The word implies a male witch or demon. It means "oath breaker". Technically, I like this term..but it's forged in prejudice. 'Wicca' is a better term to imply a male witch, and 'wicce' is better to imply a female one. Like I said though, I like warlock better overall.

I should add, if it wasn't apparent, that the word warlock is often used to denote not just a male witch, but one involved in the Left Hand Path.

She is right, these days the word usually implies a female. Though the terms anglo-saxon root 'wic' means to 'bend or shape energy' I believe. Thus the word seems to orignally describe someone who can do this at will.

I'm sorry I so all over the place with this..haven't had my coffee yet. :) I should say that there are two other widely accepted possible roots of the word, and still more which are like likely. I'll also correct my self in saying that the root I spoke of includes energy, it does strictly mean by itself to 'bend or fold'. I apologize once more for the randomness.

It was witch for the female term and warlock the male term.Considering that in the past witches were seen as evil. But later it was usued wizard for the male terms.

Warlock is a male evil witch, but nowadays witch is used for both gender terms.

As far as I know Warlocks have always refered to the male witch no matter what path they were on. In the beginning times or the burning times witches were primarily female and I think when males started getting into witchcraft they didn't like being called a word that mainly refered to females.

a warlock was used to name a witch who had been cast out of the coven for breaking the rules, an exsiled witch...its not a good term to use and its rather annoying when people assume its a male witch..no! a male witch is just that...a witch.

In the days of old, a warlock was a derogatory term for a male practitioner of magic. Nowadays, the actual meaning of the term has oft been forgotten and some people continue to differentiate between a female and male practitioner by using the term warlock for male and witch for female. However, those who are practitioners generally prefer the term witch used for both sexes as the term warlock has negative connotations.

I thought that warlockes were supposed to be sort of demonic. I'll go check it up later. I've read that both men and women can be witches, it was in The Devil Rides Out by Dennis Wheatly. Real dark stuff. He's cool =] I've got some of his books on witchcraft and stuff, so I'll have a look tonight.

A small addition to whats already been said, found on wikipedia ;)

The normal etymology derives warlock from the Old English wærloga meaning deceiver, or "oathbreaker". However, one source suggests that the word may come from the Old Norse varð-lokkur, "caller of spirits". Varðlokkur is also translated by some as 'ward-locks' or 'protections', and is an invocation chant used in spæ (scrying).

A highly speculative etymology interprets 'wærloga' as 'the man of the logs' alluding to the small pieces of wood the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian priests and wise men used to divine by means of the runes. This etymology seems to have been created to support neopagan beliefs about the past, inasmuch as warlock then appears to be a slang word of Christian coinage pejoratively used for those who remained Pagan and practising the art of the runes. However, its dependence upon sarcastic Christians referring to small pieces of wood as 'logs' makes it extremely unlikely, especially since the etymological roots of 'log' are believed to refer to felled trees or equally massive objects.

it was always my view (from the things that i've read) that calling some one a "warlock" was an offensive thing b/c it means (as people have said before me here) "oath breaker", and that a male witch was simply that.

it's up to the individual i guess :)

The term warlock is only generally used by satanic males nowadays, Wiccans do not use the term and is it as deragatory. I kinda like the sound of the word warlock so do use it from time to time myself.

Not only is a warlock an oath breaker ( which is never a good thing) but has been known to hunt witches. This labeling the two as M/F is from people that have no idea of what the terms really mean. A witch by any other name is just that - a witch.

"Warlock" has about as much sense as "Wizard." In STORIES they were used to describe male witches- in REALITY, a witch is a witch, whether you wear the pants or not.

"Warlock" is derogatory to Wiccans (and possibly others, but I can only speak for myself,) because it DOES mean "one who twists the truth," and that is something that goes against our principles.

As said earlier warlocks are oath breakers...most male witches prefer not to be called one ( pagan and wiccan paths) I myself am pagan/wiccan and my male friends find it an insult to be called a warlock. Most pagans/wiccans believe themselves to be honest, loyal and prefer not to hurt anyone. Don't get me wrong...we do enjoy occational pain depending on the situation but it is willing.

A witch is a always a witch, even by any other name.

There is no gender specification for the term 'witch'.

A Worlock is an enemy of witches.
