Whenever people think of vampires and witches they tend to tie us to black and red. why is that. Yeah we like to wear that but so what. Now everyone who wears black and red are normally thought to be gothic or to be into occult things. but that is not always the case.

So here is the question why do people associate black and red to us?

This is a question more of color meaning I think. Every color has a meaning to our subconscious. Certain ones have diffferent meanings when put together.

Witches were always shown in old theatres in black, so the audience understood what they were watching was supposed to be evil without having to be told.

It probably stems from that somehow

Blood is red.

Darkness, is, by all accounts, generally black.

Seems fairly obvious, to me.

Black has always been used to represent something dark or evil. Even old cowboy westerns would show the villian in a black hat, compared to the hero who would wear a white hat. Blood is represented by the color red.

It's really not just black and red, it's all dark colors. Whether we realize it or not, whenever you look at a certain color your mind links it with a corresponding emotion or mental image. Why people connect us with dark colors (especially black and red) is the same reason why the mojority of us are drawn to these colors - they represent the darker and more mysterious things around us.

"When a woman wears red, she means buisness..." Nikolai from "Six Feet Under"

Red is a power color. It shows a strengt, a daring if you will.

I agree with the previous black statements.. representing darkness or even evil.. But I think the red association is also the strenth or daring that vampires posess.

I think Neonate has hit the nail on the head. They're power colors. Black is not just a symbol of power but of the power of evil, or in a more moderate sense the unknown. Red is life, energy, will, courage. And its the same for many other dark colors that are associated with vampires, deep purples and blues were royalty colors or energy power colors.

Black isn't just dark, death, night. Black is the absense of light, just like white it is a blank canvas. Black is what we see when we can't see anything yet everything at the same type. Black is mysery, rebellion, artistic influence.
Red, fire, blood, sex. All symbols for life. Anger and love, our two strongest emotions, both represnted by red. Look at the presence of red throughout history, war, religion. Look at the human body. Red is a strong color.

On the other hand I wonder, why do I see such a lot of awefully overcoloured profiles then? If it is for individuallitys sake only, well, the bigger is not always the better.

I'd even prefer a strict monochrom, text only layout, but that may only be my taste.

Don't forget the white letters.
This makes it tricolored and so I see another meaning here (wether the creator saw it too or not is not my knowing).

The morning, the full day and the night,
fresh spring, fertile summer and calming winter,
the virgin, the mother and the crone.
I learned this as old celtic principles of the wheel or circle of the day, year and life itself.

A, and the old german Empire (1871-1918) also tooked this colours for its flag. Interesting, isn't it?

Aside from the previous answers.

Red is a disorienting colour, in the dark it looks dark and is easily confused with black and in the light it looks bright and signifies energy. Perhaps this deceptive quality has some affect on why it is so often chosen. It is also a "go" colour; a colour that encites us to act.

Black is a colour of empowerment, it both encourages us to focus our thoughts and opens our mind to percieve mysteries.
