I have always been fascinated by the mystery of stonehenge.
What was it's function? Why is it there? Why have the druids adopted it? How exactly was it made and by whom?
It is well known that the stones that make up stonehenge are made from a type of rock only found in the mountains of south wales (almost 180 miles west of stonehenge), so how did they get these huge rocks to the site?
It is also known that these rocks (acccording to basic engineering rules and from tests that have been done by architects) would have a foundation that is a deep as the rocks are standing out of the ground, which means that the rocks are actually twice the size you can see.
I am not too sure what to believe about this famous site, and nor do i listen to many of the theories that have come up over the last 20 years.
But, it is still a fascination of mine and I will eventually work it out in my own mind.
What do you all think?
M
I think that the explaination is that we aren't supposed to know. Seriously, how did those people get the stones there? I have read so many different theories on this and I still don't understand it.
Actually, scientists have actually pretty much solved how the stones were transported. There is evidnce of hundreds of people residing around stonehenge (they have found the foundations of homes and graves). As for moving the stones the have also found animal carcasses (meaning these could have aided in pulling them) and it is also believed they may have been moved by using logs to roll them. (Meaing they put the logs beneath and basically used them as wheels).
As for what they were for. I believe there could be many reasons. The main one is for relihgous purposes. To pay respect to their dieties.
Ahh the roll them on wooden rollers idea, isn't that what the ancient egyptians did?
Could our countrymen (who were then at least 150 years behind the egyptians technology) have used the exact same method? Or do you think that maybe the stones were actually designed by english and yet built by the egyptians?
On that, I wouldn't really be sure. There is evidence of a few different cultures in the shape and design of stonehenge. Whether many different people worked on it or simply one culture picked up on designs of somebody elses. We may never know.
masons put them up.....and they probably had many slaves put them together.. imagine the weight ....and the mystery
I read once that there were 2 Stonehenges...The second ones evidence of ever being there now isn't visible... The outer ring of holes seems to have been used for cremation burials during the second building phase of Stonehenge.
I find it hard to believe they'd of dragged stones which weighed about four tons, each measuring around 2 m in height, between 1 m and 1.5 m wide and around 0.8 m thick, on dead animal carcasses :)
Stonehenge is a time keeper. It is a calendar of sorts. Scientists have reconstructed what stonehenge's form and function was like at the time it was first completed. In certain cycles of the year, the sun appears in a certain position on stonehenge. If i remember this correctly, the moon does the same thing as she passes through her cycles throughout the year.
basically, it serves as a holy place for the druids and specific rituals on the standard pagan wheel of the year would take place at stonehenge when the sun hit a particular window of the formation.
I think the reference to the animals was to show that when alive the animals might have pulled the stones.
My thoughts are that the stones were placed to be an indicator of time that was used for rituals. Looking at old ways and cultures, there was much worship of nature as deities. So to have this set up would help them keep track of time, similar to a sundial. Add that they probably viewed it as a holy place and you are left with what some consider a mystery because our ways are very different in this era.
yeah there was another stone henge type monument found in scotland in the mid 80's i watched a documentory about it and other stone henge like structures around the uk, they are all connected by leylines too quite interesting it was.
Darn I forgot to add, there are remnants of several stone circles in the area. While I have not been there to view them, Stonehenge is merely just the one that is still fully intact.
From what I have been told there are others that are more "impressive" than Stonehenge, but do not have the fame of this particular stone circle.
Also since Jenova mentioned the Druids, it is thought that is why there are so many of these circles as they assisted the communities with time and worship. I suppose they could be considered a multi purpose day planner and worship centre. I guess multi tasking is an age-old idea.
Yes, there is another circle, made up of about 56 holes just inside the original circle of Stonehenge, were they were supposed to of done cremations, it was still used for druid rituals etc (under supervision) until the stones started leaning from all the tourists jumping all over them...
Jumping on stones eh?
That would have been the year that they tried to close stonehenge to the public and the druids went mad.
Lilith, i have found that many of the ancient monuments have been constructed on ley lines, and that (to me) is not all that mysterious as ley lines spread all over the globe in a veretable spider web.
M
obviously i am not allowed to post my questions or opinions here as they are put in by menerfecious since i am obviously too STUPID to do so myself THANK you menerfecious
I didn't think he was stating that, however I do disagree with what he said.
I think it is amazing that these people were far more in touch with the world around them to know where the lines were. If you were to ask 100 people today to find them less than 5 would even be close.
And those that could, some of them would be using pseudo science to find them. It's interesting that looking back; we assume that they had many of the gadgets that even 50 years ago did not exist. Youth and its folly.
i didn't say it was mysterious i said the documentry was interesting menerfecious.
liebe, yes i agree with you there the leylines were used as sor of a way to transfer energies from one place to another (in my opinion) to help with the rituals of the time (most of witch are lost to us now)
aliens, all the alien's doings. same with the pyramids that you were talking about too. long ago the aliens made a trade with the humans that if they taught the humans how to do things that the humans would give up sacrifices for them. that's why there's so many abductions we hear about.
The first henge in the area was made of wooden posts. The stonehenge visitors see today is the final phase where the outer ring of stones was added. There is over 2500 years seperating the ceation of the original wooden form to the current form
excuse me... 700 years seperating the constructions. I hit the post button too fast.
I heard that Stonhenge is/was a faery ring.
I have visited Stonehenge. The energy has been drained from the place throught the years. I hardly noticed it had any energy at all.
Stonehenge has astrological pourposes. It is like a big calander, I think.
In my personal opinion, it was a portal to the other realms. Nowdays the portal does not have enough energy so it is closed.
i don't believe the faery theory personally but then i won't agree with alot of things land say when i don't lol no offence but i really can't see how faery's and stone henge could actually be connected????? sorry.
I am not so sure about that idea...a portal maybe, but if it really was a portal, are they not self sufficient. I mean after all stonehenge is built on a major intersection of 5 ley lines which (interestingly enough) branch out in such a way as to form a pentagram where the circle is.
M
There are many theories on this. One is that aliens did it. I choose to think that it was made with "magic". But just like many other things, like the great pyramids, the people that know the truth are the ones that where there when it was made. So we may never really know.
Stonehenge is older than the stones, there is a wood henge under it just like the water henge …. Lay lines cross this point and it is one vast vortex … the ideas of star calendars was nice till you wind the clock back and notice it doesn’t line up to the stars when it was made only now does it come close.
I made a discovery myself, I used to arrange gatherings for raves, we were doing a winter solstice rave, myself and 2 lovely witches sat in a special mound/grave that the winter sun as it rises slowly fills this sacred place and it is very soul filling as the light touches you … well to cut a long story short the smoke from the fire inside the chamber was thick from moss on the logs but we were lying down on some blankets anyway the tribal trance music was beating it’s hypnotic magic and the crowds were loving the celebration and we noticed the beats and sounds were making the smoke into patterns just like the ones on the cave side walls … we had a cosmic moment then .. they must have been doing the same and carved it into the stones not knowing sound waves then ….
Still same for Stonehenge just a lay line gathering point
The last known usage of Stonehenge was during the Iron Age (if not as late as the 7th century), where Roman coins, prehistoric pottery, an unusual bone point and a skeleton of a young male (780-410 cal BC) were found, we have no idea if Stonehenge was in continuous use or exactly how it was used. The burial of a decapitated Saxon man has also been excavated from Stonehenge, dated to the 7th century. (wikipedia)
Could of been some kind of human sacrifice rituals? lol
Oh & as I posted earlier that the stones had been moved by tourists and such;
By the beginning of the 20th century a number of the stones had fallen or were leaning precariously, probably due to the increase in curious visitors clambering on them during the nineteenth century. Three phases of conservation work were undertaken which righted some unstable or fallen stones and carefully replaced them in their original positions using information from antiquarian drawings - Wikipedia
My theory on Stonehenge is that those who built it were much more technologically advanced and socially complex than we give them credit for - it's just that no literature of their time has survived
The body’s buried there were done to pagans and criminals as a punishment they thought, to be buried on un hallow ground your soul was dammed.
Lav, if criminals etc being buried there was some kind of punishment
I think they'd of found a heck of alot more bones, dont you?
Considering there was only a skull & 1 body found
Flower im part of a group that goes there five times a year not every criminal was buried there lol
That isn't answering my question...
I have been there a few times myself when I was younger
I myself have been there quite a few times over the years (although not in the last 10) as i lived very close to it (kent).
I have to say that in that time and after speaking to many people who work there, I have never ever heard anything about criminals being buried there.
I am with Rose on this one.
I've never heard that theory either, like I said if it was a punishment to criminals, you'd of thought you'd of found thousands of bodies there...Considering how old it is
Ah well history is a fantastic thing especially when it’s noted in the natural history museum, 3 skeletons have been found lately and are shown to come from public executions which was common in anglo saxon times were it is estimated 3 persent of males were hung or minus there heads.
And no not all were buried there and yes lots have been found and moved as recorded by Romans looking for treasure as they didn’t know what it was …
I guess we need to agree to disagree on this as im just quoting historical fact and your quoting wikipedia lol
As for being in kent I love it there living in London we had many a party on the Russian submarine we book it out for vamp party’s and so forth, my main attention is the gathering in London secret chiefs .. ever hear of us?
Quoting a historical fact, lmao...Do you think I only researched wikipedia? I also researched the official StoneHenge website & there was nothing of that there
Yep we'll agree do disagree...
No i haven't heard them before. I do not live in kent anymore, but i do visit. I plan to visit stonehenge when i get married.
I know someone who works in the natural history museum cataloguing everything that comes and goes....I think i might do a little inside research without the use of the internet. The internet (i am afraid to say) does have a lot of faults as information can only be updated as and when the time is available. I am sure everyone would agree that an INSIDE SOURCE would be a better bet.
M
LMAO lavis i have just been on the natural history museum site and there is nothing ther AT ALL about burials at stone henge llf if you still believe this to be true try looking.......
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/contact-enquiries/press-office/press-releases/2005/press_release_5438.html
all it says is alot of stuff about the footsteps of Darwin and some flower garden LLF
that link again........
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/contact-enquiries/press-office/press-releases/2005/press_release_5438.html
pmsl
on another search (more indepth) there were remains found but 1 skull and some bones lol still not enough to support your burial theory
I have done a thorough search of the internet and even the National History Museum and Natural History Museaum archive indexes, and the only remains found there are one set of human remains and a few rock samples.
However one of the rock samples taken has interested me as it is believed (according to alchemical works and my own reaserch into geomancy) to have magickal properties.
Well it was a while ago so I just googled for you lol
You must be the wonderful soon to be wife I take it?
History link link to a random page on history of England.
It says “quote” By David Keys 14 July 2000
Stonehenge was used as a public execution ground by the Anglo-Saxons, archaeologists have said. Radio carbon dating carried out by Oxford University and English Heritage on a victim from the prehistoric site shows that the execution took place in the 7th or 8th century. The discovery follows the announcement last month that the skeleton, thought to have been lost, had been found in the Natural History Museum. Three other skeletons have been found at Stonehenge over the years, two of which may also now turn out to be execution victims. Public execution was common in Anglo Saxon times. Recent analysis suggests up to 3 per cent of males ended their lives hanging from a rope or minus their heads. About 20 Anglo-Saxon execution grounds have been excavated and hundreds of skeletons of executed Anglo- Saxon criminals have been studied. Archaeological and historical evidence shows most criminals were hanged or beheaded. Slaves were often stoned to death, while executed witches tended to be buried face down to prevent their ghosts re-emerging into the world of the living. The Stonehenge decapitation victim was in his thirties. A study of the fourth neck vertebra indicates that a blow was delivered from behind with a sharp instrument, almost certainly a sword. The victim was probably kneeling at the time. It is not known whether he was of peasant or upper-class origin or what his crime is likely to have been
"Three other skeletons have been found at Stonehenge over the years, two of which "may" also now turn out to be execution victims"
Does that say "may" or does it say it is for certain?
Also it doesnt state anywhere in that passage that the bodies were buried there, were Pagans as a punishment on unhallowed ground...
And this doesn't say it happened at StoneHenge...It just said 3 bodies have been found there
execution was common in Anglo Saxon times.
It does indeed say may and not definately....there is no solid proof that these skeletons are indeed part of the original excavation. I mean...stonehenge has been excavated many times (much to the annoyance of the druids) and yet they only found these remains in 2000?
I still am somewhat unsure of it. I found nothing in the archives.
If you read it, it doesn't say that thousands of bones of the executed are in StoneHenge, it says that they have found OTHER sites were thousands of bodies were found of executed criminals
So were back to were I said earlier, if it was supposed to be an execution ground you'd of found thousands of bodies there, not just 3.
No one will really ever know the bottom line of it, unless you get a time machine, its gonna a remain as a mystery as the pyramids are, and the pyramids are still, I guess if we found hwo they did one we can find who they did the other. Still I think it was done the similar way, by looking at them both they have alot of similar things, the size of the stone themself, the fact they come from another place then where they are all place. I think these are alot similare.
This is gonna sound silly to most people but perhaps a stupid theory. Some scientists says a long time ago that the history of man is a great mystery. No one really knows what stonehenge was ment for. Some people believed that sorcery was conducted there, some people say that it was used as a calendar to keep track of time. And to other say it could be used as a UFO landing site. I've been hearing some stories about the pyrimids that it was impossible to move stones with slaves. That maybe possible been built by aliens. Dont know if thats true or not, but I agree that the Egyptians would have no such technology based on how to build the pyrimids in the first place. The question is how did they first came up with the idea of the pyrimid? As for stonehenge now thats a mystery, I think generaly it was used to tell time with, like the sundial.
Lonewolf you have hit the nail on the head there and given me some inspiration for another topic.
M
I to have always wondered upon Stonehenge but knowing why it's there seems almost impossible but I can wait
I agree with you're post wholeheartedly Lone, I do love the subject of how the Egyptians managed to build pyramids & also read up that the stones couldn't be carried by slaves & that too, was advanced for that period.
I like the theory of aliens :)
To make everything more interesting is that the Japanese underwater empire in ancient times, the temple in Thailand, the pyrimids and sphinx in Egypt and the pyrimid in Mexico all are dated back way in 15,000 years ago. And each of them are all based on they star constillation charts. How weird is that? And another thing abou Egypt is that even back in that time Egypt wasnt all desert but mainly jungle. Scientist has found water erotions on the pyrimids and the sphinx. Egypt never gets any rain anymore. but only indicated that the only time it did rain was that when Egypt was pure and green then. Does this raises more questions to any other people that history is more than meets the eye. I would like to know what did happend back 15,000 years ago?
i have read and see doc's on the theory that the primids and stonehenge are based on the stars, another one that pops up are the statues on fraser island they are so hugh and so real like. deffently makes u wonder how ppl in those time without the equipment and knowledge we have could do something like this that has us so intreged
Has anyone heard the theory that it was made by aliens? I read somewhere once that Stonehenge, as well as numerous other stone formations are used to map out something..and they were stratigically placed by some outer-space being...
It sounds stupid saying it...but it could be an explanation i suppose..
Morganx
yes i heard that theory and it sounds like something that is a least feasable as the things done and the way it was placed and build is awesome and beyound belief
Nice thread, I wish it had been started earlier though because I was at Stonehenge last Wednesday and could have found it all for you.
I don't know from the original post about the stones being much bigger than they are because of their foundations ... some of the stones rock, I didn't know they had foundations.
I think the transporting of the stone is pretty much done to death. My own personal theory was that there were two pockets of that stone, one in Wales and one in Wiltshire - the one in Wiltshire doesn't exist anymore because they dug it all up to make the henge! No historical fact behind that one btw, just my theory.
Am I the only one to find it amazing that there aren't more skeletons and things ? Lets face it millions of people and animals died all over the place over a few thousand years - you would think there would be more, but there aren't. It does seem that the site was kept 'clean'
There aren't going to be any finds in the area surrounding the henge - anyone who goes to the henge will know there are huge roads very close to it and all around it.
Ley lines: Any connection between two points will be a straight line - I think leylines are all to do with energy. Did the stones mark a leyline or did they create it?
it must of been awesome being there. i think ur theory sounds good would explain how they transport the stone as being closer. i would love to visit the Stonehenge or go to eygpt to see these inspiring creations
I agree with Jenova from what I have read and seen in documentaries one of the purposes for stone henge was as a form of calendar. The stones sit in exact alignments to starts and the rise of the sun and moon. It was set as a type of calendar but I also believe it was used for many other rituals and purposes.
if the stones were transported by animals, then how can we explain the other theory that the stones are twice their size?
anyway, jenovah's explanation is very good and i learned from it..
up in the lake district there is a small henge that was rumoured to be a witch and her daughters they were turned to stone as they tried to cast in a circle.. legend goes if you can go round the circle counting the stones and come to the same amount twice then the spell wud be broken .. i tried 6 times and its real odd even if you make your little sis stand on the first stone you count as a marker you never get the same number twice..
maybe have you ever thought that the stonhedge is just that..stone...and nthing more?
mcrgurl16
Its true they are stones, but they were moved and constructed for a purpose and that's the mystery.
A lot of occult and paranormal importance is now placed on the stones, its still regularly used by druids officially and 'others' (unofficially depending on the state of the fence)
Morgan Rose, yes.. I had heard something similiar as we have the same shaped stones in the north of Ireland, except what local folk lore says that these stones were guiding stones for alien spaceships. Maybe the leprechauns had a wee bit too much ;)
I am also facinated by the mystery that is stonehenge, and as much as my curiosity might nag at me I have not tried to come up with a theory as to how the got there or why they were put there in the first place for one reason. If you solve all of lifes mysteries than what do you have left? I adore the stonehenge ruins and I love studying them and their history but I have no desire to solve that particular mystery.
Artekma (if that's spelt right) thankyou for your comments.
If i had thought of it sooner i would have certainly posted this thread much sooner.
M
I read alot of historical romance novels and the way stonehenge was explained as far as moving it to where it is, is that they used long tree logs and rolled the stones that way. lol i don't know if that was fact or fiction. i would think that it would be too much trouble to move it that far when they could have set it up right where it was.
I think they may have gone to a lot of trouble to pick the site.....it is one of the few sites available in that region with the significant importance it seems to have.
another life hmm do you know of about how long ago in time?
this doesnt really help explaine stone henge very much but its quite entertaining and related to this topic. and can show it can be done.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRRDzFROMx0
i apploigize if anyone posted this allready, i hadn't the time to check.
Hmmm...it doesnt seem that Stonehenge doesn't have much prove or explaination of its history. Just another mystery I guess. I do find that Egypt has much more mysterious stories than anything else.
Lonewolf I do have to agree with you there, egypt does indeed have many many more secrets and mysteries to unravel.
M
Stonehenge is something that fascinates me. Since I read about the Arthurian legend it has stuck in my head as a wonder. In the legend Merlin transported them. Maybe this is how it was done, but we'll never know for sure.
I'm not really sure of the timeline but King arthur was thought to be around in the 5th century and I think Stonehenge was built (in several stages)) starting about 2800 BC
I'm fairly sure it would have been up and standing long before Arthur (and Merlin) got in on the act
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/01/070130-stonehenge.html
I read this a little while back. Take a look. It seems they found the village that supported Stone Henge and the construction of it. Take a glance, pretty neat information
I have just read that a american astronomer namedGerald Hawkins made a theory and published a book called "Stonehenge Decoded" which was published in 1965. He stated that every stone was place to provide sightlines for the rising and setting of the sun on key dates. And that Stone henge was nothing less then a prehistoric obsevatory. It doesnt matter how u look at these strange builds or where they r they all seem to point to the stars. Does this mean we had visitors from outer space which made these ppl build these monuments or did they just have this fasination with the stars...I just love these mysteries.
I think that the mysteries of Stonehenge are simply that, a mystery. That said, I believe it is a testament to the pagan faith of those who created it.
It is well known that many of the ancient civilisations had a deep fascination with the starts....they didn't know or understand what they were, but they still were fascinated with them.....I feel that their fascination is as deep as our fascination with the universe and planets that surround ours.
M
totally agree. since the dawn of time man has always had this fasination and guess it always will
I, for one am not so sure about it.....i think that it is best left unsolved as to it's purpose as it will no longer be looked upon the same way if its secrets become unravelled......=)
Well Stonehenge has pretty much been solved or figured out at least in the basics. There are other similar sites around the world many being dated to before the known cultures that have come up around them. So it does raise the question as to who built them. I like the idea that humans built them and not aliens or other god like creatures. I think we don’t give ourselves enough credit or simple enjoy buy books that focus on fantasy and not the idea that we may have been on this rock a lot longer than we have any archeological evidence to prove so.
There is a stone circle in iraq around the area of ancient sumeria that was built who knows when....scientists are completely baffled by it and every time they try to carbon date it they are stumped.
The rocks are made from an unknowm material (but obviously some kind of ore because they are rocks with some kind of metallic substance inside).
Could this actually be proof of an alien race.....the sumerians certainly thought so in their tales of the annunaki (the ancient sumer gods)
sorry seen the water henge lol
im sure this will be edited
Edit: nope, too funny. :D ~ billy
druidic culture was passed down by word of mouth not written down... it was thought that you would receive more from the story hearing in in the words of the person telling it not the one it happened to... in this instance if stone henge is druidic in nature and it's purpose was anything to do with said druids... there would be no record of how it was built aside from stories still being passed down, the problem with that is when someone tells something that they have heard to someone else they put their own spin or colorization upon it... where as it may have started as *just as an example* it took 100 people working diligently all day under the sun 8 years to move each stone* after all is said and done 300 years later the story could be *one wizard per stone as they telekenetically moved them into their resting places*...
Its one of many ancient mysterys.
I find Easter island statues very interesting as well.
Yes the Easter island statues intrigue me as well, but I'm drawn to Stonehenge. Anne Rice had an interesting story about it's creation in her book "Taltos".
Not to change the topic but the Easter island statues have been determined to have been built by the island inhabitants and grew larger in size do to the competition between tribal leaders wanting to have the biggest and best statues. This has been reported a lot in anthropological studies of the island and its original culture there.
They basically over populated themselves and destroyed or used more resources than they had being returned by their environment and then plague and famine wiped them out. Like stone hedge the statues where built by humans for human purposes and goals.
Aaahhh, but what will someone different determine in a few years?
Indeed PhoenixHeart who know's what other bright ideas might come up ....A secret place for mass orgies ,Or just a simple place to hang-out and get drunk and dance ....
But i am sure they were for some purpose sometimes i think people but to much work into it and forget simple reason's and explaination's .....
There are a lot of really interesting theories here. Everything from Aliens to fairies to time portals.
I really don't have anything new to add but I did want to say that I like the Alien idea the best.
Perhaps Ceremonial use of some sort- executions, human sacrifice, deflowering of virgins, anything is possible
The great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world. What visitors see today are the substantial remnants of the last in a sequence of such monuments erected between c. 3000 BC and 1600 BC. Each monument was a circular structure, aligned with the rising of the sun at the solstice.
There has always been intense debate over quite what purpose Stonehenge served. Certainly it was the focal point in a landscape filled with prehistoric ceremonial structures. It also represented an enormous investment of labour and time. A huge effort and great organisation was needed to carry the stones tens – and sometimes hundreds – of miles by land and water, and then to shape and raise them. Only a sophisticated society could have mustered so large a workforce, and the design and construction skills necessary to produce Stonehenge and its surrounding monuments.
Stonehenge’s orientation in relation to the rising and setting sun has always been one of its most remarkable features. Whether this was because its builders came from a sunworshipping culture or because – as some scholars have asserted – the circle and its banks were part of a huge astronomical calendar, remains a mystery.
What cannot be denied is the ingenuity of the builders of Stonehenge. With only very basic tools at their disposal, they shaped the stones and formed the mortises and tenons that linked uprights to lintels.
Using antlers and bones, they dug the pits to hold the stones and made the banks and ditches that enclosed them.
There are direct links with the people who built Stonehenge through their tools, artefacts, pottery and even the contents of their graves. Some of these are displayed in the museums at Salisbury and Devizes.
The first monument in the Stonehenge landscape consisted of a circular bank and ditch with a ring of 56 wooden posts, the pits for which are now known as Aubrey Holes. Later monuments all used and reused the great stones we see today, many of which were brought from some distance away. The final phase comprised the construction of an outer circle of huge standing stones – super-hard sarsens, from the Marlborough Downs. These were topped by lintels, forming a ring. Inside this stood a horseshoe of five still-larger constructions, known as trilithons: pairs of uprights with a lintel across each. All the stones were connected using mortise-and-tenon joints. Smaller bluestones, from the Preseli Mountains in South Wales, were arranged in a ring and a horseshoe, within the great circle and horseshoe of sarsen stones. In an earlier phase, these bluestones had been erected in a different arrangement.
Burial mounds, possibly containing the graves of ruling families, are also integral to the landscape. Neolithic long barrows and the various types of circular barrows which came later are still visible. So too are other earthworks and monuments. Some remain enigmatic, such as the long oval earthwork to the north, the Cursus – once thought to be a chariot racecourse. You can visit the Cursus and other parts of the Stonehenge landscape. Woodhenge, two miles to the north east, was a wooden ovalpost structure, also aligned with the Solstice sunrise. It is believed to be contemporary with the first phase of Stonehenge.
A World Heritage Site, Stonehenge and all its surroundings remain powerful witnesses to the once great civilisations of the Stone and Bronze Ages, between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago.
