There have been many, many posts on the Lochness Monster, Bigfoot, The Jersey Devil, and the Chupacabra.
However only one on the Mothman. However that lacked basic information.
''For about 13 months beginning in November, 1966, a series of bizarre sightings took place around the area of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Aside from a spate of UFO reports and claimed poltergeist activity, several witnesses came forward with descriptions of an astonishing creature that may have been the focal point of all the weird goings-on. As detailed in John Keel's classic book, The Mothman Prophecies, hundreds of witnesses allegedly saw a large, winged humanoid being.
Here is how they described it:
approximately seven feet tall
a wingspan over 10 feet wide
gray, scaly skin
large, red, glowing and hypnotic eyes
able to take off straight up in flight, traveling up to 100 miles an hour
liked to mutilate or eat large dogs
screeched or squealed like a rodent or electric motor
caused radio and television interference
had some mind control powers.
Dubbed Mothman by a local newspaperman, the creature seemed to have a peculiar affect on those with whom it came into contact: they began to "channel" information from what Keel called "ultra-terrestrial" entities. Keel himself was affected in this way, receiving "prophecies" from some unknown origin that were, more often than not, oddly less than accurate.
Weird stuff indeed. Weird enough for Hollywood, it seems. A film production company recently announced that a movie version of The Mothman Prophecies is in the works, with Richard Gere heading the cast. It's a project sure to perpetuate the Mothman legend for many years to come.''

What does everyone think of such a creature?
Is it possible that this thing truly did exist?
If yes, then what do you think it truly was?
If no, what do you think the people who reported the claims truly saw?

I don't know if you ever heard of the show Paranormal State but they connected with what they believed was the mothman.
I love this show because not only do they prove ghosts exist but they try to help the families or people experiencing the ghost.
Anyways on this particular episode the psychic felt the mothman and all he could really get a feeling of was intelligence, which is rare when feeling a ghost.
Long story short it was interperted that the mothman was trying to warn people but there was only so much he could do.
here is the link to their episodes http://www.aetv.com/paranormal-state/ps-episode-guide.jsp
click season one and click mothman.
Ever since I was a kid I was told of the Mothman. And always someone my mom knew seen a Mothman. I wouldn't doubt if it's another unsolved mystery or perhaps an urban legend.
Personally I like to believe it's another one of those undiscovered species. Or perhaps a creature from another dimension that can show up here when our dimension and its intersect. I don't have any evidence to support my belief of course, but it's just what I like to think.
I think that we have so many unexplored and unexplained phenomenon on this planet that it's quite possible that the mothman exists.
I figure it's like anything else though...people will try to manipulate with evidence that is shaky. Just as some will try to disprove it with similar lack of support.
I seen the Mothman on Paranormal State also. They showed who they thought was the Mothman flying pass the towers before the tragic of 9-11. Some believe the Mothman was trying to warn people of tragedy that was soon to become. I put the Mothman as a mystery as the Loch Ness monster and Bigfoot.
"The Mothman Prophecies", staring Richard Gere and Laura Linny was released in 2002. It was decent entertainment.
As for the show Paranormal State "proving" that ghosts exist; the fact of the matter is that no one has ever provided credible evidence (let alone "proof"), that ghosts exist. Several people sitting around saying. "I saw/felt/sensed something weird", isn't proof (or even, "credible evidence"), of anything. When Elvis Presely died there were hundreds of people who came forward claiming they saw him after his death. No one happened to obtain any objective evidence.
Ghosts, spirits, souls, angels, and many other forms of supposed entities which are said to be the remnants of people after they die have been claimed for tens of thousands of years. Not once has anyone obtained any credible evidence to support any of the claims.
The Mothman seems to be still another in a long list of proclaimed entities for which zero credible evidence exists. I sometimes wonder; if man manages to exist for another million years, will people still be latching onto obscure claims like these and continue to proclaim they just don't have credible evidence... "yet"?
How long do you wait before you decide perhaps there's no truth to the claims?
What does everyone think of such a creature?
It could exsist, but I think that it was made up by someone or someones that just wanted attention. Part the of the legend of the Mothman is that he appeared when women who were on their period drove through that part.
Is it possible that this thing truly did exist?
hard to say
If no, what do you think the people who reported the claims truly saw?
They could have seen a number of differant things
There is one thing about the Mothman legend that is rather unique, it was only sighted during that short stretch of time. With other sightings on things such as UFOs, ghosts, bigfoot, and so on, people keep spotting them as time goes on. But the Mothman story was just that short stretch of time. It always struck me as really odd and it seemed to make it feel a bit more real because of that.
I can not rule out that any of them are not real, because I dont know for a fact that they are not. I would like to think that at least some of them are real, that way we are not the only ones here.
to be honest every myth had to come from somewhere so i think there is some truth in it...
wasnt there a film on it?...
I think that he does exist...whether or not he comes in contact with particular genetics I don't know...It is true such a creature could be quite damaging, but I feel that his sightings have been an attempt to warn of disasters. Such as the bridge falling at Pleasant Point West Virginia.
Mothman needn't exist for us to not be alone. We are co-residents of this planet. We share it with thousands of other species. One more would change very little when it comes to considering whether or not we are alone. Even without Mothman and other such proclaimed entities, we're far from alone. The key now is to take notice that we are not alone and discontinue treating our fellow Earthlings as objects.
As for the Mothman tale, it's as devoid of evidence as are most myths, including those I could make up on the spot.
I thought the movie was pretty darn good. However all we have is hearsay, What people have recounted or rather "seen". I haven't seen any photos or physical evidence so its pretty hard to swallow, but I try to keep an open mind for the most part.

Have you ver watched any of these shows? it's not just a bunch of people sitting around saying oh i feel this.....or i can feel this.
I did learn a little about the mothman after watching the movie based on the events in 1966.
During my research I found that the native American Indians use to call the mothman the Thunderbird.
Does such a creature exist. I think there have been too many sightings and eyewitness accounts to debunk the idea.
We can chose to believe it or not, but for those that survived the disaster and lived in the area the Mothman was very real. I believe that ths could happen not sure how to label the creature though... I am not one for labels of any kind.
My goodness they took the tale and made a movie out of it starring Richard Gere. It is a fictionalized version of the story. I have never heard of the Mothman referred to as a ghost...they don't really know what it is and I have read many explanations.
Sorry I see that someone has posted that. If we were to say there needs to be proof of these things...anecdotal evidence that goes for long periods of time isn't "scientific" proof but still it holds a lot of credence when it is a whole variety of people. No one can prove there is any kind of God either but millions of people believe in one of one sort of another...they totally outnumber all those who don't...I guess planet earth should be taken off the flight plan because it is full of many delusional people :)
I honestly believe that the mothman was created by a economically dead town to build tourism to make money. I believe they had seen what had happened to other places (like the Roswell sitings) that have had unexplained events and so tourists flocked to the locations to try and spot the phenomenons that had been supposedly seen.
Many people do believe in a number of things for which there is no supporting evidence. The number of people who believe in any concept is in no way connected to the likelihood that the concept is true. Yet, this is such a pervasive idea that it actually has a name; "argumentum ad populam".
Almost the whole world used to believe that the Earth was flat. The vast majority used to believe that the sun orbited the Earth. In some parts of the world it was widely believed that tomatoes were fatally toxic. And in each of these cases, there was a very small minority who based their belief on the evidence rather than subjective ideas or adherence to majority belief. In each case, it was the small few who were right. And history demonstrates that this is what we should continue to expect in the future. No matter how many people do or don't believe in a given concept, it's the objective evidence (assuming any exists), which speaks for the likelihood of a concept, not the popularity.
There is no reason to believe that the Mothman is real, even if a number of people claim that it is. Well over 500 people claimed to have seen Elvis walking around alive long after his death. That didn't make it true. Evidence is the only real guide and there's really no such thing as "scientific evidence". There is objective evidence and subjective evidence. Of the two, only objective evidence can be counted as a significant indicator for the veracity of any concept. Subjective evidence is virtually useless and by itself, nearly always wrong.
like anything else. to some.. one believed long ago that the world was flat.... some even today still think we are in the center of the universe.
the mothman threoy is like every other story. could be with some truth behind it. or some thing odd some one saw, and was told way out of proption....
For every person that doesn't believe there will be one that does but the movie was an adaptation and the bridge did collapse there. I don't know what they saw exactly. This is only how it appeared to look to them. There are many things we don't understand in this world so whether someone believes or doesn't it is just rationalizations pointing at other people to be loony because it defies what people believe to be reality. And why? Its because we are told this is so. If we didn't see it and if science keeps telling us these things aren't real or there is no proof then we can't believe it unless we are given a secret code that unlocks some conspiracy theory. I don't think this town got together and created something ... that is ludicrous. I don't know what they saw but they obviously saw something and this by the way is not the only place it has been seen. Even at that time and place it was seen in Point Pleasant and Charleston (W. VA) so that is two cities in kahoots. I have always thought there was a connection to the shadow people but to be quite honest I don't know and neither does anyone else here. All we have is our opinions and nothing more and I think numbers has a great deal to do with the viability of the siting. That's like what UFO non believers say and I have seen one in broad daylight with someone else. I haven't discounted it could be a governmental experiment as they have a history of secrets that come out years later...who really knows.
I myself know this story very well as I grew up not too awfully far from Point Pleasant. This is not a made up story but rather a real event that took place..most people focus on the Mothman himself..yes alot of people had witnessed his presence during that short period but no evidence to support any of the sightings. However, as in the movie, he was trying to warn of a disaster occuring near the area and a terrible disaster did occur...the collapse of the Silver Bridge while it was full of traffic. The river still holds some of the vehicles and I do not believe they had recovered all the bodies from that horrible tragedy. So some may say it isn't real or that he didn't exist but to those that live in the area who was around during that time truly believe that something was around the area during that time.
By the way, in the center of town they do have a mothman statue.
Here is a p.s. to the previous post. I am not sure but I am fairly certain that they have never found any conclusive proof as to what caused the collapse of the bridge.
They just had alot of these myths on animal planet with the lost tape series of information related to the cases that cops and higher gov't foundations had
http://animal.discovery.com/videos/lost-tapes-mothman.html
wow .. this is all interesting I have the movie with Richard Gere yet, to hear/read people discuss it , I find facinating. I think it is possible he did or does exist, and I feel that it may of been warning people before the bridge collape
i think it is possible.. i think the reason more people don't come forward is because you have to have some level of physic ability. they say humans only use 10 percent of our brains, so it stands to reason it takes someone special to actually comprehend seeing an entity.
the one person servived the tragic collapse of the bridge and made the numbers a fatalitys a number that was told to him ...i actually think thoe that one person survived it was because of these creatures or creature cant remember if there was more then one...some sort of angel with warnings
All I can ever say on the Mothman has been said over and over. Supporting evidence is lacking. Witnesses and the possibility of hysterics cause a lot of muddy water. There simply is nothing to support this.
obonewits, i hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you beleive in ghosts like you mentioned in another forum topic. not just that but believe in ghosts on only "hearsay" then the mothman should be just as believable. you did say that because of your upbringing you beleive in ghosts. (only when you said it i think you used proper grammar)
Forget the movie, go read the book. It was WAY more scary.
Basically though, people began seeing this entity in and around Pt. Pleasant W. Va. about the same time as a major UFO flap was also under way. Keel did investigations for about a year and half or so, involving both the UFOs and Mothman.
He did document some things involving "prophecies", though it was may more disturbing than that. Not only were the prophecies not always accurate (though sometimes they were.) but they appeared to be just accurate enough to build trust in the people receiving them, and then the phenomena seemed to turn against the witnesses, in what Keel believed was an attempt to break them down and destroy them.
Keel called it a kind of chimaera. Some kind of intelligence with the ability to manifest under certain conditions, but what witnesses saw, basically came down to what they expected to see. For some, it was visitors from another planet, for others, it was Mothman. He believed it is native to this planet and has been here from the very beginning, pretending to be gods, angels, faeries, etc, and now, "aliens from outer space".
As Keel also investigated in the field of cryptozoology, he did believe that some sightings of such things as Big Foot/Abominable Snowpeople may be real animals just not caught by Science yet, in Mothman's case he leaned more to it being this chimaera. Being that he investigated a much broader spectrum of the paranormal, he noted there were alot of striking similarities in terms of environmental conditions and physical symptoms shown by the witnesses. Such physical symptoms did not tend to show up with "normal acting" Big Foot sightings but did, when it was an "'abnormal" Big Foot sighting. It also tended to show up in those who were UFO/visitor and Mothman witnesses.
Keel was also the one who made the connection to the Mothman sightings first indicating a warning of some kind. He noted that paranormal sightings in general, and Mothman in particular, tended to go through a gradually escalating "flap" phase just before some kind of disaster. In Mothman's case, the culmination was the collapse of the Silver Bridge.
Anyway...I highly recommend the book about it if you're interested in this sort of thing. I'd not recommend "Paranormal State" personally. I've seen enough of it to think the kid needs to be deprogrammed of Lorraine Warren's teachings.
I actually saw a program on the mothman. I think quite possibly he could be a demon or even worse the antichrist.
