I am curious as to the views of the users here about the meaning of life. If you think such a meaning exists, and if it does exist, what it would be.

I have my own deep-rooted philosophy on this concept. I’ll share it as the thread progresses.

Talk about connection... Dayryn and I were just discussing this on IM.

In the short version, I believe the meaning of life is the journey, the lessons learned, not having regrets, and developing yourself away from society. It's not a specific event or achievement, but the experiences gleaned that constitutes life.

I became true to myself when I stopped worring about what other's thought of me, and when I stopped being a sheep. My biggest hang up is hearing, "That's the way it is..." No!! Think for yourself and do what is best for you.

I have no regrets, and I love who I am, and I am in a euphoric space. My trek wasn't an easy one; I wouldn't change a thing because that would not make the person I am now.

I am riled up now!! My passions are stirred, and my thoughts are bouncing.

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln, the great orator of his time, who expressed the meaning of life with such passion and charisma that it cannot be ignored.

He said, "Be excellent to each other... and party on dudes!"

But perhaps, the most succint answer to the ultimate question, of life, the universe and everything, is of course... 42.

The answer in fact not being what is important at all, but it is in the life you live that helps you frame the right question.

Once upon a time, I thought the point of life was to enjoy it. To be a kid, carefree and innocent taking in the new blessings I found everyday.

When I was a teenager, I used to think that life was a load of crap, wrapped in pain and heartache. To be lonely in a crowd of loners. To be different and to be special, if possible.

When I graduated college, I wanted to make a life for myself by getting a good job, a nice place to live, finally find someone I could love, settle down and raise a family.

When I had the sitcom life, it became a Single-Income, Three Children, Oppressive Mortgage nightmare of serving everyone else's needs because I thought that if I could make everyone else happy, that made me happy, and that was still a better life than what I thought was the alternative.

Now I live the alternative. I'm separated, but living with a wonderful girlfriend. I'm estranged from my children, my old life, but I still look forward to living those days I can spend with my kids, helping them live carefree and innocent, taking in all the blessing we find together, with my girlfriend, and my friends.

Life is what life does.

The closest you'll ever come to understanding it is when you ask your final question. Whoever can answer the question for you, will finally bring you peace.

From the words of Doc Holiday in the movie Tombstone, ... "There is no normal life, theres just life."

Which I believe is true. I don't believe we have some predestined map put before us that we can merely walk on and get to point B without an upward glance.

Life is hard, mainly by mistakes made by our own poor choices. These mistakes do two things to each of us.

(1.) You learn how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and march on. Taking what you just learned, and mixing it with the other past experiences to one day finding the right combination that leads to your own individual idea of happiness.

(2.) You blame others for your failures, never pointing to yourself. This way of thinking leads to bitterness, loneliness, and misery. To fall in this snare spells certain doom.

You have to take the bad things that happen to all of us, and what may be devestating to me, might be trivial to another. The same rule for happiness applies as well. What makes one happy, whether it be money, fame, love, family, career or whatever may be unimportant to someone else.

Ever notice how some people seem to magically walk through life unscathed and always live on the brightside of life. It seems the good things find them while some seem to always find dead ends and pitfalls?

Is it a case of good/bad luck? Having faith?

Let's face it my friends, we are all on this site based on the damned.

Something in our lives led us all to this lifestyle. Please don't read into that, I am not saying we are all bad or damned.

The people I have talked with are indeed full of life

We all simply chose to walk down a darker path, not an evil one. But to be fair, this site is not "Angels R Us."

my thoughts on the true meaning of life are as follows...
Everyday that i awake and smell the air, my eyes open, i am alive...
However that day ends up it's always a good day no matter what has occured along the way.
Try and look for the good in yourself and others don't dwell up on the pitty things that you will soon pass upon... Find strength in goodness and no matter what path you choose to walk upon you will be heading in some direction at least.
Forgive those that choose not to forgive and be happy that you are stronger... be happy that you enjoy the path that have chosen...
Last But not least... Just Enjoy Every Second of Every Minute of Every Hour of Every Day !!!!

The meaning of life...

I do think it is a little bit arrogant to assume there must be some grand plan behind the wonders we find on this earth. Humans all too often have a need to quantify the things they see around them. This question is no exception, and if you are a student of philosophy you know that this question has been pondered for many millennia.

I do not believe in the traditional Judeo-Christian mythos of creation. I do not believe we are always being tested (at least not by a supreme deity). I believe we are here because we choose to be here. Our spirt has chosen our specific life-path and we are here because of it. We come to this earth plane to learn lessons that are not as easily learned in the other planes. That being said, the first question that comes to mind, is why can't these lessons be learned in the other planes?

I believe all of existence to be far more interconnected than we are able to conceive. This is no accident. Imagine an existence where you had personal individuality, yet at the same time were connected to everything that has ever, and will ever, exist. How would you ever experience solitude or true individualism? You would not be able to. You would need a forum in which to explore these concepts. This is earth.

Our spirits separate themselves from the collective and come here (This is actually an illusion. You are never truly separated from the multi-verse). Divisions soon became necessary, as more individualism was desired. This gave way to the sexes. It later gave way to the races. Every part of existence on earth is geared toward solitude. This is why we come here. This is what we want to experience.

It's not easy. Our spiritual instinct is to be with others. I am not just referring to mating. Although there are those among us who have found peace in sexual solitude, the number of us who have found complete peace in complete solitude is far less. And for me, this is the meaning of life. To be able to exist at complete peace with only oneself.

The Meaning of Life According to Moreish...

This is purgatory.. and we are here by choice on a soul type of holiday.. placed where we chose to be, to have a different experience each time we visit humanity.. or rather living life.

Ultimatly what we achieve here makes us grow, learn and expand as souls.

But in the end, it's just a soul holiday....

The song by Robbie Williams, defines my feelings for a long time... I'm not afraid of dying, I just not ready/don't want to (memory fadding... very late at night)

Sooooooooooo..... The meaning of life... enjoy it.. grab it with both hands and scream along this roller coaster... for it truly is the ultimate ride.... and as mentioned before.. it's what you make of it.

I feel the meaning of life is that we aren't supposed to know why we were here till we die, only through death can we see our purpose come to fruition. The greatest mystery of all is....why are we here. That is the wrong question. Sometimes having purpose and living are seperate things. Some are here to live, others to die, all to love and no one knows why.

i honestly think that the meaning of life is to pass on what we know to the next genaration so that they dont make the same mistakes. or that the meaning of life is there is no meaning

I think the meaning of life is Green grass. yep thats right, green grass. that is what everyone wants deep down, that is what wars are started over, what people marry for( oddly enough, what people die for) and the best thing to make love on. If everyone had green grass, the world would be an absolute utopia.

well i dont believe in a definition of life.
I just know that everything happens for a reason, leading to my final destiny, so I enjoy the moment for what it is and could be.

Life can be a gift or a curse it depends on hoy you view it. The meaning of life is to live and not wory about those kind of questions to much becaus if we knew the answer would there realy be a point in living?

I actually wrote a paper on this in my Junior year English class. It sorta goes along with what twilight_lex said. My opinion, all we're here for is to make life better for the next generation. Improve technology, jobs, opportunities, etc... When in the long run, we're failing anyways. We're using up all the Earth's resources by doing so. We're only here for a short amount of time when compared to the rest of the universe, so by making life better, we're "supposedly" immortalizing the Human Being. That's what it all boils down to. Immortalization. No species wants to die out. They will struggle to survive. Ok I'm done preaching lol

the meaning of life is different for us all; it depends on your definite purpose for being here. think long and hard about your life's definite purpose then commit to it and never give up until you achieve it.

I would think that the meaning of life is simply to live it....to experience and to learn from it before you travel on to the next,but the main thing is to learn because if you ever stop learning then the only thing left for you in life is politics.

Although hardships and difficulties may arise on our journey through 'life', we must keep in mind that all the events that occur in our life are components of the indivuals we become in the long run. Life is like a challenge we all must overcome which all of us deal with in many different ways. As we grow older we gain knowledge and wisdom from our previous experiences. Although the meaning of life might never be discovered, we all reach some type of understanding from all of humanity. Sure, it may have its downsides and sometimes ugliness...but doesnt everything? Coping with the pros and cons is what takes us to the next level in discovery and enlightment. Life or better yet, humanity along with all its imperfections, has many beautiful aspects that make imperfection perfect and unique....for example, love, trust, truth, sacrifice, happiness...feeling all these kinds of emotions is what makes the journey a wonderland of paradise, in my opinion. You might say that i'm a dreamer...but my dreams are my reality, and that is what makes the meaning of my life worthwile...the ability to believe and explore beyond different boundaries despite all obstacles obstructing your path...

lol Mine is gonna be pretty simple. We were brought here to survive and learn things, to remember, and be human. I don't believe the true meaning of life is THAT complicated. Man tends to make it that way.

to me the meaning of life, is to know as much as i can, and understand and finally be at peace with me and who i am. To gain knowledge, love, happiness, and peace one day. I wonder if that'll ever happen...

I agree with mist. We are here born and die. We are basically meant to reproduce but the joy of life would be that its here for you to do whatever you want whether its sit and do nothing or do everything humanly possible. We can indulge ourselves in religion or work or nature or ourselves. I think my true meaning in life is to help other people. And of course our existence surly changes other peoples lives as well.

I think that each and every person has his own meaning of life what depends on whats important to him and what are his dreams and wishes.
For me it wud be to have friend and to fell that u r loved...
To live the way I will never be sorry about what i have done or what I havent done...
And more others....Its really sad when one cant find any reason or meaning of life when it gives us so many choices...

I am strongly into hinduism beliefs and i believe in karma and reincarnation. i believe that what you do comes back to you with a twist. i sort of combined the hindu beliefs with wiccan beliefs so what you do comes back to you times 3. i also believe that you come back to life as a different being (human or not) after a brief stay in heaven or hell.

I think its just to live.. and describe it on your dieing bed. How ever you describe it is the meaning of life to yourself, its all the matter did you live life to the fullest? Did you try to love and return love? Did you do anything to make yourself happy? We all have a differnt way of seeing things thus differnt meaning. ^^ You wont know till your dead so why worrry? Just live it as you would if youd die the next day. ^^

i had the key once but forgot it before i could tell my friend. It had something to do with finding the truth by taking from each thing to make a whole. And to carry on this truth through your offspring. Its a hard shell to crack i think you have to get around the bullshit of the world first

that's pretty interesting blood, because it reminds me of a message i got once a long time ago. It's about taking pieces and making them whole like you said to create something..... perhaps it is a truth, that i am not sure of yet but pretty funny how that came up.

but seriously tho i think that for some people there life has a greater meaning. i mean look at the pope and mother thersa and princess Di. they all were not meant to be here and have a meaningless life. they were choosen by a greater power to do something spectacular and amazing with there life that others before them had not. so i do believe for some there life has greater meaning but for the rest of us that aren't as fortunate....we are here to help those and inspire them adn guide them and give them someone to help. and so and so forth. i think yinz get the pic.

I think there is no direct meaning to life....

meaning is inserted into ones life by making conections and by careing about things. If one cares about nothing or no one there is no meaning and hence there is suffering. Meaning is a side effect of being human, things and people gain meaning as one begins to care about them and hence a lot of meaningful things are intangible and ephemeral like pride and love.

I guess I see evidence of this style of thinking everywhere, 'cause if you ask a person what they think of something that they have never been exposed to before a lot of the time the awnser is "wtf is that? and who cares?" but if you give them a few moments to ruminate over it they suddenly become insightful and find meaning in the most mundane things.

As I once heard "TO AWAKEN IS TO SLEEP AND TO LIVE IS TO DEATH." I am still trying to understand this meaning. I believe it's part of the meaning of life. So far I think it states that when we are a wake living it all seems to be a dream a magic place, a place were we can be and do anything our soul's desires. At the same time we live we are dying. "Born to die and live to your souls content" that is my meaning of life right now !!
