Can Vampires be sick, and if so, with what and how would one be cured? I have never read much about sicknesses of Vampires. Nothing really beyond the obvious Myth of Vampires being pushed away by Crosses, Garlic, Holy water...ect.
But can a Vampire catch something like the Flu, or do those things no affect Vampires?
Modern day vampires can get sick just as humans can. We might be able to drain some energy or sip another’s blood, but we cannot stop the common cold or the flu.
As to the mythological vampire, who knows? If they in fact are solitary creatures, the chances of contracting a virus from other humans is greatly reduced. I hear they have strong allergies when it comes to holy water, garlic, and point spears.
I've heard that they can catch colds..but the flu..I donno.A cold can mutate..so the ammune system like any other creature cant fight it off before it changes again and attacks the body.
---
What I'd like to know IS..
Where do vamps go when they are hurt really, really badly..and have no other vamps to help them?I mean do they go to the hospital?I mean when the docs take blood samples..things can get outa-hand when they find out that he or she is vampire.
Are there..(I feel stupid saying it)
Vampire doc's?
If you are talking about fictional vampires, I would think that they would be affected by what was in the victim's blood, like getting a hang over from feeding on a drunk, or feeling down by feeding n somebody that was sick. Most of the time, in movies anyway, vampires are not affected by anything other than holy items and such because it is kind of hard to infect something that is already dead. If you think about it, all of the vampires of fiction are all dead and the only reason why they remain active and youthful looking is because of the blood of their victim's. Otherwise, they are jsut plain and simply dead and a collection of bones with cob webs. But, if you are talking about the modern day vampyre's, then yes they can get illnesses and disease's just the same as the next person. They may heal faster than otehrs because they can feed off of the positive energies of another and therefore boost their own energies which helps them fight off illnesses and heal faster. Carpe Noctem
Well okay, if Vampires can catch common colds, what about something like Chicken Pox? Or Bird Flu? Those rare sicknesses...
And lol, it'd be funny if there was a "Vamp Doc", though that's a pretty interesting thought. I wonder if there is a special person or thing that heals Vampires.
I am psy vampire and I get cold and flu and other sickness even cancer....just like any human being, no one is imune we all can get sick, some just have a stronger imune system then others.
So Vampires get all the sicknesses people do? They are nothing special except they drink blood? That's pretty damn boring...
Modern vampires can get sick, yeah, but some have a higher immune system, it seems.
Folkloric vampires, something in their blood makes them immune to sickness and disease.
And modern vampires have more psychic gifts than physical gifts.
Alright, modern Vampires can get sick. Can they also get injured then? Like break an arm or a leg?
with all the powers that a vampire is supposed to have i would not think that they would be able to get sick
I personally do not think that a vampire could get sick, i mean they are dead, and i am pretty sure that the cross's and holy water and garlic are meant to hurt them not make them sick...
Lets see, there is Doctor Bombay and the Addams Family's witch doctor. Then there was Paul Lydne for the Munsters. Doubt the undead get sick but if they do, would you want any of these docs to help you? lol.
As far as real Vampires go, first of all there is about as much physical difference modern and old vampires as modern and old humans (speaking in hundreds of years only)
And yes Vampires can get sick, it is slightly less offten and the porportionality between bacteria and viruses compared to regular people is about the same.
A Vampire "doctor" would simply be an elder or one who has more knowledge.
Anything that is alive can get sick. It's life. However for those who claim to be dead.... they should never get sick.
I'm soo sick I wish I was dead. No wait - I am dead! lol. Good point. lol.
i thought vampires were dead people.. and i think dead people no longer get sick
I think fictional vampires are dead , so they are immune to what us humans are not.
Modern day vampires are not immortal so I think they would be just like a human, getting colds and such, maybe they might however heal faster then others ..
In all the vampire books I've read, vampire immunity seems to be pretty much across the board: immunity to age, sickness, poison, natural death, etc. However, I did watch a tv show...that I cannot recall the name of right now...where a scientist developed a cure for aids. This cure, was like a disease or a poison for vampires if they were to drink the blood of someone taking this drug. Eventually, the vampires found out that the inventor had AIDS and had the cure down pat...They also found that if they drank the blood of someone who had AIDS, it seemed to be a cure for the disease...or an antidote to the poison.
In one of the Rice movies, Lestat was druged for a time, can't remember any film with vampires getting sick as such.
is was in the book and the movie "interview with the vampire" the twins that Claudia brought had been poisoned with laudanum, a strong opiate/alcohol. All it really did was slow him down though...not really a poison...just got him a bit drunk/high
I think we need to confirm whether V is talking about fictional vampires or today's vampires before this question can be answered properly.
Yes but Anne Rice didnt invent the vampire that is a fiction based theory ...I dont think a so called real vamp could get high
well i am a vampire and i do get sick so yea vampires can get sick
I wonder why nobody has done a story about vampire hunters capturing vampires and using them for scientific research, specifically in order to find a cure for illnesses such as aids. Huge corporations and the military would take over and in the end vampires would fight back to win their freedom and to save themselves, becoming the good guys in the end. Just a thought.

Someone living the vampire lifestyle... yes, because you're human.
The Undead, Immortal Vampires of Hollywod lore, why would they? They're already dead. How would someone who is dead get sick?
I would have to agree. Vampires are supposed to be dead so getting sick would have to be close to impossible. But there is no telling what nature can come up with and what can mutate in the world. Everything that moves is a target.
I absolutely adore stupid questions. They require no thought to answer.
*achoo* Yep, vampires get sick. Orange juice and vitamin C rule. Starve a cold, feed a fever. Hang a cross upside down over your bed and all will be better in no time.
Edit: Its, "Feed a Cold and starve a Fever." Perhaps some thought is required after all. ;)

ya of course vampires can get sick what if they get a hold of some bad blood do they go and hide in caves or some other abonded place when there sick who knows .
As stated before depending on what you think as vampire, hollywood or real, hollywood no they are undead and cannot be affected by such things, hollywood would never show dracula in bed coughing and sweating over the flu. as for living vampires we can get suick and are very much affected by others we are in contact with. So i hope this helps.
People talk about "Modern Vampires" and "Fictional Vampires". What the hell is that? All Vampires should be the same, unless one of them is fake.
Do REAL Vampires, if there are any "Real Vampires" in the World get sick, and with what?
Real vampires in this world, are simply people that drink blood.
They are people......... they can get sick
So what's all the Myth about Vampires being Immortal and so fourth? There is a difference between REAL Vampires and people who practice Vampirism or try and live that Life-style.
I am talking about Vampires that people have been talking about for ages and ages. Not today's wannabees.
hmmm.... well i guess i believe that true vampires were made up...
If "true" Vampires are made, then what are the Vampires of Today following? What Life-style are they following? A fake and made-up one? That's rather sad.
Well it began with Bram Stokers "Dracula"
Which was in a contest with Mary Shelly to write a horror story...
he based it off of the real Vlad the imaler. Who actually did not drink from his victims. He was seeking revenge from the turks for killing his family. Invited them all to dinner and then promptly arrested them
Many he impaled on stakes, a punishment that became his hallmark and earned him the name "Tepes" or Tepesh- impaler.
Vampires are merely a story....
Wow, I didn't know Dracula was based upon Vlad . That's interesting. So are you telling me all Vampires aren't real? Are they all really made up? Heh, that's rather...dissapointing.
I still think anyone that thinks they are a true creature of anything else but a human origin is retarded. Sorry but thats just me I don't really believe in things like this but it doesn't keep me from learning or wanting to at that. With that said I believe since "Vampires" as well as any other kin are just plain old humans that chose to walk a different path....they can catch anything anyone else can. Whether it be a common cold, the flu, or chicken pox.
its a romantic thoery though... people are seduced by the idea of vampires...
which is why so many become intrigued with them...
then you have authors like Anna Rice and Laura Hamilton who romanticize them even more...
its no wonder so many people are swayed to that sort of lifestyle
and yes Dracula was based off of Vlad...
here's a site you may find interesting...
http://www.vladtheimpaler.com/vlad_the_impaler_vs_dracula.htm
Yes, Vlad did drink the blood of his victims that he impaled. He would dip his bread into a saucer or goblet that contained the blood of some of his victims. The vampires that you see in movies and read in books are all fictional and therefore fake. They are based off of ancient myths for cultures all around the world. Some modern vampires are not fake. They are suffering from a condition called Renfeld's Syndrome. It is a medical condition that makes the diagnosed crave blood and require it to survive. There have been a couple of media documented attacks on people in the past where the attacker was suffering from Renfeld's Syndrome. The answer to your original question and all other questions herein can all be answered by research into the past both near and far. All it takes is a little effort and time. Carpe Noctem
Renfield's Disorder is said to be a mental illness...
really any of us could say that we have that just to be able to drink blood and say that we are a vampire.
People, please stay on Topic. RS is, like Kalest said, a Mental Illness. That means your body doesn't really require anything for it. Only maybe some Mental help or be put in a Mental Home....
Also, many people that DON'T have that Illness still practice Vampirism. What do they all practice it from? Where do they get all their information from? They get it from the past, obviously, which most of you say is fake and made-up? That's what's really saddening.
Renfield syndrome has already been mentioned several times. It would appear to be mostly psychological. Porphyria is an actual medical condition that could explain some of what is believed though it is doubtful that actually drinking blood eases the symptoms. Even rabies has certain elements that resemble the signs and symptoms. So, not only might vampires be able to become diseased, vampirism could almost be described as a disease.
Vampirism a disease? You really shouldn't be here then, you might very well catch something. =p
I was posing a thought, an idea. Besides I love being where I might not shouldn't be. But I'm not talking mythical, I am talking about the basis of the myth or the legend.
Yes, you were posing YOUR thought, as it's not stated anywhere that "Vampirism is a disease". So that is why I said, if you really think it is, then you shouldn't be here.
I do beg your pardon for having a thought. I was under the mistaken impression that this was a discussion when it was obviously something completely different.
I am not stopping you from stating your thoughts. Why is it when someone is called out on by their contradiction(s) and false statements that they always go "Oh I thought this was a discussion". It IS a Discussion, and I am doing just that...
Hahaha, contradictions and false statements. If they are already labeled then it is not a discussion. But I do bow to your wishes, this was, after all your thread to begin with. Sorry to have intervened.
Alrighty then....
One more Question - Do Mythical Vampire wounds really heal instantly or does it take a while like for Humans?
There are many mixed opinions on the time in which vampire wounds heal. I personally believe they heal a bit faster than humans but not instantly.
Is there any special Medication for Vampires? Hmmm...that would be cool. =p
Every person that I have known that claims to be a vampire seems to be sick more than most. Since vampires are people I think that they can definitly get sick.
I would think drinking other people's Blood would make you immune to some things, not make you MORE sick...
But oh well. Good to know. =)
I'm sure they can get the same diseases humans can get with the same symptoms and have the same cures and treatments available to them that we have.
Ok... Mythical vampires... do their wounds heal instantly....
no, they heal NEARLY instantly...
Its the werewolf that heals instantly....
we are talking mythical here though....
good lord its fiction!!!!
As fast as ya want!
Every movie/show whatever is different :P
To every Movie/Book there is some Fact. To every Fairy tale there is some Fact. I am here to learn about Vampires, not about Fiction Stories.
So please, don't Post if you don't know. =p
=)
I'm allowed to post where I please.
It was an answer to your question.
Youre asking about mythical vampires, and mythical vampires are based on books, movies and shows.
O.o
Mythical Vampires are based on Myth, not on Books and Shows. They are based on Legends passed on from Generations ago. This means that there should be a hint of Fact in the BOOKS and SHOWS you are talking about.
I agree Modern vampires can get sick, yeah, but some have a higher immune system, it seems.
Folkloric vampires, something in their blood makes them immune to sickness and disease.
And modern vampires have more psychic gifts than physical gifts.
Okay, thanks for everyone's opinions. Closing this Thread now. =)
