The individual states tax gas within their state.

Oil Companies set their own gas prices.

When demand is high, prices are high..when demand is low, prices are low. As long as US oil companies have demand "world wide" and not just within the US, there will always be some level of demand and profit to be made.

The fed does not have the power to call up an oil company and demand them to lower their prices.

Economics 101. LOL
