Useful. Neglected in some circles, however very useful for all common types of ritual magick.
My thoughts ever since years ago in "Wicca 101" was that the elements do not reside only in a certain place or direction. Obviously. Air is not only east of you...or whatever direction you associate it with. I finally got the HPs to accept "to the East I call the powers of Air..." instead of "from the east..."
My thoughts are that it gives a good basis for focus of mind when you want to add extra perotection or boost the energy level in a place where one does their ritual magic. It's one of the basics. Now, think about everything else you know about basics and apply that...
Good for you, careful she might think your after her job,,,,
Well, I do not practice magic, but I do not think that the directions would affect your magic in a positive or negative way. That is just what I think.
When i practise witchcraft i do follow the four (quarters), but only for a focusing point, because if you think about it who sais that the north is where it should be a man had to come up with the directions and just because someone said north was on this side does not mean it is true, so i think directions only work for focusing your energy...
i believe that the four quarters each has a guardian which controlls all things that go from them.
I believe the 4 quarters are needed when doing rituals and spell casting. I also believe that you should honor the 4 guardians of those quarters as well
these four quarters are used during circle casting, to make a sacred space. they hold powers unknown to all but those who have tapped into them. they are strong beyond belief. trust in them to keep you safe when casting a circle.
I think what you are talking about is the Guardians of the Watchtowers...
Spells, wishes, will, prayer.......all down to our own belief systems.
Having no interest in magic myself except in passing, I have to say it means nothing to me.
I like using them for lots of things, including the circle. It gives balance to what I am trying to do.
I suppose it would be useful if you wanted a little extra energy in your spells. Like if you wanted to add a little extra "fire" you would face south during the ritual. (I think fire is south, sorry if I don't remember it right!)
Personally I have never used the four corners nor will I ever use them. As a chaos mage, I do not believe that your powers need to be focused by calling corners, watchtowers, gods or godesses, using incenses, candles and other worldly goods. I believe that the focus of power is buried within us all and can be tuned into by sheer force of will.
There are many ways to achieve your desired effect, and I do not believe that any material posessions could ever actually help.
That said, I do not disrespect anyone elses views in this matter, nor do i ridicule others for their own beliefs.
Mener
That little fire you speak of would be "passion." Great for love spells. West would be for emotions or dealing with them such as fear. North is for grounding to help you get back in your body if you are light-headed. East is for inspiration and knowledge, helps for taking tests. Then there something called "cross-quarters." Call on the Southeast for your Muse. Create the needs for the others if you wish.
east
west
north
south
those are directions that were made out by men, so they wouldn't lose them selves while traveling right?
maybe east + west could have some magic, if we would think the way that sun goes up and down thing, so seeing it that way that could be true
but all the four "directions" nah....
when working with the quarters i have felt the different strengths of energies be them subtle instances or large differences, particularly when casting circles or when evoking such gates as the west along with the corresponding direction.
i do believe those, like when you cast a circle, you must start facing north. also i believe those effect you by which way your bed is facing
i am curious has anyone ever had any negative experiences when working with the (4) quarters and if so what were they?
I think they are essential when doing magik.... the quarters are a part of nature therefore part of magik.... I however have yet to perform any spells.... I'm scared to do it cause I don't want it going wrong or away from my intentions.....
i also believe in cross referencing-combining more than one direction at times.
i feel that some spells need such middle ground to work sucessfully.
i beleive that thedirections are not nessarily a power of their own, but more likely a symbol somthing u can focus on to and therefore concentrate ur powers more and get better results however, i admit i am just as likely wrong as i am right they may have a power of their own, i dontknow

I don't believe in them. I believe they r just directions. None importance to me.
i think we all have our own personal ways of relating to the directions..
I enjoy some of these posts as I am just beginning to explore this and it gives me ideas for study.
I wonder only because the pentagram represents fire, air, earth, water and spirit...
Callinfg the corners is said to be essential to the Witch... each corner not only repersents a directions, but also an element. So to neglect that, to some could be considered, disrespectful... But it all depends on what your particular faith is. To some sects... its is not necessary to call corners at all, for there are other ways of representing the elements.
i always heard calling the corners to be like calling the guiden to protect each corner so no harm will come during a rite.
