What myths, fables whatever you want to call them do you believe are true? False? Indifferent?
I believe that the Mothman, Jersey Devil, Bigfoot cases to be true.
I believe that the misconception myths to be false. Every single one of them.
I am indifferent on the Lizzie Borden case. It could be true but it could also be false.
What are your thoughts/opinions?
I wouldn't call Lizzie Borden a myth. She was a real person.
I have never heard of any Jersey Devil. I can say I have saw with my own eyes what I believe to have been a creature who resembles the creature of Big Foot lore. I also have met one other person since who has told me of seeing something similar to what I saw.
theres a japanese myth that if you close your eyes when you wash your hair ghost/spirits are watching you.
i believe this one and now i always have my eyes open LOL
What I had been trying to say danzig is the myth surrounding the case of Lizzie Borden. I know that she was a real person but i do not believe the things surrounding the case itself.
There is a myth, that if you make a pentagram in a piece of paper and put it under your pillow before bed, you will go to places that are not that wonderful.
Info only: Lizzie Andrew Borden[2] (July 19, 1860 – June 1, 1927) was a New England spinster who was the central figure in the hatchet murders of her father and stepmother on August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts in the United States. The murders, subsequent trial, and following trial by media became a cause célèbre. The fame of the incident has endured in American pop culture and criminology. Although Lizzie Borden was acquitted, no one else was ever arrested or tried, and she has remained notorious in American folklore. Dispute over the identity of the killer or killers continues to this day.
The Myths I've heard about the Lizzie Borden case are that her ghost and the ghost's of her parents are frequently seen in the Borden house.
My kids came home with the 'bloody mary' thing awhile back and they were scared. After getting them to do it while I was standing there, they got over it pretty quick though. Many myths are based on heresay and conjecture. Hell, even my own mythos was contrived by incorporating various other gods into the currently in vogue pantheon, so there is that.
Now cryptozoology is pretty cool and has some basis of fact on some accounts, big foot, nessie et al. So there is a rational reason there. The things dealing with faith or superstition, though, are another matter all together, IMO.
As far a believing they exist...I do in some of them. For instance Krackens (sp?). I think there really are gigantic squid that at one time had attacked ships or boats and then were recorded as larger than they were (body wise) to gain some reason or another. Big foot I think is real too. There are too many accounts of it around the globe to reasonably expect a hoax. Crop circles? Nah, hoax. Nessie? Maybe, it is possible but unlikely. But that is my take anyway.
It appears some are getting Urban lagends, Myths, and superstitions mixed up.
Even a bit of tabloid Press in there.
Lizzy Borden Was Aquitted. But she had already been found guilty, by popular opinion ( gossip).
There is nothing Mythical about Lizzy Borden.
Most Urban lagends, Myths, Superstitions and internet chain letters do have a grain of truth behind them, but need to be taken with a grain of salt, a slice of lime and a shot of tequila.
In short they are what you make of them.
Most people want the whole package, while a fraction (a small fraction) of urban legends are supported by actual occurances, they are still very embellished, and often relocated for local effect.
Those who seek to be astonished, or to astonish others, want to be the person who's next door neighbors.. aunt .. was the person to witness the event.. or to have an account.
Cryptozoologist just recently got played by their beliefs, to the toon of 75'000 bucks.
People get it backwards, as if every urban legend is real, and a percent are Tall tales, and Campfires. such people are offended when their attempt to astonish.. and perhaps scare others is foiled.
Myths, are historical Lore, based on attempts to personify the weather, geological events, and even the occasional mechanically animated statues.
If a person cam into a remote area, with say.. flint, and steal, and took a bunch of brush, and flicked from their hands, and ignited the brush.. WOW.. DID YOU JUST SEE THAT!!!!!
A Village would be retelling that for months to come, and since often Oral Tradition was the media of the times.. such stories lingered, often until someone scribed them, and perhaps even embelished, or adapted the story to place them in a higher social standing.
it takes little investigation to research the merit of Urban legends, and even as people that are convinced that they actually hold water read exposes that make it clear there is not supporting accounts of such events they persist to perpetuate the urban Legends, and Myths.
Well hell, if we are going to be speaking about believable myths, then I would like to enter into the myth of the Authurian myths pertaining to Merlin, Nimue (lady of the lake), the grail quest and avalon.
Who is to say that these figures were untrue from a historic point of view?
I always heard something growing up that if you put a cup of water with salt under your bed while you sleep the spirits would go into the water and in the morning you dispose of the water. I'm not sure how true it is but I believe it's an old santeria thing.
According to some psychics, myself included... If an individual puts dice inside an upside down solid color cup snake eyes, if there is a haunting inside the domicile, it will have changed the dice by morning. Must put the dice at midnight, or it may not work.
But is that myth?
I often wonder about Merlin, even if he was not a mystic, he knew some form of craft, and left an impression upon many, enough to be a resounding figure in Lore.
As well as the Isle of Avalon, oft times rumoured to be a doorway into another dimension, as well as claimed as other names such as Shamballa and Shangri La.
Those myths that spore into other cultures, those are the most compelling.
My favorite Figure (by he one or many) is Koko Phalia.
I have a great interest in Myths, Fables and Legends.
Merlin the drunk, Merlin the prophet or Merlin the magician, known to of been born in Carmarthan Wales. I love storys about this bloke, there are so many.
My thoughts on them are that they may be simularities to actual events which took place. Looking through old history books and Legends I have come across many which remind me of the this.
"Crop circles? Nah, hoax."
Most? Yes.But perhaps the ones that show evidence of molecular changes are simply cymatic patterns caused by water below the surface and present in the wheat medium ..like the Kraken( I also believe were giant squid) etc.. are probably real to begin withe but along the line take on a quality that is a bit too fantastic.
Peeps exaderate alot.
most fables or legends contain a small amount of truth.
like bigfoot, or yeti
I kinda think bigfoot is just a really hairy nomad. But Ive never seen him (or her) so this is really just a guess
Anything is certainly possible.
Never count anything out until it's proven otherwise.
