Once upon a time, if a vampire were portrayed in a movie or in story, even if the vamp was basically a good guy, he (or she) had to die at the end.
in fact i cant think of a single vampire movie made before the 80s that didn't kill off the vampires by the end of the film.
To me it seems that is changing. the vampires can go on living...even if they are truly evil.
Do you also find that to be true?
if so, why do you think that is?
Lastly...can you think of any vamp movies/stories where the vamp walks away at the end?
~W~
are we talking really old movies? or just movies in general?
while we are on the subject I think the first time I really sympathized with the "Villain" was in Dracula's Daughter, it was such a sad story.
movies in general.
dracs daughter was a really good example. she wasnt a bad person...but she was a vamp, and therefore had to die in the end.
~W~
Well, the obvious one where the vamps walk away would be Twilight.
Other than that, in Queen of the Damned, after they band together and off Akasha, and Maharet turns to a living statue, the rest of them walk away...aside from the three [?] whom Akasha managed to kill. Obviously, I'm referring to the last scene, not the club scene or the concert scene.
Interview With A Vampire - Louis walks away at the end, doesn't he?
umm then "Interview with a Vampire" and "Hellsing(not strictly a movie) " Blood:TLV" I'm sure there are others
truly I cannot understand why they changed the end of Interview with a vampire
that and the part where Louis had a dead wife, it was such an insignificant change that it bugs me a lot.
well the end was a big change.
also I didn't like Antonio Banderas being cast as armand, he looked nothing like he was supposed to.
Yeah, Armand in QOTD was a bit disappointing as well...I believe, in the books, he is twelve or thereabouts? And in the movies, he looks to be more in his 20s.
he's supposed to be under 20, with curly blonde hair, and Italian. he is described as "angelic"
there is an old movie called "vampyres" about lesbian vamps.
dont they walk away at the end?
~W~
I cannot remember I will have to watch it.
the idea of trying to watch EVERY vampire movie ever made in order of production is very appealing.
anytime your in texas fate...
and vampira....if you enjoy seeing beautiful female vampires, with the body shapes of the early 70s (curvy ) then give it view...i think amazon has it.
~W~
texas is closer to me than most people i talk to here.
Twilight not all vamps have to die, only the bad guys. And my favorite, Interview with a Vampire, he doesn't die, but tells his story, then leaves. sure he hates his life, but he is still a good guy and lives.
in the 2nd and third blade movies the vampire society continues to live technically, and in let the right one in the vampire lives, the underworld movies, ganja and hess, the hunger.
My local library had a copy of Vampyros Lesbos. It's not that good, but for free worth a watch.
Innocent Blood (1992) about a beautiful female vampire who gets involved with a detective after she offs some gangsters (she has a craving for Italian). Fun movie, very modern, and she survives in the end.
well vampires lived at the end, just not all vampires.
I think there should be more of vampire anti-hero story.
I have noticed that MOST movies, mainly the B movies, the vampire dies, and everyone lives happily ever after. I think it is because the way Hollywood portrays them. The evil, dark force that must be stopped!
Two movies I can think of are Interview with the Vampire, and oddly enough, Vampires Los Muertos
It has Jon Bon Jovi playing a Vampire Hunter. Comes after Vampires I beleive. Horrible movie
Lol @FateUnseen
Hmm...30 Days of Night, even the "good guy" vampire who sacrificed himself for the good of the group and ladida, dies. I never really thought about it before, I'm having problems coming up with any more movies where the vamp/s get to live....
in 30 days of night, the bad guy and good guy both die...the rest of the vamps seem to live.
there was one that had lucy liu as the vamp...i cant recall if she died or not tho.
~W~
Lucy Liu...as a vampire.....innnnnnnteresting. Every time I hear Lucy Liu I think Charlie's Angels and Drew Barrymore haha
I think Taylor Lautner is secretly a vampire, and him playing a werewolf in Twilight is the ultimate irony hahaha
I'm gonna call "sympathy for the devil" with this question. Our roots and legends say vampires should be staked to keep from coming back alive because the dead should remain just that. Dead. However something within their systems just keeps them coming back for more. So yeah, i think why vampires became more of a romanticized creature is because people are starting to see the other side of the monster. lol At least that's my opinion. ;)
I think movies used to be seen as an end unto themselves. Now with a globalized entertainment industry and lucrative digital rights, producers turn to pulp novels for inspiration -- especially those that consist of multiple books and long story arcs. Every movie is now seen as a potential franchise with multiple sequels and very profitable merchandising opportunities. This is especially true with trendy things like vampires.
Therefore; vampires must survive their way through several novels and therefore; multiple movie sequels, clothing lines, accessories, video games, lunch boxes, etc.
I liked 30 days of night... they were monsters.... and I have a little thing for monsters.... but the ending was so god aweful... I think he should have bitten the girl and joined the others. The movie is more of monsters than people really... so I liked it.
so you think then that it has more to do with the economics of present day hollywood than from a generally more positive feeling about vamps?
i mean once upon a time women fainted in fear at bela lugosi as dracula...now women dream of lestat or edward seducing and drinking them.
really seems that there has been a major shift in this realm.
~W~
I think it could partially be the consumerism, but the attitude has still definitely changed. It started when shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer showed that the "monsters" had some "soul" or "feelings" and that the "hero/ine" was sleeping with the "enemy." I think that helped shift the general attitude from "OMG BLOODSUCKING MONSTER!" to "OMG BLOODSUCKING SEXY BEAST!"
well a vampire movie where the vamps live at the end before 1980...although not done very well to show as vamps (but are in the book) would be the Vincent Price movie Last Man on Earth (first movie adaption of I Am Legend) it was in the 50s
Vampires make it alive in Queen of the Damned too. And ALL of the twilight movies.
i Don't remember the name but I think there was a silent film where the vampire lived
i can only think of a single silent vamp film...
nosferatu.
and he really did go bye bye.
~W~
yeah but he was really not a vampire, he was supposed to be a ghoul who had served a vampire and then got into the habit of drinking blood himself
How do you figure? It's essentially the same story as Dracula, but the names were changes because F.W. Murnau couldn't get the rights to Stoker's work.
Nosferatu = vampire
im really curious about the nosferatu thing...
where did you get the ghoul serving the vamp thing?
as was said a moment ago, murnau couldnt get the rights to dracula, so he filmed a slightly altered version (taking place in germany) and changed a the name of the main character to count orlock and viola! a new movie!
altho a court did rule against him later and ordered all the copies destroyed. im really glad that didnt quite work out.
thats the story ive always heard, what is the ghoul thing?
just curious...
~W~
i dont recall the other two, but in lost boys and night stalker, the vamps died
i assume you mean the nightstalker that started the tv show in the 70s?
~W~.
In Buffy and Angel the vamps don't "always" die...
Also, new series called "The Gates," has vampires &&they haven't been killed...yet. It's a bit early to tell haha.
the gates? where would i find it...(and would i want to find it?)
there is a bbc show called being human. its not bad. the vamp that is the star of that show is also the hero.
~W~
I can't think of any movies where the vampire walks away in the end. But I think it was due to the fact that Hollywood had the Good conquers evil attitude so the vamp had to die no question about it.
I think the trend is changing because when you look around society today, the bad are conquering the good and pretty rapidly.
So they have to change their stance. But now there is that romanticism of the vampire so its just another Hollywood trend. Maybe the next step will be the Vampire is good and innocent hunted by the evil human beings hell bent on wiping out their race just because they exist, so hence they are persecuted.
I don't relate twilight as a vampire novel...
The author admits she did ABSOLUTELY NO research at all on folklore or vampires in general.... so it just happened that she wanted to make up her version of "vampire" the book is actually targeting teenage emotions... not vampires.
I agree with you almost all the way... but instead of focusing on the teenage emotions, I believe it was more about creating a story that people can lose themselves in.
but i definitely think it did help people get more used to the idea of vamps, completely made up or not
yeah its like she just picked the word vampire at random, just like FMA did with alchemy
another book i just finished is called marked, and its also aimed at a teen audience. there is much in it that had my eyes wide open as its what i personally associate with some of my vampiric dreams.
a fun read, and while its definitely aimed at girls, its one that male, female, old or young can enjoy.
this book is about mostly teen vamps, and the vamps are the heros. most of the humans come off as fundamentalist morons.
~W~
The Forsaken was also one where vamps survived. That was one of my favvorite vampire movies! :)
it seems like most things where the vampire survives its because there is something more evil they must fight
seems there are a large number of "good vamp" books that are out there just now.
most of them yes are fighting more evil things, but that is part of the tension of the story. after all, you need something to drive the plot.
~W~
Being Human BBC America...hush...who's been talking?
before you start it wasn't f**kin me! ROFL>
Finally watched Daybreakers and although the movie generally annoyed me, with respect to this thread, that movie had an interesting twist.
The 'good vampire' who's trying to find a blood substitute and thinks there could be a cure 'survives' by becoming human again. I suppose, all depending on your perspective on the matter, that's one way.
I think the mind set of the world has changed from the good vs evil mind set of the late century. We know that evil can triumph and that some things we once deemed to be evil weren't so evil just misunderstood. I think this is a reflection of societies changing attitudes.
Greetings from night wolf!
I am new here at VR, so far I am liking what I see. To be accepted is a good feeling indeed.
parts of the world are far more accepting now...but many places are also perhaps even more intolerant than they were once were.
i wonder if ever we will see most of the earth just accept others for what they are without persecution in our lifetimes.
~W~
The Gates is a show on ABC
It is okay kinda soap opera-ish
It not only has vampire, but werewolves and a half human half succubus
it is an interesting watch
http://abc.go.com/shows/the-gates
i think as twilight and trueblood became successes major networks are more open to the ideas of vampire shows, why this didn't happen when buffy became popular idk
i recall when they tried to remake dark shadows...
it only lasted for something like 6 shows.
