Both may be used depending on the experience of the user. To some the words must be perfectly spoken and symbols must be perfectly copied in order to complete a spell. Most western traditional magick originated with the Order of the Golden Dawn, and their rituals had to be perfect according to the "book".
Some 21st ce practioners are not so rigid, many wytches and practioners of Chaos Magick work more loosely, allowing for more of the influence of the unconscious on the spell or incantation.

Great topic and one that could be argue both ways. Since people created the words and the symbols to communicate, we should conclude that they had meaning to their creators. Some of them deep and others very simple.

With out drawing this out too long, I believe that the words and symbols have meaning in and of themselves. It is however up to the individual and their faith/belief to activate them.

I believe in everyday life there are symbols that we can acknowledge, I can look at a bird who flys close to me and lands as a messenge is coming soon, a butterfly may land on my hand trandsformation could occur in my life. These are just some of the everyday symbols that have came to me, and I use them as someone would read the symbols on a deck of tarot.

ver nice feedback! i personally think words of power as well as symbols of power just act as a tool to give us the correct mind state and if it takes a word or a symbol to get us there..there's nothing wrong with that.

they do but not symbole of no meaning or relation or akwards, words in runes or anciant language yet do have power to enhance or focus the spells and curses. Some who are related to entities or powerfull being do have an impact. But if you just use jibberish then forget it it wont have any effect, just makes you look not very intelligent

i agree to a certian amount.most words and symbols of power do have a history behind them adding even more energy when one uses them that can set ones self in a alternate mind state. i also think it just depends on the person and the words or symbols used,to how the power will be derived.

yeah everything has an effect on matter one way or another on how the energy is to be disputed...
and there is a possibility that words and symbols can do that as well not to say that it's not just self psychology as to set ones mind and energy to a better or even higher level of focus.

Yes, words have power, especially names, that's why some witches have craft names that only close friends know. This is an old tradition that goes way back.

Symbols have power in that you can use glyphs to form a sigil to summon a familiar. These symbols form the name and tasks for that particular familiar. If you make the tasks to vague, then you have trouble getting it to do its tasks and releasing it when finished.

*sigh* Maximus took my sympol...the ankhe or ankha.

Personally, I love the egyptians and i do believe that like the aztec they found a power not known to us in modern day.

For instance, the aztecs AND egyptians believed that in december of the year 2012 ( i think im wrong on the year but i know i have the month right) the end of the world would come. Im eager to find out if this is true.

To an extent, all words and symbols may contain power. It depends largely upon the person's mind frame and what they wish that word or symbol to represent.

I work with sigils and symbols primarily with hand gestures being a secondary focus. I have my sigil which to me is a catch-all protection/ power boost sigil. It's mine and mine alone, so it has a very profound personal mental attachment for me.

All words and symbols of power to an extent depend upon the power the individual hands off to it. God is a great example. The reason the gods contain power is because of the amount of thought and invested energy people put into them. They exist the same way that a sigil or a word of power exists and carry the same functions.

I am careful, however, to not let my sigil become a crutch. It is not required in every circumstance and is not even able to be produced on the fly in every circumstance except for mentally through visualization.

Everyone uses words and symbols as a reference for a particular magical mindset they wish to enter. Some see no need for those, but instead focus their will in another way.

how does one use these so called symbols and words of power and do they use them to benefit themselves others or just the universe in general?

---
Excellent questions indeed and I will answer them, building off the foundation already started by Jenova.

The symbols, as already stated, are an issue of what lies in the mind, as they are mere triggers to activate a greater potential to manipulate the world at large, situations, and energy.

Most who will use symbols use them as references to something else. The Ankh, the symbol of life already mentioned is a symbol of spiritual protection and can be used for purposes of protection.

What makes common symbols like the cross or the ankh so powerful? It's pretty simple. If one spends enough time investing power and energy into any symbol or personal totem or sigil, as Jenova does, then they are going to build up the power surrounding that particular item.

A symbol stored in the mass consciousness of humanity is going to contain a significant amount of power and significance because humanity has a long-invested energy in the symbol itself.

By the same token, one who uses power words or symbols infuses the item with their own energy. They "train" their psychic selves to respond in certain ways upon the mention of the word or the viewing of the symbol. It is a bit like the Pavlov dogs experiment in the magical sense.

You condition the mind to alter itself at a signal and whether this is a word, sigil or hand gesture, it is effective after training the mind to react in the way desired.

I myself have programmed certain magical triggers to alter my mind, kind of as a "pay attention, it's time to do something significant" signal. I use these magical triggers (subtle and very simple gestures such as crossing the ring and pinkie fingers) to get my mind to sit up and pay attention at a different level than it would otherwise.

Some might call this instant magic, and they would not be far off by terming it so. If you alter your consciousness through meditation and teach your mind what it means to slow down its frequency and enter the magic mindset, you are going to be able to eventually associate that frame of mind with a symbol or power word.

Now, as to whether this is used towards personal gain will be up entirely to the practitioner. I know that I am primarily self-interested. I've used my magic triggers in Interviews. The most recent example was an interview that lasted 6 hours and was with 5 different people. This trigger altered my mind to the point of relaxation and sharpness that I associate with magic. And in a sense, I was using that mental mindframe to cast a spell on my interviewers which I then enforced on the astral plane later.

I'll be the first of admit I was underqualified by a long shot, but I did pass the 6 hour interview with flying colors... I have since switched jobs, but I haven't forgotten that application of instant magic.

The usage for self or others will depend upon the practitioner.

I firmly believe this. That would be the main reason why I gave up on Paganism/Wicca. I learned that simple words or gestures are all you need, and the big production was mostly for show.

I believe that any power associated with a word or symbol is usually one that you put into it. It's possible that through years of usage and tradition, that a power is developed with certain symbols that are used for one purpose or one power...perhaps through some kind of Global Consciousness that remembers these symbolic powers.

Blood creep, I use sigil magick, so you can imagine what words and symbols mean to me.

I also do some rituals, so I can understand the use of certain mantras or images to set the mood or achive particular desire and affect changes.

I personally like Peter Carroll, AOS, and Ray Sherwin's take on sigils and rituals both. Hopefully I can develop a few of my own ideas and go down in history like them.

I believe that words and symbols have power but mostly the power of focus for the caster.

I believe that the true power lies within and that it can be used as raw power if controlled properly, however a lot of people use words, symbols and other material objects to help them to focus on their desires.

Hmm well many different beliefs have merit. A lot of the Nordic religions actually used the runes to empower their weapons, tools, bodies and lives. Each symbol could represent a god, or a very specific meaning.

symbols are important especially if say you're working withe the Greater of Lesser Key of Solomon. This calls for absolute precision in the copying of the symbols and making sure you have the correct intent behind it

Personally, I think symbols can be powerful. But only in a form of Belief BEHIND IT.
You only need to look at the Cross / Crucifix to see people hold it close as a genuine symbol to their Beliefs.. and some never have it out from under their Pillow etc..

the Swastika was also used, it means Good Being in Sanskrit, But it was actually used as an Insult.. and reversed by adolf hitler.. ( i wont use caps for his name coz he was a nasty nasty man) to mean Injury, and bad luck.

The swastika is the oldest symbol and was used to sacredly represent the Goddess Artemis.
Early Christians even used it as a 'Disguised Cross'.

Runes have inherent magik. They were used in a variety of ways. The Rune symbols were worked in to the architecture of houses and buildings in order to grant the home it's self power and a further connection with earth energies. I have found that some of the Bindrunes I have used have worked and the bindrunes actually radiates with energy

Depending on the situation, words can have any number of effects. Symbols also do the same. These effects can range anywhere from social to psychological to spiritual. How it works is usually left to careful observation of the situation itself.

I believe in words and symbols as only focal points through which energy and power are gathered then sent out to do my will. They help to amplify power in manipulations, but can be dispensed with in low energy and simple works as the will and intent are the most important.
