Many of you probably read in the recent news that Disney is buying Marvel. What are your thoughts on this? Good, bad, indifferent?

Abstract mentioned this in House Eternal, and I gave this response:

Yeah, I think it is cool and have reservations. I love Disney as I worked for the company from 1990-1992... but Marvel has some pretty racy material too. And I hope this doesn't put a halt to new movies and staying true to the raciness of those stories due to the wholesomeness of Disney.

Is that a valid concern? Or do you think Disney will just let other production companies create those films? Maybe there'd still be problems due to its affiliation rather it makes the films or not. There are in fact Marvel movies with intense scenes, for instance, 'Man-Thing'... have to use that example as it stars our fave TV vamp Alex O'Loughlin aka Mick St John :P That was an Australian production with an Aussie cast using American accents, and the opening scene is straight out of an 80s horror flick- complete with the boob shots- then blood.

So my question is, how does Marvel keep its integrity under Disney? Is this even an issue? Pun intended... 'comics', 'issues'. *badum pum- wah wah wah, sorry, lame to the max*

*edit* I just answered my question reading over the list online of other production companies owned by Disney that do produce rated R movies. So no reason to disagree with the original thought, I've already disagreed with myself ;)... And no reason to squash the thread either... it's still valid and popular news in the comic world right now, and it would be awesome to hear of any thoughts and concerns you may have about this combo.

i don't know about this at all.

we will just have to see what happens.

but also.... disney's stock to a nose dive after this was announced.

As soon as Disney never touches 'Mortal Kombat' franchise ( Midway Games; Inc.), I can remain ignorant to this cause. As for Marvel; I believe Disney will just own the incomings that the developers produce out of the arts, it will have no affiliation with the company fines, I suspect; as many other annexed companies and incorporations; although I can see new improvements as well as attractions in Disney worlds as extension of this resolution.

Disney already stated today that they will continue to go along with what Marvel had mapped out for the upcoming movies.

What I am interested to see if they add any Marvel characters to upcoming Kingdom Hearts games.

The difference between DC using Warner Bros to make movies and what is happening here is that DC still owns the rights to the story and characters. For example, Warner Brothers may make a Batman movie. But DC Comics usually has a huge say in what happens.

Marvel really has no say anymore. Marvel and Disney are the same people now. So if they want to make Ironman have fluffy pink ears, they can do that. (Even though that would be incredibly retarded looking)

I am very interested to see what happens.

You guys have brought up some cool points... like the possiblity of introducing the comic book heroes to the theme parks and video games such as Kingdom of Hearts- that would be interesting... and not too far fetched- as they had 'Star Tours' for years at Disneyland, a ride based on George Lucas' Star Wars movies- and we all know they weren't Disney films.

Now check that out, that entire paragraph above was a massive run-on sentence. RAWK!

(Yeah, the run on sentences I seem to frequent alot. HA!)

It would be a bit of fresh air to see some new sites within the Disney complex's. Even if I have never been to any of them (save for when I was very little) to enjoy their atmosphere.

The Spidey Slide next to Splash Mountain... could be a good concept.

If it wasn't for the money that comic movies has been making,Disney wouldn't have bothered otherwise.I think it is as bad as any big company buying out other companies to be a MEGA corp.

I don't see the bad in it, really. What do we get out of all this: entertainment, right? Disney is truly known for entertainment. I don't see how we as fans lose in this deal, some people don't care for either company in the first place and I do 'get' what they are saying even if I don't necessarily agree (can't get political in the main forum). Marvel wasn't a home-based business anyway, it was 'mega' in its field. 4 billion dollars for the whole shabang is proof of that.

But you know... it's cool if you don't like the idea for whatever reason you feel it's not a good one.

But think of the cross-over possibilities in movies and in comics.

Wolverine vs. Goofy
The X-men Playhouse
Mulan vs. She-Hulk
The Uncanny Mouse-cateers
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves vs. Senator Trask and the Anti-mutant League.

It could be interesting. Imagine what Magneto would do if he had access to a spellbook. Whoa!

Disney needs an imagineer like you, Undone!

Disney will have one more bit of input into America's primary output - the media. Our films and music are our primary diplomacy, how the world perceives us. Could be worse.

hahaha! i'd like to see some of those ;]

Disney has lost it's own power, we saw that with Pixar.. films it puts out with other franchises or ones it absorbs do so much better than films Disney does on it's own. Chicken Little vs. Finding Nemo... Brother Bear vs. Toy Story. In fact, i believe Chicken Little was the deciding factor on if they bought Pixar or not. anyway, with the making of all these superhero films, that do really well, it's no surprise that they looked to purchase one of the key superhero sources. i don't think it changes too much, it really just depends on how much certain people want to dip their fingers into the Marvel pie.

I think it's horrific and it worries me. Disney is not what it once was. Disney used to stand for something. They used to put out movies and television shows with substance and good family fun. Now it's mind rotting crap.

Disney and marvel have worked closely together berore. If I remember correctly, disney owns Hasbro, which owns Wizards of the Coast, which owns Dungeons and Dragons and a Variety of collectable card games.

I'm amused that Disney owns so much... At times I wonder if they intend to own everything. Who knows... they may own everything already, and are just reorganizing.

Oh... and as Hasbro bought out Toy Biz which was the original maker of Marvel toys; Disney already owns the action figures and much of the marketing for marvel.

Bloodmother, sounds like you are familiar with Disney. I remember the 'imagineerist' section of the company. I worked there for 2 years as a teenager, but I did a 15 week work experience program there first, where we studied the company in depth while working in foods, merchandising, and attractions (5 weeks each with classroom on Mondays).

Due to what I learned even way back then (nearly 20 years ago), I'm pretty confident they aren't going to run Marvel into the ground.

Other production companies owned by Disney:

* Touchstone Pictures
*Hollywood Pictures
*ImageMovers Digital
*Miramax Films (Quentin Tarantino films, and tons more)
*DreamWorks (Gladiator, Lemony Snickett, American Beauty, Saving Private Ryan, Meet the Parents)
*Pixar Animation Studios

And let us not forget the amazing Hayao Miyazaki films produced with Disney:

*Spirited Away
*Howl's Moving Castle
*Princess Mononoke
*Kiki's Delivery Service
...and more

Some of the most celebrated films of all time. They aren't everyone's cup of tea... but I have adored so many of them. But with all these examples, I am not sure how fans of Marvel could come to the conclusion that the films of its future will have anything less than good. If you didn't like these to begin with, that's a different story.

I was just going to mention some of the affiliate companies that Disney owns and was going to list some of the more "racier", mature and and non-family group of movies that Miramax and Touchstone put out.

DJJarak: The world is a changing. When I was a kid, I only had access to 10 TV Channels at the most, and Walt Disney was a great favourite of all Families on Sunday evenings. But, the world is not all Cinderalla and Sleeping Beauty stories any more; Disney has had to move with the times and expand in order to survive. If I remember correctly, there was even a big todoo when Disney annouced it was putting out "Pirates of the Caribbean", as it was not the typical Disney movie and too scary for children. And look how well it did.

Anyway, in response to your question--I see no problem with Disney is buying Marvel.

An interesting littlle tidbit:

"Disney bought Marvel because little boys don't ask ttheir parents to buy Disney-licensed merchandise the way little girls get theirs to buy whichever latest product has a Hannah Montana or High School Musical logo on it."

What a bunch of crap....now Disney will edit everything good in the marvel universe.

Here is 3 good reasons why.

No more flames for ghost rider.May make kids want to start fires.

No more wolverine smoking cigars.Parents will complain about children seeing the smoking.

No more voluptuous big breasted women in the comics. That would be considered sexist and adult oriented.

What a shame......Marvel screwed the pooch on this one.

Disney didn't cut any corners in any Quentin Tarantino movies... what makes you think they will with Marvel? They own the company, but I'm sure it'll be produced under Marvel studios, just as Miramax (owned by Disney) still produced under their company name.

This is why I immediately disagreed with my initial thoughts. I jumped the gun on that assumption. I kept reading after I made this thread and realized it was of no concern.

Booooo, Marvel shouldn't have sold out!
Disney can't compete for the mighty green back Buck and theaters against Marvel, so now they own it lock stock and barrel of bucks!

Now our childhood Marvels will be turned into Disney glory prancies for the littleones to eat up in cartoon fantasy land.

They couldn't buy out Pixtar Ent. so they went after Marvel.
Isn't that like monoply?

In June 2007, Walt Disney Studios entered into an exclusive multi-year first look deal with Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment. "It's like the realization of a dream. Ever since I was a young boy, Disney represented the best and most exciting film fare to me. ... I look forward with indescribable enthusiasm to being a part of that world and contributing whatever I can to keep the legend alive and growing," said Lee. -Wikipedia

So there's Stan's feelings about Disney. If he felt that way about them 2 years ago, he probably still has the same confidence in them actually buying Marvel now (a company he doesn't own, by the way).
