I do my reasearch on many legends, origin of gangs, folk heros like John Henry...but one i can't seem to find out is the one of Sleepy Hollow.Does anyone know if it is fact, legend,or story based on fact?
That's a very good question. I wish I had a very good answer ... I, too, would like to know if there is a *reliable* source of information regarding this tale.
hello Pandy dear!!
legends..prolly are facts..or maybe if the author didn't have anything to do, like he was bored..he liked to write something
heheh!
I wish I knew also... it's always been one of my favorite tales growing up! The story is so fascinating, if anyone knows of where to find any information, let me know!
actully the sleepy hollow story is some fact.. but majority is made up.. like as stories progress they get things added to them and changed
wow janett i thought you out of all people would know. Now Lex where could you get the main part of the original story?
Well the author who wrote Sleepy Hollow is Washington Irving
Not always true,i've played around with many of the urban legends especially the poprocks/cola one....BS!!!
LMFAO...You had to bring that up, didn't you goofy girl~~:P~
hey maybe it requires original coca cola that had actual trace amounts of cocaine in it.....hmmmm
what was that all about Daer? :P
Oh well, when washington irving wrote the sleepy hollow..he had this little imagination thingy...
at least that's what I've learned in Literature of America..
hehe!
Ask Cancer. Cancer knows everything... at least he's really well informed.
I agree with Wraith... The Man is a veritable FOUNT of knowledge... and if he doesn't know... he'll more than likely have a full report on your desk by morning... I love a man with a brain...
Otherwise... I got no clue, darlin... all I got for ya is I'm related to Johnny Chapman... hehehe
To the best of my knowledge, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a lot like King Arthur and Camelot... There is no concrete documentation, yet there seems to be a genuine belief among the residents and descendants of the region.
Some would say this is how the old testament originated. Oral stories handed down generation to generation. Before the written word.. And then finally put on papyrus.
Alot of the king Arthur legend is based around the magical sword he had, around the time of Arthur most people didnt have access to weapons such as the sword and they were a powerful symbol. When a new method of tempering metal was introduced by the celts their blades became stronger and some people think that the legend of Arthurs sword was based on the new swords being produced around that time. So there is some truth to the legend.
actually sleepy hallow is fact turned into fiction like king arthur. it was based on a brutal soldier who beheaded all his victims untill he was sentanced to death and was beheaded as well. they say his ghost still haunts the town, but the fact is that no one really knows if its fact or fiction. they do know that ichabod did exist and was thought to be murdered by a man in a jelous rage and blamed it on the headless horseman. (yes i am a ledgend freek as well!)
Yeah I believe is it based on a German Hessian warrior from Germany.
Legends are manifested from storytellings told from generation to generation. Either based on actual events or expounded by similes and metaphors during their respective periods. Bottomline, it depicts situation, scenario and how people think and view the world at that certain period of time.
Watch Unbreakable with bruce willis and there is my answer (except its in relation to you question an not how the modern day comic we know and love came about)
