personal favorite, and about as basic as you can get.
Somebody has talking about the red dragon, book of old spells : I HAVE IT !!! This book's really good... but becarrefull of what you'll do with...
Theres some great information here, especially for peope lik eme who want to know more, but dont kow anything :-)
I really liked the alchemy ite that Freak recommended.
Here's the best advice anyone could give. Read everything. Read what people think you should and shouldn't. Then make your own decision on what way feels right for you, not what someone else thinks is right for them.
evry one is telling to read this and read that .......i wont but i will suggest you read every thing you can. you will now when you find it , if it is right one for you
and start there.
SilentSway and vampricdemon have said it all...
Read, read, read! Read evrything you can and formulate your own opinions and perspectives. The best thing you can do is educate yourself to the fullest.
Oh, and if you meet creepy wiccans or witches, stay clear of them. You get that creepy feeling for a good reason!
I don't know how many here would agree with this but let the universe provide.
Wander your local library or book store, the right book will find you...
I have been a Witch for the past ten years and have not taken the path of ritual magick lightly.
If you are wanting to find out more about witchcraft etc... go to www.avatarsearch.com it is an occult search engine. It can lead you to many places.
As a beginner I would suggest you look into workbooks before actually using magicks. (Alester Crowley)
As a High Priestess I do recommend for all of my potentials and my coveners a list of reading materials, which if you are interested I can send you.
Also remember the Internet is your friend. There really are many sites that will teach you the basics, and there are some teachers who are willing to do lessons via e-mail.
the thing about being a witch is learning and practice...the most powerful spells are the ones you make up yourself...in true witchcraft, one has to spend a year and a day on learning their path, using and praticing till that time when they can honestly call themseves witches...
internet and book stores are great...try ebay also, lots of people have one-of- a kind books that provide good insight
excuse me?? did you say in "true witchcraft"? that's sounds a bit ethnocentricit to me. and as for being "true witchcraft" i only know of one occult branch that does the year and a day practice. besides, almost every other branch has some sort of initiation, or trial period, before one becomes "initiated".
i would never claim my paradigm as the "true one". granted, occassionaly i may be guilty of it, but that's simply personal preference.
but still, i would never say it was the "true" (insert said paradigm here) witchcraft.
Can someone send me a link to find more infor.. about witchcraft.

i should have phrased that a bit better..as in true witch, i ment ones that take the craft seriously, not just to dabble into when your feeling down or want to exact reveange on someone...sorry if i offended anyone with my lack of proper phrasing
i havent studyed in it to much lately and i've had some bad experiences in it but i was wondering if some one could send me a link so that i can get back in to it
right.. u should never practice witchcraft to harm someone else.
I am also on a learning path in this disciplin.
The most important thing I have laerned is that it ISN'T about having old spellbooks, symbols and suchlike.
Its about yourself. Your heart, your soul, your "will" and your mind.
PLEASE people, there are other things out there than wicca.
And if you are going to go for wicca---DON"T READ SILVER RAVENWOLF.
Some chick steal your boyfriend?
Burn her house down.
Someone call you a slut or a whore.
Curse the fuck out of them.
Quit with the fucking three fold BULLSHIT!
I'm sick of trying to explain to you people that there is more to magick than protection spells. More to magick than wicca. Learn, fine, but expand in what you learn. Don't let yourself believe in the misconception that if you send out a protection spell, you'll get in a car accident the next day. Please stop with the bullshit.
Well...
Im not a Wiccan.
Im not interested in practising revenge spells.
Im not the type of person to think that I can solve my problems with "magik."
Life involves your head, heart and soul, and with those three ingredients, it makes it worth living.
Yes more and more people are searching for the answer and turning away from organized religion....I feel organized religion has failed us as a whole...Organized religion is for the sheep that will follow blindly and believe what they are told to believe instead of discovering what they believe within themselves....
Come rise like sheep to the rythm of the war drum. Pay no mind to the rebel, pay no mind to the rebel.
I don't think Christianity was ever a very organized religion, with so many different branches always breaking away from the original. Too many churches, too many sinners inside.
"I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man"
I swear that today, the occult is more organized than Christianity by all means. Though it may be theorized that we will break apart "save yourself" from each other, today we hold truer to our beliefs than most of those so called "Christians".
But we're getting off topic.
I' will agree with those here who say to read EVERYTHING....yes....even silvertwit
every pile of garbage has a gem in it somewhere....
the main thing I say about magic is that it is simply a focussing of your own will....and a use of that focus....
the rest is window dressing in my mind
personally i am of the wiccan style,,,but i modify it to my own
I agree with the idea of walking into your library or local bookstore and letting the book find you... rather than you hunting around... that is of course unless you come from my island where anything to do with witchcraft has been banned by law! You could also opt to search amazon... they have a good selection of books about witchcraft... and everything that goes with you... see which one catches your eye and go for it.
I found several helpful books, buckies blue book especialy, but the majority of my books are black magic related.
Ok my bit in this thread is this..
I myself do not consider myself to be wiccan, I am a solitairy practicioner.. altho i did study wicca for some 19 odd years... And during that time i have found.. that it is with in you to find what works best for you... because what may work well for me.. may not work as well for you, as we each have our own ideals and mindset when it comes to things.. it is often whatever type spell, or incantation you feel comfortable with that will make your experience a more positive one.. i even have had positive experiences with mere visualization without the need for spells... it is inside you that the power lies, not with in the spell... it is merely your belief in the spell that causes it to come to fruition... and I know there will be many who disagree with me.. i am merely stating my opinion..i have read ravenwolf, in my earlier years.. yes a few good things.. spells pfft..they didnt appeal, but her basic visualization techniques do provide a basis to the most eager beginner... but in your quest for knowledge, i think you shouldn't put stock into any one venue in particular... try many things until you feel comfortable.. and implement as many different things as you feel comfortable with.. make it your experience.... and don't follow any one book as a divinitave authority.
i havent studdied witchcraft that much but i do have some spells in my journal you can look at if you like, there are a few simple ones in there
Daermon has a good point, literature is always a good place to start... but its were in that mass to begin...
I am Wiccan. Wicca is my relegion. That is my faith, the core of my beliefe system. Witchcraft and Magik is what I practice. Sometimes I use Magik as a part of a Wiccan ritual or in worshop, but sometimes I use it to channel my energy into whatever goal I wish to achieve. Not all Wiccan's practice Magik, (most do, but not all.) and not all people who use magik are Wiccan. You will have to do some research and soul searching to decide if you want to approach Magic from a religious aspect or if you just wanna dabble in some "Kitchen Witchery" or do you want to harness power. Just remember the three-fold law...anything you do, be it for good or bane, will come back to you three-fold. I live by these rules when it comes to Magic:
As harm comes to none; do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
Witch...heal thyself.
if you have any specific questions, drop me a message.
i am not wiccan but a witch who follows the egyptian pathanon. and i agree with those of you who says its the book that should find you, just as it is that magick is neither black ro white, but wither the intention you are using it for is good or bad.
Agree..the book will come to you....it will be drawn to your life force
A realy interesting book can be the necronomicon too, depending on your curiousities and which copy you get your hands on.
Their are many books that can point you in the right direction at all book stores
For my own experience I have mostly made enchantments and for does who think spells, enchantment and witchcraft most rime and be quite long, I am sadly to say that for such thinking you are most wrong for at least enchantments must flow in your soul fell the power and want it. There are not many words for in the end you might just end up having a poem instead of a real enchantment. As I have said before must flow thru your very soul and want it and hopefully your mouth will open and the right words will come out to eventually create what you so honorably desire.
I got to busy to study witchcraft years back but when I did I never needed help knowing what to study. If I came upon something new I knew if it was right for me or not. Perhaps a better question is where to look which has been answered already.
I agree that chaos magick is very good and quick to get into, and without all the dogma as well. Magick does not depend on what dogma you follow!!!!! It works on a set of principals that can be followed no matter what "god/s" you believe in. (That, I won't even get into)
If you want to learn about chaos magick, study the above works, but don't forget about Liber KKK. Great stuff.
I also highly recommend Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig to any beginner.
It is written toward a beginner, but is a very good guide for ritual magick.
Anything by Crowley is good, but not necessarily for the beginner.
I wouldn't recommend LaVey (satanism) mainly for the fact that in the Satanic Bible (which I've read a few times) he rants on about how there's no god but the self, then goes on to describe magick rituals (which must tap into some energy, right?)
But Modern Magick is good, and Modern Sex Magick (by the same author) altho being mainly about sex magick (obviously) delves into the theorems and principals behind ALL magick, so that it can be done without dogma.
Either way, think for yourself, read alot, and use it for the right purposes. End of rant.
willowshadowfox is right....at least I believe so...that the power is not in the spell...it is in the caster...a spell is nothing more than a very specific prayer....a focusing point for the user to center on one topic...as most people require such things as ritual to get in the right frame of mind.....
mind over matter and all that...
Yes, this is true. Anyone who knows and understands the theorems behind magick knows that ritual and ceremony are merely devices that are used to aid the mind in generating power. That's why it's important to choose the "style" of magick that feels best to you. I don't care if you're calling on Jehovah, the Goddess, or friggin Zeus. You're all calling upon the same energy source. Once a person has decided what they feel comfortable with, then comes the question, how does one generate and direct this energy, and how should it be used? Two of these questions are technical (and there are many techniques) And the last is purely moral. All three questions are far too long for me to discuss here.
And it's true, ritual isn't TRULY necessary, nor are any of the energy manipulation techniques I mentioned above. But very few people can achieve results with their minds alone. Some are naturals. Most require training.
Oh forgot one for books to read.
This one is for Chaos Magick
The Paradigmal Pirate
by Joshua S. Wetzel
(aka Fra. Palimpsest)
dont' go running to the book stores just yet. It's not in print yet. It will be next year so keep an eye open for it.
Forgive me for bragging but we have personally signed editions, being friends of the author and artist. Numbers 252 and 253 of the first edition. I'm pretty sure every member of the IOT got one before we did.
This book discusses Liber LLL and Liber Ventum.
And as for Modern Magick, if you're a beginner, I wouldnt recommend starting off with it, it's lengthly and if you bore easy it's a bad idea at first. IT IS HELPFUL. But not for a beginner.
FromNothing is correct---sorry if I got that part of your name wrong dear---Satanism isn't a good beginner practice, I suggested it because it corrects a lot of those misconstrued notions about Satanists.
Crowley IS BY NO MEANS a good beginner book. Go to your local book store and pick up "777 and other quabalistic writings" You wont' understand shit at first. Besides Crowley's actual magickal practice books are very difficult to find. However, Diary of a Drug Feind was good, the tiny bit I read, dont' have it personally.
very true blossom...I would not suggest crowley to a beginner..not because there is anything wrong....simply because most of his writings seem to assume some level of advancement prior to reading them
some other good books are wicca by Scott cunningham , living wicca scott cunningham, everyday magic by Dorothy Morrison and Hereditary Witchcraft .
scott cunningham is good, so is buckland, frost, anything but silver ravenwolf or dj conway
I found this post very helpful with useful allocation to book resources. Thanks.
I am not a mage or anything, but I am learning. I have many friends who dabble in the arts. One guy is very good, and another and another.
My past experiences have been from dungeons and dragons as a kid, and playing games workshop (www.gamesworkshop.com) I also played Ultima Online for a while and these things have taught me a basic understanding of what magic is and can do.
I would suggest really talking to other members at Vampire Rave.
If you want spells then check my Journal out I am trying to put all the spells from a book I have on there. Mainly tarot.
A very interesting thread, but it has been going on a bit, one definately for the archives!
