Magic is an individual action, undertaken because the cosmos is not believed to be benevolent by nature, or at least not benevolent enough to that person.
May Deren, Divine Horsemen The living Gods of Haiti London 1953
Magic spells stem from the observation and consideration of an Earthly paradox, Earth is beautiful, full of power and promise. Yet despite all that potential for fulfillment and happiness, individual existence is too often harsh, hungry, painful, limited, bitter, dangerous, and just plain miserable , yes life holds promise, but will your promise be fulfilled> Can you depend upon benevolent forces of the universe to provide your needs and desires for you , or is further action required?

Magic is the control of the outside forces that encircle the universe. Magick is normally spelled with a k, but Samual Mathers the head the The Golden dawn secret society beleived that magick is the Science of the control of the secret forces of nature. The magician can control the the forces of nature by taking possesion of the energies that is created.

Spelling magic with a K has only been around since the early 20th Century. It was not used before and not accepted as a spelling by all practitioners such as those who practice Chaosmagic. It is only used to distinguish between stage magic and paranormal magick. The same as vampire and vampyre by those who wish to use that spelling difference.

Magick to me is the ability to form an idea and put it into motion by affecting and changing one's reality in such a way to get a specific outcome. In a sense it is a directed manipulation of causal energy. Therefore manifesting desire by whatever means your unconcious mind will accept with or without theurgy.

Everyone has varying ideas on what it is. The circles I ran with do not use black and white to describe magick either. It is believed to be an illusion of the physical plane. Most who are involved with religio/magical systems use those representations or lean toward alchemy. Most practice according to the alchemist, gray magick...you aren't either black or white. I don't believe in the intent type of thing. One has to be careful about their thoughts and how they put them into motion whether trying to help or not because it can be merely be meddling with the powers that be. Other than that I have nothing else to say. Read Anton Channing's books. I think he is a genius. I know him casually and I have to say he is an amazing and interesting person. He is associated with Jaq D. Hawkins who is also a magickian of note.

well. i have read (as i am sure that many of you have) that humans supposedly utilize only perhaps a fifth of our intellect. i think so much of what humans do NOT use is of the shall-we-say "above intellect" abilities, or "beyond" things of a logical/scientific/mathematical nature.

i don't call this Magick or Wicca or whatever some people might. i don't like labels in a general sense. nor do i believe in defined "concepts" such as spells, witches, etc

WHAT I DO BELIEVE IN is that the 80% or so of our brains we do not use largely involves ABILITIES. natural abilities of a supernatural context such as visions, communication with spirits, protective shells, extraordinary compassion, healing, influence over others, connection to nature, perhaps even things like scrambling of electronic machinary or the ability to locate a missing object.

I DO NOT BELIEVE in absurd and scientifically impossible things like teleporting, changing into the form of animals, flight, immortality, etc.

some form of "magic" for lack of a better label, is within us all to make use of if we find it... there is much we have lost as man has become "evolved" into the stupid brutes we are now... with our new external organs such as guns and television sets. we well may have lost what we once had more commonly understood and used...

Those who profess so much, apply what they profess so little. To me it is in application. Intent, and investment. As in most occult matters one must figure that ( whether one believes or not) in the " origin nature" of magic,
Is that if "If" it is as believed that it can be abused, even if a person is assured it is nothing more then physical manipulation to create interpretible illusions, those who mingle with people who profess should be educated as to basics signs of abuse, or suspect social pretenses. For any ritual, mystic, or
Not.

I hate to disagree with one statement but I need to because it's a fallacy that many believe. I posted this article in my ezine (portion with a link) in one issue and am only going to post a portion of it here that pertains to what was mentioned.

Excerpt from and article entitled:

Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe

"Dr. Vreeman and Dr. Carroll also explored the popular belief that we use only 10 percent of our brains. Frequently cited by everyone from physicians to comedians (Jerry Seinfeld) and erroneously credited to Albert Einstein, the authors found that there are a lot of ways to disprove this belief. MRI scans, PET scans and other imaging studies show no dormant areas of the brain, and even viewing individual neurons or cells reveals no inactive areas of the brain. Metabolic studies of how brain cells process chemicals show no nonfunctioning areas.

Dr. Carroll and Dr. Vreeman think this myth probably originated with self improvement experts in the early 1900s who wanted to convince people that they had yet not reached their full potential. With the help of these self proclaimed experts (perhaps the descendents of snake oil salesmen), one could tap into the 90 percent of the brain supposedly not being used."

They were successful it would appear. Much of magick was associated in the past with religious beliefs and shamanism or the mystical side of a religion such as the Kaballa (spelled a number of ways). Each believe in their own method of getting from point A to point B. Because of this, there really isn't one formula for magick, it is what you believe will work when you get right down to it. Many have to have ceremonies and rituals. Some have days and signs of the moon and colors of candles and the list goes on. Others like me like it simple and to the point so I create sigils I charge. Not going to say much more than that. Sometimes I use mantras. It is all in what one thinks will work. If you are a chaosmagic practitioner, lol...anything goes almost. Many are trying to reach their higher consciousness, whatever they perceive this to be. There are a myriad of magickal systems let alone religions that incorporate magick in some form, that it is a very big subject to broach and say what it is really. I gave my best viewpoint. I believe and this is just my opinion that magick is very personal and needs to be done by the person who is wanting whatever it is they are seeking and not look for someone else to do the magickal working. I don't think it works that way in my opinion except global things like "world peace", lol...doesn't look like that is working well. If you wanted to get really out there you could say prayer is a form of magick where one is asking for something to manifest.

I think magick only works for those who beleive in magick. You must get deep down into your consciousness to use magick and to manifest those powers. I think every god and goddess has a different purpose for certain powers you possess from them. The forces from these gods and goddeses must be outside forces in the cosmos. The magician must draw in those external forces, and uses them as the source of power on Earth. I think magick only works at a conscious level.

There was a French Scholer Christian Jacq, and he beleived that magick is the forces that encircles the cosmos. He said "magick is the essential energy which circulates in the Universe of the Gods".

Different gods and goddesses have different purposes, so the magick would only work at a conscious level, because the magician wants to control those forces of nature by bringing them into this world and use them to enhance himself or herself. If the forces encircle the cosmos, the magician will contact them and summon them, so the magican will get close to the gods, and possess those powers into themselves. Different gods and goddesses have certain powers assiociaied with them in the cosmos. The magician will summon certain gods depending on what power they want to manifest.

I believe I will find a thousand dollars where I sleep tonight.

I believe I will find two tickets to Tahiti on the table at the library.

I believe that most people think magic is something more than illusions crafted to be interpreted by people who actually believe it is something supernatural.

I believe if they opened their eyes they would see other then what their open minds are so cluttered with.

I believe people can expand their minds, and actually learn applicable things.

I believe to many Believers are afraid to acknowledge that not all skeptics have never believed.

I believe the reason for this is simple.

Dab, you always stop yourself short, just before you go for the slam-dunk! I'll step in for the assist:

At heart, I'm a cynic who thinks that Magic is merely an illusion, sometimes used by artists to separate you from your better judgment. And, sometimes; your money.

Surprised not to have seen this yet.

The ability to fall in love is magic.
A women with child/a child being born is magic.
Nature itself is magic.
Everything within itself is magic. Life, love, birth, death, existence. It's all magic.

what a person chooses to call magic depends wholly on their perspective and level of belief in their own ability to manipulate time, space and the physical. about 95% of it is purely psychological. that is to say...in their mind.

It's the belief of those who cannot explain things that certain natural phenomena and otherwise normal occurrences are magic. I believe in the existence of such, however I'm skeptical at the same time.

Is magic the concepts we see in Tv with wizards and witches casting spells? I think Not.

I shall side with MBk on this aspect of magic, that everything in life that we consider beusty and life, is the basic magic of life. A child beging born perfect example. A night sunset over the mountains. etc.

Magic is life and what we hold precious to our own life.

Magic is something we can not understand*ponders* in essence on a few things yet magic in every day life does in terms exist and we know the basic workings of the magic.

Yet I think the post is believing in magic or the illusion of magic. said it right there an illusion to cover up the real workigs of something. Magic like illusionist.

Spells and such i have not really worked with them and i have to step back to say or think in my mind would a spell work. From magic or the actions of the one doing the spell. more on actions than the spell i think.yet My knowledge of this to drum out a logical response on it.

Majika is in the heart of ones knowledge and beliefs. Majik should not be confused with incantaion rites that are Governed by external forces that control the balance of our universe.
If you failed in majik, then majik has not failed you, but you of knowledge required in performing it in truth.

I'm not entirely sur ehwat magic is or isn't but the fact is that every myth and story is based upon a grain of the truth just like vampires or werewolfs, people are creatuve, but we're not that creative, so somewhere magic must have existed and maybe still does exist. Honestly would you want to be hunted and martyred just because you had special abilities?

The ability to feel is one of the best examples of magic that exists.

We can feel joy, sorrow, anger, pain, pleasure, and so much more.

The fact that we can feel is what differentiates us from everything else. The fact that the ability to feel can be caused by an outside force or for no reason at all is within itself magical.

Hmm... MBK/Images

These are all things many people use as proofs of the existance of G. that those who do not believe in a creator would not concider magical at all.

But I agree...

except that I prefer to think of Magic as: Spiritual Laws and their physical counterparts which science cannot fathom because of it's frequent denial that there are no spiritual laws.

This is an article from my journal that I wrote a year ago, which explains the truth of what 'magic' is. Here...

I was thinking last night before I fell asleep about human potential, with our amazing minds.
We find ourselves able to do things if we firmly believe we can do them, or things will happen to our bodies if we are convinced enough that they will happen. A pill taken as a placebo for example. I give you a harmless sugar pill and later tell you that it was poison... what happens? You begin to feel sick. You panic. Why does your stomache suddenly hurt, you're dizzy, your mouth tastes funny, you feel nauseus, you're convinced that you've been poisoned. The things we tell ourselves make enormous impacts on ourselves and our lives. I could go on about this, but that's not what this article is about.
For centuries people have been making magic. Performing rituals with candles, incense, daggers, herbs, but the most important ingredient has always been belief. Have you ever done a spell and had it fail, because you did not truly believe that it would work, that by performing this spell, you would yield some sort of result?

I think perhaps magical ritual too is a placebo, an action taken that helps us believe that our wills will come to be. We feel like we need confirmation of things before we are certain they will work, and by performing a spell, we feel we have done something... created an action that will cause an effect. But if one was to strip away the candles, incense, daggers and herbs, they are left with a person's will and belief. I think humans have the power to create the effect than any spell would have, without the rituals, but simply by using our minds effectively.

As humans, we are omnipotent. Perhaps not completely, but we are in the sense that there is little limitation in what we can potentially achieve. People believe themselves gifted with various things, like the ability to read minds. I think that in truth, everyone can read minds, but most people have a mental block which prevents them from having enough belief in this that it will actually work. They often feel like they must do something first in order to activate this gift, like meditate, or place a crystal upon the third eye, etc. Activation is not necessary, it merely helps strengthen our belief that it will work. Humans are capable of far more than we think. So perhaps we can all do 'magic', except that it is not magic at all, it is a natural thing within us, part of our own minds, all we have to do is believe in ourselves.

The difference between omnipotent and sort of potent *laughs* would be that humans have not the ability to create. We can modify, extrapolate, discover, change, influence our environement, &c. but we cannot create.
That would be real magic.

Had to steal some of the message above as to answer it. They say we do not have the ability to create, but that is not true. We create life and new things everyday. How about the computer you are on someone had to create it.

The magick is in all it is just whether you believe in it or not that is all.The power and strength is in all, but the belief in oneself is the downfall, because most people do not believe in themselves. I think alot of that is the way we are taught do to our scientific minds, but what happens if you taught differently from birth? Could you reprogram yourself and change your lives and better them through belief ?

All magick is is will ,energy and belief.

You have mistaken procreation and discovery for creation. Creation (Evocation) has to be from nothing, or it is transmutation. Even changing energy to matter using thought (sort of like shrodinger cat) is not creation.

Computers are not created, they are the application of principles that we have discoverd. Principles that WE did not create.

Also, the mind is not really all that scientific. Science is a method for explaining the material world. The mind is not even a material thing, the brain is.

As far as I am concerned, the brain is like a funnel. The mind has relatively infinate directions of thought, beyond space and time and other material things, the brain simply keeps us from getting distracted from too many things that are not material.
