I work for a ghost tour company that takes groups into the haunted vaults of Edinburgh's South Bridge, which is regarded as one of the most heavily haunted locations in Great Britain. People often leave the tour with an exciting story of a paranormal experience that happened to them while in the vaults. However, the one thing that crops up more than any other, is photos of orbs. Many people believe these things to be some sort of paranormal phenomenon which shows the location of a spirit. I personally believe them to be nothing more than photographed dust. I do believe the vaults to be genuinely haunted since so many bizarre unexplainable things have happened there, but I will never believe that orbs are anything special until someone can provide me with some decent evidence.

I was rooting through some of my old photos earlier today, when I came upon one that I thought might interest alot of gullible amateur paranormal investigators. This picture, I know for a fact, is of nothing but photographed dust. I was taken on a very dusty lake shore. No one would give two thoughts to this picture knowing the location in it, but say there was a few graves in the background, they might change their minds. Graveyards, old houses, and infact most locations, have dust. Here is my picture...

Anyway, the point of this thread is that I would very much like others to share their photos of 'orbs' or even 'light anomalies' if they have any. I would be even more interested to see an orb photo that gives some sort of proof that these things have anything to do with ghosts or the presence of a spirit on that spot. I would like some sort of evidence that 'orbs' are more than just dust.
I look forward to seeing what comes up!

To me it just looks like rain or dust/dirt on the lense, but I am no expert in things like this.
Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

orbs are some times hard to explain, in fact alot of the critics say that it is dirt or obstruction on the lens, or reflections from raindrops or metal. yet sometimes we ponder for it is not on allpictures in consesion with the orb pictures, we must be sure that is what it is. I do believe in spirit orbs, but check the pictures before and after and se if it is happening in them too.

A cool party place. I bet their where some great ghost stories told around that camp fire. As the spirits stirred so did the sociogeist. I applaud the person that took the picture, how was it received by those who where there? Did it "reconnect them" to the moment you shared together? Do you know the history of the area?

I would be swayed by a double shot capture of Orbs.. I think Orb Hunters are far more fringe then EVP Hunters are.

There is even a sneaky way to make it appear that an Orb is caught on video, and it has been done actually. Yet some that do it claim it to be UFO related.

Thanks dabbler on the link, someone stated above about it being dust we know that, yet sometimes pictures do have orbs and the next in the shot did not, we must be skeptical on some plane of catching glimpses of spirits or orbs. i did state that i do believe in presence of spirits manafesting as energy orbs, yet this pic is just flaws on the lens.

OY uhh did you actually read the first post or just look at the picture??
My first post says that this is definitely photographed dust, and I think that every picture of 'orbs' I have ever seen looks very much the same.

Oh and in response to the lovely dabbler...

It would have made a great place for a party if I had not infact been there on my own :p I'm a big fan of randomly going camping by myself. All I did that night was light a fire and drink schnapps, hehe. The place the photo was taken was on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, in a particularly dusty spot. It is most definitely not haunted, it's just a nice area in the middle of nowhere with no significant history.

certainly alot of pictures of orbs have the same resemblance, yet have seen a few that the orb or single speck stood out more intense even a fact of being illuminated. yet speculation is all the same a flaw in the lens.

I would like to see the next frontier, that para normal hunters come-up with. EVP is spent, subject to its own over exposure. Orbs are Busted. Same M.O. the effects department needs to pull an all niter.

Dabbler on your words of skeptism of things and wise words to adhere, would a picture of an orb not fashioned by dirt be the same as a figure seen in a picture, a reflection of light or outline of a double exposure from a film before. or is there things yet to be know an accounted for.

I would suggest the whole idea go to the next level. If three or more sensors are used then all should produce some trace reading. yet the cameras are usually bee booping around, never fixed, or led properly. Spectrometers are usually rushed to a "hot area" after a person impulsively goes "I sense something moving over there." The non-investigative methods of investigators is becoming transparent in a dead horse field.

Something I have noticed is that people can almost never capture an image of anything ghostly except for orbs when they're using a digital camera.
Figures and ghostly shapes are more often seen on film cameras. Everyone these days seems to use digital cameras, therefore I see loads of pictures of 'orbs', but no figures.

And those photos that do exist usually need prompts, example "See the ghost in this picture..?" (the one I circled) as opposed to "Can you spot anything odd in this picture?" I mean that is the fun social factor behind ghost photos. The discovery, and confirmation by others.

I have seen some orb pics that were taken inside and they looked very solid not like the normal dust and light imagery.

I love that dabbler mentioned EVP.EVP and ITC is something just about anyone can explore with.Perhaps a thread of it's own.Very cool stuff.

This is a very professional work. I noticed, and it is quite clear what attracted this curios group of orbs from outer dimension. They are clearly admiring the drinks, the carbonated water, and additives water. It caught my attention as well how they observe the plastic bottles as of potential mating partners. That must be the reason why there are so many orbs here at the first place. It is a form of social gathering I believe, where type of bets nature will she go on a date with me or not, are what makes the nature of this social gathering and worthwhile. I am sure that this experience this group of paranormal orbs had here in our world will reflect deeply on their very subtle minds, and open them the path what the unimaginable roads of evolution their beings contain, and discover their full potential radiating with even bigger shine. It is a pleasure to know how our human world has a positive and useful effect on other species in their development. It makes me very happy. Remember, always leave a positive message in your environment, you never know who might be watching.

Here's a shiny example of a photographic ghost. It also speaks of the Photographers Skill, and even if it is not an actual apparition it is creative craft.

A movie that would be right up their with The Frances Fairy movie, i would like to see a movie about this photo, historic pic would do it rightous, it reintroduced para-normal investigations to the main stream, it took the tale out of ghosst tale, and presented what if to many skeptical people, believers, and investigators immortalize, and dog ear this photo. What a legacy for Brown.

It also shames modern Delvers. A Believer can seldom make a skeptic believe, but a skeptic can make a believer Truly Believe. I stopped humoring people that relate ghost stroies to me, at least the ones that are cookie cutter, on the spot improvised, or graft of of some "reality' show. Pardon me for liking to be entertained.

I like a little back ground, something I have seen on this sight. I give propers for a good performance, a craft is a skill if one can get a few people questioning what they may be cynical about.

Too many people mistake creative interpretation as evidence of something (usually faith based, or metaphysical), seldom do people consider that a creative process is used to create believable things. Imagination is morphed into a constrained belief. Sensationalism requires a dose every time doubt in the stimulating concept waivers. A larger stack of things people claim to be Ghost photographs is the result.

i would like to say i have friends in the paranormal field who are claiming most orbs are proven dust bugs and such but some are gases and well personally i feel if you look at it the sizes very as well as color could give reason to say there are some orbs with dust and we all know each person would hold a differant amount of light and size according to how one lived their lives so for this one pic that you claim is all dust iam gonna say 50/50 on it

We are having a very similar discussion in my house.

From the viewpoint of a professional photographer/videographer I have dealt with orbs on more shoots than I care to remember. I really have doubts as to the validity of orbs.
Particles in the air will show up on film, digital, video that you just don't see with the naked eye. If there is dust, there will be orbs. If there is pollen, there will be orbs. If there are insects, there will be orbs.
People claim to see faces in orbs. This is usually due to one of two things. The brain matrixing the image of a face because we are hardwired to recognize human faces in random patterns or the light refracting in the lens of the camera causing a smiley face.

In all of my years of investigations, I have never photographed an orb that I could confidently say was paranormal.
However, my opinion in this matter is not shared by most of the paranormal investigating community.

Don't get me wrong, We still shoot every investigation with digital stills and video and if there is something unusual about an orb it gets noted. But an orb by itself, to me, means nothing. A pulsating orb flying figure eights next to a levitating lamp would be a whole different ballgame.

No I didn't properly read the Introduction it seems, sorry.

But let me restate my opinion on "Orb Photographs" I feel that so many of them are in a location that renders high dirt, or the like, that many of them are fake, graphics designers, know very well on how to manipulate a photograph into showing ghostly figure that it gives another reason. Over all I do not use them as evidence.

As the opening post states, these are examples of unfocused light refraction, either from dust on the lens, or particles in the air between the lens and the objective focal plane. This kind of thing is often desired in photography but usually in the form of blurred leaves or spots of brightness in the background. Lenses are often rated on their ability to provide pleasing, round blotches of blurred color to help separate the sharply focused foreground subject from the heavily blurred background. In photographic parlance, the effect of nice round blobs of blurred light in a background is called "bokeh".

I have a 150mm macro lens that can provide gorgeous bokeh with shallow depths of field at large apertures.

Creative interpretation as evidence to something only might serve incorrectness in perception. A certain amount of imagination here and there definitely is here to give us wings, and that is very natural, natural for the human mind, which perfectly serves the process of learning in humans and discovery, as long that imagination does not cross the solid and very familiar borders of intentional misinterpretation, and common sense, where in its twisted form of overly imaginative interpretation denies the essential ability of sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts. I aint a fool aint I?

Re: "Creative interpretation as evidence"

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding but this looks like an attempt to confuse an interpretation of evidence, as evidence itself. They're two different things.

If I hear an unexplained noise on the glass of my bedroom window and interpret that as fairies who lust for my attention, the explanation has not become the evidence. I could just as well explain it as the hounds of hell scratching at my window in seething blood-lust.

No matter what interpretation one offers, the evidence remains only the noise on the glass. When seeking explanations, one should adhere to the explanation which requires the fewest unexplained assertions and with the exclusion of components unnecessary to explain the evidence.

The noise is more likely to be insects flying into the glass or creaking from the structure of the wall settling against the window frame than lustful fairies or anything requiring a connection to any entity never confirmed to exist.

When we find dust to be an adequate explanation and fully in agreement with the evidence, no further explanation is warranted. Only when we find such an explanation to be lacking in that it fails to fully explain the evidence is there cause or reason to look further. If one chooses to look further without regard for the founded explanation, they should be just a certain to work only within the evidence and assure that their final explanation doesn't require components of mere fancy.

Exactly, I've always thought that pictures of illuminated dust get interpreted as something paranormal when there's a spooky backdrop. A spec captured on camera is so often thought to be something ghostly, I think, because people so wish it to be.

I used to work in a photo lab & I had taken some film in to have developed. My best friends mom worked with me & they knew about the ghost I had living with me. Well, there was this pic of me that Gege took & there was like smoke all around it. Gege's Mom said she thought she captured my ghost. And as all good ghost hunters know, you always try to debunk everything. I took one look at that pic & told her that was cigarette smoke.

Cherry Jack potted .. That taste for back ground, how bad did that trip go for the guy that has no other pictures to show but the Orb picture?

We all have been approached with the slide show invatation, so when people suspect that others are jaded to or that their photos are never thought out well enough, it is time to bring in the Orb/Ghost Photo.
So here we have Motive, Para Normal investigators actually seek motive in Claim assessment. But creative presentation is most notable. It is the only reason I actually pause to look at any picture offered as captured Orbs, I will not always humor rank photography as Orbs, but I will be the first to point out a tasteful choice of back ground, and even use that picture as leverage to get a person talking/relating about their trip, looking for the other , not so super natural moments.

Here is another example of so-called "orbs" in a photograph.

Dragonfly Orbs

I've drawn red circles around four of them and left the rest as they were. (I borrowed the photo from a good friend.)

Most will quickly note that these don't appear to be floating in front of the subject of the photo and that is completely correct. These aren't the result of dust. These are the result of light being refracted in the background rather than the foreground. I would assume water drops are responsible for most of them.

This is what happens when intense points of light are blurred to a significant degree. The lens elements were arranged so that the light reflecting off the dragonfly would fall in sharp focus on the sensor (film plane) in the camera. The objects in the background are not within that same focal depth so they appear out of focus. Lenses, even the ones in your eye, have the ability to focus out to only a certain distance. Until you reach a point known as "infinity", things at longer and shorter distances will be out of focus. That's the reason camera lenses are designed so that we can alter the depth/distance at which they focus. We've likely all had times when a hair gets caught in the crease of our eyelid or in a brow, and hangs directly in front of our eye. We can see it, but it's blurry. That same thing happens with a camera lens.

So the picture in the opening post is an example of what happens when the objects refracting light are closer to the camera lens than the objects in focus and this photograph illustrates what happens when the objects refracting light are farther away from the camera lens than the objects in focus.

The other difference is that the objects refracting light in this photograph aren't floating in the air or stuck to the camera lens as are the dust particles in the photo in the opening post.

One other thing one might take note of in this photograph is that those blurred points of light are telling us something about the lens itself. Each camera lens has inside it, an adjustable opening called an "aperture". It's a series of thin metal blades laid out in a circle which allows the hole through which the image is focused to be adjusted. In many lenses, the blades have a curve to them to try to keep the hole roughly round in shape. Sometimes in less expensive lenses, they don't bother curving the blades. This can lead to less round shapes such as the hexagons seen in this image. So we can tell, without ever seeing the lens itself, that it contains six aperture blades and the blades are flat, not curved. That's why the "orbs" are distinctly six-sided.

I've seen this camera and lens. The lens is what's known as a "kit lens", and it supplied along with the camera body rather than separately. Kit-lenses tend to be of the less expensive variety so it's not surprising to find that it has a limited number of blades in the aperture and that those blades have a flat inner side, rather than being curved.

I am brainstorming a few ways to create orbs on Video, and I have two so far. one way to watch it form, and then watch it disappear. They can be filmed from various angles as well. well at least one way can. I have read where some one said this was the next frontier for the para normal people. I say if they can pull it off then more power to them.

Un fortunatly with no photographic experience with the parnormal, I will say from the pictures I've seen in this thread that all the shots have been taken at that "just" right angle to catch the light and that some were taken with a dirty lens. theres one way to know for your self and thats to clean your lens with antistatic lens cleaner so it wont attract the dust in the air, and then to use an 800 exposure or higher film, that is because the dust in the air shows on the photo because of the light from the flash, the higher exposure films can perform better with less of a light source, so you don't get the "dirty lens" effect.

I believe it's worth nothing that even if you don't have dust on the lens, dust particles in the air can still refract light leading to highly diffused points of light which are distinctly out of focus (AKA: orbs). And along that line of thought, the ISO rating of the film or ISO setting (for digital cameras), will not eliminate orb-effects because the light source is rarely the camera's flash. Most of the time it's the sun or other intense light source coming not from the direction of the camera, but from an oblique angle to the camera.

As for those suggesting catch-words such as "energy" and "frequency", an important note is that nothing but the physical has ever been confirmed to exist. There is likely very good reason for that.

But words like "energy" and "frequency" describe purely physical traits/conditions. They should not be applied to anything suggested to be other than physical. And if orbs do exist but do so at a frequency other than that apparent to the human eye, then we shouldn't be accidentally capturing them with our standard optical cameras. Standard photographic film contains an emulsion of silver halide crystals because such crystals undergo a chemical change when exposed to visible light.

The electronic sensor of a digital camera utilizes semiconductors specifically designed to conduct electricity when exposed to frequencies of visible light. So a standard camera can be said to be a device which not only detects visible light, but records the distinct patterns and frequencies of that portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Cameras even contain a special IR filter to filter out the affects of electromagnetic energy below the visible spectrum. So if the camera captured an image, it's because the image is completely visible to the human eye.

We know there are frequencies well above and well below they range of human vision. We see only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The spectrum is divided into seven sections; Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-Ray and Gamma.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

As one can see by looking at the graph, the visible range (visible to humans), forms only a tiny part of the full spectrum. But that doesn't mean that we are unaware of the rest or that we can't detect the rest or even render images based on frequencies well outside of the electromagnetic spectrum. An X-ray taken at the hospital is an example of a "camera" tuned to a different frequency. A heat-sensing camera is another example. Man uses such devices all of the time to detect weather conditions not readily visible or to map the energy dispersion of the universe. If one were to take a device designed to emit electromagnetic waves at a large range of frequencies, they could tune it to produce waves measuring 400 nanometers from crest to crest, the result would be what we perceive as a blue light. As the frequency of the electromagnetic energy is decreased the color will change to green, then yellow, orange and as the frequency approaches 700nm, red light. But if we continue to lower the frequency, we cease to see the electromagnetic wave produced. Eventually, the waves become "visible" not to our eyes, but to our radio receivers. A radio wave and a light wave are the same thing -- physical energy and part of the electromagnetic spectrum -- but at a different range of frequencies.

It may be fun to attempt to explain these simple photographic anomalies by suggesting them to be something as yet not understood or not recognized as existing to main-stream academia, but in the final analysis, they're simply "tricks of light" or similar phenomena, and display nothing to suggest they are anything but recorded light, in the visible spectrum, acted on by the optics utilized (lenses, apertures, etc.), to focus light reflected from surfaces at specific ranges.

I can show you all lots of pictures with one orb or with many and others with a whole damn convention. I was almost sold on the idea at one time BUT as it turns out I feel , 99% of these is orbs are simply dust , the other 1% percent prehaps a bug. It would be fun to think these things are real , maybe with sofisticated equiptment that could be a possibility.....but since I am not in that science , I will leave those findings to the porfessionals.

Dabbler,

Get a bit of glitter. You can use all one color or several colors mixed together. Find a nice sparse spider web such as that of the Orb-weaver (kinda coincidental, eh?). Blow some of the glitter into the web. Now position yourself so that light is glinting off of the glitter and manually focus the camera out well beyond where the glitter is so that the glitter is extremely out of focus. Snap the shot and you should have a number of foreground orbs. The same effect can be had by crushing glass into granules and blowing them into spider web or anything else you can think of which will suspend them in the air. Just be sure that the primary light source is reasonably intense, and leaves points of light glinting off of the suspended material.

Orb Weaver Spiderweb

It won't work if you focus on the spider web itself.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that to happen. Generally speaking, there are many who quickly jump to assumptions of the paranormal when confronted with an anomalous prospect. However, when asked for evidence or presented with purely natural explanations, most will fall silent and lose interest.

And bitters.

If the picture the "Orb" Shows in has value then all the better, even snake oil bottles have value. There is nothing wrong with a little believe it or not, but when too much is invested in such things.. Or when one expects others to show as much entuisasm as they do.. It gets way to intense.

In my opinion orbs could never be uniformed light circles, and neither could dust particles.

The circles we see in some photos as Beastt so eloquently puts it is refracted light from the lens. Nothing ghostly about that. I have a photograph with hundreds of these circles in my journal - it is a good example because I took the photograph into the lights of the fountains and that light bounced back into the lens and the camera zapped it.

It's not an absurd picture, it's a very nondescript picture featuring what alot of people might think are orbs, but are actually dust. I've seen so many unconvincing 'orb' photos that I thought it would be nice to see one that was a little more convincing, and showed me that maybe supernatural orbs do exist. Since no one has been able to do that, I will continue believing that orbs are bullshite.
