I would think it is cause most of the time the gyspy are extremely close to the earth, to the soil itself, they dont need much and dont search for much, they see in the simple things of life, the most wonders and they usually are more in harmony with the nature that help then enhance their abilites.
I would assume that it is because Gypsy magic is mostly uncorrupted by time and influence. They gypsy people had a tendency to migrate and hide when they didn't want to be found, as a result very effective wards have been passed down generation to generation and much of the lore to go with them is included. Full instructions on how to keep that which you don't want away- for good.
I would be led to believe that gypsy magic is powerful against Vampires because gypsy's were always big on fighting and casting curses, and Vampirism has always been viewed as a curse itself.
In books and films Gypsy magic is always seen as wild and unknowable... and there's always a handy Gypsy around to help vanquish the bad guy.
I don't believe Gypsy magic is any more or less valid, or more or less powerful than any other form of magic, just that it's obscurity means that it is used by the film/literature industry as a "fall back" point.
I think the reason why movies/books makes gypsy magick look really powerfull against vampires is because a lot of gypsy's are mysterious to a point, and that helps to sell the movie/book better, but i think that any type of magick could work just as well against vampires...
Given the fact Gypsies are nomadic and their origins come from every ethnic group known it would make perfect sense that they have knowledge of magick from every corner of the world. Very deep roots.
Now, as to why they are seen in pop culture as having the power to deal with vampries etc, Bram Stoker himself made them central characters in his book. Forever tieing them to vampires.
There is a complete essay listed in J. Gordon Melton's Vampire Book :Encyclopedia of the Undead edition 2.
on Gypsies and their roll in vampire lore.
One reason I ponder at, is possibly because they were in a time period of fighting and wars.
A vampire is the first curse of lilith, so it would stand to reason that those who are well versed in curse magik would be most effective against the curse of curses...333
firstly Gypsies are one in their own right.
Clanish to their own.
They Believe in carma, Healing their sick from earths own remidies.
They are strong protectors who have had to fight for their very own existance, cast out for the way they live.
I have never heard of any such vile against vampireism, to us it is just a myth.... which have a following just like any other.
Magic is used for protection, Curses are uesd for those who harm them when fighting is not an option....
read my Pro...
Nice post Ravensunflower … I love to read, now I will get that book is it highly recommended?
I guess if they know all magic’s there chaos magic users to define it …
I agree … wicca is from golden dawn and some very creative minds lol
There is always something that is more powerful or better, stronger etc than something or someone else, why shoulden't Gypsies be better than Vamps? I think its a Wicca thing myself but there another thought for ya!!!!
It’s impossible to be a wicca thing as wicca is only 50 years old lol
i also don’t agree about lilith cursing vampires she was way before vampires ever showed up lol
and no where does it say she makes vampires in original text just incubus and succubus which are not vampires or they would be called vampires lol
I think hollywood had a lot to do with that point not that gypsy magic is not powerfull or anything.
I guess as all we have to go on is written stories mainly.
im a firm believer in magic only working if u believe whole heartedly in it.
Probably because Gypsies go wayy back, magic passed down through the families. Since the magic is probably older than the vampire, it can probably affect it better. My guess is that the older the vampire would be, the less it would affect it.
Gypsy music is said to be irresistable to Fae also, they cannot resist dancing to it. There are legends that the Rom were granted certain boons when they gave up the security of a permanent home for the open road. One of those was certain magical infuences over most types of Otherkin in one form or another. But then, there are about as many legends about Gypsies as there are most magickal creatures, like the one that says that Gypsies are the children of Lilith and not Eve... So you can base one myth upon another, or you can look into the fact that this is a people originating from the same part of the world as the creatures (mythical vampires) they seem to have power over. Do the math--you get to know what you are up against and you find the best way to get around it.
Gypsy magic is something that has always fascinated me, but where to begin to study it is the problem. Their magic is held close to their clan and they don't share it with just anybody. I believe it begins in their music and dance. But they have spent hundreds of years living from the land and seeking no more then what the land can offer. They protect themselves and yet weave powerful curses. So it would make logical sense that those who can affectively cast a curse also know how to ward against curses. They may just have more of an understanding of what "makes" the vampire and how to counter act it.
I have to agree Wiccan and Gypsy are two totally different kinds of magic
wicca and Gypsy magick are kinda the same i mean magick is magick it is just done in different ways...
i rather enjoyed this conversation for the reason bein that i come from a gypsy background and was influenced by it all
my real mother comes from a hngarian clan and was said to be connected to royalty long story ..
anyhow the magic itself is truly taught and passed on thru birth and family schooled by the eldest to the young
it is extremely powerful and truly real
and nothing like wicca
vampires hmmm gypsys tend to understand the darkness in the world we expect it.
and vampires are no different
the movies are one thing but in life if you believe with your whole being then watch out whoever gets in the way of a wild nomadic dancer of old magik .
just my point of view then again im biest
wow This topic is really cool i think i'm gonna read more into this
Hey drkdream
Im of gipsy descent on my mums side ….
i understand too
I respect them as well, but I don't believe they all have special powers against vampires but I do believe some of them might have had their own special abilities
lavisbre hmm some thing in common my grand mother and her whole family are gypsy's ( which is really cool)
Gypsies are/were a strange lot. Guess they made a good story character. Here the stores lock the doors or hire extra personal to watch them when they come through. And the store owners are not worrying about magic.
