Ok, we all know about Nostradamus and his predictions, the latest one being the 2012 end of the world deal. We might find that there are some similarity's to his predictions and true events. But how many are really similar? Are his prediction's that right on? or are his fans trying to make his prophecies fit history and thereby excessively exalting his predictive powers?

we could all read the same prediction and figure out something different.
that is how he wrote it, so only he could figure out what he was saying.

Plus it might not be the end of the world. Just the end of the world as we know it most likely.

But predictions in many cases are made to fit into what is happening. But some times they are a little scary in how close they are to what is going on.

Nostradamus was by historical account an "acid head"...he partook of many mind altering substances as a form of "research" while he attended medical school (but never graduated). I feel that his predictions were nothing more than an acid flashback.

More info about what my previous post said...

Nothing is known about his childhood, but at the age of fifteen he entered the University of Avignon to study for his baccalaureate. After little more than a year he was forced by the Plague to leave again. In 1529, after some years as an apothecary, he entered the University of Montpellier to study for a doctorate in medicine, but was promptly expelled again when it was discovered that he had been an apothecary, which was a 'manual' trade expressly banned by the university statutes for human testing of medicinal drugs. He then continued work as an apothecary, and created a "rose pill" that was widely believed to protect against the the plague.

Even if he was an "acid head" it doesnt mean that he even ever had a flash back. Many have taken mind altering substance and never had a flash back. Just a thought.

Anyway, I think that his predictions are a bit too vague and could fit many circumstances. Also, if you produce as many "predictions" as he did one is bound to hit home now and again.

I agree that his predictions are often very vague. They are as bad as John Edwards. He fishes around for his answers very badly. I think a lot of people want his predictions to be true so they make them fit History. Balderdash, I say.

I'm quite skeptical with Nostradamus' predictions and I agree with Jackofspades. His predictions are very vague so there could be dozens of possible interpretations.

Nostradamus didnt actual make predications he told stories which came out as prodications. He started it with weather reading...I believe some of the weather readers today are story tells also. Nostradamus got more predictions correct then anyone else which is why he is so well known...his predication that 3 brothers who would become leaders of the greatest nation would be assainated would be his most famous and he got 2 out 3 of them right so he is pretty close. Me I think with a ratio like that I would stand up and listern.

Thank you for that bio 'divinemisskat', it was very informative and might help explain more about him. As for the the 'acid head' theory that could be said about many of the great minds trough the times.

I like what you said 'jackofspades' about the predictions being a bit vague, i believe they are also. Anyone can rattle off things that might happen and some where along the line those things might fit into a scenario.

Like what 'darkedpegasus' said about the "3 brothers who would become leaders of the greatest nation would be assainated", I believe that would be to vauge also. First whos to say that the US is the greatest nation and do you know how many other brothers have ran countires that have been assinated?

I'm not saying that "Nostradamus" was a liar or anything. He was a very gifted individual, I just think that his predictions are to hyped up by the public.

I don't think that his predictions were accurate, so to speak. I think that they were so worded so obscurely that they could mean anything. Take his "prediction" of 9/11. He wrote:

"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb. The third big war will begin when the big city is burning."

How is it that we automatically jump to the conclusion that New York City is the "City of God" and that the twin towers are the "two brothers" that Nostradamus was talking about? Because, in part, it fit the situation. In all honesty though, it could have fit many different situations that have happened or may still happen.

It seams to be much easer to review the quatrains and fit them with things past than to use them to figure out what is going to happen.

As mortals we have always used soothe sayers, horoscopes and other forms to tell us what may lay ahead. Nostradumus in his time was a master of stories, yet i find ironic is that as time passed alot of his fables become somewhat of truth. scary. I do believe he did have forsight in a sence to seee images yet to come like our dreams could they be things yet to come or mixed up fables in our mind.

I think it is a matter of interpretation. If you want to see similarities and draw parrallels you will.

An example; the falling of the twin towers. Nostradamus said someting in the line of "and the twins will fall" Well then 9/11 happened and his prophecy came true, or did it.

Norstradamus could easily have been talking about another twin pair in China I think and they are still standing.

Then again - he did also say something about WWIII and that is pretty much a reality, he also said that a weapon, powerful enough to destroy the world, would come to existence and a prince would be born, crazy enough, to press the detonater. There are perhaps some half truths hidden in that as well, and the list goes on.

Does he indeed have predictive powers? Maybe, but I think it is more possible that people are making them come true through their interpretations.

my two cents.

Daedal - that prediction you've quoted has been de-bunked. He didn't make that prediction.

As for prediction, he did so through the guidance of Astrology - not self reflection alone. So the idea of these predictions being acid-induced allegory is a bit off.

There have been several posts about this man, and while I don't profess to know his biography, I will say that he was one of the best predictive astrologers the world has seen (perhaps second only to the ancient Mayans and Aztecs).

If the end of the world is in 2050 who is th say its really the end of the world. Perhaps its the end of the world of what we know it today ..or an end of a era and a begining of the new one perhaps a more enlightened one? ..I just wanted to throw that concept out there to see what response I would get

I subscribe to Merlin he was more dimensional the Arcane specutate on the increase of energy manifestation and the effects that it has on society but that is guarded information If the Bomb had been predicted the course of history would have been altered intensely. If I said there was going to be a tragic event with numerous ripples I not only cover the next event but I cover the fall out as well. there are better examples of Predictions then Nos.The guy that hit both ww1 and 2 and the time between as well... that made Nos.look like ...well John Edward...lol

Truth or not, most of what Nostradamus (or any other famous individual such as he) has said can be an eye opener or thought provoker and the reality is that only they whom have said it truely knew what they meant.

I agree with Skja... It's a lot of interpretation that's taken place since the predictions were written down. We can't be sure that what's happened or happening is what Nostrodamus was really even talking about.

After reading a book, by Henry C. Roberts, interpreting Nostradamus' prophecies, I think his prophecies are in the eye of the beholder. I like many others read many different times in history in his writings he could be refering to. I chalk the prophecies as some of the best; but still believe them as much as finding the ultimate code in the Bible.

Vladmir makes a good point. It can be a good eye opener.

Perhaps the most fruitful way to look at these "predictions" is to look at them in the same tone as Aesop's fables and apply the lessons to daily life. Rabbit and the Hare for example.

When I read his quatrains, I find it hard to see predictions. Looking back, you can certainly make matches with past events, but it is like the horoscopes in the paper. If you look at the one published yesterday, you can usually find something that matched what happened to you.

During his era, there were many people who were using Astrology to make predictions. The Church at the time actually sanctioned Astrology as a viable science.

Unfortunately, Astrology is not as precise as everyone imagines it should be. This is due to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. The result of this law of physics - prediction through Astrology is similar to the effect of a shotgun as opposed to that of a rifle. You can hit the target, but it won't be a direct bullseye.

You can see how later interpretation of the shot is skewed the further away you are from the event, then. The closer you are to the target, the more specific and direct hit you will have. As the shot spreads out (an analogy for the procession of time) the area it covers also becomes broader.

I agree with a lot of you ... I think that it comes down to interpretation. If you want to relate what he is "predicting" to something that has happened, then you will find whatever parallel between the two that you can ...
Sure some of his predictions seem to have come true, I will not deny that ... but how much of that was an actual prediction of the future, and how much was the interpretation of society after the fact?

I used to follow his work but I'm not sure if I really believe that he everything people make him out to be. I know the possible futures can be seen before they happen. But just like anyone else that has this gift it's hit or miss really. For all we know the people that are "interpreting" his predictions have it all wrong.

so a random thought..what if this prediction hasnt happened yet... reading that prediction seems more like Nero burning Rome more than 9/11. The twin towers may have fell and burned but not the whole city.

Or what if its all a big metaphor really. A third war doesnt have to be a physical war...couldnt it be an economic war?? ...just thought id throw something totally bizarro out there :)

A lot of Nostradamus original works where destroyed by his own hands. If you look at his behavioral traits and his motive for publishing the predictions you’ll see that it was for the people of his own time. Most of his predictions that survived destruction have barely come close to resembling anything concrete and can easily have occurred in his own time thus making him a moot point today.

Too many people cling to his writings and have distorted his works and published their own meanings and misinterpretations. The History Channel did a very good investigative story on him awhile back. It was very interesting.

Considering a lot of predictions were somewhat roundabout, nothing PINPOINT accurate in date, time, happenings, etc, you have to find things that fit the prediction.

This might be interesting for you,Nostradamis predicted that one day darkness would cover the sun making the world black in the middle of the day,he said it would be yet another sign of the end of days,It did happen so his prediction was right in one way-the darkness covering the sun-however this "phenomana" was simply the Eclipse, did he see things,I think so but there is almost always a "logical"explanation for others it remains a mystery.

its interesting that many dates match his predictions, like when he predicted a large earthqauke in a major us city, in vegas that day there was a marshmellow plant blew up and it rattled the city like a quake, knocking out windows and such, my sister was there and said it was like an earthqauke, and in other instances nothing happpened.

The problem with Nostradamus and other seers is that most of the time their predictions are so vague that it is hard to tell exactly what and when things will occur. His works are best viewed by looking at the past and seeing if any of his banter can be attributed to an event in history.

It could be argued though that he was not predicting the future but merely providing a social commentary that went against political powers of his time.
