What is your view on immortality? Do you believe in immortals? That it is even possible? And most important would you take the chance to be an immortal? What effects do you believe it would have on ones mind/life?
I believe immortality to be a gift and a curse all together. The wondrous gift of experiencing lifetimes upon lifetimes, learning endlessly. Watching the changes of life and the world. Yet having to watch those you love die, never being able to get close to someone for fear that eventually they will also be gone with time.
I believe if there are immortals they do not walk around boasting of there immortality.
If I was given the chance to be an immortal but I would be the only one I wouldn't, as much as eternal life appeals to me I couldn't stand by and watch my loved ones perish.if given the ability to change a few people than absolutely.
I'm sure immortality has its effects on people. And is definitely not for all,I'm sure it would drive a lot of people mad. The loneliness, the constant change of the world around them, while they remain the same.
Immortality definitely has its' appeals, and definitely its' drawbacks. I'm torn honestly. To see the world change, to see where things go, the discoveries made. the people you'd meet... that's a heady temptation. But I think it would be boring after awhile. I think I would rather live exceptionally long, but not immortal. For example, a lifespan of perhaps three or four hundred years, but not forever. Or have the type of immortality that I wouldn't age or ever die of natural causes, but could still die if say, I got shot or my head chopped off. Then maybe, because if I ever grew tired of it, I would know there was a way out. I wouldn't want the kind of immortality that you could never die.
~Darken
immortals do exist somewhat, there is a certain creature, maybe a sea creature that can live or exist forever.
I believe that some creatures may have immortality. Such as unicorns, dragons, ect. It is said that dragons never were recorded to have died of natural causes, that all their deaths came by man.
As for people in general, I'm not entirely sure about it. I think if I became or am immortal then it would be sad to see people die off all the time. You could never really get close to anyone because to you they would only be around for a short time.
I suppose the upsides to being an immortal would be to see how the earth would change and how the society would change. We would get to see the rise and fall of power and all the cities in their glory. It would be cool to see it all like that.
All and all I am not sure I would want it. Like just because it would be a very lonely journey, but then I guess you could travel with companions..but just never get close to them. I think I would rather die and just see everything that way if I could, more freedom that way as our souls never die.
if ppl were imortal, the effects would be terrible to this planet.... we as a human race are a cancer to this planet... along with over population... so if we were to live for ever, we would need to sterilize the human race and completely move away from this plannet as soon as we have the technoledgy
i agree, humans are a cancer and are already over-populating the planet and they are not even immortal, if they became immortal, then the earth is doomed...yet again, if humans became immortal, i would murder those who breed to restore the balance.
I don't think she meant the entire population. I just think she meant what if you were or became immortal then what would you do.
However..I agree with you on if the entire population became that way, it would be terrible.
i watch the world and see where mankind's next step is, if they try to colonize other planets, then bad things are going to happen to them, humans have ruined this world, i will not allow them to take over another planet to ruin.
i wouldnt be able to handle it....i mean its almost like infinite knowlegde, meaning time usually repeats itself so it would be cool to determine what happens next. although if it were me...NAAAHHH lol id rather live my life as it is now. loneliness is a killer.
Science might be advancing in ways that make our lives more convenient, but I do not feel that humans will ever figure out the secret to long distance space travel, and even if they do, it won't be like they think. Other planets have things unknown to the science here on earth, things that could kill them, like the bacteria. If anything it would bring it back here. We were born on this planet, and this is where we all belong regardless of what happens to it. The earth will continue to change and kill as it sees fit. Eventually, all things die in this world.
It took hundreds of years to build an atmosphere on the earth, I don't think human kind is going to live that long to do it on mars or some other planet.
Even if it does happen, life finds a way to kill what is causing the dis-balance, either it be from this planet or the next. It just takes time.
Well as i said earlier i do not believe Immortality is something everyone would be able to adjust to. There are many aspects to it which have to be considered depending on the person granted such a thing.
For instence if given the ability as the traditional 'Vampire' to go about turning any persons into an immortal than surely the world is doomed for failure.
We must also see the mind set of the person. Those who would use there immortality for good, those would simply live out there lives doing as they wish without really engaging in the outside world. Than of course the unstable mind which will reek havoc upon society.
Yes the human race has destroyed the earth, but than we cannot blame them as a whole. In my view it seems as though there is just a over populance of ignorance and stupidity circulating the globe which does not only exstend to the mundane society.
If you were to choose immortality, what would you do for the rest of eternity? Would you just live out your days, experiancing and learning endlessly or influence the world in some way?
If I had absolutely no choice, then I wouldn't interfere unless I seen something happening, like people doing things they shouldn't. I would then clear that out with out being seen, and if I had to..get rid of the evidence so that people would fear getting into it again, like especially if it harmed the earth and the way of things. Other then that I would just seclude my self, or perhaps live out in the open.
I wonder if being immortal also means you don't have to eat? If that is the case then it would be much easier to live with out having to worry about money and stuff like that.
immortality is an immunity to natural death such as aging, poison, illness etc, a lot of fools confuse immortality with invincibility as they say " vampires(or some other creature) are not immortal because they can be killed" immortal is immunity to natural causes type of death but they can be murdered, those who are invincible cannot be killed.
so immortals will not need to eat, though they will be very hungry.
Immortality....it's not what it's cut out to be...constantly moving from place to place, living through relationships that have to be cut short, changing identities every so many years, changing jobs....sigh...unless you're going to be immortal on another world, it just doesn't pay to be it here.
I'd probably go exploring somewhere that most people would never go. Just absorb nature in all of its glory. I would probably want to stay away from any type of community. It would be better that way, only seeing things from a distance.
excellent response, nature is the answer. too many people try to control the world and deny the natural order, if they had immortality, then this world would go down the drain and if the population had to be controlled then it would be the government who decides who lives and who dies.....i will never allow that,
Earth is wondrous place for explorations and there is a bit of everything here... to be an immortal here, well that depends on the character of the individual. To be stand alone and easily amused is a must to live forever. To pursue without wavering enlightnment in all its forms is also something not to be scoffed at. Sooner or later mankind is going to spread into the stars... this is inevitable. Consider this.
There is no immortality for humans or any beings. The only things that are immortal in essence are the works we sow, whether good or bad ( the worst and best only last ), the great work of arts ( be it written or drawn or sculpted ), the principles of life, no matter how twisted they may be.
here they are, this s from wikipedia
Tardigrades
Tardigrades, otherwise known as "water bears", are highly resilient microscopic animals. Capable of surviving extremes such as heat, radiation, drought, and even the vacuum of space by going into suspended animation, where their metabolism slows to near zero and they simply wait out the harsh conditions until the environment is more favorable. The Russian Space Administration is planning a mission to launch water bears at Phobos to study the scientific theory of panspermia.[6]
Bacteria
Bacteria are said to be biologically immortal, but only at the level of the colony. An individual bacterium can easily die. The two daughter bacteria resulting from cell division of a parent bacterium can be regarded as unique individuals or as members of a biologically "immortal" colony. The two daughter cells can be regarded as "rejuvenated" copies of the parent cell because damaged macromolecules have been split between the two cells and diluted. In the same way stem cells and gametes can be regarded as "immortal".
Hydra
Hydras are a genus of simple, fresh-water animals possessing radial symmetry and no post-mitotic cells. The fact that all cells continually divide allows defects and toxins to be "diluted". It has been suggested that hydras do not undergo senescence (aging), and as such are biologically immortal.[7] However, this does not explain how hydras are consequently able to maintain telomere lengths.
Jellyfish
Turritopsis nutricula is a small (5 millimeters (0.20 in)) species of jellyfish which uses transdifferentiation to replenish cells after sexual reproduction. This cycle can repeat indefinitely, potentially rendering it biologically immortal. It originated from the Caribbean sea, but has now spread around the world.
Lobsters
Older lobsters are more fertile than younger lobsters. Some scientists have claimed that they could effectively live indefinitely, barring injury, disease, capture, etc. See Lobster longevity.

Not the Sandbox - Keep to the topic, and the chat out of the thread. Thank you.
yes i believe in immortals- like say God, but i wouldnt want to be immortal. i would want to die and go to heaven *laugh*
I believe that immortality would be a boon and a burden all at once. I believe that immortality would be useful in watching the world progress and then predicting the future cause mankind consists of too many idiots, sorry for all of you out there who might not be too smart but its true. If mankind discovered the secret to immortality, we would need to: A. have no more children. B. Leave Earth to colonize other planets in... say the next decade. I do not believe anything is immortal naturally, key word ANYTHING. Nothing that currently exists and is living on this planet is immortal. That doesn't mean that out in the universe there isn't something or someone (not necessarily human or humanoid) that is immortal. I think it is an interesting concept, but there are too many problems which exist with being immortal.
As long as Immmortality was not tedious and boring I'd be fine with it.
i guess it depends on how u define immortality. cuz i think it extends past the material world. if our memories r kept alive, then we r therefore immortal in a way. in materialistic terms though not even vampires r really immortal cuz they can be killed. and even gold evaporates away with radioactive decay. i can't think of anything in this realm of time that lives forever on physically. perhaps this is an element of time itself
theres a star fish thats sort of imortal
if it gets attacked by a predator it clings on to a rock and turns it self back into a baby and scientist believe it can do that for as long as it wants
yes, i posted about the star fish and others, bacteria is also biologically immortal. look somewhere above in the thread.
I believe that at one point the immortals walked this world, but as the human race advances in science and the expansion of life for their own greed, immortality now closer for humans is no longer attainable in the same sense. Immortality is now just a legend destroyed by human greed and diseases.
any way thats just my thought on it.
I'd have to say that immortality would definitely be a gift and a curse at the same time. It would be nice to go through time to see how things change and discover new things but at the same time seeing certain things change would also be hard because of being used to certain things being how they were and maybe having a hard time adapting. And having to see everyone you love age and die would be hard too.
I believe that it's possible immortals live and are amongst us. Though they don't go around saying they're immortal all the same. And not only immortal body-wise but those that have immortal souls and keep getting reborn over and over again. (I should know enough of that as I've uncovered a few past lives of my own so it is hard to grasp some things of the current times since I keep longing for the past for some things and return to a simpler time.)
As for the chance to be immortal body-wise, it would be interesting to say the least. I'm definitely torn on whether I would like to or would not like to. I'd like to because I'd like to see how the world changes as time goes on and like to travel and all that and see the world as I am now. But I would also not like it because some changes I don't necessarily like, like seeing friends come and go and all that. I have a hard enough time seeing my high school friends leaving me now so that my only friends now are just a few new ones I've met in person in town while the rest are online (though I still love them as very good friends all the same).
It would certainly have a huge effect on one's life to see the changes as the world goes. It might be hard to adapt for some because of their mindset being focused on what they grew up with and being hard to accept certain changes.
r0yaltysfin3st,
Anyone who says they are immortal... a single life that goes on for an infinite amount of time, is someone who doesn't know the true nature of how the vampyre soul works and thus is Not Vampiric!!
They are either uninformed or simply a role player looking for attention. The image of the undead immortal vampyre doomed to walk the Earth for all time is nothing more than the literary workings of the last few centuries. In all honesty that image does a great dis-service to those who are trying to teach others about who we are and ultimately who you really are.
I have said this before and I will say it again now, when it comes to Vampirism I like to think of it as sorta like a trip to the supermarket.
You have a store with all of it's products lined up on the shelves... think of that stuff as information.
After you have taken it home and you cook it up and consume it, that's when the information becomes knowledge. Only once you have consumed the information and have had the ability to reflect on how it fueled you can you begin to see if it was truly empowering or not.
That is the moment information and knowledge become wisdom.
The problem is that if you start out with junk information you end up with junk wisdom.
In short who you ask is equally as important as what you ask. After all you wouldn't ask a Buddhist monk about Wiccan rituals would you?? No you'd look for a real Wiccan to speak to. Yet so many people will openly listen and absorb some of the most ridiculous comments people say on the internet.
It really is why so many who are on the verge of an awakening falter.
people also confuse immortality with invincibility, so that doesn't help. immortal would mean live forever but can still be killed, invincibility would mean living forever and being unable to be killed, i certainly hope mankind doesn't find a way to get those whether through science or something else. There is good reason why all life has to die, to make room for the new generations of life.
Severus,
I completly iagree with your point of the posers who are walking this world claiming to be hundreds even thousands of years old. They set a bad image to those who are newly awakened and give bad impressions of our community the rest of the world. Which is a primary reason why we are looked down upon by so many. Because these people are so enthralled with the fantasys they read about and see on tv they had crossed the threshold from reality to fiction.
That is why it is very important to know who you are speaking and learning from. Why we need dedicated and educated individuals to help the newly awakened or seekers so that the right imformation is given and there heads aren't filled with fantasys and nonsence.
I'm not claming immortality in flesh form is a reality just your ideas on it. If you would take the oporunity to become immortal in a bodily form.
Well on the subject of immoratlity theres a reason you do not see nor hear from people or should I say creatures that are immortals. For some very simple reasons first the goverment would do studies and disect them like animals to find out what allows them to be said way another they would be hunted for this "gift" if you would like to call it and be used like many beings before. If you had this "gift" thrusted upon you would you share it with the world? People would call you crazy other people would try to harm you. Would you want millions of people at your doorsteps?
Precisly, i feel if there is such a thing as immortality the one who is will not go galivating about boystering there immortality. With the way humanity is one would know better, especially one who has lived through so many decades and millenia. So you must understand when you have people anouncing they are hundreds even thousands of years old and remain the age they appear they shall be ridiculed because if they truly were i sincerley doubt they would announce it so freely
I do agree with you madam. But you must also realize that we are in a new era of more acceptance. Also that for someone who has had years and years of being alone that sooner or later with our technological advances that they would start to appear via the internet first. Of course I am not saying that everyone who claims to be a imortal its truly that, I'm just saying maybe you have already spoken to someone who is in fact imortal. Also have you ever thought that maybe they just age alot slower? That this gift maybe in fact a higher state of evolution.
Not ay all, but I also feel.one who is indeed as old.as they claim to be would be atad bit more humble. And certainly know about there own history. It is quite histerical when people claim to be all these completly differwnt people in there past especially when 2 or more of them were alive duringthe same period. These rolplayers are the reason that there is such skepticism amoungst us all.
I think immortality is possible, maybe not in the same body but our spirit moves on after death.
I agree madam. But it is quite easy to pick out the fakers. Most who claim to be thousands of years old are merely hormonal gothic teenagers. Which is one of my many reasons for not joinning said lifestyle. With time we must adapt. I do not believe any imortals are going to walk around in goth clothing with there fangs out. People would just laugh at them and call them crazy. Histroy is key when it comes to weeding out the liars. Most of them if not all will not be able to recall the century they say the lived in such as the most simple things like art, wars, rulers, etc.
what has goths got to do with immortality? nothing, they are just a pain in the backside. no offence to those who goths. fangs have nothing to do with immortality either, that is vampires, yes vampires are immortal...in the movies and books. but an immortal could be anything that just happens to live forever. an immortal would not be necessarily humble, in fact being alive for all those years and having untold knowledge would make one pretty arrogant and full of it, and being lonely would not be entirely true either, they could have been married at many points in their lives etc. of course no one would really know because as far as the world is concerned, immortality in humanoid life is just fiction...thankfully. humans with their short life has done enough damage, if they were to live forever....goodbye planet earth.
If you ask me the fact that mundanes don't remember their past lives is the reason the world is messed up in the first place.
If they did the average Joe wouldn't make so many mistakes from life to life or they at least would have evolved enough to the point which they would have some level of civility at a bare minimum. Don't get me wrong I'm Not trying to say that every life doesn't have it's own set of challenges for us too, I'm just saying that facing an army of ass clowns on a daily basis won't be one of those challenges.
Do I believe in immortality? Not to sure. I think there is a chance immortality could be possible, but it's a very slim chance...
I'd take up the chance to become immortal if it was an option for me only if I stopped aging.... I wouldn't want to be 60 and immortal lol. That would suck. For some it would be taxing on their minds and for others not so much... Depends on the person and their mental state.
Immortallity?... I have always been rather intrigued by this subject. I can't however say my belief on it. religous beliefs have stated that our souls are immortal. As far as our physical body... no I do not believe it is possible to be immortal...Yet. I do believe the advances in mordern science may prove useful in the succession of immortality. Not anytime soon I don't thimk but we shall see.
I think of immortality like this if you are never forgotten and you are remembered for years to come and so forth then you have become immortal and have achieved Immortality. Think of all the people who we learn about in history they are all immortal because we remember who they are and what they did so they live on. That is immortality.
I think immortality would drive somebody insane, being alone, never having anybody for a very long time
heh being alone isn't that bad, some people are just annoying enough to the point you can rip out your hair, and really, immortality doesn't mean being alone, it just means they have to change companions when the current one starts to whither and get old.
anyway, immortality in sentient life (specifically humans) would be a disaster. humans just have to accept they are going to die sooner or later, whether by age or death by another. Death is inevitable.
I must agree with you Maleficus about certain creatures being immortal, for those also being the creatures of myths and legends like the dragons and such and in fairytales, they have a certain lore that connects with a lot of peoples interests. I do not believe that there can be a complete doubt about their existance however it would be very possible that they could in fact be immortals.
Immortality for me is something that sound good but I want to iive life naturally,
going along with Maleficus' post, i'm afraid i couldn't be satisfied with that. Being alone would be pretty hellish for me, but that's mainly because i bore easily...
Also, to have someone as permanent as you are, who understands your points like you understand theirs, someone you can run circuits with - mentally speaking - at the same pace... that would be nice. If i had that, i wouldn't be willing to lose it, or swap it out for another companion.
Essentially.... i couldn't live in the Indiana Jones/ James Bond Universe, where there's another damsel in distress during every new chapter of my existence.
That may just be because i wouldn't want to live forever, and i doubt there is anyone who has that potential...
Sure there's a slim chance that there is an immortal out there, but they've not been alive for all that long if they're humanoid.
I would love to be immortal in one aspect. There is so much to see and learn.
However, in the Christian religion immortality was taken from beings. So, I guess, to me(if aliens decide to reveal themselves) I would absollutely keep an open mind about all religion. If God were a mad scientist, he is still God. How interesting it would be to learn if their beliefs and stories were similar. And how would that effect their religion? And if they are so superior, if that's why God has not allowed them to make absolute contact. Perhaps they have a closer relationship with their God.
Given that there are Immortals...would they find death a relief from an eternal existence?
We may look upon immortality as something dynamic and revolutionary, not knowing the full impact of it's pros and cons, not knowing or not caring, the latter would probably be more reasonable.
"Why, Gilgamesh, do you rove about?
The Life that you seek, you shall not find!
When the gods created Mankind
Death for Mankind they allotted;
Enduring Life they retained in their own keeping"
From The Epic of Gilgamesh
The Epic of Gilgamesh relates his (Gilgamesh) search for immortality. Two thirds of Gilgamesh was god one third was human and he did not want to die.
Anything that is eternal has got to be a bummer. But if you believe in reincarnation, isn't that a form of eternity?
not really as its another life with no memories of the previous one. to be immortal is to live forever and not constantly have a new body once you die which pretty much takes away from the "living forever" part.
Immortality? I do believe it is possible. In who I wouldn't know but let us hope the the humans never discover it, I happen to like this planet. To the fakers I give them my pity how could some fool even think as parading as something their not unfathomable.
So my view as a Hybrid is would I mind it, no but at some point I think it would make sence to just end it all.
being alive for all eternity and watching your loved ones die... i think i'd rather live normally
I don't believe there are Immortals in the physical sense, but there are Immortals in the Spirit sense. Our Spirits are immortal. That's the quest of every vampire now. To seek immortality.
I see no benefit in immortality, I see it as a curse solely I would give examples but in an attempt to curb an overly dramatic post ill cut it here and let you all ponder.
"Death gives us sleep, eternal youth, and immortality."
~ Jean Paul
Looks like without Death, one would not be an immortal!
There are some issues when one is an immortal. They'd have to battle severe boredom. The need for disguise would be immeasurable. Having to keep a low profile would be the ultimate aim of the vampire/immortal.
Yeap.
ha! everyone make excuses for not wanting immortality but in the end and if its offered, they will go for it. humans are a selfish and vain species, the idea of eternal life and youth would certainly grab their attention.
If i were ever to be immortal, it would piss me off. I plan to die young as it is, so to live forever would be a huge problem.
I believe its possible for immortals to exist, as far as immortality myself, I believe that i'd enjoy a prolonged life thoroughly life is far too short to phesibly enjoy or explore it all has to offer and i wouldn't mind seeing what the future has in store, however i don't believe i'd like to live forever, life is a test and a burden as it is, and while i believe im strong enough to embrace eternity i don't believe i would be willing
Well, this coming from someone currently battling brain cancer. Right now, I'd hope for 15-20 years (I'm 50). Will I succeed? I'd like to think so. This has brought me and my wife closer than ever and we take everyday as a miracle. As you grow older, time moves faster. I couldn't even imagine how fast if you were to live at 300 years.
yes,i believe in immortality.i am not immortal but i remember all of my past lives,so does that count to that category?
well the only way I figure I will be immortalized is when I die I will always have a web page in cyber space that tells about me
Immortality is na toughie for me especially if it was a physical phenomenon. What would the world bge like? A paradise or a pit?
Immortality as you said is a gift and a curse all at the same time. It's a gift because one would never die and could experience many things. It's a curse in the fact that you would watch your loved ones die over and over again. I can't say that I would like to be immortal because I doubt that I could bear the pain of losing my loved ones continuously through the years.
I beleave we are all immortals not just beings of thought but all beings of life it is simple physics and in every mythical story ever told we are beings of energy energy that must stay in motion as long as there is a force feeding it it will not stop the flow of energy is forever what we consume will one day be taken what is taken will one day be returned from the places of creation we shall return immortality is not somthing no group can ignore sure the body may die but dose it not become compost to feed another living animal that takes the smallest parts of the body into it's self and add the protines to its own then one day feed another animal that will do the same until you are returned from the dust now i wounder how much of a substance dose it take to hold a soul or even a peace of a soul a fragmented memory even
Do I believe that there are immortals? Yes. Do I believe that humans will EVENTUALLY unlock the secret to it? Unfortunately, yes. Would I like to be Immortal? Surprisingly, Yes. I have no one that I am particularly fond of here. I want to learn all I can if I was immortal. I would do all I could to improve myself, and my community, plus I could test the preconception that time heals all wounds. I would be able to witness huge leaps in technology, advanced technology, possibly like Faster-Than-Light propulsion systems, or colonization of another earth-like planet. There are so many aspects of life that I would explore if I were immortal.
Everything Alive is Immortal as "energy can not die or be created but merely changes form" (Albert Einstein). However I believe it in the form of Reincarnation as a human body is not designed to live longer than a few hundred years if we can ever achieve that with our science or alchemy. The Soul or Spirit however is Immortal as it is one of the purest forms of energy. However I believe eventually once we have reached our point of being we eventually will Evolve to the Spiritual Reals for the remainder of our Life. I do believe there are Spiritual beings however which can consume a soul and you life then will be forever there's. Sorry I am rambling again lol...
I don't know why a human would want to live forever. Watch while all the ones you love die and fade away just to keep living and loving and watching it happen again and again. Living for ever would be a very lonely existence unless everyone you cared for was trapped alive with you.
Only if we pass on our DNA do we live eternally or at least until man breathes his last breath.
Same excuse over and over " wah! we will be lonely, wah! our loved will die before our eyes!" boo-frickity-hoo! it won't stop them from taking it when offered though. mankind wants to survive forever and immortality is the ultimate way to survive even if it costs part of the world. Trees are cut down to make their lives easier and build nice comfy towns or cabins, so its not hard to see humans sacrificing others or the chance for a family to live forever.
Immortal,.... hours of fun walking infront of buses, chewing wires, teasing tigers , jumping into Lava, eating uranium or my favourite, taking a mile long ride down a Greenland sink hole....I suppose it is possible to keep oneself amused afterall.
you missed the part about what you can do to people... good or bad and what you can outlive. amusement is where you want to find it.
