Ok I've been thinking of how little we know...
So assumptions should go out the window....

If the universe is so advanced...why should our signals have to travel 50 years to get there....

Perhaps alien life is enjoying our current programming for free right now.

And plus theres the internet....Who's to say that Aliens don't have their own internet....and if that's the case...who's to say they can't access ours?

Perhaps an e-mail you sent to a friend was seen by an alien hacker...or maybe someone you know online is an alien.....

So....as far out as that is....it's possible.....but what are your thoughts on that....?

If you believe thats true would it scare you? Or would you like to have an alien friend on myspace?

- Man I have wierd thoughts when I'm bored.

The signals travel as you said, and it takes time for them to get where they are supposed to be if the distance is very far. It is like when we see a star that is actually dead, but that we see now because the light took that long to get here; even though the speed of light is quite speedy :P.

I don't think that the internet connection we have here on earth reach that far, since it is made for earth only. But as you said, who knows. Perhaps these aliens have extreme hi-tech connections.

It would be cool if an alien got my e-mail.. I don't think I would be afraid, since there are so many other things that humans do that freaks me out; like destroying our world.
Then again, the aliens might just be as stupid as humans, in which case I'd be a bit scared.
At the same time, I'd see a lot of opportunities; aliens and humans cooperating for the greater good and such.

I really enjoy thinking about and trying to figure out the universe.. I believe that we never can know anything for sure.

Here we are, existing on a speck of cosmic dust, one that had the soup to brew us. A biocemical processor.

Even cosmic bodies are not perfect, when one expands things beyond, I feel the sensationalism robs the Here - Now-Experience.

Radio waves (aka electromagnetic radiation) travels at the speed of light. They can only travel at a maximum of approximately 300,000 Km/s. For it to travel several to several billion light years, it takes an awfully long time. Regardless of how advanced an alien race may be, if they're over a thousand light years away, for example, it will take over a thousand years for the signals to reach them. This is simple physics.

However, if such a race had transmitters located throughout the universe (who knows how advanced they could be, or how long they've been around), they could presumably receive the messages in less time and then convert the signal into something that can be transmitted more quickly (via quantum entanglement or something of the sort).

This being the case, I still find it highly unlikely that some race is monitoring us, at lest at any regular intervals. How could they be close enough to send and receive signals often enough, and quickly enough, without us ever having noticed them? It's interesting to speculate, though.

Well.. That is true, as far as we know. But everything we see process light, otherwise we wouldn't be able to see it.

Just wanted to put this song here: The Galaxy song - Monty Python
Monty Python makes you think and laugh at the same time.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

I think that what the two lab rats (~Los6Muerte66~ and ~Dabbler~) are trying to say, is that the Universe is a very vast place. Millions and millions of miles between planets. Mayhaps even billions in spots.

We know that Within Orions Belt lay another galaxy altogether. But, even if another galaxy had living residents that were lesser, equal to or greater then our own, that had the means to enlighten themselves via links to our air waves...Would they be listening in? Again, mayhaps.

But monitoring us? Hmmm, something to pondor and speculate. But paranoia is a moderate thing that should not be invoked. I am sure E.T. has come and gone on numerous occasions. As well as have left their mark in several differant spots. But if they were to survey us on a regular basis, what would be the point, the intention? Are we or this planet that special? For another civilization a galaxy away to keep us under a microscope? I doubt it, but it could happen...

Just remember what was said in the movie: Contact: Millions of planets and galaxies in the Universe, to think that we were alone would be extremely selfish...I don't know, Sparks. But I guess I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space.

I would personally speculate that mathematics is indeed the only true "universal" language. If we were being monitored...This would be the purpose of my experiments...Scientifically mathematical really.

I like how Richard Dawkin stated it, one can begin to speculate, what core element distant galactic life would be based on, even a lichen would be phenomenal, so to extrapulate on speculation, and to dictate absolute certainties is an exercise in imagination, to really stretch the imagination/ speculation spectrum to include the possibility, as opposed to probability
Of distant galactic bio-mass advancing to be able to travel farther perhaps then the life span of their solar system. So communication would be a stretch, but not as vast a speculation as extra-terrestrial , now one can go into terrestrial beings, but that would also be an exercise in imagination.

Too bad we may not know the truth for sometime. Even simple imagination can provoke reality in some forms. Such as partial proof of intergalactic communications. Just because some do not believe it can happen, does not mean that others do not share their skepticisms.

The post that ~Dabbler~ left seems as though it is a formal and doubtful answer. As it seems purely based on wishful thinking.

There has been proof, that lines of communication have been opened on a planetary/ galactic basis. Our old radio waves have returned to haunt us...Therefore, I do believe myself, that it is very possible that our first telly, or radio shows in the 1900's could have already reached other intelligent beings.

Then any message would be clear, or would one expect to ever be able to decipher any communication, or craft a receiver, the way we hear, or process sound waves would not necessarily be the "standard physics" to any other bio mass.

Sci fi speculation is nothing more then sci-fi speculation. What application is there for hitting some extraterrestrial signal.. I feel some people look to extra terrestrial to hearld a new era, sort of a galatic second coming. One message is some how going to answer all mysteries that people want so much to be mysteries, a week after aliens landed, or even communicated with earth, people would disregard, or seek to discredit the aliens address( especially if it doesn't jive with the sensational expectation, instant planetary
Bliss.. "Awww thank you aliens.. We never could have done it without you.. "

I wish I could plot a good alien communication cult., I could use the money.. How much do you think you could charge a person to listen to, and then listen to an interpretation of alien gibberish?

*Chuckles* Uh oh, looks like another "faked moon landing". Whats next, a Reagan robot?

yeah, I could see it happening now, front page news...E.T. has finally landed, where's our door prize? Phazers set to stun audiences world wide, bug zappers are yesterdays news.

Religious fiends would have a guaranteed field day over the intergalactic politics....Extra-Celestial vs Terestial debates to include ALL forms of life.

Entropy is progressive , any large catalysm will set fanatic people ( with sensational expectations) into a frenzy.

Perhaps a signal already was received, and it said, "on our planet..property
Is equally distributed.

We can barely communicate with other countries, what interst would we be to a bio organism from a distant galery, think how long it would take them, how deteriorated their mission becomes, for communication, what one message would they send? Would they send an Alphabet first, what would we send back? Some say a math eqation.. Robert Forward has won me to the Chela , in "Dragon Egg". Out side of the commonly accepted probability
Of life.. Bioorganisms existing on farther planatary systems, in distant galeries, that is staggering enough for me, and most of my friends, yet then some fringist presses the envelope.. Now it's not so "uncomprehendable" as .. What if they tried to communicate with us, SETI (gobbled up grants)
So people say they believe would they put tax money up to send a guidance beacon, or would they allow their family tested to determine if aliens have intermingled with our stock?

Yes, I'm going to break the thread with a giant picture. It's important to keep it at this size:

This will give you an idea of just how large the Universe is. The Hubble Deep Field image is a picture taken of apparently empty space. There are easily 10,000 individual galaxies in this picture, and they are millions to billions of light years apart. Try to fathom the idea of communicating with an alien race from one of these galaxies, when it takes light longer than the current age of the earth to travel from here to there. Factor in the fact that the Universe is still expanding, and the time it takes becomes even longer.

So far, we just don't have the technology to send or receive signals over such a mind-bogglingly vast distance. Hell, it takes light 8 minutes (I think) to reach Earth from the Sun. Unless an alien race has discovered a way to send information more quickly than light (essentially, it would have to involve quantum entanglement, as I said earlier), then it is impossible to communicate with them over such distances. Just imagine what we could learn from such an advanced civilization, though. Especially if they've mastered such advanced and puzzling concepts.

I think – no, I’m pretty sure - that I’ve been cybering with an alien. Our communication is standard human sexual gibberish, but in the full flush of cyber heat he’ll say something like, “Dapple me hard, baby!” The dapple thing kind of threw me at first, I mean wtf? We’re talking wet love in impossible positions and he wants to “dapple me with hard pinpoints of pulsating light?” I went with the flow, you have to sometimes, I mean we’re talking keyboards in the night, words flowing across space, no meaningful eye contact. He could be anyone, so I cut him some slack, go with the dapple, and weird thing, after a while I start to feel it, and it’s like oh yeah sweetie, dap it here and here and here . . .

How vunerable would any messages be to interpretation, it always seems that aliens contact self professed scientist ( ones that never cemented their course requirments) the ones that create notional fields to "research".

So even if aliens sent a message to "jump start" our planet in some universal advancement, would we ( the average human) accept it at face. Value, or write stuff into it? Look at the many interpretation if any holy text, then consider the question.

Far from being a deep thought. Regardless, there are too many opportunities in the Universe for other life to turn around and state we are the only ones out there with heightened intelligence.

The odds are a lot more in favor of other intelligent life than not.

ET's, if they are out there don't have same communication, they have thought powers and can read minds. Radio and tv waves are so low band for them i believe they have a portal zoom in and out we have one here in our system a black hole and scientists think there are a lot more out there .
We do not know what or if anything could live if they went into one but if they did go in they definitely could not come back.
So is like a phone with a send but no recieve.
Unless when you go into one you come out the other.
Then would be a phone because you could send things in and would come out other side in less time than a phone.

"ET's, if they are out there don't have same communication, they have thought powers and can read minds."

What gives you the impression that anyone, ET or not, can read minds? No matter how advanced their technology, it may be impossible to ever read a person's individual thoughts - a process which involves the firing of thousands of individual neurons. That is on top of the fact that people don't think in concrete, distinct sentences. Thought is a mixture of images, words, emotions, etc. Even if it were possible to one day read a person's thoughts, whether through psychic (HA!) or technological means, it would likely be about as maddening to interpret them as it is to interpret one's dreams!

"Radio and tv waves are so low band for them i believe they have a portal zoom in and out we have one here in our system a black hole and scientists think there are a lot more out there ."

Astrophysicists think there are Super-massive Black Holes at the center of every galaxy. It is still hypothetical whether or not there is or ever could be an "out" side to a Black Hole, but our current understanding of them leads one to believe that there is only a superdense mass at the center, and not a portal of any sort. Whether or not these can be used to "zoom in" on our transmissions, it would still take radio waves 25,000-27,000 years to reach the center of our galaxy. That is even if they can travel unimpeded by all the stars and planets between here and there. Then of course there's the smearing effect when something travels into a Black Hole (this is only confirmed mathematically; we've never observed something traveling into a Black Hole). What would become of our radio transmissions when distorted by such powerful gravity?

"Then would be a phone because you could send things in and would come out other side in less time than a phone."

Yes, if it were a portal, one could conceivably send information in and have it come out the other side like a phone, but you're forgetting the distortion of time associated with such intense gravity. Stephen Hawking has written extensively on what would happen once something crosses the event horizon. It would take an eternity (literally) for something to reach the center of a Black Hole, let alone exit the hypothetical "other side."

With no deeper meaning, the universe is already quite fascinating, such a devotion from those who want some metaphysical (unknown) an "Unknown" that can be comprehended through some esoteric means. Stating absolute "possibilities" is imagination, nothing more. If anything is possible, then anything imaginable is valid, yet still people will dismiss others speculations. Speculate all one wants, but accept that some are quite satisfied with a non-sensational concept of the universe, based on actual observations, and presented in documentation.
