Being Human was a 2008 British television drama/horror, shown on BBC Three. Its pilot episode starred Guy Flanagan, Andrea Riseborough, Russell Tovey and also featured Adrian Lester. The programme concerned three twenty-something characters trying to live a normal social life, despite being a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf.

An online petition lobbying BBC Three commissioning editors to greenlight a full series was set up by a journalist from the Reading Chronicle newspaper as part of a review of the show. The article and petition drew traffic from across the world and with the latter now having been signed by over 3,000 people.

The BBC announced on April 24, 2008 that a six episode series of the show had been commissioned. However, the three leads have not yet been confirmed for the full series, apparently because of scheduling conflicts. Russell Tovey has been confirmed to return, however Guy Flanagan and Andrea Riseborough will not be returning.[citation needed]. In November 2008 the BBC announced Mitchell and Annie would now be played by Aidan Turner and Lenora Crichlow respectively for the full six episode series, which is due to air early in 2009.

Main Characters
Mitchell (Guy Flanagan) – quiet, calm and louche, Mitchell is a vampire working as a hospital orderly. He looks out for George, particularly around the full moon.

George (Russell Tovey) – George is less socially adept than Mitchell, despite his high IQ. After becoming a werewolf, he left his family, job and fiancee, afraid of hurting them. He works alongside Mitchell as an orderly, unable to hold down a more permanent job due to his monthly transformations.

Annie (Andrea Riseborough) – Annie haunts the flat she and her boyfriend lived in while she was alive, and is unwilling to leave it.

Herrick (Adrian Lester) – Very Important Person Vampire

Lauren (Dominique McElligott) – Nurse who dated Mitchell

Julia (Claire Foy) – George's girlfriend before he became a werewolf.

There have been a few "ghost" characters, on this side of the "Pond", but mainly in situation comedies.

This is so much better than trueblood. Deeper characterization, although in both cases they seem to be doing better with the werewolf/shapeshifter character than the vampire.

Being human, great title speaks to my heart, gets at the supernatural angst of being on the periphery in a way that is not so cartoonish as Trueblood, which is very graphic novelish.

Good casting, although I have a bit of difficulty understanding the ghost. What area of U.K. is her accent from?

The real test of performing a ghost is the transparent blocking skills. Acting as if people cannot see you, and those on supporting cast need skill to act as though their is no one there.. A skill my friends and I practice with a game called "Notional Associate" , when done right you can get a person so doubting that they will stop strangers and ask if they can see "This Person right here."

Casting is a great way to find very talented or troubled (depending on what kind of show you want), people.

An open casting is commonly used for reality shows. Once the rush to produce sets in, it becomes not about the quality of the show any more, but about the profit. It takes longer to screen contestants. How cheap. Short Cutters are so obvious.

i've been watching it. the identity of Annie's killer was no big surprise - kinda obvious i thought. i thought the eighties goth ghost was hilarious - got to be the most annoying ghost ever. but as usual with anything good, the beeb just have to hide it on BBC 3.

this is so much better than ITV's demons, which is really just a weak imitation of Buffy. in Being Human we have the "monster's" point of view. i wonder if we have seen the last of Tully?

BBC Three has commissioned a new eight-part series of supernatural drama Being Human. The show, which follows a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost living in modern day Bristol, has achieved strong ratings since it premiered last month. BBC Three controller Danny Cohen said of the series: "I'm thrilled that we are recommissioning Being Human. It's hugely popular with young viewers and [has] earned great critical acclaim

Ring the bells! Strike up the band! Make a cake and for goodness sake get that champagne open! Because Being Human has officially been recommissioned and will be coming back for a second series!

One big reason for the show coming back has been the fantastic reaction from you guys, the fans, for giving the show great viewing figures, making it the highest viewed show on iPlayer and making this website one of the most popular on the BBC.

Pat on the backs all round, and I for one shall raise my glass to you *hic*.

Danny Cohen, Controller BBC Three said "'I'm thrilled that we are re-commissioning Being Human. It's hugely popular with young viewers and earned great critical acclaim at the same time. It's also a very important staging-post in the successful development of home-grown young drama on BBC Three."

Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning added: "I am very excited Being Human is returning for a second series. It's a distinctive modern series that has captured the imagination of the BBC Three audience in terms of strong viewer loyalty and critical acclaim, signalling a real breakthrough for drama on the channel."

Rob Pursey, Executive Producer for Touchpaper Television says: "We already have some very exciting, very dark new stories up our sleeves, so we're delighted to have the opportunity to make a second series of Being Human. BBC Three has been a brilliant platform for us to mount an unusual and ambitious drama."

So that's the reaction from the big bosses, but what do you guys think? Time for a party, yeah!? And don't miss a special message from Being Human creator Toby Whithouse on his next post here on the blog... Woo-hoo!

I caught some of this on youtube, since I am in the US. It looks like a really good show. I wish I could watch it here more fluidly though. Even with high speed connection, it can get a bit laggy and really become frustrating.

Fantastic, I really enjoyed the series, it was a refreshing change to the usual paranormal drivel made in the UK. and Demons, omg, how rubbish is that show? I gave up after the 2nd episode.

Being human however got my attention, and I can't wait for the 2nd series. So much to explore with the ghost now, as she can draw dead people to her, hmmm interesting.

Oh and the nurse, did she get scratched by the werewolf? how long until the new series i can't wait.

I was surpised how the combination of vampire, werewolf and ghost worked. I loved this show.
This sort of combination is normally reserved for the kids but this is a defo no go zone for the young en's.

I watched the last episode again last week and just realized that George's girlfriend got 'scratched' by him. Can't wait for the next series.
