The more I look around, the more I see people still believing that Anne Rice and White Wolf made the rules on vampires. I see the use of clan names from Vampire, The Maquerade. I notice that Anne Rice is one of the biggest topics around. Vampires were here before them. My only question is, where do we draw the line that seperates fact from fiction? When will we move away from the stories and games and realize that there is more to us than what we read? Please understand, I mean no disrespect to anyone. I just want everyones opinion.

I agree with you man. All i ever see is people going arouind calling themselves characters from books or movies. Vampyrism is NOT about any of that. That is stuff that writters and directers have created in hollywood. If you want to know the real stuff, you have to look in old documents and literature, which is rare to find due to its age. But if you dig deep enough you may shed some light on its truth's.

I understand completely. I am a fan of Anne Rice books, but they are just that... books. Nothing more. As far as White Wolf goes, I think that anyone who bases the fact that they are Vampires because the play that silly little game are completely idiotic. Anyone can come here for any reason and place whatever they want on there profile, as long as it abides by the rules set forth by Cancer and the Administrators, but this is my personal opinion.

I agree wholeheartedly Vampires where here well before both of these Mass Manufactured things came about. But as far as where the line is drawn that is a whole another question of a different sort that must be analyzed as being as how far are humans vampires and others of this nature want to think for themselves. The reason that most people quote Ann Rice and White Wolf is simply because they have forgotten to think for themselves. The line will be drawn when people relearn to think again.

Thank you. That's all I'm asking for are personal opinions. I do not have nor do I want to have the power to say it shouldn't happen. Everyone can choose what they want to put on there profile. That is what makes this site so great. Personal preference.

NomadHunter, I dont think your the only one who noticed that :)

A few days ago there was a documentation about 'Dracula' on Tv and it was really interesting. They actually tried to follow the path back on how the book of bram stocker got written. they had handwritten notices from stocker and went to romania and investigated. What came out was, that the book is based on vlad dragul whos name alos means dragon or evil. they found out that he never drank blood, just was a mass killer (lack of vocabulary) He actually didnt live in Transilvania, but Stockers Dracula does. The Romanians still have some traditions to keep the undead out of their houses and that is draw a cross at the doorframe of their houses with a piece of garlic. So that isnt just coming from movies, but its a over hundreds of year old tradition. They thought they can prevent an undead to come back from his grave by cutting out his heart and burn it on a crossway.

I guess all this traditions made the myth of what we see in movies about vampires now. Even if some might believe it, Anne Rice didnt invent the vampires a new :) She just writes really cool books based on what was already there for a few years. But after all, its just a book, nothing more, nothing less.

I understand what you're saying and I wish that people would go further back in history before them and see that their is so much more to learn! More and more people are consistantly thinking of vampires as something out of books and not the real thing! I just think they need to pull up more than whats in the world now and see that their is indeed more than what the have seen! Also more than what any person can know. "Knowledge is unforgivable it has no beginning or end, yet people think they know everything when indeed they know nothing."

Everyone on this site is drawn here for different reasons...Of course there are major differances between fact and fiction...But for each this might be different...Everyone has their own beliefs, and that is good...All views should be welcomed and explored...It really isn't about drawing a line...

You're correct. Maybe the question could have been worded a little better. But my point is, were we not vampires before White Wolf made their game? I don't remember there being any clan names before, like the ones that are found now. Again I mean no disrespect towards anyone. Your beliefs are just that, yours. I am not trying to change anyones way of thinking. I just want opinions.

We can draw a line depending on the person's mind.

I like very much vampires in fiction but am able to do a distinction.

It's cause for certain people Anne Rice and The Masquerade are The Bible.

So let them think of it until they'll wake up and realise the brutal reality.

i think that Anne Rice helped bring vampire more into the mainstream,
which is always a gud thing IMO

of course at the same time the integrity of the vampire legends is compremised in the general public.

in such a case i would say it's our duty to help others understand that there is way more to know about vampirism than what the fiction writters have said.

The myth and legend of vampires run deep in many ancient and morden cultures. Vampires have been described from hideous night hags to very seducers...from stupid and clumsy creatures to dark royalty..it really is depends how your want to portray them in novels

Rice makes them into romanitc creatures while King (salem's lot) makes them into stupid and heideous killers...it all depends

the reason i believe in anne rice is because when i did study old mythology and the egyptians and things it all seemed to fit...anne rice is a huge pert of this mythology and the reason that most vampires went in search of vampirism...but i also believe that they are taken for granted in that way...people say they know all about vampires and they've never watched the original nosferatu and they've never read the old litrature...and its so easy now - they've all been translated from lattin! when my family first started a love of vampires it all had to be translated and if it wasnt for my ex-best friends dad i wouldnt of been able to read half the texts that i have (he was a book collector and spoke lattin - molliesloft.com)

Good now we are getting somewhere.Look we all know some of the facts, but not all of them. I'm not asking for facts, just opinions. What we believe is the most important thing here. Now, I'm not saying anyone is wrong. All I'm asking is which part does each consider fact or fiction. I don't want arguements. I simply want your views on this. Believe me, I'm not saying who is right or wrong. Lord knows that I'm not the one with all the answers, but this discussion could bring some facts to light. In a way, maybe make others, myself included, learn a few new things.

I totally agree with you NomadHunter! I also mean no disrespect to anyone by no means but I am so tired of vampires being related to role playing games and some characters that Anne Rice conjured up to suit the people of the town she comes from. Don't get me wrong Anne Rice is a great writer but I am so tired of her stuff that I don't even look at the new books she comes out with. Again no disrespect to anyone but she has taken what started out as vampires and turned them into a bunch of gays and lesbians who partake in blood. The majority of vampires are not gay, lesbian, or bi-sexual. Anyone who has truly studied histroy books on vampires knows that but again she was catering to her "people" in her hometown. She has stereotyped her main vampires as being gay males! I have nothing against people's sexualities but I think that this stereotyping is now leading people to believe that everyone into vampires or who are vampires are bisexual or gay. I have seen this here because as soon as I joined the rave I had a few females flirting with me and I had to put in my profile that I am straight, even though it is clear that I have a boyfriend it seems that everyone assumes that if you are gothic or vampire now that you are automatically bi-sexual. I just wish we could go back to viewing the true vampire that existed from the start of time and stop sexually labelling someone just because they are one based on characters in fictional books.

I never really looked into the sexual part of it, but I guess that does have some standing on it. I wouldn't really say that vamps are portrayed as gay or bi though. Although in her books and films, they were quite the romantics. The sad thing is that we don't get too many romantics anymore. But thank you for your opinions.

The theories and stories of vampires far preceded both Anne Rice and White Wolf publications. In my opinion, I think both of these over glorified and misconstrued the entire lifestyle. Both have their entertainment value, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. I think it is incredibly pathetic that people treat Anne Rice novels as the bible of vampiric knowledge. There is a very good reason her books are listed under FICTION, although I do believe her books brought a little more understanding to the gothic subculture.

Respect or not people here take Vampire: The masquerade as law and others will take Vlad as the origin. Whether or not Vampires are real is another question, I feel that most here follow vampirism and that is the true nature of the beast.

I hold the same point of veiw as you do, brother. This is a site for the vampires of the modern world. The real vampires, not ficitonal characters.
As much as i wish the line to be drawn, it seems it will not happen. Some people try to hard to become what they read in books or see in movies than to really become what they are. Vampires, like normal people, have little rules on how they should be governed.

this really upsets me because this is where the human world gets their ammo for describing our race as fiction. Half of the human world goes around as rpg-ers living in a fictional very publicized world, giving everyone the inclination and assumption that there is no more to us no depth excet for what is in the minds of Anne Rice, etc. This is throughly frustrating!

the fiction stories will always have an influence on people, often those are the only sources they've had contact with regarding Vampires.

As long as we continue to educate them in what we know, they'll continue to learn.

Holy hell, someone actually posted about this. Something I've been preaching for some time now.

The line is this, people are in love with the romantic and monsterious ideas of "Vampires" not the actual fact of the real condition and the seriousness behind this affliction.

There are to many people who fall into the wrong crowd and never find the real aspect of what vampyrism is.
