Recently, on yahoo news and local news. I have seen reports that a giant octopus is living in one of the oklahoma lakes.
The local authorities are stating that "the lake creature" is responsible for the disappearances and deaths of locals who were at the lake at the time.
And they plan to drain it soon.
Tell me what you think or know about it.
According to http://411chatter.com/495/oklahoma-octopus/
"This Oklahoma Lake Monster is reported to have the overall look of an octopus with reddish-brown, leathery skin and is said to reach the size of a horse. Other descriptions say it looks like a shark with tentacles.
No physical evidence or pictures exist on this fresh water octopus that supposedly calls Oklahoma home, and scientists know of no fresh water species anywhere in the world, but cannot offer any alternative for what some have reported seeing in these lakes for centuries."
There has never been a recorded species of freshwater octopus, and of all the known species today, the longest lifespan is around 5 years.
I highly doubt anyone is planning on draining the lakes in Oklahoma, as:
"The Evidence
There is currently no physical evidence to suggest that a creature like the Oklahoma Octopus does or ever did call the fresh water lakes of Oklahoma home.
The Sightings
No documented sightings of the Oklahoma Octopus could be located at this time."
Or at least so says http://www.unknownexplorers.com/oklahomaoctopus.php
It was a Native American legend for over a hundred years, describing the creature as having the appearance of a brown octopus. Mysterious deaths that may have occurred on or near the lake only serve to propagate the idea. Again, it's probably just the mystery. People want to think that there's something new that will "rock the boat". They want to question the commonly-accepted view of the world, for some reason or another, and stories like this fulfill their strange fantasies.
My opinion is that what is seen in the lakes is nothing more then a log or a tree over turned, come on you know yourself when you sometimes look into a lake and see a stick you think it is a snake at first, well that is it but on a large scale.
Well, I started this thread because a close friend of mine and her mother watched a "documentary", they said it looked more like a "mockumentary". Because it looked to 'professionally' done. Supposedly it was made by a teenage boy and his friends.
I know at lake Hefner back in the 70's, pirranah's were dumped in it.
Also in the oklahoma/canadian river we have GINORMOUS catfish, big enough to swallow a grown man.
So why couldn't it be possible???
Even if they drained the lake, it would be too muddy to walk across, and would be like a quicksand effect.
Also it could hide under the mud or in a tire, inside a dead animal, anything really.
The fact that it’s an Indian legend in the area is itself of interest. I have to wonder- how the people living in modern day Oklahoma would have had an idea of what an octopus looked like when they were a long, long way from the sea? Curious and curiouser.
Wow, sounds pretty odd to me.
Then again a lot of strange things happen in a lot of different places, just by coincidence. I suppose really it could be anything o_O;;
I am very interested to find out what it could be though, and the story of the shark with tentacles is pretty rad.
But people drown - they don't need a reason to, especially something as wierd as a freshwater octopus.
grasping at straws but....
sharks have been known to get into freshwater lakes, so perhaps other marine animals could...but again...oklahoma??? that seems a bit (A BIT) unlikely.
let us assume for a moment that this isnt just a tall tail or mass hallucination...what animal could be mistaken for the monster of the description?
Let's see, it's a stretch, but should a tree be uprooted by a tornado and deposited in the lake, its trunk and branches could easily be mistaken from a distance.
For sharks to make it into freshwater lakes, they have to swim upstream, and the usual motivation for doing so (if I remember correctly) is the search for food. It's an awful stretch (as you said) to suggest that.
Barring mistaken identity, there have been legends of mystical creatures from cultures all over the world. Before we discovered dinosaur bones, there were legends of dragons that LOOSELY resemble certain dinosaurs. Many seafaring cultures had legends about giant (often anatomically improbable) sea serpents, etc. Their resemblance to real creatures is often mere coincidence. Not to mention Native American tribes in Oklahoma weren't all that far from the coast, and stories of creatures like octopuses can make their way, by word of mouth, a great distance in relatively little time.
What of the stories about coyotes/bears/foxes/deer where the creatures are given human traits and personalities? Not every story has any basis in reality.
Many myths or urban legends lie within each country or state. yet it is tales of the years before when nothing was given for example. many written words of these have been lost in time. yet fact is always waiting to be disbelieved on it.
Bull Shark
It has been joked that the only guaranteed way to avoid shark attack is a life-sentence at Leavenworth. No dangerous shark (of the piscine variety, at least) has thus far been reported from Kansas. But, astonishing as it may seem, the large, toothy, and definitely dangerous Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) has been reported as much as 2,360 miles (3,800 kilometres) up the Mississippi River — near the community of Alton, Illinois. Even more remarkable, the Bull Shark has been recorded 2,610 miles (4,200 kilometres) up the Amazon River — actually in the foothills of the Peruvian Andes, which must surely rank as one of the most unexpected places to find a shark.

Those three lakes, Thunderbird, Lake Oolagah, and Lake Tenkiller, have always given me the creeps, and I always knew there was something wrong with them. My grandpa lived on Oolagah, and he told me he once saw something closer to this.
The reason this thing might be in the lake might be when the earth was newer, and mostly water, it had freely roamed were the us is today, and as time went on, and the massive land mass broke apart it became trapped. We have no Idea how many there are or how old this thing could be. I know that in Oolagah there was a sighting of a catfish the size of a grizzly bear. I can't find anything on it right now, I will try and look for it.
I have seen man-sized catfish from Lake McAlester and do not doubt they can get bigger. I like the landlocking hypothesis as it makes sense as most of the plains were one big ocean many thousands of years ago.
Sadly most of my knowledge of this matter have come from the internet and watching shows on the 360, Its more then likely that there are more then we will know untold sea creators that lay under are lakes and oceans. Many of then die out from what we are doing to the earth or are trapped in net and later kill for use to "Understand" them.
It kinda breaks my heart, knowing man will one day totally kill off everything.
There are secrets that we have yet to discover in the trenches beyond our reach, some day soon we may be able to see such wonders and maybe alot of myths will be answered.
Are you saying that there is a creature that's been alive for several thousand years, or are you suggesting that a creature of that size could have been around for so long, breeding, etc. and not have been noticed by any wildlife officials?
Not one things around for thousands of ears maybe a few hundred or so, and yes something that large could breed and not be found. We have more then once proven that we miss things. There was a fish we thought to be gone, and like four years or so ago we found open, and then more and more popped up. Things can happen, and yes those lakes are man made, but who is to say that someone did not bring something in to the lake. We again have been known to do this as well.
This is a paranoid overstatement. Man is incapable of single-handedly killing off even 5% (random number) of the species on this planet without killing off ourselves. With the EPA, all the regulations, etc., there's NO WAY we could or ever would "kill off everything."
See there you are wrong. Humans have destroyed half the earth just by being here and build towns and city's, drilling for oil and other things needed to live. Mother earth is showing us she is piss, the polar ice caps are melting, they are saying we are a few hundred year behind having a ice age. This article might help.
Why We're Destroying the Earth
Explains why man continues to destroy his environment. Increase in the carbon dioxide emission for the next 50 years starting in 2000; How people destroy the environment as they try to protect it; Ways in which people unconsciously hurt the environment.
By: Robert Gifford
On this millennial Earth Day, awareness of our depleting natural resources isat an all-time high, and yet, so is their destruction. A new field of research hopes to explain why we continue to damage the environment even as we think we're protecting it--and how we ca stop.
In November, nearly 80,000 people flocked to Seattle, Washington, to protest the disregard of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for environmental concerns. Impassioned demonstrators from San Diego to France inundated the streets of downtown Seattle for days, railing against the toll that free trade often exacts on endangered wildlife.
Unfortunately, the protestors' admirable pilgrimage to save the environment actually hurt it more than they knew. Consider how many well-intentioned individuals who normally would have stayed home flew across the country, sapping tons of energy and releasing vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. According to the U.K.'s Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, aircraft emissions of carbon dioxide could triple over the next 50 years, highly exacerbating global warming. This is just one of the ways we destroy the environment even as we're trying to protect it--a tragic irony that is one of the major themes of environmental psychology.
Many people, based perhaps on well-publicized disasters like the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, believe that environmental problems are most often caused--and best solved--by government or big business. Most environmental damage, however, begins not with government or large companies, but with the cumulative actions of individuals. If there is a solution to this global crisis, it is to understand--and remedy--the decision-making of individual consumers of energy before nature pays the price.
For about 30 years, environmental psychologists have struggled to understand the way we treat our surroundings, which ultimately harms our own well-being, since environmental assault can wreak havoc on our health, even leading to illnesses such as cancer. Over 100 studies conducted in the last two decades have examined the ways individuals influence the environment--from deciding to have another child to turning on the air conditioner--and why they make such decisions. We know that some people do refrain from overusing nonrenewable resources, from forests and fish to less tangible resources such as clean air and physical space. Environmental psychologists are now examining the mind-set of such individuals, hoping eventually to encourage others to consider our resources in the same way.
More and more people are environmentally aware these days--curbside recycling, insulated homes and Woodsy Owl's slogan "Give a hoot, don't pollute" are now ingrained in our cultural consciousness. You might think that awareness would lead to environmentally friendly behavior, but it does not: Well-educated, middle-class North Americans, the people most likely to have high environmental awareness, use far more energy than Third World residents--and other North Americans too.
Why the discrepancy between words and deeds? So far, scientists have identified at least 30 different personal, social or structural influences that affect whether a given person uses natural resources wisely or takes more than their share. There are four overriding ways that people, mostly unconsciously, hurt the environment every day:
o Energy use. Perhaps our biggest priority is to curb our heavy use of fossil fuel energy sources, like oil. Burning these fuels produces greenhouse gases and ground-level pollutants, leading to global warming, a planetary danger no longer questioned by experts. A 1998 study in the journal Bioscience showed that 40% of deaths worldwide are caused by pollution and other environmental factors. Furthermore, energy use is growing: Dutch researcher Linda Steg, Ph.D., reports that in the Netherlands, a region typical of developed nations, consumers now use 25% more energy than they did just 14 years ago.

True, yet scientist will disclaim this for that size of monster in the sea or lakes the food supply would be none existint. for them needing so much.
so this is why many of these myths do not survie. and they say only those who glimpse such a monster have only seen shadows or things in the water that would be logs or such.
Yet every year a new species has been found of insects or frogs each year, we do not know the secrets of mother earth yet and may never do...
I'd have to agree with those saying before you try to figure out where it came from we must figure out if it is there in the first place. i mean i am no non believer by any means. but think about this, we could sit here for years trying to figure out where it came from only to find out it never existed in the first place. and side note even a giant sqiuds life span is not that long. they just grow at a rapid rate. so do i believe its possible yea why not, but i do not think that it is likely at all. show me the animal and ill show you the most probable place for it to come from.
We never know and we wont till something pops up.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/02/010222075413.htm
I had to dig for this, yes we might not be the main factor for the warming, but we do help it along.
Don't know if it was said before, or even plausible.....but what if this lake is large enough to have underground chambers. I believe that is one theory in Nessie. Then the said creature could have traveled to the lake.
I do agree with the catfish idea as well. In TX I have seen some people fishing at a creek about 2 miles from my house. They were catching nice sized ones, about 2-3 feet on average. And this is a VERY small creek.
If the lakes are man-made (which two of them are), then it's incredibly unlikely that there would be any underwater passages or caverns that we don't already know about.
Yet man-made lakes are still under control of the earth and its ever changing plates. so when it was made it was know yet with time things could have opened up.
plasible, yet migration and transplants or even our own pollution could in fact have altered the species or life.
Now Now we are talking about urban legends and myth, could man made lakes have caves at the same level . Yes, springs or natural paths.
The plasible exixstance of a myth to be real, half and half. scientifically no not untill it is seen. scientist are here to prove the same as myth hunters is it real and could it exist.
we must take all the give info and desirn fact or plasible fiction.
Evelution is always changing. Wether it is us or the animals, World without humans is a good tv Documentry on this.
Now back to the subject at hand. Myths of certain states and countries, wether its Loch ness or bigfoot. Scientist will claim that no such evedience is to be shown to prove the existance.
yet to me its funny because these nah sayers are still out investagating these myths. why belief or just the fact they want to disproof claims.
Scientific evedience is not always right. and has shown its flaws.
Could things exist, yes, are they proven, no, but science theories and myths are not yet proven, but we are to say they could happen.
Myths people, the chance of a sighting the proof at one time, or a glimpse of something that could be. do we think it could be plasible..........
Answer here.......
Well stated, Yet like myths are myths tell proven, not doctored pictures or witness staements.
Yet we are still there to say plasible yet unproven. (MYTH) so these tales have survived in some instances over hundred of years.
Fable, myth or some thing yet in many tons things are still reported. brings us to why keep it alive or is this true.
science is in my mind based all on theory. and yet science is like ghost hunters look for the myth prove the myth and make it known. science.
Myths are myths. People are always free to believe them. It's the demands that they be investigated with no reason to do so, and the bad science resulting from one's unsubstantiated belief in said myth that bothers people. I'd rather people understand and follow the scientific method, as it's the only way to truly know whether or not something is real.
"science is in my mind based all on theory. and yet science is like ghost hunters look for the myth prove the myth and make it known. science."
You're half right. Science is ENTIRELY based on theory, but again, theories are far more than mere hypotheses. Science doesn't and can't know anything 100%. Germ Theory, Atomic Theory, Relativity Theory, String Theory, Quantum Theory, etc. could all be wrong. We don't know. What we do know is that every shred of evidence we have points to their being correct.
However, science doesn't look for 'myths' (as you put it). Science looks for evidence. Good science examines something, gathers data, analyzes said data, and comes to a conclusion based on said data. There is no element of blind speculation involved. Hypotheses are formed based on an observation. They are then tested to see if they sufficiently explain said observation. Not the other way around. No one makes a blind hypothesis and then tests it. There's no way to establish a starting point.
In the case of the Oklahoma Lake Monster, one doesn't say, "If we dredge the lake, we'll find the monster," then begin to dredge the lake. When said test inevitably failed, the only data gained is that there was no monster, and the only conclusion one could come to is that there isn't one. That would also be bad science. Since there is no evidence to examine as of yet, it is of no concern to the scientific establishment whether the creature exists or not. It's as worthwhile to investigate as is the suggestion that there's a small china teapot orbiting the sun following a path that cuts between Earth and Mars.
( When said test inevitably failed, the only data gained is that there was no monster, and the only conclusion one could come to is that there isn't one. )
as stated than like this monster is loch ness still investigated almost every year when time and time they have concluded nothing to be there in loch ness.
So is this just as you said(forgot the word) but lower class scientist wasting time. yet on this conclusion many scientist thru out the years have tried and failed yet later has achieved the goal. yet they did not think they were wasting time. at amy have been theory at the time or myth.
Much like dinasours we have no real proof of what they looked like just by skelton remains and assumptions based on species today. Yet no mating or pack habits or feeding trails.
so another scientific theory?
"When I find things which may be of zoological importance, I tell my qualified friends about them."
yet the legend i belive is dated about the time the natives were around. and who actually probably statred the whole thing.
So maybe a ploy to scare the whiteman off the lands. depiction of a monster that will kill intruders or just a bedtime story to make their kids mind.
Yet like most states have thei legends and myths and this one is no different.
The origin of the myth could be any number of things, including the reasons you stated. It could be entirely fiction; just another of their stories to tell children, or it could be based on exaggerated word-of-mouth accounts of something, etc. But indeed, most if not all states have their myths. It's nothing new to have stories about a giant freshwater octopus when there are stories of Bigfoot, the Lake Champlain Monster (aka Champ), thunderbirds, sea serpents that looked like a whale-wolf combination (I just read about that one. lol), etc.
Personaly I think its crap. I won't believe it till I see it and they would have to drain the lake for that if it even exists. I want more info!!!!!!
But since when has anyone really been able to trust internet-media unless it was about politics????
Anywho, I don't think there's a Lake Monster, but I'm not going to rule out the possibilty. Because it would be foolish to rule out everyside completely until the mystery and myth has been figured out.
I wouldn't mind doing the search and study myself. As long as I don't get swallowed by a mammoth of a catfish, I'm cool.
I just hope some money-hound, doesn't try and turn it into a tourist attraction..............**feels irritated at the thought**
many myths have now become tourist traps or attravtions, Bigffot lodge here in washington, lochness. Any way to help the economy of their town or region.
Many myths seem to be covered in some time by history or some other special. do a search and see if you come up with something.
I havent' heard about this but I don't think the lakes should be drained if it is true. I feel that if there is something there it is unique and should be studied and documented. I don't understand why people need to go to such extreem measures!
People make extreme claims. So those who want to say, "See it exist." will entertain draining a lake. While those who are convinced nothing is there to find sit back and wait to watch the idiots drain a lake.
Well, Oklahoma is kinda bankrupt as of late. So I don't think they'll be draining it anytime soon.
Would not drain the lake, a profit business for the stae to bring in people hoping to glimpse something.
I think what is there should stay there. Draining the lake or not, they just want to catch it and study as always which is almost always a result in death. Let it live and be.!
My family has lived here in Oklahoma for over a hundred years. Noone seems to have even heard of this creature. Most likely it was moonshine induced.
Supposedly it came from Native American myths (though I can't verify that. The locals would probably know more about it), so in all likeliness, it could be plant-induced (aka drug-induced).
A myth is to protect the land or something, They figured that if the land was unclaimed it was theirs.
It's a tough call because people get so carried away. New species are being found every day.
I honestly think it is someone's imagination getting the best of them or it's made up. Who knows?
Oh wow, cool. I live here in Oklahoma, so would like to know more of this and check it out.
There ARE HUGE Catfish in some of these lakes. That chick is right. And they ARE big enough to swallow people. There is a story that goes around here, that someone used to use kittens as bait to catch some of these huge fish. I know, sick. I'm just sayin'....
animal planets been doing series of these events .
http://animal.discovery.com/videos/lost-tapes-oklahoma-octopus.html
kinda remarkable on all myths in states
I'm going to go check that site out.
And La6Muerte66: Perhaps you'd like to back up that statement with an example? I say so because as we've already discussed, biologists NEVER take a new and rare specimen out of its habitat to study it, nor does the animal ever die while under observation. If you've ever observed what marine biologists do with sea animals, they tag and observe the creatures. You've never watched this on TV? Dolphins, sharks, whales, they stick a tag on the animals and leave.
Marine-biologists have dove DEEP in the ocean and found specimens that they've captured. As soon as they brought them to the surface. They died from the lack of pressure that they needed to survive.
Although I don't think that they killed them on purpose, but they still killed them by taking them out of their habitat. They are trying to create a container that exerts enough pressure to sustain them.
It's possible, there is a lake where I live some idiots tossed it crossbred fish a pyrana trout. Yeah I know. You can't fish there or swim there.... weird and yeah they are draining the lake....
i think it's a silly fantasy. it's the same with the loch ness monster. nothing that big can hide so well for so long. also, where are the corpses or corpse of these supposed creature? nothing lives forever. with our technology we would have discovered any unexplained creature and exploited it i'm sure.
probaly those giant catfish, turned meat eaters. LOL
No they are not draining the lake it was just suggested, and the creature would have to be small to elude he countless studies going on.
WOW! I'm surprised this thread is STILL going. I'm kinda proud.
Anyways Discovery Channel has noticed the popularity of "the creature in question". After putting the Oklahoma Octopus on their "lost tapes" episode. And are planning to research more into it and do another thing on it.
Good thread. The only real possibility I can think of is a squid (or large animal) when it was young was dumped into the lake. It grew and the stories started. Even when the animal died, the stories grew larger (*much like the fish that got away...) and stayed to this day. Who doesn't like a good monster story.
I want to thank you and all the people that have posted on here. Everyone has wonderful insights on this topic.
I have heard the stories about the pirahna's. They are at Stars and Stripes Park's lake. They have signs posted.
And our ginormous man-eating catfish. Some of the creeks by my grandma's old house . Had multi-colored amazon frogs, seahorses, and sunfish.
People in her neighborhood would either dump them in the creek or flush them (the sewage lines flowed into it). When they were tired of them.
So if ALL those creatures can adapt. Why can't an octopus?
It seems unlikely that true seahorses were living in a freshwater creek (possibly pipefish instead), but frogs and other freshwater fish, well, that's a simpler matter. They just have to adapt to the environment. Some creatures just can't live in freshwater because they haven't evolved to live in it. Octopuses are saltwater creatures, and there are no known freshwater varieties.
No known is the key to that last post, yet lately we have seen an abundantance of new species being seen or discovered. so with that i shall leave that on this note. we have only seen about half of what is on earth, and new discoveries every day.
If there is a "creature" leave it be and don't drain the lake just cause some idiots got themselves killed .....They probably deserved one way or another.
A young boy drowned in front of his parents and his body was never found. I don't think that was deserved.
