What is your opinion of the Vampire Academy books by Richelle Mead?
I haven't read them, but judging by the covers they are probably just more poorly written vampire books aimed at the same crowd as the Twilight series. No offense.
I haven't read them either, but the synopsis kind of reminds me of the TV series 'Vampire High' which was on U.K tv a few years back. I might grab the first book in the library when I have time to give it a try.
Is the series still ongoing or have they been discontinued?
If you want to escape the bounds of your reality, they are a good read.
They're alright. A little hard to get in to at first and if you like to speed read you might want to slow down. Miss a couple of details and you tend to get lost in what's going on.
I found the first one interesting and the rest awful. The main character, Rose, is fine, but the entire plot irks me. The weak decisions made, the Jersey-shore forbidden romances, the convenient plot devices... They are good books to read in between something serious.
I do have to give kudos for the world Mead created. I enjoyed the background of each of her characters and thought them all very well developed. I could have done without all of the meaningless romances littering the plot lines.
i think there really good books. but i like to read any thing wit vampires in.
i have read them and to be honest they are very similar to the house of night novels
I've heard from reviewers that they're no less fanciful tales just as Harry Potter
Before you read vampire related novels find out what genre they wrote in. I write Paranormal romances and so there will be love scenes but I don't want mine to be erotica so they are not explicit and a teen or adult could read them. Fiction is just that and it can be anything the author dreams up. I enjoy the Twilight Saga personally. I don't look for the very best writer when I read. I look for a good storyteller. There are all types of stories out in the paranormal/fantasy/horror area. Just because there are vampires in the storyline, it is not a given they will be horror stories or full of blood and guts. There is a market for all types of stories with a variety of paranormal beasties in them. I haven't read these books because to be perfectly frank there are so many books in this topical area. I don't judge another writer because some so called well written books have been boring to me. No writer can please everyone but rather than put the writer down if you don't like their story find one that you do. It's just a matter of taste.
Sinistra that's what I told people who are twilight fans, but they still take some of it as fact. I'm gappy they're not members here
I've read all 6, plus one of the spinoffs...loved them! IMO Richelle Mead is one of the better writers of young-adult paranormal romance. I read somewhere that they are making a film.
I agree with Seshat's assessment on them.
While at times the plot runs, she spins it into a good ending. I haven't had time to finish reading the series, but I have gotten more than half way through it and have every book and plan on finishing it after the new year.
It can be comparable to HoN series, but only in a small aspect of the "exclusive academy" part. IMHO I like them. My youngest sister who is a preteen reads them and while there are some aspects not always suitable for youngings, it's not incredibly graphic in erotica so it's something we can read and discuss.
I think, as with any genre, you have to go into reading it without having any expectations of it being one of the "Dracula" type of books. Nowadays vampire novels are setting themselves apart from each other in different ways and in order to appreciate Mead's writing and story telling, one must understand that.
I personally think as far as a vampyre novel these are very good. They have a little magic involved in them. But as far as my opinion extends I would say that is better than the "Twilight" books. If not for anything other than that they don't sparkle.
If you want a good book to pass the timethen it is for you, if you find easy reading boring them I recommend you do not read it.
I am not one to read these types of novels as they never keep my attention for long. I tend to enjoy fiction that has a more reality baseline.
they are cute...not anything to take seriously but something i found entertaining (if aimed at teenaged girls lol)

they are half way decent books but personally i prefer the house of night books
They're actually decent. They're certainly a cut above trash like Twilight.
I've only read the first few chapters of the first book, and heard what some of my friends have to say about. I also think it just sounds like another twilight :/
As long as there's nothing from the perspective of Twilight or Vampire Diaries, I will not only read them, I'd encourage others to do so.
They're nothing like Twilight or VD. For starters, they're written by a decent author.
I have read the Vampire Academy series, the Vampire Diaries series, and the House of Night series, along with the Twilight series, and to me they are all pretty much the same, different talents (if thats what you want to call them), but the romances are pretty much the same... those taboo/forbidden romances, but they are all good series
I don't like it. It just didn't interest me. Nothing can beat the old Vampire novels.
great as entertainment however certainly not a guide for accurate Vampire information
I don't think a lot of the series are meant to be informative about the .lifestyle. They are just another form of fantasy world that people enjoy. Much like Twilight, Morganville Vampires, Blackdagger Brotherhood, so on and so forth.
As a writer myself, I find The Vampire Academy series to be quite compelling to the younger reader. Now for adults like myself, they are a bit out there and far fetched, but aren't ALL vampire novels like that? They are stories, they are not true, and it doesn't matter if your audience is an adult or not.
And they sure did make the author some money, so don't knock it. Writing is a very difficult thing to do, especially getting published and keeping the interest of your readers for years to come. And I believe Richelle has been keeping her readers interest for a while now.
I found them very interesting and a good read. Was interesting the way they portrayed vampires versus common, mainstream portrayal of a vampire.
I love this series. Rose and Dimitri are a perfect couple. I have her last book and both of her stories invoking her other character. I've enjoyed it more then the twilight series.

I don't really seem to care for it at all.. not my taste.
I love them. Their really good. I happen to personally own the last book in the series, and two from other spin off of The Vampire Academy series. :) I think Richelle Mead is a great author. :)
But, don't take my word for it.
