What do you feel about the idea that with each action, or possible inaction, the ramification of which may lead to an alternate future, wherein said action had been carried through, or not.. as the case may be?
In effect, do you believe in the idea of possible realities, other than ours, that run parallel, to this one??
hawking postulates that there are infinite realities. for instance were i to go back in time in a machine and kill my granddad before my dad was born, i wouldnt just wink out. instead that action would generate an alternate timeline in which i was never born. i would still exist there as i am a product of my own timeline.
yes...it can cause headaches lol.
that said, i see no reason to believe that we cannot have multiple selves. i wonder if we ever experience any of the things our doppleganger experiences?
~W~
You're speaking of Einsteins grandfather theory.
Basically it is this...if you traveled back in time and accidentally kill your grand father, you would never be born.Though if you killed him,you would never have been born to travel back in time to kill him. That is the paradox of time travel.
Alternate realities is a bit different theory. It is when every choice you make has different outcomes.Should I cross on the light and get hit or wait and then cross.Ever choice you make has a consequence to it.Take the Time Machine re-make.He loses the love of his life and works on making a time machine so he can go back and save her.Every time he goes back to the night she dies,he still loses her in different ways. It's not until he goes 10,000 yrs into the future that he realizes that if she didn't die,he never would have built the machine.
Alternate realities is a theory that I hold dear to my heart as well as time travel.I do think and believe that alternate realties do exist.
Alternate realities would be regarded as multi-dimensional universes of the self. Take one American Monk, Mr. Burt Goldman. His hypothesis alludes to a jumping into parralel dimensions in order to gain skills, wisdom, etc. from your alternate selves. He calls it Quantum Jumping.
I would do some research on this guy either from youtube, or other internet sites. He does add quite the fascinating take on the whole alternate reality theory.
If you have seen the TV show Sliders, that to me explains alternate realities to a T.
Totally, but Burts theory is that the alternate realities of the self, could be conjuncted into the single individual which is the ultimate self. He theorizes that once a certain "practice" has been introduced into the mind in what I believe is hypnotic suggestion, then the self could ultimately communicate with those alternate selfs in order to better the individuals life in general, as well as learn things that those alternate selves have already learned in their dimensions. Basically calling forth the Jet Li movie: The One. This to me, in a nutshell is the Sliders version of Alternate Self combining.
Yes I saw The One.
I have a theory myself....that dreams aren't just ways for the mind to deal with the stresses of the day but our minds seeing what is going on in another reality.Seeing what other versions of ourselves do in that reality.
Now that I can agree wtih, who is to say that parts of the ethereal are not conjuncted with our alternate selves paths? It is a very good concept that I could easily work with. Too bad control only lasts for a short while, and we cannot actually communicate with ourselves through the dream since it, in theory, seen through their eyes.
I do believe in alternate realities that somewhere in another reality I am living differently or doing things I chose not to do.
I was a huge fan of sliders myself and I tend to think that that is a great example of the multiple realities that exist.
Do we believe that through the process of hypnotic suggestion, that we could tap into Burt Goldman's theory, and communicate with our alternate selves in order to change who we are?
Anything is possible,if you can open your mind to the idea of tapping into something so vast.
I've never given the idea much thought, but I would have to say no I don't believe.
DW summed up where I was going with this.. the possibility of glimpsing those alternate realities..
I'm on an alternate world and reality everytime i step into a virtual world. I have noticed that people play out their "other world" selves a little differently while others pretty much remain the same personality wise. I think if we can create such a world online, why not in THIS reality too?
It does make one think ;)
To make another reality within this reality is called roleplay at its finest. Anyone can do it.
What I think is being discussed here is actually meeting in person and face to face, your alternate selves.
True, one such paradox of this is you can't occupy or the same mass can't occupy the same space in time.Like Time Cop...if you touch your other self you will both meld and die.
I do not think that theory is relative, since time technically does not exist, save for within the mind. Time is linear, and therefore we as corporeal images on this plane could occupy the same room as our "doppleganger" from those alternate universes.
The concept of touching one another is a differant scenerio altogether.
Time is relative.
It is a theory, there is no right or wrong.Just different ideas about the topic. No one actually knows if you could meet yourself from another time or dimension,if touching yourself would be harmful or not.
Even with the theory from the movie: The One... Could it be possible to kill your alternate self and take on their knowledge via the highlander method? Something to ponder.
You never know.
Since all of it is in theory and from the mind of writers(the movies),you can think up any scenario about alternate dimensions and the possibility of what you can or can not do.
Some theories have the logic to seem believable.
and then there are also theories based on mathmatics and quantum mechanics.

I was reading through the thread and found it fascinating. I have always loved the concept of alternate realities, time travel etc. I did have a couple things that came to mind on the ideal. If indeed there are alternate realities and time lines, that we perhaps see in dreams, and then does that also mean that our soul, energy, or conscience can exist on multiple plains? Or would these splits and alternate realities give birth to new persons? What I mean is we are linked to these alternate selves somehow, but is it a part of ourselves that walks this alternate reality or is it a new life, a new soul that walks on this alternate plain? It’s a difficult concept to wrap ones mind around, but an interesting one. Does anyone have a better way of explaining this possibility in the ideal of alternate realities and our coexistence within them?
the idea of one existing in an alternate reality does fascinate me,but would that alternate reality be something of the past or the future,or is it possible it could be the present just as we are now, would this not involve then the theory of time and space
The theory of alternate realities at least from my P.O.V.,is upon the same time line as our reality but things are a bit different in them.Such as,say Kennedy didn't get assassinated in one reality and was president for 8 yrs.Elvis lived til he was 70 instead of dying in 1977.I believe that IF alternate realities do in fact exist, they are off shoots of every choice a person makes. The variables are minute and they actually exist all around us.
I do believe in parallel worlds as well as parallel universes.
UtahVamp phrased his query well. I do think we can percieve these alternate realities.. I believe this.
Nice explanation DW I have to say when I think of alternate realities that is how I percieve it myself.
Thank you,and as I said before these topics are something I have studied and thought about for a long time now.
I believe in them yes, it is an awesome concept even if they don't exist
Here is something you can think of or try.
Go back to a time in your life where you had to make the biggest decision in your life,at that time.Write down the choice you actually made, then write down the other choice you could have made.Under the choice you made, write down everything you did after that...if you can remember.
Now write down under the choice you didn't make, what you might have done. Those choices could have still played out in an alternate reality.Your life still could have been changed in that reality with those choices you could have made.
This is interesting case...
finding this need dream following is the easiest, or the meditation....
Both things start with "What do I want?"
If always wondered 'what if". What if I never became a soldier? What if I joined at a different time? What if I had chosen another MOS? What if I grew up in a functional family? What if my mother had never abandoned us?
Each 'what if' question has a different outcome, a different scenario that plays out.
I'd like to see how the other 'me's' would have turned out.
Would I be a better person in some or even worse?
What could I learn from each 'me' to better the way I am now?
Those would be my questions.
Yes..what the DarkWolfman has said is a great idea. Why is it so hard for other peoples to exept or even think of a possibility of their being an alternate reality to theirs. *fear* that's why. Because in all myth there is fact. Meaning, if there are alternate realities/ versions of ourselves, their has to be an evil side, a magick side, a human side, an oposite gender side, and the list goes on. I believe people just can't see thems selves as anything but what the 'worked so hard to be'. Hey listen we are different all of us. People outside of 'outer box believers' need to see this. We might do things that may not make us proud of, or family proud of..but none the less it is who we are. We are ourselves, wheather dark, good, black, white, purple, ect. In any reality we are still us.
I find the theory of alternate realities confusing, particularly those realities stemmed from decisions where there are varying possible outcomes...
I find this mentality a little questionable in the respect that, these decisions or events are mostly significant and pivotal in hindsight...
Are these alternate realities created only on the bigger decisions in life, and if so what constitutes as bigger?
Or are they constantly being created everytime I do something, where I could have done something else, creating mulitudes of alternate realities every moment of my life/lives?
And if we are to assume that ourselves in this reality create other alternate realities, our alternate realities in turn would be constantly creating other alternate realities...Does it just keep unfolding into "infinity?"
Good question: I'm off the belief that any action I cgoose, rather than is thrust upon me, has that possibility of an alternate future.. just my thought.
That'd be cool and I believe in the possibility of other demensions...But no. I don't think there is another me out there...At all.
I do not believe in inevitable predetermination. A person determines his or her own destiny by their actions. Fatalism is ascribed to by those who lack the ability to make decisions for themselves....
The idea of parallel realities existing simultaneously next to ours is an interesting concept, though as far as current research goes this idea still sits within the realms of science fiction.
The only reality that exists in our future is the one we create for ourselves...
It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.
Shakespeare
Instead of hypnotic suggestion, wouldn't it be better for meditation? *Some people might say both are somewhat the same*...
Take the Oblivion-4 game for a (example) - I start playing a game for a while, then I decide to start a new game, a "alternate reality"... Useing the above for a (example) -
If the alternate realities of our selves is there, why and how?
If our self can reach-to understand our alternate realities/selves, then how can the "two and more" of our selves does have the right of way - as for a nother (example) of two cars driving along the road and both cars reach a "form one lane"... Which-one of the alternate realities/selves would be 'the one' to take the lead-control?
A nother thought - (example) If there is the old'saying of: Which came first, the chicken OR the egg?...
If we have alternate realities/selves outthere in other dimentions of sorts, and if our selves born and living... The Question would be: Which "alternate realities/selves" would came first and in which/what order of our alternate realities/selves came first - IF the alternate realities/selves are a exact copy, but different life of each one of our selves is living... So how did "life-the Higher, Almighty God" knew which one of our lives-alternate realities/selves would be picked to live for the main-life for our selves.
The Oblivion game analogy was an excellent example, it is much the same as both games of Fable. Start one game, then start another with an entirely differant character persona within the game.
Much like that of dimensions... Who knows how many differant personalities I have wondering out there, one could be a psychotic killer, another a socio-path, while another still could be president of the U.S. of A.
Take life as a "choose your own adventure" book, remember those? Save for the fact that you cannot change back to the page before you die to choose the alternate route from the death itself.
LMAO... In my last post in this thread I was going to make a comparison between a choose your own adventure book and what we manifest for ourselves...
Great minds think alike.
The only reality that exists in our future is the one we create for ourselves...
It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.
Shakespeare
writes Lolita.. and, that is precisely what I was referring with this post in the first place.
One say is there
You hold the universe in your palm just you can start where you want and law of karma is constant.
coz if you are soldier now and wish to become nurse, in earlier personality you are person of act and in second you enter to get the hands on the course and become nurse. time passage will be the factor.
This is dream following and few earns victory over this dream.
By the "will" you can conquer even chaos.
Angelus,Don't you think that if these alternate selves did truly exist, they would be 100% like the us here??I doubt that highly,I think they would be off a slight fraction.
if one follows the idea of string theory [which I saw explained as a giant bun loaf] it is suggested there are eleven such dimensions, and grant you DW, you may be right.. tho the 'changes' I have "seen" weren't too great from the so-called 'orignal' .. just different.
An entire thread on The String Theory!! Now that would make for an interesting discussion.
trust you to pick up on that.
In an alternate Universe you're a .. Librarian.
I believe we have already had a thread relating to the "string theory", I would do a search for it in the archives.
I will have to have a look SoulShroud **sp**... congrats on becoming a Dominar! :D
I was simply offering suggestive advice, I am not a Dominar. Please do not allude to my being such, save the sarcasm for someone less temperamental.
i think about this all the time, if i did things differently in the past would the present be different than if i hadnt?
i think so
It is very true, every choice you make leads you to another stone on your path of life, you choose a different stone your path will be different.Like a ripple in a lake after you throw that stone.Every ripple is a choice to made. You change the size of the stone you make bigger ripples.
How would somebody from the current timeline know, if they have or not done something differently in the past to change the future.
If the present timeline is "the future" compared WITH the past, then the present timeline and all other future moments alone WITH that present timeline, then they, the somebody's future all would be frozen (Nothing moving - Just a THOUGHT-Understanding?) - Because, if a somebody was in the past-for their "current timeline" - How could THEN from that moment onwards, the future "be set OR not", if that somebody would_be_still in their "current timeline" of a past, before their future events occur.
That isn't the concept of alternate realities.
What we are saying is IF you could change something in your past that you could do over, would you and what would it be?
Also we aren't saying you would know what it was or is that was changed.because that one small change would alter the present time line to where it never happened,at least not in our own reality.
Think, Back to the Future part 2.
someone missed the point, as 'someone' so often does, as he takes umbrage at the words of others.. Lolita's allusion gave me cause for humour, as there is a causal link between the theory I'm espousing and string theory.. so somone doesn'y need to look up an alternate thread.. do they??
I have greatly enjoyed the eariler discussion of this subject as provided by DW and SS. Thank you both for furthering such an important topic with such truly cogent and thought-provoking responses. This is a topic I have also been fascinated by.
For myself, as I do believe this life is intended as a "school" of learning in preparation for the next level of our eternal progression (after all, all matter and energy has already been scientifically revealed to be eternal and can neither be created or destroyed... thus, why not life, as well?), I cannot but wonder whether each of us might exist on several different dimensions or in up to an infinite number of parallel universes at the same time... and entirely unbeknownst to ourselves in any one of them.
If Time is relative (and we know that it is... as Michelson/Morley demonstratively proved a century ago), then the entire concept of past, present and future is also relative. Perhaps this explains why matter and energy are... timeless. And perhaps also explains why life is... and why we, ourselves, are, as well. And if so, then if parallel universes do exist, then there is nothing to stop us from existing simultaneously in each of them at the same "time."
And to postulate a bit further, if this all is true, then as creatures locked into a chronological paradigm from which we cannot yet escape despite knowing that all such is relative, we are incapable of perceiving the greater Reality that truly is. The best we can do is postulate on its existence. Thus, one cannot but wonder what that greater Reality, that true perspective, might actually be.
- Upir'
einstein stated that time (like incest) is all relative. hawking agrees with that and has added to einsteins work (read "a brief history of time".
i do know i have never had (er...never will have) access to a time machine. i know this because i never appeared to myself before getting married to my exwife, for the express purpose of slapping myself.
if anyone has met theirself, please do share.
~W~
Uber-Morlock- You built your time machine because of Emma's death. If she had lived it would never have existed, so how could you use your time machine to go back and save her? You are the inescapable result of your tragedy, just as I am the inescapable result of you.
- The Time Machine
Yeah I mentioned that in an earlier post...just not the actual quote *wink*
But that is a paradox of time travel...if you could actually do it.
Every action you take causes ripples in the time line...and in the alternate reality line...it could have the same effect.
Cause and effect can be examined in foresight, we usually choose not to do this. Most of us tend to only examine what we should of done in hindsight. The human species is rash and we tend to act mainly on instinct and all most of us care about is instant gratification.
DW I had goosebumps when I read that part... felt a little dense for not realising that is is why he could not change the past though.
i was quite thick in my earlier post....
so its not the time travel/ grandfather paradox we are discussing, but
might there be other realities based on the choices we did not make?
its an interesting thought, but if we did not make that choice, how could a physical reality have been generated from it?
~W~
Well we are using the time travel paradox in the explanation of alternate realities and the many choices we make to cause these other realities.
The grandfather paradox sorta loops in on itself when you think about it.Same goes for the alternate reality theory,if you choose one path in your life, you go along that path to the next choice. So if you chose another path, you have the alternate reality of that choice.
It is possible that there are other realities that run parallel to this one. Other planes so to speak. When we die part of our soul remains here in this plane and is reincarnated and the other part moves on to another parallel dimension or wherever we go when we die.
It is kind of hard to answer otherwise in that we do not know for sure what other planes or other possible parallel realities unless one were to travel to said other realities.
I have belief, in what I know and feel.
I do believe they exist, hence the entry.
Alternate realities and selves are possibilities, indeed. One person's fantasy is another person's reality. That means that it is clearly an alternate reality. All our actions lead to a chain reaction of different actions to occur which in turn can lead to different outcomes in the end.
not quite.
it strikes me that science and, particularly 'string theory' explains much of what I read so eloquently described earlier.
I don't really know if each action has an alternate action someplace else .. or maybe in like some kinda parallel existence .. but its an interesting thought.
“In an infinite universe anything possible happens all the time…” Aye, it's a theory.
I believe in alternate realities; they exist in our minds, in our thoughts. Is a thought real?
It is only through thought that we can discuss changing the past, and the ramifications thereof.
It's arrogant to think our personal self, our minds and bodies, can exist simultaneously on multiple planes of existence, that our protoplasm is so special, so elastic, that it can be spread across the dimensional spectrum like jelly. That is, if we did things differently, a whole new set of variables would impact on our character and all of our future choices, thereby altering us, changing irrevocably that something that we thought unique in the first place. We'd be a different person contemplating what we would, or should, or could have done differently.
Alternate Realities(Parallel Universes) are a valid scientific theory that they do and can exist.
it seems some, can ascertain a Theory as Fact.
I like the Theory, yet surely that's all it is, thus far??
[[questioning head on today]]
ah but if our actions cause a negative reaction in our alternate selves and alternate realities
what then
Unless it were possible to travel between these alternate worlds,we have no effect on them or the other versions of us.We only make more splits into more alternate worlds/realities by the choices we make or do not make. Each world is independent of each other.
here's a more down to earth example.
lady has two kids to the same sperm donor.
one is brought up in Liverpool, and becomes all rufty tufty. the other, the wirral and well-spoken.
tho, they look alike. very alike.
only difference. a river.
so how's about, that choice to adopt, was that split-second decision?? for example...
Angelus, you kinda wondered off the path of the thread. In which you yourself started. They are twins, even though identical in many ways...but not the same person or a version of the same person. The thread is about alternate worlds/selves...not twins in the same world/reality.Many twins who were separated at birth have often grown up to marry women with the same names...drive the same cars and/or work the same kinda jobs.
I personally think that every action we have has caused us to be where we are today. Now I do not believe there is an alternate reality out there of us living the same lives and doing the opposite of our actions held here in this reality.
I believe in the here and now, the past and present. I believe in the future of things to come.
absolutly...each action no matter how small contributes to every other action. there are a large number of events in my life that have changed my life that happened due to something small...in one case, it had to do with the moment i sneezed. that lead to someone "blessing" me, causing a conversation, causing me to move to a different town to start a band, which let me meet several people that became close friends (two of which were introduced to each other by me, and they have a child)...you get the idea. so at least one child was born because i sneezed in a mall.
strange when you think of it.
~W~
As far as I`m concerned, every day and situation is an alternate reality.
Reality id far more than subjective, it is what each person perceives through his/her perspective. This perspective is learned/created throughout life, by every experience, interaction and environment one has contact with.
So I can say I have an alternate self each and every moment, according to the alternate reality I find myself in at that specific moment.
fair comment DW.. I was being analogous.
Dianna... sussed.
I do believe that there are alternate realities and am curious as to finding one. I believe i have found people from some at times.
lol
this started from several experiences, wherein I saw versions of a future that were different from that of the timeline I exist within.
