Do you think zombies are a possible phenomenon in this day and age? I personally think they already walk among us
It's possible! I would say today many people are "zombified". You seem them walking around with a blank stare, not thinking on their own. I like to call these people cattle and sheep. But, I remember reading about Haitian Voodoo where they do some sort of ritual to turn a person into a zombie. I remember it was detailed in the movie "The Serpent and the Rainbow".
Well this is interesting. Do you mean the original zombie from Haitian folklore, which were just mindless slaves; the George Romero reanimated corpses or the social zombie that is controlled by mass media?
All of them actually, mostly reanimated corpses though, and infectious deseases that can make Humans Very rabid yet worse
You do hear that alot in the Haitan Folklore. People poping up yrs later, after being dead walking around , scavaging , with Zombie like qualities. I loved that movie, Serpent and the Rainbow. It chilled me to know someone has that kinda power.
I believe zombification through an infectious disease or parasite is very plausible. It may even be inevitable. It's only a matter of time untill some super virus evolves that can infect the human brain turning us into mindless zombies. It may even already exist.
Here's a cool article on possible scientific causes of a zombie apocalypse.
http://www.cracked.com/article_15643_5-scientific-reasons-zombie-apocalypse-could-actually-happen_p4.html
what if it was the inoculation against cancer that turned out to be the cause of the Zombie Apocalypse.
dabbler, that could be possible, I'm thinking something like Rabies-Flu hyrbrid
hybrid** but yes anything is possible, I believe its even possible for scientists to buy dna of different viruses now, though I havent looked into it lately, Though I am going to now
Zombie films are fun and the folklore is interesting. Yet, neither interest me all that much.
Zombies are amongst us every day although, we may not recognize them.
Zombies (to me) are of the highest intelligence and are quite accomplished.
Rob Zombie...enough said.
The followers of Southern Louisiana Voodou also believe that you may reanimate people as well. There are many documentaries on it. There might be a Youtube video somewhere
I think it depends on each persons definition of a zombie. I do think many people just do as they are supposed to and walk around not thinking at all. They do as society says and follow the leader like good little lambs heading to slaughter.
Who knows if it's possible or not. Until it happens we may never know. Though with out the scientific stuff we have and run through it may be theoredically possible.
Just think of what insects would carry it if it were.
Over a matter of days we'd be flooded if it were true.
I think reanimating the dead would eventually be possible...But that they would seek human flesh...Not so sure...
Side note you should all watch "Ahhh Zombies!" It's told from the zombies perspective, rather entertaining.
With voodoo, they do exist. It's called micro-dose shellfish poison and brainwashing. As a plague... most likely way something close to it would occur is if one were to hybridize Rabies with Ebola Marburg. Ebola Zaire acts too quickly and has too high of a mortality rate in that given time frame to be a reasonable candidate.
If you mean zombies who eat flesh...No I don't believe but mindless people O YA
Zombies creep me out. Do I believe that they currently exist, no....but do I believe that zombies could happen? Absolutely.
well- i have seen a few haitian "zombies" when my unit went there after the earthquake, im on a team that does security for a certain individual in the unit and had a alley leading to the back of this guys tent and was told not to let anyone past me, and that lethal force was allowed on anyone who tried to force their way past me if i had to
now haitians have nothing to do all day there so they came and hung out with us at our checkpoints talking to us and whatnot, wich was cool, and very usefull because not all of them speak creole, but the english speaking ones would be around and would help translate for you and tell you what was going on when we saw things we didnt understand
one night we saw this guy limping around in front of us walking towards us with a blank assed look on his face and not responding to anything i was saying to him, and the guy that was there hanging out with me explned that he was a zombie, wich kinda creeped me out big time
Well besides being smashed out of your head and acting like a zombie I feel with the way we continue messing with mother nature and making new deases etc I am very fearful that a mash zombie attack will occur sooner then latter
I hate the thought of Zombies being real. I had a bad experience back when I was 5 years old, on Halloween night, a guy dressed as a zombie, and it scared me really bad.
But I do believe some of the newer age zombie theories. About how the Government has been doing experiments for a super solider that would mutate a human body. That's just my opinion on Zombies.
Here is something to be concerned about: I just copied this button code from none other than the U.S. Center for Disease Control website

Go ahead and click the link to see the offical webpage on "preparedness"
Don't worry, the CDC will be investigating in the event of any actual emergency...also don't forget to add "shotgun" to the list of items...and always ALWAYS double tap!!
all i know is if i see a zombie im poking it with a stick an running away but if zombies were to rule an the human race was gone i hope we do at least have a few survivers u know
well I know the first link is kinda a spoof site, but the reasons it comes up with seem fairly logical....and lets all not forget the fungus that turns insects into zombies in order to find safe place to let loose their spores
http://www.cracked.com/article_15643_5-scientific-reasons-zombie-apocalypse-could-actually-happen.html

i know two kinds of zombies, the resurrected slaves of voodoo magic and the typical flesh eating undead. the slaves of the voodoo magic have more function than the modern ones. in some tv shoes like Angel, some zombies have been know to act completely like a normal human.
as for real life, who knows, people can come back from the dead if death only lasted minutes.
if a zombie invasion happens, i'm getting a chainsaw and a sawn-off shotgun.
I do think they are possible. Anything is possible in my book. Though I've seen a couple references to the movie Serpent And the Rainbow in here.
That movie was not actual zombies. Nor was the story it was based on. It was based on a guy claiming to be able to raise the dead. When in fact he was just drugging them with a local plant that merely lowered the heart rate enough to cause the victim to drop into a coma for a while. The "doctor" who called them dead actually worked with the so called witch doctor. They would then charge the families of the victims a fee to "reanimate" their loved ones.
It was all a scam for money. That was what the movie was about. The guy going down to investigate the claims of raising the dead but ended up having it done to him.
It seems most people feel it's possible....
some seem to even HOPE it would happen it seems. lol....
but this question leaves out the fact that media has
created so many differnt kinds of "zombies"....
but I can also see it happening myself.
it'll be an interesting day when they out number our modern day society. lol
i believe that there are zombies walking around us not the walking dead type but the brain dead type. The poor souls who are just walking corpses who seem to have no thoughts of there own, sad really.
However i do not doubt that eventually the literal term for 'zombies' will come to fruittion what with the scientists wanting to do all kinds of experiaments and such.
Interesting thought.... zombies among us today.
I can see how you will associate that....
I personally prefer to call those people vegetables. lol
My brother would have a fit to hear someone "demeaning" the name
of the awesome monsters called "Zombies" hahaha.
=]
I also think its funny that no one has mentioned (or else I missed a post) Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Its practically a blueprint for making your own zombie. Though granted it didnt end well. Lol.
The first time I read that book I was thinking ZOMBIE in the back of my head.
Zombies walk amongst us each and every day. As we pay no attention to the world around us, for we are too lost in all the electronics, and drugs that are given to us in this modernized world. Zombies whom go around and feed off the flesh of the living, I don't doubt also exist. There are cannibals living in this shit hole, and they feed off other humans. The first of man, were those who would kill and feed off of others. In short zombies exist!
I think zombies could be walking among us as real people but they won't attack us as some people may say
Taken from a book entitled "You Might Be A Zombi And Other Bad Things" - by Nathan Birch
"Five scientific reasons why a Zombi Apolalypse could actually happen.
1. Brain Parasites - Parasites that turn victims into mindless, zombielike servants are fairly common in nature. There’s one called Toxoplasma gondii that seems to devote its entire existence to being terrifying.
If you’re comforting yourself with the thought that it may take forever for such a parasite to evolve, you’re forgetting about all the biological weapons programs around the world busy weaponizing such bugs. You’ve got to wonder if those lab workers don’t carry out their work under the unwitting command of the Toxoplasma gondii already in their brains. If you don’t want to sleep at night, that is.
2. Neurotoxins - There are certain kinds of poisons that slow your bodily functions to the point that you’ll be considered dead, even to a doctor. The poison from Japanese blowfish can do this.
The victims can then be brought back under the effects of a drug like stramonium (or other chemicals called alkaloids) that leave them in a trancelike state with no memory but still able to perform simple tasks like eating, sleeping, moaning, and shambling around with their arms outstretched.
On the one hand, it’s already happened, so that earns it some street cred. But even if some evil genius intentionally distributed alkaloid toxins to a population to turn them into a shambling, mindless horde, there is no way to make these zombies aggressive or cannibalistic.
Yet.
3. The Real Rage Virus - When humans are infected with mad cow, they call it Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Check out the symptoms:
• Changes in gait
• Lack of coordination (stumbling and falling)
• Muscle twitching
• Myoclonic jerks or seizures
• Rapidly developing delirium or dementia
Sure, the disease is rare and the afflicted aren’t known to chase after people in murderous mobs. But it proves widespread brain infections of the rage variety are just a matter of waiting for the right disease to come along.
If the whole sudden, mindless violence idea seems far-fetched, remember that you are just one brain chemical (serotonin) away from turning into a mindless killing machine. All it would take is a disease that destroys the brain’s ability to absorb that one chemical, and suddenly it’s a real-world 28 Days Later.
So imagine such an evolved disease, which we’ll call super mad cow, getting a foothold through the food supply. Say this disease spreads through blood-on-blood contact, or saliva-on-blood contact. Now you have a rage-type virus that can be transmitted with a bite.
With one bite, you’re suddenly the worst kind of zombie: a fast zombie.
4. Neurogenesis - You know all the controversy out there about stem cell research? Well, the whole thing with stem cells is that they’re basically used to regenerate dead cells. Particularly of interest to zombologists is neurogenesis, the method by which stem cells are used to regrow dead brain tissue.
So you take a brain-dead patient, use the techniques of Neurogenesis to regrow the brain stem, and you now have a mindless body shambling around, no thoughts and no personality, nothing but a cloud of base instincts and impulses. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what we like to call a real, live, undead zombie.
5. Nanobots - A technology that science engineered to make you terrified of the future. We’re talking about microscopic, self-replicating robots that can invisibly build—or destroy—anything. Sure, at some level scientists know nanobots will destroy mankind. They just can’t resist seeing how it happens.
Scientists have already created a one-cell nanocyborg, by fusing a tiny silicone chip to a virus. The first thing they found out is that these cyborgs can still operate for up to a month after the death of the host. Notice how nanoscientists went right for zombification, even at this early stage.
According to studies, within a decade they’ll have nanobots that can crawl inside your brain and set up neural connections to replace damaged ones. That’s right; the nanobots will be able to rewire your thoughts. What could go wrong?
Do the math, people.
Someday there will be nanobots in your brain. Those nanobots will be programmed to keep functioning after you die. They can form their own neural pathways and use your brain to keep operating your limbs after you’ve deceased and, presumably, right up until you rot to pieces in midstride.
Of course, when that happens the nanobots would just need to transfer to a new host. Therefore, the last act of the nanobot zombie would be to bite a hole in a healthy victim, letting the nanobots stream in and set up camp in the new host. Once in, they can shut down the part of the brain that resists (the cortex) and leave the brain stem intact. They will have added a new member to the unholy army of the undead.
Look, we don’t want to create a panic here. All we’re saying is that on an actual day on the actual calendar in the future, runaway microscopic nanobots will end civilization by flooding the planet with the cannibalistic undead.
Science says so..."
Well obviously I think its possible, The CDC (center for disease control) actually had a pesponse plan ready for it. I was in class and a classmate found it on their website. I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. But for the thought of them walking amoung us, I seriously doubt that is happening :)
Actually, ~KnightLevin~... documented cases of Zombi attacks have occured worldwide. The most recent attack was in Los Angeles a few years back. It was covered up as being a homeless population riot in the nitty gritty district.
A few gang members took up residence in an abandoned school for their survival. The school was the perfect place for repelling the horde.
The Chinese came up with their own Zombi in a Black Ops project known as "Black Dragon". The United States military took that project and created something a bit different. "Zombi" soldiers. Picture Return of the Living Dead 3. Containers and all.
Zombi attacks have been documented since Ancient Egypt with the mummy attacks and what not.
Zombie is just a word that has gone over into fiction and everyone thinks of them differently. Such as the remark Dabbler made which I thought was relating to I Am Legend, lol. His book was about vampires, lol. Some of those that adapted it made them appear more like what we think of as zombies. It's like the movie I watched recently called Priest. In the movie, the vampires looked more like zombies and had a queen and were really their own race. It was the queen that made the first human/vampire hybrid. It is a Korean story so it was their view. Same with zombies, there is overlap from vampire, and werewolf stories.
I have seen documentaries based in Haiti where they show a person being given some sort of potion and then buried. They were saying that it put them in sort of a cataleptic state which appeared to be death. Their heart rate dipped and their breathing to almost nothing. People thought they were dead and then they would dig them up and for some reason doing this affected their memory. It was on something like the Discovery Channel and a long time ago. I don't believe in zombies like in horror stories but I do believe someone due to illness could appear that way.
There are so many things that are beyond our realm of understanding and scientific discovery so Zombies I supposed could be possible just as any other so called "fantasy" creature might be possible as well.
I think that a zombie, being the living dead, is possible. There are people that technically 'die' and are revived. Those that drown and are brought back with CPR, those that are shocked when their heart stops, etc. In a sense, these are the living dead, zombies.
But as for the zombies portrayed as hungering for brains and such, no.
There has been documented proof going way back at outbreaks of something that turns people into undead berserkers... a natural occuring viral/bacterial agent?
Something of divine origin?
In an age where folks like to take samples back to vaults and attempt to weaponize them, you never can tell.
A foe like the zombie however is a formidable one.
It feels nothing but hunger. All its victims become its allies.
On a tactical view point, this is pure dread.
I'd like to see em confined to the screen because as society is now, the zombie would hit it like a buzzsaw.
Belief is a powerful thing.
If it shuffles and reaches for you, clobber it in the head.
To be honest, I just want a bit of proof from a reliable source, I have yet to see any, until then I am a complete disbeliever
I would think that technically anyone who's come back from being dead would classify as a zombie. Your laying in a hospital bed and you go into death. The shock pads being applied to you bring you back into life. Thus making you the undead.
Realistically with all the technology, nuclear power we have I say it may actually happen. If it's anything like the writing or movies. Where even birds and other species could be affected we are in some serious shyte.
Could you really kill someone that was undead. would moral kick in to you making you think they weren't undead. Would you kill to save someone else. I honestly don't know if I could at all. Would crime be the same and the punishment be there at all.
What if you killed someone that wasn't a zombie? What then you killed an innocent person. Just because you feared.
I hope it never happens because all I see is people having an excuse to commit murder and getting off scott free.
YES I BELIEVE ZOMBIES ARE POSSIBLE...IN FACT WAS'NT THE MOVIE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 1950 VERSION BASED ON ACTUAL FACTS,, LOOK IT UP, YOU WOULD BE SUPRISED ON WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED..
I think the idea of zombies is totally absurd.
And there's no point saying they "live among us" when they're known as the undead.
Zombies absurd?
Yes, I suppose if you're speaking of zombies from movies or zombies of folklore, the idea is absurd. Just as the idea of vampires is absurd.
This all depends on what your personal definition of what a zombie or vampire is.
"folklore" - yes, the context in which I meant it, and the context in which I assumed the original idea was derived from.
Folklore, myths, legends, stories and then we get into make-believe.
But there's no point in trying to dispute this: Because after all, there are people that actually think they're vampires/werewolves. ;P
In a medical sense, there's nothing to say that people can't be declared zombies when they awake from a coma or when they've been clinically declared dead for a minute or so.
But they don't call them "zombies", the people that wake up after that are "miracles".
Oh, I agree with both of your statements completely.
The point I was making was that the idea of zombies is not absurd. It all depends on what definition you go by. I don't go by the dictionary, folklore or film definitions.
Like may have said here, there are different types of "zombies". Ones that walk amongst us, not thinking or doing anything on there own. Therm theres the possible out break of a super virus turning everyone into mindless flesh eating zombies. My thoughts at least.
Its sad to think that there are actually people out there that can't think on their own.... i know someone like that.... wont do a think for himself.... it's quite sickening.
Going by my definition, zombies are highly intelligent, free thinkers.
I wouldn't consider someone a zombie because they don't think for themselves. Those people are just stupid.
There are many zoned out shells of human beings walking around here so...yes. I would have to say zombies do exist. Just not in the movie monster type sense.
People are very fascinated with "monsters", so much they want to claim to BE them. Movie monsters are just that...for the movies. However the possibilites of bizzare and crazy mind controlling outbreak, i don't see that as impossible in the least.
