Ok...I have heard people get huffy about vampires being seen as "evil". Now one of the raves favorite authors on vampires Anne Rice has stated she will no longer write about vampires due to a dicovery of god in her life. I was wondering what the members of Vr feel about this...especially the ones so upset with the association of evil with vampires. Or do they feel this is another attack against vampires? I've heard so many opinions on how the media and movies makes vampires "look evil" in the publics eyes. Now that an esteemed author has said what she said...What is the thoughts of vampirism now and will it affect anyone on VR?
vampires can be evil....but its their instinct...they cant help that taste or sight of blood...just like mortals cant resist chocolate
i think it is a shame that ane rice isnt going to write about vampyres anymore and i have already said what i think about her new book.
she has been a major influence for many people regarding vampires, she got people interested in them. she didnt only show an evil side of vampires, she made them desirable creatures.
im gonna miss her
lmao at usedheartxx...well put....i am not overly offended it's her choice but i think that she is trying to say that vampires are evil by saying that...
it does not make sense to me that rice would stop writing about vampires after finding god. he was there all along and she still wrote. her vampires were as diverse as the united states. some evil & some not. vampires have a charisma about them, they are like highly sexed humans. not as far as lusting but just a highly sexed nature.
if not writing about vampires makes sense to her so she can lead a christian life, then i am overjoyed for rice. but i think you can do both.
But having said that...She is one of the people that made vampires out to be sexed out. The mass thought of vampires is that they ARE evil and souless devils here to feed on the living. I mean...if you think about...what is really that sexy about having to survive by taking anothers life through draining them of their blood...and it can't be dead blood...they have to drain the actual life from their prey.
it wont effect me much, her best books were Interview an blood an gold, out of all the vampire croncles thos two were the best. i am a fan of the books tho so im not bashing her other books, i have all the vampire croncles, my memnock the devil is even signed by anne rice
well i have met rice and the thing is that since her husbands death she has kinda been spiraling in limbo and she is just tired of the same thing...people need to respect her for her decisions and her contribution to the vampire culture...she has been one of the biggest influences for vampries for over 16 years almost and that is a long time...so instead of giving her greif for her decision we should all applaud her and try to support her with whatever she decides to write or do next...becuase believe me it will be good and wortht the reading of...
In my opinion Ann Rice new direction won't compromise at all her writings in the Vampire Chronicles, Vampires could have been depicted as evil in the media but in the end it's up to the consumer, reader or researcher to come up with his personal view about the Vampiric nature, being a predator has always been summed up with being evil, this even went with say lions & sharks but as often that isn't neccesary the case. To the ones who take genuine interest in vampires to many a time they have been depicted as any human being would, capable of every evil yet often disciplined to make some good out of it as well..
I don't recall her saying that vampires were evil in the link I read. Just that she promised herself she wouldn't do anything else untill she finished writing about Jesus. That she flet like it was time to devote her career to God for a while.
I don't think it should have an affect either way.
feels to me like she has turned her back on that which made her famous and rich in the first place-
Thats what I think. She glorifies it but now because she found god she wants nothing to do with speaking of unholy things. Wouldn't it be funny if an actual vampire got to her and threatened her if she didn't stop writing about them...lol
i believe that there is no way to suddenly find god in her life she had him all along or she didn't and she didn't give a shit people like that piss me off i admire her writing but will not defedn ignorant assumptions
We vampires are not ALL evil..... we just enjoy certain things that maybe seen as "evil".
While I am on this subject, one could also make the statement of what is evil? Evil in itself, is completely and totally relative to what the individual's beliefs as its opposite. Those terrorists are a prime example. They see us as "evil" for what we believe, and we see them as "evil" for what the believe. There really isn't a single definition for evil because it means something different to each person.
Just my thoughts.
I don' think her opinion on vampires being evil will affect to many people. Everyone has their own opinion about everything. I don't believe vampires are evil. I believe anyone or thing can be evil. And I don't recall her specifically saying she was done writing about vampires.
If it was me I wouldn't be influenced after all she writes on fiction. The I have found god thing,I think it's another excuse to stop writing about ampires. It's her choice to do so and I respect it.
I think that Anne Rice did an excellent job with her other books, and i see why she would be any less of an author when writing about a new subject.. after all, authors often switch subject matter, and they are not so heavily criticised as people are doing to her.. I feel that i will read her new books and if i like them, i shall continue to do so.. she is a wonderful author.
Vampires are both good and evil, just like people. What I think is that Anne Rice just wants a break and is using God as an excuse. She will write again about vampires never fear. It`s in a writer`s nature to write, and Anne Rice is too embroiled in her vampire characters to stop now. Cheer up! :)
Sad to know Anne Rice is no longer writing. Glad I got her autograph before she chose to change her path
it is a shame that she isn't writing vampire books anymore. i don't necesarily think that vampires are evil creatures. anne, in blackwood farm, potrays quinn as being imortally afraid of Lestat. it turns out that lestat is very forgiving eventhough he has the power to take quinn out if he wants.
i am deeply upset by the news of Ann Rice not writing about vampires anymore and i wish they would stop making us look bad.
ok...thats my point...Anne Rice made vempires out to be sensual sexy creatures...Bram Stokersw made dracula out to be a Love stricken killer bent on destroying all in his way to get to Mina. he slew everyone else
Anne Rice will be on CNN tonight at 10 pm
http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/
eurch... so a writer of fiction decides to change path... a person makes a decision... big deal... get over it.
she writes FICTION.. not some sort of BIBLE FOR THE MORONIC!
That doesnt bother me gorey...what Im want to know ... is how the die hard "vampire" feels and if Anne Rice herself STILL believes in their existance.
I hope that answer was MORONIC enough for you to understand gorey.
And yes...the way most people use Anne Rice as a reference on this site...maybe they do consider her work like a bible...
I mean gorey...WE all know YOU know everything and EVERYTHING you say is true and valid and without contention.
So yeah... maybe some of the MORONS on this site will appreciate it.
vampyres can be on the side of good or evil. do not forget evil is a state of mind
no they cant
read every archival journal of vampires...there is no account of that...EVER!!!!!
this isn't ANGEL...where a gypsy curses a vampire with a "SOUL" which is why he is good...and SPIKE has a frigging v-chip like cartman in his skull....but oh wait...Cartmans not real....double oh no!!!
neither is spike or angel.
louis...was a "fictional character"
lestat= fictional character
spike= not real
Angel= David Borealas
The guy from forever night= unemployed and not real
Blackula...really black, but not real
armand= fictional
show me an actual article showing a vampire was kind and Ill change my opinion.
Only in fiction has a vampire been portrayed as nice
I just read the cnn article about ANNE RICE, as far as Im concerned she only wants to recreate the bible in her own image...
How revolting.
i think that its a good idea that she try her hand at something else...after all, what else can she write aabout that has to do with vampyres? she written so much that anymore would be redundant
well...so many people take her writings as fact...she can always obscure the vampire more than what it is.
anne rice has stated she wants johnny depp to portray jesus if they make her movie about jesus
WTF....kill that bitch and kill her now!!!!
What that's not good, Ann Rice one of the
greatest has turned to the light side. I don't see it, she must have falling and hit her head.
Evil is such a misused word. To followers of god we are evil, but to us we are normal. If I were to be in their shoes I would have to call myself evil, if one of them was in my shoes I would have to call them brainwashed.
lucious... you might not have noticed... but I was actually in agreement with you. You said yourself further down that too many people take her books as fact.
My point exactly. We're on the same side here.
You said also the "Die Hard "Vampire"" it was almost like you were calling a lot of people fakers... I have the very same opinion.
Yeah her books are good. But too many people live it out as bible... or follow it as if it is true. This has made me completely turn away from the stuff. As it has become so generic and boring.
Her books painted a picture of the stereotypical "vampire" maybe now the kiddies bible isn't going to blur the image any more...
For some it's Anne Rice for others are the movies. This is something we can't change it.
After all before we read a book or watch a movie there's not written: all of this is fiction don't believe it -_-
It is with everything not only vampires-_-
Anyway I agree with all those who said that vampires can be evil and good. And I can go on with the evil and good topic cause there is much more to say.
But why picking on her only?
After all even in the movies and other authors describe vampires as evil, she's not the only one!
Great post LostInLife.
I never read Anne Rice, so no, her decisions will not have any effect in my view on vampires.
If she chose another way, well, I think all writers have that right...Specially, like Gorey said, if they write fiction.
Just because Anne Rice decided that she woun't write about vampires anymore, it doesen't mean that people are going to be out of "rule books", because, regarding vampirism, as far as I see it, there aren't any.
Exactly why would anyone care?
Still the vampirism belief is individual.
I will truely miss Anne Rice's vampire book but i shall support her no matter what. I am a belive in God and i feel that it has only helped in my life and finding my true vampire self. Trust me im no bible thumper or do i push what i belive in onto anyone else but im VERY tired of being asked if i am evil and bow down to the devil. That to me is JUDGEING.
Anne Rice romanticized the vampire. If you compare Dracula (by Bram Stoker) to Anne's Chronicles it's a big thing or big difference! But, same thing, they're all vampires!
i will miss anne rice's writing. it doesn't semm to make sense to stop writing only beacause she found god. maybe there are other reasons behind her decision.......

It makes sense to stop writing a genre when the muse is no longer with you- when it is simply no longer part of your world. I don't think it is necessarily easy for Anne to make the announcement to all her millions of fans that there will no more new vampire stories. But this is her truth. And no one should have to live their life for someone else- let a lone a legion of people.
I know one thing for sure- if it weren't for Anne Rice, there would not be as many Vampire fans at present. Yes there were vampire fans before and after- but she is one of the largest modern-day contributors if not the largest in these times to the lore.
Anne Rice made a big impact on vampires. She will be missed very much. Her books brought vampires back into the limelight, so to speak. She showed the good and the bad. But as far as her new book, I am holding my reservations until after I read it. I know she says she has found God, but He has always been there. I don't think it will affect me at all. I think she wrote all she could write about vampires. She made them real to everyone who read her books. I do think it was just time that she went onto another series of books.
well its a toss up between...
RedQueen and Amducious
im on the fence on this one
you know i totally agree with Amducious
and anyone who went on the side Amducious did .,authors do change topic matter and well hey 16 yrs devoted to vampires is along time so why give her grief im a huge fan of hers and i will more then likely read what shes writing now and if i like it great if not i gave it a shot .....but someone said shes not the only author on the topic of vampires and they are right
we have
poppy z brite ..
laura k hamilton
tanith lee and so many more rice was not the only vampire author and many of the ones i did mention are still around writing ,,
whoever it was who said vampires is to blood as human is to chocolate very good analogy :)
vampires can be anything... I hate it whe npeople steriotype things...
"what Im want to know ... is how the die hard "vampire" feels and if Anne Rice herself STILL believes in their existance."
Lucios, WE can't answer for Anne Rice! Maybe you should attempt to contact her yourself!
So... all you can really ask is how the die-hard ~sanguin~ vampires feel about her change from one subject matter to the next! And even within that group, you'll find differences of opinion, because OPINION is all it is, love!
Vampires and the occult were far from her only books. Look up the Beauty books or for a truely good read: Feast of All Saints or Cry to Heaven.
None of these books she wrote long ago have vampires and were by far in my opinion here best works. So what is the big deal?

Not a big deal to me... 'Feast of all Saints' is my personal favorite of hers.
She sold out long ago for Interview in one interview denouncing Cruise for Lestat and his required changes to the story and the next praising it with a commercial for her next book.
Its her job to sell books. So our ideals mean little when it is her pay checks involved.
I perfered Cry to Heaven but yes Feast of All Saints was a wonderful book and a halfway decenct movie to boot.

I am partial to 'Feast' because of my love of New Orleans history. It is subject matter I could have seen myself write about, a paricular topic I have studied a lot about. She simply took facts and then made her own story about it- and that is what she is doing with her latest book- but some people do not understand how she can do that with Biblical history. It's just as easy, study the history- and create as a writer.
It's a new muse- rock on.

Yes, I loved the Showtime movie of Feast of All Saints as well.
funny thing is if we pay attention to her writings especially in memnoch the devil she mentions god..the devil and even jesus christ that right there shouldve been a hint she might at some point go in that direction it just so happens her world died the day her husband stan rice passed away and then she really saw what was important go away ...sucks and id never want to be in her spot cause it hurts horribly .this might be her way of getting through a tough time and dealing with it .but she has written many other books .east of eden..sleeping beauty series ..violin,,,, servant of the bones ..taltos ..the mummy several books that werent about vampires!
that makes me kinda sad i like her books they were interesting but oh well it really doesnt affect me what upsets me is that god is what made her decide this i have nothing against god nore do i for anyone who belives in him more power to you who am i to tell you what to think or belive in but god seems to be chnging so much and its kinda depressing but thats just my thought on it good thread
It doesn't matter much to me because my favorite works of hers don't involve vampires.....Servant of the Bones, The first three of the Witch Chronicles (The Witching Hour, Lasher and Taltos.), and The Mummy. Currently I am reading Violin & so far so good.
I loved Anne Rice's vampire novels. It's a shame that she quit writing them.
Anne Rice's vampires are but a part of a macrocosm that includes folklore, real vampyre cases, and the creations of such diverse authors as Jeanne Kalogridis, Richard Matheson, Brian Lumley, Poppy Z. Bright, and many others.
I was initially attracted to Rice's approach to vampyres in that I saw in herwriting a vehicle in which the reader is forced to reflect upon her/his own existence and belief systems. I also would argue that Rice was perhaps the first author to successfully raise the vampyre out of the morass of the Hollywood neck biter.
I think that Rice touched two important groups of readers: the casual "vampire" fan who loves a good thrill, and those of us who have adopted this as lifestyle or religion or whatever you wish to label it. As in all things there is diversity. Rice was successful in demonstrating that diversity among vampyres thus showing that there are necessary similarities among sentient social beings.
I have never, nor do I now associate the vampyre with evil any more than I would make the ludicrous statement that a tiger is "mean". The vampyre is a being that lives in a heightened state of existence. Whether vampyres (we) are immortal is not as important as how we live this life.
Sentience necessarily includes morality; the social mileu in which we function is governed by a moral sense much the same way as for "mortals". In this discussion of Rice's creations we are constantly and consistently speaking in moral terms.
I do have any problem whatsoever in the fact that Ms. Rice found God. If indeed God is the Giver of all Things Good, then her Gift was from God, and thus is inherently good - bearing in mind that my premise is that God IS good. But, for the sake of argument, we could say that God is evil, or at best apathetic. In that case one might say that the gift is amoral, or perhaps a morality play in waiting in which the creator chooses the path. What her writing has given those who made the choice to read it reflects a moral choice I believe that is ultimately to the highest good in the Platonic sense in that her characters constantly strove to be in the realm of the Eternal Ideas or Forms as Plato calls them in "The Republic".
Not anymore though. I'm sick of that subject already. In liu of a few intelligent replies, everything else is "i'll miss her work and Im sooo sad"
I believe opinions and statments like that will do more harm that good, but it will only further the view of dark haunting images that hollywood has forever thrived upon. I am sadden at the lost of such a talented writer on the beings that go bump in the night..

You are right- and in a few days when a newbie joins VR, you'll get a post saying "OMG! Anne isn't writing about vampires anymore?" Yeah, sure you're a fan...
or- "Who's Anne Rice?"
We've beat this to death in a few threads.
Hollywood has thrived on the dark, threatening image of vampires ever since "Nosferatu" in 1922.
He was pointing out that Anne Rice was actually one of the first successful authors to pull the vampire out of that sterotype and stop perpetuating the mythos that it is a solely evil creature.
Hey she isnt writing about vampires anymore? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! this makes me angry, ohhh well will she be writing about any other supernatural things?
