The evil eye has its roots deep in mankind's history. It has been said "A look can kill" "The man has Xray eyes" and "He looked right through me"Alot of people thruout the world fear the evil eye.
My question is why the eye? Do you feel it stems from the belief that the eyes are the window to the soul? And if you believe that, why?
Can you offer other explainations?
There is even a guy who claims he can shoot lasers out of his eyes!
There is a culture that weaves little mirror like disc into their clothing to counter " the evil eye".
i myself am really not to sure, i dont get the evil eye to much, but my cats tend to throw the stink eye at me alot......i would think the "evil eye" would have somthing to do with the eye being the window to the soul like you said, i have heard that alot. Google it (*loves google*), there may be some legends or cultures as dabbler said that could elaberate on it more
I think of it this way. The eyes perceive various types of energy. Light, the different frequencies of light that make color we see. If you consider emotions as energy, then why not ponder if emotions can be conveyed through eye contact? I do think they eyes are a portal to what's inside, if one looks deeply and knowingly enough.
My grandparents believed in this superstition, where a look could cause sickness, tragedy, loss of a job. I just shook my head at it. but some superstistions could not be proved different to those who truly believed in them.
I believe when bad things begin to
happen to them, if someone gave them
the evil eye.
Then they would think they were.
Thanks for all the info everyone.Kashka,I have a tendancy to feel as you do about it.
And what is the difference in the evil eye and the stink eye?
A proxy effect of the evil eye could be reasoned.
Even if the person " gazed upon" doesn't subscribe to the concept, or doesn't know anything about it, those present that witness the jesture adopt a stance of suspicion, or even contempt for the individual.
Contempt is often the reason that someone is given the " eye".
There is also the " green eye". The eyes relay a significant portion of communication, emphisising verbal communications.
Stern silence is effective in its own right. Jestures added to that silence ( especially when a person expected a tirade) is disarming, so subtle.
Like receiving a pin prick, when one was bracing for a sword slash.
Yes Dab,that makes sense also. What is kindof weird to me about it is that many use an eye to ward off the evil eye.Seems a contradiction.Fire with fire? Any thoughts?
The evil-eye is what I give the time-clock at work even on the most innocuous of days. Mal occhio, some people think, really exists...Depending on what one would mean by, the "evil eye", I would disagree. If someone were to gaze at me menacingly, I'd tell them to have a nice day, without worrying about curses or such. The effects of the "evil eye", I think, are commensuate with ones psyche. On another note, its great to think that something like that could operate unchecked, convulsing society into a kind of paroxysm of invidious envy, which is to say, actively manifest a passive resentment, which would be projected outward through the gaze-through the whole language of gestures and physiognomy...to which most of the world are deaf, or totally unaware of, but whose effects would be realized nevertheless.
My gesture of choice is the cold shoulder.
or the Intent Smirk.
The evil eye from what i've seen doesn't typically work unless someone witnesses it happen, and even then it's iffy.
If other people see it, like Dab said, they might assume there was a good reason, and begin to show similar feelings towards the person using the "they're just odd" mask.
If the person it is aimed at notices it, it typically doesn't do anything unless the person believes it has changed something. Their off behavior creates changes throughout their usually structured day, and by the third day all of those reverberations have found their way back, creating all sorts of "bad luck" for the person.
"I got the evil eye, now i'm fired from my job"
You got the evil eye, then were so worried something would happen that your efficiency plummeted, plus you spilled hot coffee on everyone and totally screwed up your reports.
Most curses are like this, working with changing someone's behavior so that they create their own misfortune.
My gesture of choice would be the "stone-faced" look. It drives would be "killers" nuts when you don't respond to their self-conscience queries.
Smirking...yes, thats always a good one.
Especially when a person is seeking to irk you into a public display of arguement.
As an example a former assistant manager who put the Ass Man in Assistant manager already knew his days were numbered, his constant provocations I met with blank stares, and smirks throwing his whole
agenda off kilter.
Cabion damn fine post!
I know in Feng Shui there is the bangua mirror to repel such things. I used to study up on Feng Shui. My grandparents from Italy really believed in all that stuff about the evil eye and then I just researched all the different nationalities on the subject.
I can see the significance, and reasoning of using a reflective surface to counter the evil eye, I would spectulate that anyone considering giving the evil eye would pause to consider that it may be reflected back to them.
To test the concept of " feeling watched", I have conceived a controlled set up.
Three two way mirrors, and one traditional mirror.
a person is let into the subject room, and a member of the test group enters one of the rooms behind the mirrors. the windows placed left, Right, and behind the subject the other one placed on the ceiling.
Using a button panel the subject indicates if they feel watched, and from which angle they feel watched from.
On that last post you made Dab, I guess it is a thought to see what peoples "instincts" can show.
On the post above that one you made, it is almost like the "one reaps what they sow" theory. If one believes and gives the evil eye, then I would imagine one would worry that the evil eye would bounce back on them.
I think even in Witchcraft, something is mentioned about the 3x3 theory...something like that..perhaps three fold.
Instinct indeed.
Anytime we venture into an area, we natualy assess the vantage points, then just as naturally ( subconciously) we assess wheither or not we " covered our sixes'" that tinge is unsettling, a natural instinct to preserve ourselves.
The evil eye is intended, I believe for the most part, to intimidate and/or bestow guilt, and according to how sensitive you are, if at all, it can realize either of its objectives. The mirror gimmick can be humorous, if you think about it in a 3 Stooges sort of way.
You can see a great deal of evidence in the Eastern Indian cultures in much of their clothing with little mirrors all over them. But what about having an evil eye to ward off the evil eye?
LOL eye for an eye?
Reduce the mind to state zero a coldnness akin to absolute zero then focus on the frequency, this is the most dangerous state-
The eyes glaze over dark and stormy those around will be drawn, there maybe side affects, clouds and chill winds as the state builds.
Alternatively get fired up with passion or anger and watch the fireworks in the eyes.
i think it was pascals wager that said there are four ways for perception to happen: there is nothing, and the mind sees nothing; there is something and the mind sees it; there is something and the mind cannot see it; and the mind sees something that is not there.
The third instance is the one we are naturally more afraid of, so our minds will tell us something is there when there is nothing, creating the fourth instance.
Dab, if you took that experiment farther, using the two way mirrors and such, only didn't put anyone behind them, and asked the person what they felt, they would still tell you they felt watched.
Correct, that would make it a double blind study.
The testers would randomize the sitters as well.
Just to throw this out there...
Perhaps it is because of our third eye, our psychic spiritual eye. It never closes its always open seeing everything. It connects us to the divine spirit as well.
And with that, we have thought and will. You think about harming someone, and believe in it strongly enough that the person does come into harm. Our thoughts are powerful things. So with that in mind and tying it in with our third eye or brow chakra, we think an evil thought we attach our will, and give someone the evil eye.
First thing:
I would like to be the first to welcome our new, Laser beam eyes, Leader...
Second:
I am very superstitious by nature. The Romanian in me is constantly looking over my shoulder and on the ground. It isn't that the eyes are windows, it is how easily they show intent. My Great Grandma would tell me that The Evil Eye could be killed with a look right back. Just show them that you are aware of their intentions and they will usually move on.
Thats very interesting WW.Thank you for that imput. You know,I have actually heard of peeps dropping dead after taking a hit from an evil eye. Now,Im not saying whether the stories are true or false..only that I have heard.
The japanese sword legend Musashi made the same mistake in his book of the five rings. He believed that if you had a certain mindset, that no warrior, or number of soldiers, could bring you down.
He failed to take into consideration the mindsets of the others, how close they were to the 'ultimate mindset'.
Most people naturally have psychic protection that they don't have to think about to use, like leukocytes.
I follow your reasoning Cabrion,
Though I see that as the Psyche factor as well.
A persons Psyche can be scarred, as well as enriched by a glance, or a stern
gaze.
.. sadly an example is; have you ever seen an abused child or wife flinch
for no apparent reason, then realize that the abuser was in line of sight to them.
If all matter is linked and say string theory is correct then perhaps there is a thread from one eye to another;
This thread may enter the optic nerves, then into the brain.Manipulating the threads frequency may tweak the opponents unconcious signals to the heart.
Example~ I once went to see a Dr for routine jabs and she asked if I was in the forces? I was surprised.
"Oh I can normally tell, its in the eyes, that thousand mile stare..."
Perhaps it is more than that?
I have always found it interesting that on our one dollar bills we have an eye.A left eye.
It is situated on top of a 13 stepped, unfinished pyramid. No one actually knows what it means but some say it is A Masonic symbol while others swear it is the evil eye,or the eye of Satan. The pyramid is interesting too in that it is Egyptian, and they were really into the eye of Horus.

superstitious beliefs of a culture of old, yet how many actually believe this scenerio right now, the glance could kill you or cause you ill luck
I have to admit I believe that it is possible but not in the sense of just a glance!
A scenario of a possible pub fight, one guy gives the other possibly more timid guy the evil eye.
The timid guy gets scared and causes his body to go through all sorts of stress levels which if it were to happen on a regular basis could result in ill health or even suicide.
Obviously it wouldn't just of been the evil eye it would result from the intimidation and a number of other factors being present.
I'm Just brain storming lol
I tell you one incidence...
that time my son was 4 year old he and his friend came to my home (his home). I was that time in the home. His friend started telling me that one old person who was monk type (old man having beard) was gazing on my son strangely and they were exited on that and looked little feared...
after few hours again my son came with 3-4 friends in the home and started telling that Pa-pa Papa one eagle was hurt and she landed on third floor of building no. 10 on third floor through the terrace gate... she is very fierce...
You wont believe me that that morning I did told him the story of how eagle grown her children and how she made them fly...
There is definitely co-relation of that gaze with my story and what did my child and its friend said and he only did not tell but others too supported him and the first incidence of gaze was told by his friend....
Immediately I did pray against any bad happenings as soon as I heard that that person gazed my son strangely...
my son is now 15 and is not superstitious and even do not know these things...
But the thing is, the only known way one could control the appearance of the eye is to move they eyelid to cover a certain amount of it. So that we can see feelings by looking into someones eyes, whether it be the "evil eye" or something else, surely indicates that the eye is definitely the window to something deeper, for instance the soul.
I think that a person can emit energy with their eyes and feelings to other people with the eyes. If someone looks at me in a hateful way i know that i can feel their hate.
I've heard I have given the evil eye to one person, my Father.
I think it means that if you have a burning hate for someone, that gets stronger and stronger in your soul. It comes out in such a way that when you look at them, the stare you give, is like you want to kill them then and there.
