This weekend was our weekend for our pumpkin carving tradition. The kids always enjoy it and it's fun to see how their ideas and artistry change over the years.
They grew some of their own this year - these smaller ones, for their small garden, was the fruit of their labor - no pun intended. So it was extra enjoyable for them. Their mom also bought them a Dremmel pumpkin carver which is a neat tool for doing skin cutouts without carving all the way through.
Unfortunately in the hands of a 10 year old, it just turns into a random pumpkin flinger.
Anyway, the results were fun and interesting...
The one on the left was done by my 8-yr old. We wanted to do a vampire carving, much like last years except he put a little more though and skill into it - complete with cape-collars! The middle two, done completely by my daughter - she's 10, we can trust her with a knife now... kind of... the Frankenstien one, with scars and everything, came out great I think. The far right was done by my 5-yr old. He drew out a three-eyed, four-nosed Eyeclops. Ahhh.. the mind of a 5-yr old.
They also felt the need to buy three large pumpkins at Lowe's, since they had them for something like $2 each...
The far left, again, done by my 8-yr old - he wanted a carving of Buckbeak the Hippogriff from Harry Potter... I told him that might be a bit ambitious; this is the end result. The far right was done by the 10-yr old - she wanted to turn it into Harry Potter himself. Notice the lightning bolt scar and glasses - kind of turned out like Harry Potter and Charlie Brown had a love child, but I think that is just as fitting for the holiday. The middle one is perhaps my favorite; drawn out by the 5-yr old. He just wanted something scary. It looks angry, has scars and the mouth with the inverse teeth.. or... gaps in the teeth.. I told him it look a bit like a hockey player that could eat you. He enjoyed that.
All in all, it was a messy, fun good time.

The part I'm impressed with the most about the big one the 5-yr old drew out is how well proportioned he made everything. It took the other two a lot longer to figure that out and they still don't get it right a lot of time.
