After searching the forum for this, all that I am finding is about voodoo dolls and others.
I make what medicine pouches and was wondering how close the pouch could come to be a voodoo or mojo pouch. It has been said that either of them can contain locks of hair, gems & crystals, and some carry herbs in them.
My qusetion to all of you is a three part question....
What is your take on either of these? and How do you you use them if you own one or the other? and Can either of them be used as a healing device?
Mine was passed onto me by a close friend. It is how I remember him. So his medicine worked for me when he passed.
Gris-gris bags is what the voodoo people use to carry. They would bring results to the carrier, as well as the Mojo and Medicine pouches you speak of.
Medicine bags and their content, can be a tie to a person that you are no longer close to physically.
Dabbler would you say then that these bags can be used to protect someone, like the one that your friend gave you? I honestly didn't know that they could be used as a link between two people. Thanks for your answer.
Thanks Mysticwinds, I had honestly never herd them called Gris Gris before.
It really cured me of loneliness and helped with grief as well.
I thought gris gris were the beads and such tossed out during mardi gras.
The first time I heard of medicine bags was when I was watching the "Billy Jack" movie. Went to Taos and talked to a gentleman that carried his through WW2. His father made it for him. I made six of them last August during the Full Moon. Still have most of them. Waiting for the right time and people to give them away. I suppose I could add my recipe to my journal but things are buried at the moment. I did use herbs that represented the four winds, plus added some "other goodies."
i have an eclectic taste in magicks i use many items i believe that the pouch is more powerful if it is hand sewn by your self. i have a gold bag i have above my head when i sleep with several herbs and gems.
i have a special pouch i carry when i gamble it contains 3 coins from differant countrys as the spell i read said it should along with some sage and a note of what you wish this bag to help you obtain.
belief is the key thing with out belief there is no power
The difference between a medicine bag and the others a medicine bag is usually gifted to someone from a shaman, it is strictly made for that person. You can make a medicine bag yourself but it would be strictly for healing, unlike mojo bags and so on which can be made for various things such as to help with luck, money, or other worldly possessions.
My ex had the marble from her deceased little brother, some medicine pouches are past along, either by family or rite of passage. A good mourning item. A beacon for spirit resolution. I have heard people sometimes put bad medicine in their pouches as well.. a detox item, now that I have seen effect the out come of a rehab patients chances, why? because that was all he had to focus on.
True I had forgotten about those that are family passed, I have one but my adopted mother said is was to pass along the medicine held from a grandmother to mother then from mother to granddaughter. As a way to honor our ancestors.
gris gris voodoo bags are what they are called in new Orleans.
I had one for many years that I wore all the time and hung next to the bed at night, I found it kept me grounded, and when I felt lost I knew it was near. In mine I had a crystal, a shell a lover had given me, a hawks claw and some sage.
It sounds as if the bag's primary function is to comfort you. The medicine bag must be designed to heal the soul.
I used it for either. most of the time a Healing Device mentally.
The wife is the one who deals with the gris gris bags. She makes them when she feels I need them, otherwise I usually tie a medicine bag around my waste with items of memory within it.
That is what I was teaching my sons was to use it as it were a bag of memories. Hmm, thanks Soulshroud

In the Indian ways, a medicine bag was something of power, something a special person or shaw man wore, it held bones, wolf paws, or herbs. You could use them to heal someone, help a battle be one, of keep someone safe. It was something the Indians prised the most of. I do not know anything of a mojo bag though.
If a Mojo bag is anything like Austin Powers Mojo, I want one! Yeah baby, Yeah!
Yes Madman1313, some memories can being healing. I think on that note it would really depend on the memory that is in question though.
I think that any good memory or one that has a specific lesson will hold it's value in a medicine or mojo bag.
I guess if you really have to buy a beer to feel better, that is right on!
I have a bag that a friend of mine made for right before she left my life it has brought me luck since then.
So what you saying is the mojo bag is tons of money , yet helps?
the money is in case i have to go see my Shaman to get medicine... it is illegal for me to have the medicine he provides but is legal for a Native American
i had a medicine pouch in which lavender and some other mixture from France was inserted and it helped calm me and take away headaches
Gris gris should be individualized and not passed on from person to person. The conjurer or the voodoo(female) or the hoodoo (male) will add to the bag according to what you want it for. Once the contents are added you should never see whats put inside. You should add a personal item and tie the bag shut and never open it. It must be carried on your person in order for it to work. If you decide you no longer require it, it should be burned. Most gris gris are for protection and luck. As far as healing properties you must talk with the voudon who will then more than likely perform a specific ritual and provide you with further things you need to do on your on.
there are as many different kinds of mojo bags as there are people
i know a guy who keeps a fragment of the last crack pipe he smoked out of, he scattered it after the hit.
like the quote says on my profile, If we carry all the pieces of our past we are unable to embrace new things, so a token piece, of both good memories, and milestone memories, benefit from a mnemonic device,
we are likely to seek things out to put into our pouches, there for seeking something to show "evidence" of our spiritual memories.
Dabbler dude, you speak on a plane far above mine which leads me to believe that you have a Masters degree in bullshit, or you have way too much time to examine the darker side of life. Rock on.
i think either can be used for healing depends on how they are used
it sounds like its more for your soul, than for an actual ailment
i think either can be used for good or bad as in creating or destroying depending what energy the practitionier works with.
I dont use one,but have had one in the past that was given to me.Had all kinds of strange little goodies in it.
Well I too have recieved a few as gifts over the years and I have also given them s gifts to friends that are about to start their lives together or on the arrival of a new baby.
thats very cool,i use to have one but it was more of a native american style bag with rocks and herbs in it mostly
Medicine bag mojo bag one in the same as we all borrow from different traditions.
yeah true i suppose only the name is different but their purpose serves us the same.?
Count, I think that they could possibly one in the same but as far as usage goes it would really depend on the person that made it and what it was made for.
