The Black Veil © 1995-2001 by Sabretooth and revised by Michelle Belanger.
A Voluntary Code of Ethics for Vampiric Groups and Individuals
1. DISCRETION
This lifestyle is private and sacred. Respect it as such. Use discretion in who you reveal yourself to, and make certain that your motives are to truly communicate about our culture and to engender understanding. By no means should you talk to others about yourself and our community when your motives are for selfish reasons such as self-promotion, sensationalism, and attention-getting.
Do not hide from your nature, but never show it off to those who won't understand.
2. DIVERSITY
Our paths are many, even though the journey we are on is essentially the same. No single one of us has all the answers to who and what we are. Respect everyone's personal views and practices. We cannot let petty differences of ideology prevent us from maintaining a unified community; there are enough who would attack us from the outside.
Our diversity is our strength. Let our differences in viewpoint enrich us but never divide us upon ourselves.
3. SAFETY
Use sense when indulging your nature. Do not flaunt what you are in public places. Feed in private and make certain your donors will be discrete about what happens between you. Donors who create rumors and gossip about us are more harm than they're worth. If you engage in blood-letting, put safety and caution above all other things. Blood-borne diseases are a very real thing, and we cannot risk endangering ourselves or others through irresponsibility. Screen donors carefully, making certain they are in good health both mentally and physically.
Never overindulge or get careless. The safety of the entire community rests upon each member's caution.
4. CONTROL
We cannot and should not deny the darkness within. Yet we should not allow it to control us. If our beast or shadow or darkside is given too much sway, it clouds our judgment, making us a danger even to those we love. Never indulge in pointless violence. Never bring willful harm to those who sustain you. Never feed only for the sake of feeding, and never give over to mindless bloodlust.
We are not monsters: we are capable of rational thought and self-control. Celebrate the darkness and let it empower you, but never let it enslave your will.
5. LIFESTYLE
Live your life as an example to others in the community. We are privileged to be what we are, but power should be accompanied by responsibility and dignity. Explore and make use of your vampire nature, but keep it in balance with material demands. Remember: we may be vampires, but we are still a part of this world. We must live lives like everyone else here, holding jobs, keeping homes, and getting along with our neighbors.
Being what we are is not an excuse to not participate in this reality. Rather, it is an obligation to make it a better place for us to be.
6. FAMILY
We are, all of us, a family, and like all families, various members will not always get along. However, respect the greater community when having your disputes. Do not let your individual problems bring emotional strife to the family as a whole. Settle your differences quietly among one another, only seeking out an elder's aid in mediation when no other solution seems possible. Never bring your private disputes into public places and never draw other family members into the issue by forcing them to take sides.
Like any normal family, we should always make an effort to present a stable and unified face to the rest of the world even when things are not perfect between us.
7. HAVENS
Our havens are safeplaces where everyone in the community can come to socialize. There are also often public places where we are likely to encounter people who don't understand our ways. We should respect the patrons of these places as we should also respect the owners of the establishments and always be discrete in our behavior. We should never bring private disputes into a haven. We should never initiate violence in a haven. And we should never do or bring anything illegal into a haven, as this reflects badly upon the community as a whole.
The haven is the hub of the whole community, and we should respect it as such, supporting it without business and working to improve its name in the scene so that we can always call it home.
8. TERRITORY
The community is extensive and diverse. Every city has a different way of doing things, and a different hierarchy of rule. When entering a new city, you should familiarize yourself with the local community. Seek out the local havens. Learn what households have sway here. Get in touch with key members of the community, learn who is who, and show proper respect where it is due. You should not expect to impose your old way of doing things on this new scene. Rather you should adapt to their rules and be glad of their acceptance.
Always be on your best behavior when coming to a new city either to visit or to stay. We are all cautious and territorial by nature, and only by making the most positive impression possible will you be accepted and respected in a new community.
9. RESPONSIBILITY
This lifestyle is not for everyone. Take care in who you choose to bring into it. Those who are mentally or emotionally unstable have no place among us. They are dangerous and unreliable and may betray us in the future. Make certain that those you choose to bring in are mature enough for this burden. Teach them control and discretion, and make certain that they respect our ways.
You will be responsible for their actions, and their behavior in the community will be reflected back to you.
10. ELDERS
There are certain members of our community who have established themselves as just and responsible leaders. These are the people who helped establish local communities, who organize havens, and who work to coordinate the networking of the scene. While their word does not have to be law, they should nevertheless be respected. They have greater experience than many others, and usually greater wisdom. Seek these elders out to settle your disputes, to give you guidance and instruction, and to help you establish yourself in the local scene.
Appreciate the elders for all they have given you: if it was not for their dedication, the community would not exist as it does now.
11. DONORS
Without those who offer themselves body and soul to us, we would be nothing. We cannot be other than what we are, but it is the donors who sustain our nature. For this service, they should be respected. Never mistreat your donors, physically or emotionally. They are not to be manipulated or leeched off of for more than what they freely offer. Never take them for granted. Appreciate them for the companionship and acceptance which they offer us, which so many others would refuse. This above all: appreciate the gift of their life. That communion is sacred. Never fail to treat it as such.
12. LEADERSHIP
When you choose to take a position of authority in the community, remember that you do not lead for yourself alone. Leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege. A good leader must set an example for everyone through his actions and behavior. His motives should be selfless and pure, and he should put the interests of the whole community before his own.
The best leaders are those who serve to better the community and whose person and behavior gives no one -- even those outside of the community -- a reason to criticize them.
13. IDEALS
Being a vampire is not just about feeding upon life. That is what we do, but not necessarily what we are. It is our place to represent darkness in a world blinded by light. We are about being different and accepting that difference as something that empowers us and makes us unique. We are about accepting the dark within ourselves and embracing that darkness to make us whole beings. We are about celebrating the thresholds: body and spirit, pleasure and pain, death and life.
Our lives should be lived as a message to the world about the beauty of accepting the whole self, of living without guilt and without shame, and celebrating the unique and beautiful essence of every single soul.
ok, I just posted a copy of the 2nd version of the black veil. I personally follow this, but some others may not, what are your opinions and if you could, what would you change about it?
It is not fiction it was created a long time ago first as an outline by Sebastian who has gone by many names and embellished upon by Michelle Bellanger. The thirteen is the first full listing. No one is using that one for the most part but it is still found on some websites. The number was decreased. There is also one that is only used in the Stregoi Vii. This has been posted over and over again...read the archives.
This is voluntary totally. It is not adhered to by everyone. After all it was written by people who aren't even 40 years old yet and were very much younger when they did. They are not the end all be all of the whole of the community. Those that think it has value try to follow it but this was made by Americans so how far it goes I don't know. Why does this always come up...shakes her head and walks away.
ok, can i ask why? i mean i know its your opinion, but i want start a discussion lol details maybe
I like the core ethics of it, i live by it
Did you expect me to respond with, "Oh my you are absolutely correct, I am so convinced that vampires actually exist?
I just wish people would stop being so out about the whole thing, it seems so many want to be accepted as being what they claim, that they are arbitrary with the don't tell or even hint to what you are/claim to be.
Well for one I know these people and the origins and how they bicker and I am an Elder in the community and everytime someone new comes in we rehash the Black Veil and why? It isn't out of a book of fiction it is out of a subculture whether it is believed or not is not relevant. It is sort of in my viewpoint and invasion of privacy in a place that consists of people who are skeptics, role players, kids, people who just like fiction and the like and insult people because they are part of the subculture and not now and again but over and over and over. It has been discussed many times in this forum.
A concern they should consider is that if their are those that believe as they do, then there is an opposition (vampire hunters) that seek hints to locate those who are/or believe themselves vampires.
mollidew, can you share a little more of your knowledge, because if i need to i can post the link of where i got this, i am interested in learning all i can, and i just started learning about the Stagio Vii
Its ok...I just wanted to make a point. I respect you and have read many of your posts. You are a very intelligent man. I am just saying I know these people and the stories behind them very well and if they fit her lifestyle and it works then fine but it has been discusssed here many times and all over the net including in videos on youtube.
That is just the point, to many people talk the talk, yet they have not delved past the fad phase, they are afraid to admit they are learning, they want to appear to be "In the know". If your goal is knowledge there is a thread about this, two i think each with a varied angle.
I know where you probably got this. The Stregoi Vii is very private now. There are some things you can get offline. You will find that list which is the old one at the House of the Dreaming and others but they cut it down to seven and then five that Sebastian uses. I like him and have no problem at all with him. One has to remember that these are only suggestions. Some in our Council think its important and others don't follow it. It is like the Vampire Bible. New people think it is for the whole of the culture and it's not. Only one group...The Vampire Temple...they wrote it and its solely theirs and they have dark gods, feed off the astral, shun sanguine feeders and consider what they call "humans" as nothing more than cattle. They have been around quite some time. The old school people keep in the shadows...it has been the rule for years upon years. It is the young people who mostly speak up about things. Time makes a difference. Before the 90s most of these things did not exist.
I had to go look at your profile to see what was going on. I read the posts and I hate to say this having an extensive background in magick and staying away from a lot of the Crowley stuff for the most part since they never really accomplished much in my mind. It shows by their end in life. Anyway what is vampire craft...there is no inate magickal rituals that can be written down. There of course can be groups that form and make them up. Some Vampires I know don't even know anything about magick at all and they are very active within the community. Some, lol are more interested in music and wearing black to all the top of the list functions.
yes it is a set of rules someone thought up thinking probably it would unite people in one thought and mind but no one is forced to follow them but you need to update to the more current list. This is the original one when it was fully written out. Since there have been so many changes and its cut down many have abandoned it but look at it as something that at least binds some together...their own set of guidelines. That's about the jist of it now.
great topic...
i find this voluntary code of ethics can go beyond the Vampyre Community.
its kind of a common sense code of honor to me that any one can use to better themselves
The Black Veil and the Vampire Codex are norms when it comes to vampire ethics, but many people have their own personal ethics they choose to live by. I personally have to wonder exactly how secretive vampires truly are when many come online or in person and tell complete strangers that they are sangs or psy vampires. The vampire lifestyle in the modern day is anything but discretionary due to people like Michelle Belanger and others who have publicly expressed tenants of the lifestyle, which the Black Veil would have us keep outside of the public eye. Perhaps it is the bad apples or ones who do not seem to have a guiding philosophy about the lifestyle that I see as examples of people breaking the Veil. If anything, the mere notion of many people not using the Black Veil as guidelines is indicative of a wide arrange of ethics, morals, and opinions about how one should conduct themselves as a vampire.
ok, understandable, i just think that some things are better left as they are, i mean, if someone comes and asks me "Are you a vampire?" and its a earnest question, i will tell them, but if its someone who wouldn't understand or who would exploit that fact, i would tell them its none of their business
My understanding of the Veil is that if a stranger asks, you don't tell. Nor do you flaunt it even amongst your comrades. The idea is to remain in hiding… in a public forum such as this- we are anything but anonymous.
Ok, lets look at this part....
"Use sense when indulging your nature. Do not flaunt what you are in public places. Feed in private and make certain your donors will be discrete about what happens between you. "
This make sence to all of us i hope, don't be stupid to feed in public, and don't let your swans go off and tell everyone about your swan.vampire relationshop. Any Comments?
Please remember to put quotations and properly cite when you are copying and pasting other's words. Thanks!
Lets take it section by section and see what else and deeper thoughts we have.....
Ok, to me, this means that we can talk about it, but we should be careful who we talk to and be descreat about it.
This doesn't mean live our lives in secrecy, it just means be wise with whom we divulge our secrets to.
We should only talk to people about our nature when it is NOT for self gain or attention. If we do that, we are not bettering the community.
So, just be wise is the deeper meaning i get out of this.
i agree with that,300 yrs ago we wouldn't have a choice if we told anyone we would be burnt at the stake lol
although the black weil is voluntary,i believe it should be a law for us,there is too many youngsters bringing unwanted attention
Things may be repeated. If it is being repeated....maybe its for a reason.
When it comes to the veil, if you follow it fine. If not, hopefully you or your house follows some type of guidelines/ codes of conduct.
The Veil, can be used as Sebastian uses many other things. Take what you need from it and discard the rest.
Lets look at section 2.....
Ok, to me, this means that we are on different paths to the same end. All life is basivly the same, you have the different paths, like witchcraft, vampyrism, christianity etc but it all leads to the same place. Have you ever heard the saying..."All Roads Lead To Rome"? Well, this is basicly saying the same thing.
Its saying don't fuid, be friends and at piece with one another, because if we are divided on the inside, the outside world can surely bring us down.
Yes this life style is not common by nature coz it would put the great dispute in between general human and vampires... even today this style is not looked good in the human societies and eyes. they treat this lif style as miserable plague would harm their generation and some one mad would go on sanguine practice on common peepal and children and harm them....
this style once looked equalant to cannibalism and they started living darkly.
even pope too banned all practices including even covens and dark covens...
I have a video in my journal and it goes into some of these things. It's an interview with Michele.
Sebastian was using a rough outline in NYC as guidelines for his activities. He was accused of taking it from Vampire the Masquerade. My opinion is inspiration is fine as long as it isn't plagairism. That part I don't know because I was never into that game. He and Michele got together and expanded upon it and the 13 rules were created. They later took it down to 7. He later for his group took it down to 5. Other things happened and there was a falling out and argument of who wrote what. It was written by them so I guess if Michele thinks it is necessary to talk about it, then it is her prerogtive to talk about something she wrote.
The Stregoi Vii is more underground and he told me members are instructed not to tell outsiders they are members. They totally frown on blood drinking period. He has some other things going but I can't say here.
I am pretty open but I won't talk about things that you can't find for yourself on the net or in a book someone wrote and published. It is in New Orleans where they are more old school and the most hush hush about things up until recently.
Here is the most current version of the Black Veil endorsed by House Kheperu:
DISCRETION
Respect yourself and present yourself so that others also respect you. Take care in revealing your nature. Explain what you are, not to shock, but to teach and to inform. Do not flaunt what you are, and know that whether you want them to or not, your actions will reflect upon the rest of the community.
Share your nature only with those with the wisdom to understand and accept it, and learn to recognize these people.
DIVERSITY
Among us, there are many different practices and many points of view. No single one of us has all the answers to who and what we are. Respect each person's individual choices and beliefs. Learn about them and share what you know. Our diversity is our strength, and we should not allow misunderstanding to weaken our community.
Find the path that is right for you and uphold this freedom for others.
CONTROL
Do not allow your darkness to consume you. You are more than just your hunger, and you can exercise conscious control. Do not be reckless. Always act with a mind toward safety. Never feed because you think this makes you powerful; feed because this is what you must do.
Be true to your nature, but never use it as an excuse to endanger those around you.
ELDERS
Give respect to those who have earned it. Anyone can claim a title, but a true leader will prove him or herself through dedication, hard work, and great deeds. Even so, leaders should be guides and not dictators. Look to them as examples, but always decide for yourself what you must do.
Respect the person, not the position, and understand that your choices are always your own.
BEHAVIOR
Know that there are repercussions to every action, and that you alone are responsible for your decisions. Educate yourself about risky behaviors, then always act with wisdom and common sense. Do not allow others to abuse you, but also, do not selfishly abuse.
Respect the rights of others and treat them as you would be treated.
DONORS
Feeding should occur between consenting adults. Allow donors to make an informed decision before they give of themselves to you. Do not take rapaciously from others, but seek to have an exchange that is pleasant and beneficial for all.
Respect the life that you feed upon and do not abuse those who provide for you.
COMMUNITY
Reach out to others in your community. Exchange ideas, information, and support. Be hospitable to others, and appreciate hospitality when it is extended to you. Do not engage in illegal activity, for this can endanger us all.
Seek to nurture our community and support all those who do the same.

I have the black veil writen in my wall in black light paint. the Coven of Noctem Aeternus has this posted in their pages.
this all sounds a bit far fetched to me? in my opinion vampire lore is all fiction as the undead are also fiction!
i am intersted in vampires , but dont beieve in actual blood dependent beings? yes there are those who drink blood! but its not life threatening to stop!
everyone is entitled to their own opinion and beliefs, and mine is that following any rule is a choice of the individual weather it is real or not!!!
The majority in the community do NOT drink blood despite what some may think. Neither Michelle Belanger or Sebastian Van Houten drink blood and there are many others. Those that do, drink very little of it. It is like an ounce or two every so often from a donor. They don't bite people but you will hear loonies online talk of that. I am not saying some never do certain things because many are also involved with fetish.
Their expression...the young people is infused with goth and the historical and/or novelistic vampire but that's all it is. There are bad apples in every barrel that take things too far but it isn't a majority. Doesn't matter what others "believe, " facts still remain the facts.
When you bring things in here that clearly belong to the vampyre subculture and not to the novelistic vampire or the historical vampire many here won't relate because most here know nothing about it or even for some that it exists. Personally to have people who are not too informed about it debate whether people within it which could be lawyers, doctors and many professionals you could walk by on the street and never know, is really demeaning.
The Black Veil seems to people under 30 to have always existed but it didn't and these two people thought there was something needed that people could read and use. They wanted to make a statement so to speak but...its a choice you make to follow it; for most they don't even think about it because in all actuality it is just using good common sense.
There is no difference here from religion. People should be more respectful to what some believe and if it was just a handful of people then that is one thing but it is thousands of all ages all over the world. For some the Black Veil speaks for a standard that we rely upon to show we have ethics. If some don't follow that one they write their own guidelines. Most new to the culture always run into it and they think its written in stone and its not but it is recognized to be a milestone in bringing people who have like minds together to form some cohesiveness.
The "scene" is one thing but the people are something else and they exist, live fairly normal lives and feel they need something regardless of source that sets them apart from the average human being. They don't think they are better or not as good but just different and they search for roots they can connect to for an explanation. It doesn't take people to believe it just takes people to not be bigoted about it and realize this is something thousands of people believe and feel is their heritage.
i dont consider this place "public", and even so, i still use a "nom de plume" when here.
while i do think most of the guidelines of the bv are quite wise, i dont always feed from the willing. when i psy feed, i make my choice, and then do so.
but then i dont take much energy from an individual.
when blood or sex are involved, then ofcoarse, i do get consent.
I am happy that you want to be a part of our community. The Black Veil is recommended or all vampyres.
I am personally a follower and I make it a personal misson to make sure that others like us follow it or at lest adhere to the rules about respect, and consealment from those who may wish to harm us.
I agree with both XTC and Skylar, The Black Veil is important. The code is what I go by as well.
I am not ashamed of what I am but however I do not discuss it with just anyone. Just as the Veil says.
People wish us harm and if we were to discuss this with just anyone it would not be a good thing at all.
Secrets are important and so is Honor.
Most young folks say this about the Black Veil but that says to me that they must think that the vampyre community did not exist until the two of them got together and wrote these guidelines. It is not a must to follow unless one wants to follow it. It is recognized because they put themselves in the limelight. Many groups have their own guidelines which is what these rules are but the 13 are old and they are down to 7 now for the main community and only 5 for the Stregoi Vii and all the associated groups to that.
It's all well and good but it makes us look like we have no ability to make choices that are good and proper within our culture interacting with mainstream society. I just say to each his own. I personally don't ascribe to it and most of my friends do not. We are aware it exists but there are many of us much older than the Black Veil. Just because they are well known and decided they "must" write something like no one could figure these things out on their own doesn't mean it is some tenet of the whole of the community. We after all are a culture and individuals and NOT a religion. We are also not a group to police each other. It is impossible to do but it was nice to propose it as something to think about just like when anyone proposes a view or new philosophy.
people are making some very good, points, I think no matter if you follow it or not, we all can learn something.
I believe the Black Veil is perfect, and as a Christian would say, I follow it like it is the Gospel.
In thsi case this point is most important coz awakening always is by conscious and by nature turned our total resolve
:
I agree with you on that, if any one is interested, in my journal i broke the veil into pieces and did a 14 part discussion on it.
you go dabbler.
"A concern they should consider is that if their are those that believe as they do, then there is an opposition (vampire hunters) that seek hints to locate those who are/or believe themselves vampires."
exactly. You aren't supposed to be in the open.
why not if people such as you think you can take us down then please come. we make a choice to either stay in the shadows or not. some have come out, and it is fully our choice to do so as long as we dont bring harm to others.
I think that if someone is newly Awakened or just starting their journey into the world of vampirism as a lifestyle or practice, then I think that The Black Veil is a well-written, easy to understand and comprehensive guide to start with and to recommend, especially if they have no mentors or other resources available.
Many people who are into Vampirism do follow The Black Veil Code of Ethics--they can't all be wrong. In truth, I feel that if more people followed it, Vampirism might become an accepted lifestyle and people would not have to hide for fear of what others would think or do to them.
For those who disagree or are just having a negative attitude due to non-belief, as with any other religious practice, belief, lifestyle or path you choose, no one is forcing you to adhere to it.
"I feel that if more people followed it, Vampirism might become an accepted lifestyle and people would not have to hide for fear of what others would think or do to them."
As many groups fight for Gay rights. As many people that have fought for equal rights (race-wise, gender wise etc). As many people have fought for whatever cause...There will always be those that dont understand and will bash you, ridicule you etc. Getting us all to follow the veil wont change that. If anything it will fuel more people to thinking we are a cult of some sort.
Just like there are guidelines for other organizations and lifestyles, they should be just what they are. Not all are going to follow completely and thats ok.
The veil isnt the absolute law but it is good common sense practices for those that chose to adhere. Just know that the veil wasnt always around and we as a people had to survive somehow.......
What I do not understand is why some Vampyres have trouble with this. It is clearly a good code of ethics that is much needed.
1. Do not hide from your nature, but never show it off to those who won't understand.
2.Our diversity is our strength. Let our differences in viewpoint enrich us but never divide us amongst ourselves.
3.Never overindulge or get careless. The safety of the entire community rests upon each member's caution.

We're not, we're are just controling it and letting only those closes and dearest to us know. Cuation can be your friend LoL

Sigh* You would not believe how many idiots on this site have said such crap to me.
A) Perhaps you are just "taking the bait" of someone who has made a joke. One of questionable taste to be sure. (pun intended)
Or...
B) If I am as serious about the stuff on my page as some of you are about the things on yours...do you really want to taunt my ass? Do you really seriously think you are invulnerable from harm?
My page is there because it pleases me. If you dont like it...go read some other page. It has nothing to do with you unless you make it have something to do with you.
As a representative for the vampire community, I am obligated to interject here about the whole "Black Veil" syndrome...
Todd made it back in the 90's for the benefit of his "Long Black Veil" counterpart. It was supposed to be a set of rules, regulations, and or guidelines for those of whom are or were starting out within the community.
Unfortunately it was taken out of context and is now considered to be a roleplayers, larping manual for those of whom claim to be "awakened" into the vampire.
Many within the vampire community including myself, look down upon the "black veil". I am sure ~Mollidew~ will agree with me that the "black veil" as well as any "vampire codex" are simply voluntary guidelines for those of whom are just now coming into the shadows, or have been "awakened" and are now seeking something out for the thrill of their own depravity, naivety or whathaveyou...That they think they need some sort of manual or guide book to follow as they think they are something which they have no understanding for. Thus following the leader like all other "sheeple" within any society that does out of pure curiousity.
This being said, I do not walk on egg shells for any individual or group for that matter. What I say is NOT, by any means law since I am a representative for the community. But my words should not be taken lightly. Any individual who does follow any "black veil" or other supposed "codex" needs to come to the realization that by using common sense is the best way to govern yourself accordingly without having to follow any type of guidelines. Do not be confused with any "manual" or "guide book" that tells you what rules to live by once you pass beyond any barrier. Though at times certain rules and regulations are nessessary. But not those built out of common sense.
If I were to establish a book of bylaws for the community and call it something like "Vampires Companion, modern ediquette for the newly awakened", would you live by it on a night to night basis if its contents agreed with your way of life? Of course not. No one needs any manual or guidebook to govern their own way of life. It is YOUR life, live it the way YOU wish to...Without looking to someone else for advice, unless you truly need that advice.
But, once the child becomes the adult they will realize what ~Mollidew~ has already stated. The "black veil" was made by children who were just coming into themselves. Which is why somethings within it have changes, some put in, some taken out. Revision after revision to suite the needs of the reader. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you choose to follow its path, this is YOUR choice. But, don't let others lead you. You should know who you are...After all, it is YOUR "awakening" is it not?
But I will save the after thought of "awakenings" for a differant thread.
