What is the difference between a Lycan and a Werewolf. Are they different creatures or are they the same.

lycanthropy is the transformation from human to a werewolf. So, the word Lycan is a short word for lycanthropy. Both are related to each other and technically, are the same.

From my side, I would say that Lycanthropy is the main category in which Werewolves come under as a sub-category. Lycanthropy includes an archaic definition where it involves altered behaviour and a particular wolf-like state of mind. Werewolves are pure beasts.

In my opinion ... commonly mistaken as a werewolf, the Lycan is a more advanced species that, unlike the werewolf, can for the most part control their transformations. A werewolf can only change under the full moon, and cannot control that.

I would say they are different sides of the same coin but a werewolf is more powerful. A lycan is a person who can change into a werewolf, a werewolf is that lycan once its in wolf form. A lycan can be in human form and therefore weaker than when it is a werewolf which is its total badass wolf form.

In the original Greek root the word Lycan means wolf-man aka werewolf. But language evolves like anything and the concept of transforming into any animal form is defined by the term now-a-days to me. In its strictest sense I'd say the real werewolf would be an astral endeavor rather than a physical transformation. But humans tend to add artistic license to everything and it is hyped far beyond in the scape of the imagination.
