According to a popular story, English researcher Frederick A. Mitchell-Hedges found the Skull of Doom among Maya ruins in Lubaantun (now Belize) in 1927.
The Skull of Doom was subjected to various analyses. It is incredible that the item made of fused silica with the hardness seven of the Mohs scale (the scale of mineral hardness from zero to ten) was worked without hard cutting rubies or diamonds. Hewlett-Packard studied the skull in the 1970s and stated that it must have taken 300 years for numerous generations to rub a block of rock crystal down with sand until the perfect Skull emerged. Was it possible that Maya planned this work that could be completed just in three centuries? One thing is for sure is that the Skull of Doom is not unique. Several items of the same type and made of materials similar to quartz were discovered in different parts of the planet. A whole skeleton of a smaller caliber than the human one made of jade was discovered in the area of China and Mongolia. According to various estimates, the skeleton belonged to 3500-2200 B.C.

Dose this skull actually belong to a Maya,
do you belave it holds powers?
Or do you think its a hoax or a fluk of nature....Rocks have been known to form strange shapes in crystals like crosses The faery cross is one and the lions tounge...I personally thing it is possable that the skull is not human but rather a fluke of nature...

It would have been nice for you to include the reference that you did all the c/p from. But I will answer in the same matter:

"The evidence collected by Joe Nickell proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Mitchell-Hedges bought the skull at a Sotheby's sale in 1943 for £400.
The age of the object, as well as the other claims made about its making and history, were fabricated by Mitchell-Hughes. The man who owned the piece, Sidney Burney, and those who were on the Lubannatun expedition, denied that Mitchell-Hedges found the skull. Mitchell-Hedges himself never mentioned the skull until just after he bought it in 1943."

But being the nice guy that I am, I will include a real story, first hand, about my experience with "Max" The Crystal skull.

"Max" was given to JoAnn and Carl Parks by a Tibetan red hat lama named Norbu Chen. The crystal skull was gifted to him by the Guatemalan shamans in Central America.

JoAnn Parks is still Max's caretaker and lives in Houston Texas. She does do traveling with Max at times. It was in Chappaqua N.Y. that I had the pleasure of meeting them both. About four years ago on a saturday night I met JoAnn, and about 20 other people who also made the trip. After the intros, we all gather in a large circle with "Max" sitted on a light table in the center of us. We all heard the story about his past and how they meet each other. Later, we all had our turns of sitting with him for about 2 minutes each but no taking him off the table. When my turn came, I took a quick look see and then I placed my forehead on his. I relaxed and let whatever happen, happen. Shit and unexpected things always happen to me (like winning unexpected awards) so, I never freakout when they do happen. But I swear, all of a sudden, Max turns the brightest golden color you could imagine. I blinked and looked again. Yep. Still golden. I smile and backed away. He was "clear" again and nobody else seems to have seen the color change. I keep silent. Tomorrow I have a "private viewing" with Max. It will wait. The rest of the night goes by. Some people here have seen Max before, some have not. But Max is one crystal skull that is 110% unique. And I will tell you more, later, if you like. ~ Billy

I don't mean to be facetious, as this is indeed a very intersting thread, such skulls puported to possess mysterious powers, such as revealing the future, etcetera, but guess what? We have one in Shoreditch...

The fact is that the skull is there... whether it was hand made or crafted by nature.... Personally I would be more worried if it was made by nature..... That alone should show that nature itself has a consious and people need to quit fucking with her...

Throught the ages maya, aztecs and other comunity have been known to create such things in order to enlight themselves into spiritual quest, so I guess a handmade one would be possible and probable, as for the part of the time frame it took to make it that is one big mystery since the science itself is never sure of the time frame. So I guess the bottom truth might never come out, even with allt he articles of the world since the only ones who knows are the makers, at least we get to see another wonder around and learn mroe about the capabilities of our kind.
For the power part...I must say i am really hard on that since I beleive only what I can feel for real, sadly I will never get my hands on these, I am to affraid fo the plane, trains and boat so I wont be able to get in touch and feel it for myself.I beleive i many thins as long as I can fel them.

Sorry but I didn't have my camera. Most pagans, including myself don't take pics of all the special experiences we have. Better to keep things in memory. I did buy a brochure that JoAnn made and asked her to sign it. But if you wish to c/p my journal story, you are more than welcome to. ~ Billy

Skulls are one of our foremost symbol of death, and a powerful icon in the cultures all over the globe.

Thirteen crystal skulls of apparently ancient origin have been found in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America, comprising one of the most fascinating subjects of 20th Century archaeology.

These skulls, found near the ancient ruins of Mayan and Aztec civilizations (with some evidence linking the skulls with past civilization in Peru) are a mystery as profound as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Nazca Lines of Peru, or Stonehenge.

Some of the skulls are believed to be between 5,000 and 36,000 years old.

Many indigenous people speak of their remarkable magical and healing properties, but nobody really knows where they came from or what they were used for.

Were they left behind after the destruction of a previous world, such as Atlantis? Are they simply ingenious modern fakes or can they really enable us to see deeply into the past and predict the future?

Much research is currently being done on the skulls. However, their origin is still a baffling mystery. They seem to defy logic. Everything that is known about lapidary work indicates that the skulls should have been shattered fractured, or fallen apart when carved.

Very interesting story, Billy.

Here is a page that talks about how Jo Ann got the skull and here experiences with it. http://www.v-j-enterprises.com/maxcs.html.

I found another article about crystal skulls and they talk about the Mitchell-Hudges skull. The interesting thing about the skull was when Hewlett-Packard examined the skull they found that the skull had been carved against the natural axis of the crystal. It also says that modern crystal sculptors always take into account the axis or orientation of the crystal's molecular symmetry, because if they carve against the grain, the piece is bound to shatter. Here is the link to the page. http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_6_1.htm

As far a the crystal skulls having power I don't know. I have never had much experience with crystals having power. I know there are a lot of people that do believe they have power. I was brought up in a very strict christian home where things like that were not believed. I have started questioning things in the last few years. Right now I believe the crystal skulls might have power but I am not sure.

I think it is possible to be a fluke, but at the same time possible to be real.
The kind of crystal it is can indeed hold vast amounts of info which could seal our fates.
And, if you look at artwork of those peoples and other myths surrounding them, they seemed advanced enough for their time without the mystery of the skulls.
Only time can tell.

In theroy(billy correct my spelling please lol) And It's only a thought not proven but some sicentists beleave that Rocks record history threw water each time a drop falls it collects energy and It is absorbed by Quarts crystals. When the lakes dryed up the water stoped. Some Paranormal investagators say hauntings are on the same line if your house is built over a lake bed or has an underwater stream some how the rocks are playing back what was recorded and every time a drop falls its recording you.So Max and the rest of his buddies Have recorded History? Then if the thought was then proven to be fact how could we replay what was written?

I just want to know where people are getting all these skulls at. I've never been walking around in a mall and wandered into a sale "50% off on giant human skulls! Jade, quartz, granite!" They are really hard to find. I've seen plastic, glass, wood, that sort of thing, but nothing like the ones everyone here is talking about. I'd have less trouble getting hold of a real human skull.

I think it may very well be a fluke of nature. Nature has been known for producing many mysterious things especially in rock formations etc.

While nature has been known to produce many interesting forms, it's near impossible that it would not only produce the shape of a human skull but also the correct size.

I'm unsure how these crystal skulls are being dated. You can date the time a natural crystal would take to grow to that size but there would be no way to date the process wherein it was carve, ground or cut into a shape. Things like carbon dating have to be applied to something with a radiological decay and would still only give the age of the rock itself and not the creation of the artwork.

I will say that by looking at the rest of the artwork of a particular culture, like the Inca work found throughout Peru or even the work of possible older cultures at Machu Picchu (where I've recently read may predate the Incas as 15,000 BC), there is no relative example of that kind of asthetic. So why would ancient civilizations carve depictions that were skilled but not entirely realistic or create 2 dimensional images and then on one single type of work (the skull) create the most exacting and realistic depiction possible. It defies artistic culture more than it defies possibility.

True but when you look at the cultures and the arts that have been discovered, and when you look at even the possibility that earlier cultures may have been advanced enough to have been the teachers of these early civilizations, we still don't see any artwork or sculpture that would stand alongside a perfect replica skull. It would be like finding seven copies of a DVD in 17th century Europe.

It does perhaps point to the theory that a far older civilization that was technologically advanced may have existed 15000 years ago - prior to the Incas, Maya, Olmec and Aztec...and that an item like these skulls were handed down through civilizations long past their creation (like the Giant Olmec Heads).
