The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory

We all know that mythologies are shaped by the times they spring up in. I've been having a few thoughts lately, mainly idle ones while on break at work, about what form and weaknesses vampires would have if they had been hypothesized by modern superstition? For example; in the age that vampires first came about, vampired (at least in Eastern Europe) were impaled through the chest, because it was believed that doing so would anchor them to thier graves. What would be the modern equivalent? BTW, allow me to preemptorily apologise if this has been brought up in another thread entirely. I'm just looking for theories.....

hmm its possible i guess, that because this era is scientific and technology is why there is some much talk of virus theorys and genetics, and what not...but i dunno.

Mmm, my mind is along the same tracks as yours i think MM. Maybe a mutated virus broke loose from a lab, infected a human, vamp bit human and picked up virus!! Other that that i can't think of anything right off the top of my head

Just had another thought about the virus....maybe a mutated version of ebola, you know the virus that makes people bleed out, could have the same effect on vamps, maybe??

A redsign of The Vampire based on more modern beliefs. An interesting proposition. Unfortunatly it is a little like trying to reinvent the wheel. Though there was an interesting straight to DVD movie called "Night Addicts" which kind of posed a more crackhead idea to Vampirism. You might want to take a look at it.

They would probably try to freeze a vampire, until they figured some way out to kill them...

those myths are being created as we speak. watch any modern horror film. in ye oldie days, people told stories by word of mouth then someone wrote them down. nowadays, we have films and books to spread our modern myths and tales.

ultrasonics. they might knock out a vampire, as they would have more sensitive hearing. electromagnetic field nets would stop them from shapeshifting or becoming mist.
maybe electrocution could kill them.

I read your post, and then I read all the answers… This is an interesting question. Here are my thoughts…

True Myths are shaped by the times they spring up in. If vampires were to show up in our day and age, they could be something totally different.

In our culture it is understood that men/women prey on others for the act of taking their lives. Violence is so common for us that movie makers have resorted to special effect genius to keep our attention.

So, would a vampire myth even be noticed in our day and age? And if it was…we would use something like a cremation to anchor the vampire to his/her grave.

would that be alobe?

I like the way you see this Trivia. It would be hard to recognize a vampire these days due to all the random violence is the world.

There are stories of people killing other people just to drink their blood, or eat them.

I suppose vampires could be considered cannibals since they are depicted as mainly using humans as their prey.

And then depending on the society and culture, things such as cannibalism and bloody sacrifices are either accepted or rejected.

Rejected in the sense of, people are horrified by the tales of what happened to someone else. Human against human...Would it be easier for us to fight against that if we were fighting the "undead" ?

I do think that such behavior is noticed by our society and if it was discovered that vampires did indeed exist in a more modern sense, whether that be from disease or a freak accident, or something...it would be very noticeable.

There's random violence, and then there is killing someone by draining them of blood.

Hmmmm, well, I'm a firm believer that if you just sever the head, nothing will live, screw the stake in the chest theory.

I do agree that vampires in the modern sense would draw attention. Just not the attention such an occurance would cause in earlier times.

I dare to suggest that we are becoming immune to the violence such blood letting is suggesting.

We have had serial killers in history who drained thier victims blood to drink. John Crutchley in 1977 comes to mind. He even claimed to be a vampire.

In my heart I have faith that you are right. Sometimes it is just hard not to see the reality of our world around us.

I also agree with the whole head theory just cut it off and rip the heart out then it should be done .

Maybe the way to kill a vampire would be to turn the iPod up all the way and stick some earbuds in the vamps ears and watch their heads begin to bleed.

That seems to be the way modern times is.

I know this is kinda lame, but this thread brought to mind the UV bullets used in the Underworld. Definitely not a stake. ;)

Depends on whether it's the UV that does the trick, or some other property of the sunlight. Say, like being exposed to the light of God. Which is, I believe, one of the original bases behind the sun mythos.

I agree with the lost head theory. I have never seen anything that can live long without a head.
