What represents goth subculture in the home, or personal space?
I enjoy antique Victorian furniture, and fixtures. my early intro to Goth Subculture always had that antique back ground.
I like my style... victorian gothic, mixed with modern themes. but I always like to switch it up.
I never keep the same thing for too long... that's why I like gothic pieces. they are so interchangeable
Many people just see emos...
Elegant, lovely, and seriously misunderstood.
Like a black rose
Emo is trend, more costume then what was goth before goth went mainstream. The goth I knew (80s) was signature, and a naked goth expressed goth!
Emo, is also very predictable, just like neo-punk. just like Glam rock was, and same as Neo Hip hop.. it is all trend off shots of the original.
i have to wonder whether or not previous ages had this much trouble figuring out just what they were because there were so many confusing names for it
first off emo and goth are not ever close to the same thing. goth isn't teenage little boys with long bangs who complain about everything and wear skinny jeans and only listen to mainstream bands......so... moving on.
Goth as a design is just that... It's littereally called a goth design... its actually where the term of dress and personal appearance came from. The gothic style buildings and design... So the best way to describe it is old school Europen catherdrals and religious buildings...or things that are inspired by such works of art.
Goth is also very old. It actually dates back centuries but was present in London during the 60's where the name was shortened to Goth.
I have antique pieces that are 200 yrs old, that belonged to my grandparents. They have been refinished to a really dark brown color, and most of the metal we have in the house is wrought iron. Most of the rest of the added stuff, like our bookcases, are black. It's rather ecclectic, but I like the way it all works together, old and new.
"A naked goth was still goth"
Dabbler, that is the best description ive ever heard.
It appeared to me that the question was what type of decor did a goth use to decorate their homes, talking about the goth subculture.
Gothic furnishings is something else. It is from I think around the 12th century and exemplifies the furnishings and styles of the grand cathedrals of the time. It was medieval and heavily carved with metal attachments. I don't believe the two words are interchangeable for the furnishings, goth and gothic, but is for the subculture. There is also revival gothic and neogothic furniture as well. Personally I like Victorian blended with other styles of furnishings. My tastes are eclectic. I am no expert in this period so not sure and I don't know how a goth would decorate their home providing they wanted something more campy than anyone else. I personally think it is an individual thing and not something involving the whole movement.
I have a more earthy decorative style. Natural wood and live plants but the furniture is older. Mostly wood and ivory cloth, with antiqued lace brightening up darker mahogany pieces. I prefer the contrast between the dark and light... with bold colors splashed in to draw the eye to specific pieces... like a bold blood red chair, or bright yellow curtains and blue pillows in my French Window seat...
Thank you Azure, your candor has demonstrated how signature is a key element.
what is considered "emo" today is not the same as Emo in the 80's it was political and had nothing to so with the way these kids look today. I find it strange to use the same name for 2 totally different subcultures
see its all so hard to keep up with all the terms and definitions of what each subculture is, it gives me a headache, can i just be me?
of course you can be you, just pick your labels wisely. you really can't bypass the labels. You're son/daughter, brother/sister, mother/father, friend to someone/somewhere... but since I live with Analisa, our decor is the same lol... but I really love the pink/black stuff they are coming out with now.
i have a separate building that includes my garage with two large rooms. i redid the rooms, and put a secret door between the two rooms.
one of the rooms i call my goth bat cave. the walls are textured like stone, and painted in shades of gray.
the ceiling is black with red trim. all the electrical outlets are black with red covers. the ceiling fan is black metal, with red blades.
the carpet is a deep gray, and i keep my coffin in this room.
its also the room i keep all my guitars, my keyboards, alot of my ....darker...books, and several statues, including one of anubis and one of set.
its a good place for me to go and de-stress.
so i can have visitors in my home and they will seen nothing unusual...and one place that is my sanctum sanctorum.
LOL
alot of these people are correct about alot of decor.
blood red satin chairs, black leather couches, maybe some
animal skins or skulls about the place.I say, halloween items are also a good touch.even some metal spikes,
silver coated skulls,and shrunken heads.gobblets,
candels, midevil tools, and some victorian items are best.
what is more gothic them gargoyels?!oh yeah... you cant
have a vamped-out room or house without a gargoyel.
Black or red sofas, Candlabras, black carpeting, and red colored walls with cadle light holders in the walls with red, or black candles. Certain types of artwork and decor.
