Holy objects- do you have to believe to use them?

In many legends it says to help fight evil you are to use a holy object or say holy words.

Now the question is if you do not believe in the holy object, can it really work to help you? How would you know to use it? Or could there be worse problems if you do not believe in it but try to use the object?

Let's look at this logically, assuming that holy relics have any sort of effect in the first place. The understanding is that holy relics contain the power of God/gods, and that's why they are effective against evil. If they have their own power, then it shouldn't matter who's using them, or how they are used, because the power doesn't rely on the user. If the power DID rely on the user, then what's the significance of a holy relic? If all of the power is within or dependent on the user's knowledge of magick or what have you, then the object (or words) shouldn't matter at all.

There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. People either feel that the right words or combination of them can have some sort of power, or that the power is within the caster and the words are merely a method of focus. I find both concepts laughable. The same goes with holy objects. Either they have power or they don't. If they have power, then it shouldn't matter who uses them. If they don't have power, then why use them at all?

This is hypothetical, of course.

I'd like to see a crucifix work on a Jewish vampire ... lol

Since you state that these are legends, then the whole argument is hypothetical...
Do we believe in a flu remedy when we use it?
I think the entire aspect is based on faith.

That depends on what you mean by a 'flu remedy'. If you mean the medicines that are designed to alleviate the symptoms of the flu, then there's no belief involved. The chemical reactions caused by the medicine can't be altered by whether one believes in them or not. Whether you want to fool your mind into thinking you've been 'healed' or not is your own choice.

As for the supposed homeopathic medicines or etc. that supposedly 'cure' the flu, they operate on the placebo effect, which has already been discussed at length.

It would require a certain amount of faith in order to "Use" the object. Its the same with things such as a "Magic" you have to beleive in it on order for it to "work"
But, having faith in something that magically "works" could be seen more as a Placebo effect. For example, there has been medical tests done on the subject, telling a certain person that they have a cure for something such as cancer and only injecting them with water but finding that infact, the cancer had start to retreat anyhow.
I believe thats exactly what these "Holy" objects are. There just a physical metapor.

The suggestion that one's personal belief (or lack thereof), can alter the effectiveness of an external object tends to be offered mostly as a response to the failure of such objects to demonstrate the affect/power they're claimed to have.

One doesn't need to believe that a gun can kill or injure for the injury/death to occur. One doesn't need to believe that their vehicle is out of gas before the engine stalls. One doesn't need to believe that the batteries in their flashlight are producing a charge differential across the filament for the flashlight to work. That's because these are all valid tests of claims made for the power of an object or substance.

If a proclaimed "holy object" doesn't provide evidence consistent with the claims made of the object, it's evidence that it has no such power, not that the user holds doubts about the proclaimed power.

If you flip a light switch and the light doesn't come on, do you conclude that you have a lack of belief in the mechanism of illumination or that the filament in the bulb is broken? It's the bulb or power supply, not the belief or lack of belief of the one flipping the switch.

La6Muerte66~

There is always believe in a product even if it has to be evaluated and that includes natural remedies. When a mother nurtures her young we may not believe in the medicine but we do believe in what mum says. We go on trust, faith.
Maybe I wasn't being very clear.
When we talk about mythical or mystical objects needing a belief for them to operate we normally refer to an 'essence' or the religious part of you believing it.

We may believe or disbelieve in any medicine we want. That belief does not have an effect on whether or not the medicine will really work. What relevance does this have to the original subject matter if you weren't implying the power of belief?

The implication is that a person's belief has an effect on a supposed magical property of an item that arises out of its being a "holy" object. If the object has power, then belief does not change that power. No power has ever been demonstrated by such an object, so people have speculated that it is the belief in the power that makes it work. It's apologetics at best. As was stated, if someone shoots me, it doesn't matter whether I or the shooter believe in the bullet. It'll still injure and possibly kill me regardless.

Without re-writing your paragraph ... Im sorry but I just didn't 'get' the gist of that. (sorry)
Let me try again ... If an object is blessed by the Pope, is that object now holy? If we believe it to be then it is and it has potential to do wonderful things ... again it's about faith but not necessarily in the object.

However, you are referring to things which are real. You do not need to believe in faith to see the existance of guns, bullets, engines, gasoline, batteries, flashlights, etc ...

There is not faith is material items.

But ... if you are trying to expel a demon by throwing holy water and saying: "The Power of Christ compels you" and the demon has no faith or belief in Christ ... can you actually expel the demon?

This brings up the question ... is it your faith that an idol is holy that makes it work - or the faith of whom you are using it on, that matters?

It is entirely about faith, when believing an object has power. If an object is blessed by the pope, it is firmly believed by devotees (Catholics, in this situation) that it is imbued with some holy power. A person who uses holy water (water that is blessed by the pope) to exorcise demons believes that the holy water will hurt the demon. However, it's commonly depicted in movies and stories that the water itself burns the flesh of vampires, demons, and other creatures of 'evil'. If this power were dependent entirely on the belief that it has power, then would the creature of evil not have just as much ability to negate said effects with their disbelief?

The faith that an object is holy only has an observed effect in the mind of the believer. Never has it been shown to produce evidence that either faith OR the object have any power whatsoever.

Re: "But ... if you are trying to expel a demon by throwing holy water and saying: "The Power of Christ compels you" and the demon has no faith or belief in Christ ... can you actually expel the demon?"

First you'd need a demon. If demons existed and there was any evidence in the proclaimed "Power of Christ", then that power should be enough without someone having to remind the demon that the power of Christ compelled him. You don't have to shoot someone and then remind them that the bullet has shredded their tissues before the bullet is effective. It's effective on its own because it is real and because it imparts substantial energy to the tissues... which are also real.

Re: "This brings up the question ... is it your faith that an idol is holy that makes it work - or the faith of whom you are using it on, that matters?"

First we need evidence that shows that the idol has done something claimed of it. What do you mean by "work", when you say that it "works"? What is the idol supposed to have done? Faith, as it is used in such cases, tends to be nothing more than belief in that which is shown to be false by the evidence. So while one might believe that which is not supported via faith, that's really all faith is -- believing in that which is unsupportable. Twain defined it as "believing what you know ain't true".

I think it si more based on the faith of the individual and not the relic or object.

For how can an object diplace a demon or ward of vampires or other creatures. mths handed down thru the centuries to find a way to deafeat evil.

Much like the movies, every evil has a means to be destroyed. the good guys always seem to prevail.

This discussion brings to mind similar questions about crystals and wards.

Many people say to use quartz crystals to keep your "working area" clean when performing ritual. Does the crystal then have magical properties that keep the "aether" clean? Salt has also been mentioned as a tool to use in magical practice. One particular example that comes to mind is when "disposing" of negative energy. A few sources claim that salt will dispel any negativity in the energy, or something like that. What are the supposed qualities of these crystals (salt is a crystal, so I guess it's part of the same belief) that allow them to "clean" the "aether?" Or is it the person's belief that the crystals will work that allows them to do so?

As for wards, or enchanted objects, do these objects have their own power as well, or do they also depend on one's faith in the spell? Many sources on magick will tell you to make wards to protect your house or family from evil spirits and such, but as with holy relics, would they have their own power, or would it be dependent on belief?

Of course, I again don't feel that there is any evidence for any of this, but from a hypothetical standpoint, these are valid questions.

My family coming from Italy had these charms in their house to protect the house from evil. Remeber it still.

Superstitions and traditions, yet I do think the faith in the object makes people have inner piece for themselves.

If you don't have any belief or faith that an object (holy or otherwise) has the power to cause change, for better or worse, why would you use it to begin with?

If an object were to be considered Holy, I think you'd have to have a fundamental belief in the religion of this object for it to have any power for positive change.

Of course, this is if any object has the ability to hold power other than the energy (positive or negative) the holder imparts to it (through faith, as mentioned above), for whatever purpose its used for.

This was part of my original argument. However, what if the object is being used on you? Does your belief (or lack thereof) in the object have an effect, or does the object itself have a power that isn't dependent on belief.

I guess it's more of a philosophical question. After all, when objective testing is done on said objects, the results are always negative. Just like how the only stories about the "power" of Ouija Boards are always from people who believed in them in the first place.

If someone who believes in and practices Voodoo makes a doll to represent you, then sticks it with needles, will you feel pain?

That's a basic philosophical question that has yet to be answered by anyone who actually believes in the supernatural. Never has it been demonstrated that a Voodoo doll has any effect unless one already believes in it. But to someone who believes these things can actually have an effect, the question remains as to whether any object can have its own intrinsic power, or if the power is only in the belief of the user.

I should have continued that. A person who believes whole-heartedly in the voodoo doll will almost certainly feel pain when it is pricked, but the question arises as to whether said pain is actually because of some power in the doll, or entirely in their own mind.

Re: "I think it si more based on the faith of the individual and not the relic or object.

At the same time, how can a belief (faith), displace a demon? Beliefs have never been shown to have any power to change anything. If you focus on a tiny dust speck and believe with all of your might that it will turn over for you, does that turn over the dust speck? If you believe photons will stop reflecting off a surface, does the surface appear to darken? If you were to focus on a single molecule of water in the belief that the hydrogen and oxygen atoms will separate, will that molecule convert to gas simply because you believed?

Beliefs have never been shown to hold any power to do anything other than to misguide those who place belief above evidence. Evidence has never been shown to be displaced or to be of less significance than any belief. And yet the evidence has as much to say for the non-existence of the spiritual realm as it does for the non-existence of fairies and elves.

Belief can misguide the believer, but that's pretty much the extent of the power behind any belief. And before anyone suggests anything about faith/belief in a the power of an object against any demon, spirit, ghost or fairy, they should first take note that without evidence of the aforementioned demon, spirit, ghost or fairy, there can be no conclusion drawn as to the supposed power of the object or any belief regarding any proclaimed power in that object.

It's a bit like suggesting that gremlins are repelled by unicorns. If you can't provide conclusive evidence of gremlins and can't provide conclusive evidence of unicorns, it's an argument based purely in the imagination.

the key is in the word "holy". what makes something holy? being sacred to a religion or faith. without the faith, it is nothing more than an artifact. the holy relic may be a weapon or tool, but it will need a conduit for the power to pass from the diety to the relic, and that conduit is the weilder. if that weilder has no faith or belief, then it will not work.

if a perfectly good lamp is connected to a perfectly good power supply by a solid plastic cable, it will not give light. it must have a metal wire running through it.

the principle is the same for holy relics - the user must have a strong faith running through him / her.

faith is only as powerful as the person who believes. nohing more. Like scientific eveidence, if something is given to me that shows evedience or scientific theory, and my faith determines other than that why would i believe in your theory.

Just like the cases being proven here. Holy object have been around since the dawn of our age and the key to the gods and their weopons.

Much like the mecury sword which Ghangis Kahn was theorized to have. do we believe its existance. why never been proven, yet the myth still holds.

The holy objects of the christain religion, from the ark to the thorned crown. faith is a powerful tool. will it ward of demons or anything < probably not, but for the person believing in the faith and object it holds a lot of power.

"yet if all we had was evidience or science, we would in fact live in the dark ages.faith has given way to many scientific revolations."

I beg to differ. When has faith ever given way to ANY scientific revelation? The Dark Ages was the period of history in which religion and faith ruled society, and science was suppressed, books burned, and heretics tortured and burned. Were it not for science, we would still BE in the Dark Ages.

"Like scientific eveidence, if something is given to me that shows evedience or scientific theory, and my faith determines other than that why would i believe in your theory."

Because theories are based on solid evidence, have been rigorously tested, and have never been demonstrated to be wrong, despite the rigorous testing. They can make predictions, and generally have to in order to remain theories. Faith, on the other hand, is belief in something for which there is no evidence. If you choose to ignore evidence because you'd rather believe something else that is supported ONLY by your desire to believe so, then you are closed-minded and willfully ignorant. That isn't an attack on your personal character; it's a fact.

Contrarily, the belief in holy objects has been around since primitive times, and only because the belief has persisted in spite of the continued lack of evidence are these stories of holy relics even still believed. I've never heard of this "Mercury Sword," but I can guarantee that without any actual evidence, it couldn't possibly have been theorized that Genghis Khan was in possession of it. A theory is not a conjecture. Don't confuse the two.

yet lets flip that and ask when has scientific revelation given any to faith. why is it so hard to engulf the power of faith.

Why because it cannot be proved yet it is relied on in our cultures and societies and takes up more than half in all living humans.

belief in objects whether its tailsman, crystals, daggers in rituals, every faith has its own luck charms or medalions. faith or science who cares it was just a post based on"do you have to believe to use them"

Just because an idea is popular does not make it any more valid. More than half the US population rejects evolution and believes that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. That doesn't make them right. Faith is so powerful because people want to believe there is something after death. They are afraid of their own mortality, even when there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. It is this basic fear of death, of the unknown, that drives people to believe so strongly and defensively that there is some greater purpose, beyond the glaringly obvious possibility that we are a statistical anomaly in a vast, empty universe carrying out pathetically short lives on a planet that cares no more for us than we do for it.

But I'm ranting and getting off subject, but the point is that faith in an object has never been demonstrated to have an effect on that object's "power", nor has it been demonstrated that any such object has any "power" in the first place.

Its all in the faith. I wear jewelery, a black beaded bracelet, and a hand made metal wolf. The bracelet, is to help contain the evil " " with in me and to turn in it to energy, to keep it from moving on to someone else, and harming them. The wolf is more of a protector to keep the evil chi and spirits ar bay.

Like I said the stronger the faith the stronger your object will become, no matter if you are right or wrong.

Re: "without the faith, it is nothing more than an artifact. the holy relic may be a weapon or tool, but it will need a conduit for the power to pass from the diety to the relic, and that conduit is the weilder. if that weilder has no faith or belief, then it will not work."

Such an assertion places all of the power in the faithful and none in that for which they hold faith. That means that the worshiper of a god has all the power and the god has none. Yet the connection between the artifact and the supposed power is said to be due to the god, not the follower of the god.

In the end, the primary measure is that there be evidence consistent with the power proclaimed in the first place. And as it stands, that evidence is missing.

Re: "yet if all we had was evidience or science, we would in fact live in the dark ages."
On the contrary, science has provided our emergence from the Dark Ages. If you talk to people who do not subscribe to science, you'll find that most hold beliefs consistent with the beliefs of the Dark Ages.

Re: "faith has given way to many scientific revolations"
Might you be persuaded to provide any examples? In most cases, scientific discoveries which conflict with faith tend to require about 200-years of violent struggle before they gain the majority acceptance of the "faithful". Fortunately, sooner or later, they always do simply because they are demonstrated via evidence and unlike faith, evidence is a standard undeniable via rational means.

In nearly every example I can recall, faith has been heartily at odds with science. This has remained the pattern from the very emergence of the scientific method some 400-500 years ago. Galileo struggled against the faithful when he presented his scientific findings, as did Giordano Bruno and Charles Darwin. Geology has come up against theological flood myths. Photosynthesis and the mean temperature of space are in direct contradiction to Genesis as is the distance to the sun, the function of the atmosphere and a substantial number of other faith beliefs.

True ,yet science and technology has given the humans the life we are in right now. Is this better than the dark ages. some aspects no.

we must have some faith, wether in religion or science. what we hold creates the society and culture we are to obtain.
Talking about relics or holy objects, alot of people have crosses as jewelry or in their homes. yet it is an object made of whatever, yet the faith or belief in it holds the spirit high. The belief is what gives us mortals the power to achieve. something science could never understand. the belief in ones self, belief in religion (whatever value), and belief the world is going to get better.

I don't wish to go too off topic here but would just like to respond to something that Beastt17 has written.

At the same time, how can a belief (faith), displace a demon? Beliefs have never been shown to have any power to change anything.

It seems to me that a person who believes ( rightly or wrongly ) in demons, would also believe in a power
( whatever that power might be ) that would defeat them.

Beliefs have in my view changed things, at the very least beliefs bolster an individuals courage.

"we must have some faith, wether in religion or science. what we hold creates the society and culture we are to obtain."

You're confusing faith and trust. We trust in science, because it has given us everything we have today. Without science, the life expectancy would be lower, the infant mortality rate would be higher, we wouldn't have the cars we drive, the planes we fly in, the computers or internet we use to converse with one another, etc. We would not understand life itself without the wonders of science, and all because we found evidence, tested it, observed it, and drew rational conclusions from it.

Faith is restricted almost exclusively to religion. It is the belief without evidence, or in many cases contrary to the evidence. Psychologically, some people feel they need faith to feel good about themselves and about their lives. That doesn't, however, apply to everyone. Do animals need faith to survive? They seem to be rather driven to maintain their existence without a belief in anything beyond mating, feeding, and staying alive. Humans are the only animals that think they need to believe in something beyond themselves in order to survive. Faith is the conduit for such a belief, as there is obviously no empirical evidence to support the idea of a higher existence. I personally liken it to mental illness, but few will likely agree with that.

Society is held together by the natural instincts of the apes we are. Chimpanzees and Gorillas form small groups as well, and they need no faith to maintain it. We are simply more mentally developed. Our group mentality hasn't changed. We only think it comes from elsewhere.

Cultures have been created and/or developed by a similar faith, but the fighting between said cultures is also motivated by differences in faith. A prime example is the fighting between the Jewish and Islamic cultures. The fighting is ENTIRELY due to faith. You can't say these societies wouldn't exist without faith. Nor can you say for sure that they would, but given that there exist societies that are devoid of faith, we can make an educated guess.

I agree that some of the most beautiful music and art have been created specifically about a particular deity or religion, but that doesn't mean that without said faith, the arts would simply disappear. Just the focus of said arts would be different. Life is still wonderful, even if there is nothing mystical behind it.

Since I'm getting incredibly off-topic, I'll finish with this: Both the power of an object AND the effect of it, seem to be entirely dependent on the faith of the user, what reason do we have to believe that without said faith such an object would still be anything more than just a mundane piece of material?

you always make valued points, yet alot of mortals do have trust in their religion, their political goverments. yet it has in many ways the values of faith in these things too.

Holy objects have always been assiociated since the dawn of the days. is there proof of these things. Spear of destiny. the thorn crown, cup of christ. no evedience of yet,

but alot look to these as real as the air we breathe and yet not found. the faith or trust in ones religions are their trust in something higher than we could explain or prove.

My beliefs on this subject is that in order for a "holy item" to work, one must have faith or belief in that item. You don't have to belong to any certain religion to believe in an item. But that would just lead into another subject to wither faith is only specific religion based or not. Basically I think the in order for the object to work, the power really lies within the beholder so to speak as I think one's own energy would be required to make such items work as well, not just the items them self or by blind faith alone.

well i believe that you do need to believe. because why use if you don't believe in another power. no matter who you worship.god,satan,budda,etc. there has to be magical powers around. and there is power in numbers as well. so the more people you have that believe gathered can do more.

We should recognize that if the power resides in the beholder, then the relic or artifact should be inconsequential to the outcome. That would essentially mean that there is no true "holy object", only misplaced belief in them. In the stereo-typical depiction of warding off a vampire with a cross, the cross then becomes completely unnecessary.

Re: "It seems to me that a person who believes ( rightly or wrongly ) in demons, would also believe in a power

Belief in a power is not the same as the existence of a power. If one believes their home is infested with pink, purple-spotted elephants and also believes that they can be frightened away using squeaky cat toys, does it mean that squeaky cat toys have the power to frighten pink, purple-spotted elephants? Or is this not better seen as an example of how belief in that which is contrary to reality can lead to further conclusions which are also contrary to reality -- superstition begets superstition?

Re: "Beliefs have in my view changed things, at the very least beliefs bolster an individuals courage."

Certainly, any sentient creature is likely to respond to some degree to the beliefs that they hold. If you believe a man has a gun and is moments from shooting you, you may well shoot him, believing it to be pre-emptive self-defense. But your belief doesn't change the fact that the man had no gun and no intention of causing you harm. Again, this would seem to offer illustration to the dangers of responding to beliefs which do not comply with a reasonable level of evidence.

Patients suffering from angina pectoris who underwent an experimental procedure to ligate the mammary artery believed circulation to their heart had been improved and due to that belief, reported a reduction in chest pain. But the fact remained that circulation was not improved and the dangerous condition remained as dangerous as before, despite their belief to the contrary.

Beliefs do have the power to alter our responses. Said more accurately, "we respond to our beliefs". But beliefs inconsistent with the evidence often lead us astray and prompt responses which are a danger to ourselves and even to others.

well written and said Beast, the mind has the power to believe that tailsman work or doesn't, the faith the human race holds in ones self that the object is helping.

ORIGINAL QUESTION POSED:

In many legends it says to help fight evil you are to use a holy object or say holy words.

Now the question is if you do not believe in the holy object, can it really work to help you? How would you know to use it? Or could there be worse problems if you do not believe in it but try to use the object?

My Response:

Holy objects? Hrmm... Lets see.
Depending upon your own personal belief system or religious orientation, this question has so many variables.

Holy objects, vestments, libations, amulets, talismans, sigils - just to name but a few - have various uses. As both an occultist, a shaman and a healer, yes I do use certain facets of "holy objects" ranging from self protection when doing a working right through to empowered objects that enhance any given working.
So my answer is yes. I do believe, as I do use and I do see the difference when using them in comparison to not using them. It actually can and usually does make a huge difference. Even as simply as using them for a shifting of consciousness, if nothing else.

Depends highly on your personal beliefs.

If you can demonstrate this to be true, you'll be a certainty for the next Nobel prize. You'll turn the entire world of science on end.

In the 1920s radium cures were believed to have the power to cure high blood pressure, cancer, goitre, stomach trouble, arthritis, neuritis, various female troubles, rheumatism, kidney trouble, constipation, excema and many other ailments. And yet the actual use demonstrates no ability to cure any of these things. How might you explain this?

Many people believe that prayer has the power to alter outcomes. And yet in virtually every objective test utilizing prayer-providers who believe in this claimed power of prayer, it is shown that no such alteration of outcomes is provided by prayer. How might you explain that?

To assume that no scientist believes in the Christian God, and therefore their disbelief is what causes the lack of results, would be incorrect. There are theist scientists, and I'm sure not all of them actively disbelieve in objects they test. However, to let any belief or disbelief interfere with the data and results is bad science, and most try to avoid it. If they didn't, such results wouldn't make it past peer review.

Yet in certain areas these so called holy objects have been sought after since the Arthur Fables to even Germany Looking for these to help control the world.

Scientific proof or not these objects still hold meaning in those who believe. The mind is said to hold the power to make a sick person be healed and in faiths these tailsmans are even stronger.

From christians to Voodoo tailsmans have ranged in all sorts of objects, and are still collected and used by those who are in this religious society.

"Scientific proof or not these objects still hold meaning in those who believe."

Indeed, they hold meaning, but that still doesn't mean that they hold anything more. They're sought after by many people for many purposes, be it historical significance, religious zeal, or simply to add to a collection. Whether they have real power or are just pieces of history (more likely the latter,) they're still significant.

"The mind is said to hold the power to make a sick person be healed and in faiths these tailsmans are even stronger."

Many things are said, but it has only been demonstrated and observed (under any sort of controlled conditions) that the mind has the capability of making a person believe that they've been healed. As has been said many times, people can alter the way they feel, even if a serious condition is still in existence. "Psychic surgeons," debunked numerous times by James Randi, have patients all the time who report feeling better after the "operation," then return home with the same problem they were "treated" for.

While the mind is claimed to do a number of things, it has never been shown to have a testable or observable effect on anything outside a person's own body. However, the expectation of a healthy recovery can and usually does reduce stress levels, which allows the body to naturally heal itself more quickly. That is one of the reasons a placebo can be just as effective as real medicine in some cases.

Re: "Scientific proof or not these objects still hold meaning in those who believe. The mind is said to hold the power to make a sick person be healed and in faiths these tailsmans are even stronger."

And yet meaning, I would suggest, is not the same as the power to make changes in the physical. One may receive a candle at their first anniversary and endow the candle with great meaning, even a decade beyond their unwanted divorce. But for all of the meaning invested, the candle holds no power to repair the severed relationship. The only "power" in the candle is stored within the calories in the wax, and the potential for the mass to be converted to energy; neither of which suggests the power to frighten away a demon, to overturn a dust speck, to repair a relationship or any other capability not tied directly to what science recognizes as the power inherent in a candle.

One might say that the mind has the power to heal a sick person, but as they say "talk is cheap". What is continually demonstrated is that the mind cannot, on its own, heal a sick body. Consider the implication that every terminal ill person who dies, does so because they didn't want to live enough to heal themselves.

There have been some very interesting research projects in this area. For years it was insisted that terminally ill cancer patients could improve their odds of survival by maintaining a positive outlook. Yet such assertions were not based on any kind of credible gathered statistics. So research was initiated to gather those statistics and the result is the recognition that there is no correlation between patient outlook and survival.

People like to assume that since the mind can signal the fingers to wiggle, regulate the beating of the heart, cause a muscle to twitch or prompt the body to relax, that it therefore has ultimate and total control over the body. But such an outlook ignores the development of the body through evolution. One must remember that the human body has evolved from what likely began as a small nucleotide chain inside a very simple membrane, such as a fatty acid droplet in a water base. Each modification from such a structure to the present human body is driven by environmental challenges. The ability to independently control any small muscle evolved slowly and was only retained when that ability provided a greater potential to survive to a point of reproductive maturity.

If the mind had actually evolved the ability to heal the body of any disease, natural selection insists that this ability would be retained and continue to develop, likely at a fairly rapid pace. And yet throughout human history, there is massive evidence in the belief that one might heal their body with their mind, but it is accompanied only by evidence to the contrary. And while interpretation of evidence can at times be puzzling, evidence is still reality.

Beast, La6Muerte66..

yes the mind can basically change the outline of heal in a body to the mind only.

My mother has had cancer for sometime now, and they gave her 6 months to live. She refused treatment and said she is going to have fun and enjoy her time before she goes. It has been 5 years to this date.. her doctor tells her it is the mind set she has.(the cancer is still there and getting worse.)

So objects percieved as holy, crosses and other tailsman, are infact just objects, but to the people who hold them and believe in them they are endowed with some power. The faith in believing is strong.

will it run off the devil, or demons, probably not. like the salems lot movie when the master vampire and the preacher went head to head

"faith against the face" we know the outcome...

"The ability to independently control any small muscle evolved slowly and was only retained when that ability provided a greater potential to survive to a point of reproductive maturity."

While this is usually the case, it is not absolute. If a particular neutral mutation, like the unnecessary ability to control small muscles, occurs in an organism that also develops a mutation that is beneficial, then the neutral trait will be passed on as well. That's not to say that humans definitely do have any of the abilities mentioned, but it was worth clarifying. Remember that the average person is born with several neutral mutations, and they undergo well over 100 in his/her lifetime.

However, if the potential for an ability is not already present in the genome, then it almost definitely will not spontaneously develop from a mutation.

see what we feel entire nature of the whole universe (I mean here feel entire cosmos) give us the matter, the entire nature will give us and what mode we dsire it, the nature gives us that way within the act of law of karma. see if you say oh god bless me shielding of my daughter from evil, nature will provide us as the God or Jesus or Mother Teressa. But important is divinity and feeling of the ask whome you asked. That directly reaches the core of the universe depand on your feeling towards your ask and the mode you asking from the cores of the universe.

The feeling of demand and awareness of giver in core must be there.

then mode may be mantra or monument whatever it may be. yes mantra help our conscious grown that way and work in that line.

Only about 10% of people diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) survive for 10 years or more with the disease, and Stephen Hawking has been living with it for 40 years. Some people just happen to beat the odds, despite what doctors expect. It doesn't necessarily indicate some special power though...

Understandable with ALS , but this is breast cancer, but that is here or there anyway. But the mind can indoubtably change the outcome of ones own thought process and have the abilty in my mind to slow disease or even in some rare cases cure.

But we must think objects presumed by believers is there faith to ward of evil or such. scientific or not we can not truly understand the patterns of the human mind and thought process. for we are not all computers that act and do the same program.

wether the scientific community or not believes in objects is up to them, but faith holds a lot to those. it is like taking the scientist computers away, for they are their symbols or objects of belief.

I agree with cadrewolf. Faith is what most people either consciously or subconsciously "rely" on. Its of a personal and most intimate nature of any given scenario or action (ie: ritual or otherwise).

In Voodoo, holy objects are a mid-stream to main ideal.
In Satanism, holy objects are fairly common in many regards.
In Wicca, holy objects are only to enhance the shifting of consciousness.
In Christianity, holy objects seem a must more often than not.
In Chaos Magick, holy objects are merely held within oneself.
In Shamanism, holy objects do hold SOME significance.

So really, it depends on the person, their intent, their purpose and their environment to which they dwell, either physically or metaphysically.

some faith healers would say yes. It has been in the news lately with religious people ho believe not in science or medicne but their own faith.

Objects are man made, and inspired by the religions they may be asssisated with. this is the belief. I wear a cross for my faith. will it protect me. my faith says it helps me from day to day. will it stop a bullet or rid of demons no. it is my own faith is why i wear it, for my inner faith.

So when people claim an object will physically demonstrate something they confide in that item, there is no faith.

A cross protecting a person from "demons" is unverifiable, so to assert that a cross has power to repel a "demon", is all in the head of the person who believes so, first they believe demons exist, then they believe that the unwanted demon, is repelled by the power of the cross.

So if something happens that can be intepreted as demonic happens, the persons faith is brought to accountability.. sad really sad..

but this is the way most of the societies feel. the religious faith(whatever the religion) is based on the practices and the inner belief of that structure.

If i stopped in front of a car would my cross stop the car, no, but my faith is if i did die i shall hopefully go somewhere better, or be hurt just a little.

do i claim demons possesed me to step in front of the car no. my own action. demonic possesions have been document yet are they real, i would need more evedience on this.

but the inner faith of the object to keep from getting sick or to ease my day to day routine fine, much like worry stones or crytals or even lucky money in pockets. all quirks of society.

If they are a holy object then it makes sense that you need to hold some sort of religion to actually use it.
Where if the object holds its own power then anyone has the ability to use it.
But of course your must hold some sort of religious belief to use anything with a holy reasoning i.e. a rosary.

Re: "If a particular neutral mutation, like the unnecessary ability to control small muscles, occurs in an organism that also develops a mutation that is beneficial, then the neutral trait will be passed on as well."

It should be remembered that the transition from a pre-biotic cell to a human, is an event which occurs over many, many generations and in the survival or failure to survive, for the members of any generation, traits will be either passed or will fade from the species. So while a single generation may obtain and pass both beneficial and neutral mutations, the neutral mutations are more likely, over numerous subsequent generations, to fade from the given genetic line within the particular species.

I would also suggest that it would be highly difficult to support the idea that the independent operation of any individual muscle could be seen as neutral. Since each muscle exists for a reason, having risen from the same kind of evolutionary process, the ability to have greater independent control over that muscle is almost always going to be beneficial, and will never (unless you can provide an example I've never considered), actually be shown to be neutral.

But then could it not be said that the actual power lies not in the object, but in the person using the object? And if that's true, then why would anyone consider the object to be in any way special or even necessary in exercising the power? What special trait or characteristic might be suggested of the object itself which would be in any way important to the utilization of the proclaimed power in any kind of meaningful way?

"So while a single generation may obtain and pass both beneficial and neutral mutations, the neutral mutations are more likely, over numerous subsequent generations, to fade from the given genetic line within the particular species."

They are more likely, but it won't necessarily happen. If the organisms with the beneficial mutation successfully reproduce more than other organisms, as natural selection works, the neutral mutation doesn't get removed from the genome unless a further mutation removes it. Unless that were to happen, it would stay in the genome of subsequent generations. The only example that comes to mind is retroviruses, though that's not really a mutation. It's still a permanent neutral change to the genome (if it isn't detrimental, which would be removed from the population rather quickly), and gets passes from generation to generation, which is why we share endogenous retroviruses with chimpanzees. The change stayed in the genome over thousands of generations.

"I would also suggest that it would be highly difficult to support the idea that the independent operation of any individual muscle could be seen as neutral."

I probably should have clarified, since by definition in genetics, it couldn't be classified as a neutral mutation. I used the term under the pretense that any mutation that neither aids nor hinders an organism from adapting or functioning is a neutral mutation. The mutation in some humans that causes increased bone density may be beneficial if humans still operated under natural selection, but since such an adaptation is unnecessary to our survival, it is what I'd consider a neutral mutation. In the context of this discussion, it may not be entirely applicable, but it was still worth mentioning. A human would be no more or less capable of functioning with increased control over a single muscle or muscle group, so I considered such a mutation to be neutral.

This is a very interesting discussion. Any object can be infused with energy. Literally pushed in, exact oposite of what a psi vamp does (Some intelligent PSI Vamp comment about this). I suppose that if a person was blessed by God or a Demon or the Elements and they channeled pure faith, protection etc, the object would still carry a charge. I have a few special crystals that are like that. I use them mostly for adjusting my aura frequencies but yes I believe an object can become infused with the energy of the believer and if potent enough (through repetetive encantation) could send a charge out to someone it was designed to target even if the person wearing it did not believe in it. Peridot stones are notorious for that. :) That's why you put them on your kids! -Chela

Re: "Any object can be infused with energy. Literally pushed in, exact oposite of what a psi vamp does (Some intelligent PSI Vamp comment about this)."

What form does this infused energy take? How is it retained? Since energy is a purely physical thing, it doesn't exist without physical mechanisms. Has anyone ever documented, measured or credibly confirmed this proposed quality which allows any object to infused with energy? Of course this is true, but I think the means, methods and results might be significantly less varied or useful than is being suggested. If you heat an object, you've transferred thermal energy to the object. This can be measured, reproduced and confirmed. If you put an object with mass into motion, it carries energy in the form of momentum. Again, this can be measured, reproduced and confirmed. But to assert the same in regard to the supposed "power" of a suggested "holy relic", would seem to insinuate some new kind of energy. Any comments on the properties and testability of this supposed energy?

Holy objects are used from much ago. holy water, concentrated one and other objects are much used. here the rice crop is much used in holy rituals and in spell works. or lemon or coconut is used. it fade takes away bad spell and even bad spirits some time other's soul too if spell is of that type. Holy water has most importance in hinduism. It used for purification and banishing.

What makes an object Holy? Man decides they are holy because they were used in connection to someone or something they believed had some sort of powers. Water is merely blessed but anyone could bless water. It wouldn't have to be a cleric but not everyone sees it that way. You imbue the water with energy of a certain type by your very thoughts. If you don't believe me look up the research Dr. Emoto has done with water and thought.

I have read more than a hundred cases of exorcisms and the one's that take the longest to work, from information I have come in contact with, are the more ritualistic. Those are usually Catholic and sometimes those don't work. Generally exorcisms done by a Protestant pastor or a trained lay person seem to work better from those I have read about otherwise in the past. I am not so sure if it is belief so much as determination. Whatever they are they lie and don't give their names but say something dumb like Legion or we are many or state some name that people believe in that might not be their name at all or even what kind of being if they are indeed a being at all. It could very well be something caused by the person's unconscious. Thoughts can do many things and we do know some have disassociative personalities so it's hard to know if any object would work whether one believes in them or not. I would say whatever the use is would depend on where the belief should lie as far as the practitioner or the recipient.

True Holy objects are deemed holy by Humans, yes we know this, for i am sure that in the animal world they may have a holy tree or something. It is what we as our culture has deemed worthy because of religious background , history or up bringing.

Exorcism, is not just done by catholics, more records have been done by them and yet are deemed not viable in any religion. But would like t see the studies that have been mentioned.

Faith or inner faith I shall call it seems to hold the meaning of holy objects. but like I have stated, the objects are essentialy man made and gave preceedure to the claim for history or faith based religions. that is all. its ones own self that will hold the faith in the object.

There seems to be a lot of conjecture on this, but i believe it will mostly come down to faith, but whether its the faith of the holder of the object or the thing you're trying to combat is the big question. If a thing is scared of a cross then it would matter little if you believed in it, but your faith in whatever you have faith in would be your best weapon in my opinion

If you didn't believe in something and then tried to use it whatever you were trying to use it against could sense that and the object wouldn't affect them. It's all about the energy you project.

Excuse me for seeming confrontational, but when has this ever been demonstrated, in literature OR reality? If the object has its own power, why would your belief affect the object's ability to affect anything? If the power is entirely dependent on your belief (and therefore not in the object at all), then why use the object in the first place?

Re: "If you didn't believe in something and then tried to use it whatever you were trying to use it against could sense that and the object wouldn't affect them."

It seems people want to draw two entirely different sets of rules; one for the "normal" world and one for the paranormal/supernatural. And yet the only one for which there exists any objective evidence upon which to draw any valid conclusion, is the normal. What the normal world shows us is that belief is a component entirely independent from that to which it is directed.

Take for example the small child (or adult, for that matter), who believes without doubt that the pistol he is playfully holding to a love-one's head is unloaded and harmless. He strokes the trigger, the hammer falls and ....

... his belief that the gun is harmless will have absolutely no effect upon the destructive force unleashed upon the other party's head if it turns out his belief was in error. This is what we know. This is what we can demonstrate to be true over and over and over. If I bring you to a pot of bubbling water sitting atop a stove, have you stand at arm's-length and then suddenly grab you and plunge your had into the water, will it burn you even though the bubbling is later found to be caused by a few pellets of dry ice in the bottom and the water is relatively cold? No. You'll attempt to recoil, but if the water were actually boiling as you would likely believe it was, the water would cause very serious burns. It doesn't burn you because what you do or don't believe does not affect the outcome.

If the water were boiling and you believed the bubbling was caused by dry ice, you'd still get burned.

We will often adjust our actions on the basis of our beliefs. But aside from that, beliefs do not alter outcomes.

1.Now the question is if you do not believe in the holy object, can it really work to help you?
  • I don't think that it can help you if you don't believe in it because in order for it to work won't you need to believe in the holy object... Kind of confusing but yea.

  • 2.How would you know to use it?
  • By reading a holy book that has the object in it or if you do believe in it then you can go to a church or place of worship and ask how to use it or simply use the good ol' internet... Come on, the internet has lots of stuff, it should have it.

  • 3.Could there be worse problems if you do not believe in it but try to use the object?
  • Not too sure but I doubt there will be any problems.

Holy objects- do you have to believe to use them?

RE: All in the faith or belief of the person I for one used to have faith in holy objects.Untill I attended a cleansing with an exorcism and none of which worked no matter what the priest did or said. This went on for a week. And after a week the priest said just move out of the house.
I lost my faith and belief after this happened. And I was so faithful I ware holy objects and even had a medicine bag.
Had holy relics and objects such as crystals in my house for cleansing rituals I went as far as to play with my corn dolly and that didn't even work I even made a wax doll used it on some one i really hated. I had so much faith i even saw in my head they were hurt. Nothing happened.

question Holy objects- do you have to believe to use them?
I suppose you would have to but I do not any more.

I know for myself , not that I would consider the holy, but the tools on my altar are all blessed. My chalice, bell, athame each bowl represent each element and so on and so forth.

Believing in something to use them, I would say more of that would go along the lines of charms and talismans. And yes I do have a strong belief in them.

Other wise it would be like going to church, going through the motions, but entering and leaving with nothing .
Anyone can go, but if your faith is empty, you get no where.

It is belived that a cross is a ward against vampires, yet what is the cross but 2 objects that form a lower case t. OR is it more? To them who believe in the Christ it is a source of power.. not the item itself but what it represents. To them who do not believe its nothing but an object made out of raw material. To me it come down to faith not in the object but the one that "endows it" with power... not the man, but superior being, hence making it more then just what mortal man can. So i'm in the mind set of: the object is nothing more then the focus point to remind one of where the power comes.. If you believe then its your strenght/conviction in what you believe more then the object itself.

What if you believe in the faith of the person who blessed your holy object? Does that count as a belief in the object not the reason it should work?

Similarly if you do believe in that person's faith doesn't that mean you think their faith has merit and therefore automatically have some belief?
