This gets touched on in many of the threads but never really is fully explored in any of them. Exactly what is dark and what is light. Is it good vs. evil? Is it right vs. wrong? What does it really mean to you?

I see it as something rather different that most people do. To me dark is not “evil” nor is it “good”. It is just the opposite of light. It is serious, it is meaningful, and it is where we hide all those things that we don’t want others to see or even ourselves to see. It is taking the common things and twisting them so that they are the exception to the rule, and taking the exception and making it common. It is baring your soul to strangers and protecting yourself from your loved ones. It is learning to love all your flaws and making cracks in your perfections.

I have learned to love and accept my dark side, while most people never realize I even have one. They see me as someone that is almost always happy, and I do try to always find the good in any situation. But I do have that dark side and am only truly happy when I am friends with it. I write, but I can only write when I write from my dark side. If I try to write any other time it ends up being meaningless and doesn’t have the ability to touch people.

So what is Dark and what is Light to you?

Dark is the absence of light and makes it harder to see things. Light is the thing that the sun gives us as well as fire and electricity.

This question is so relative. Not only to the person, but the context. Light is illumination to me..strangely enough, I feel rather illuminated through darkness. In darkness I sense a place for me..somewhere I can call home no matter where I am. Where I am safe and connected to the world around me. The light is uncomfortable..I don't like being stared at for the wrong reasons.

Dark is what the majority populace shuns and is ashamed of. It is the natural pocesses. Death. Destruction. Chaos. Decay. That which changes, that which frightens those who wish that they did not exist. It is what people try to hide. Their beastial desires, their love for the splattered blood that their ancestors would gather to scream for in the collasiums. The light is nothing more than that which is approved of in the eyes of the world. It is the birth of life, the blooming of flowers, the creation, the order, the balancer between that which is monsterous and that which is wholesome. It is the natural affection mothers have for their young.

LOL Oddly enough I wrote a poem that same almost the same thing.

i think it is important that every one balance the dark and light aspects of there self to achive a better understandin of things .. for if you only concintrate on one then you have not experinced all that life has to offer

For me the Dark side is what most fear,misunderstand and find it as mysterious and hidden.

The light side is what appears in the surface of things.

I find none of the paths as good or evil.

Well lets see if dark and light are good and evil how come vampires arnt all concidered evil and yet they cannot show themselves in the light of day? i beleive that dark and light are different ways of describing evil or good i mean there is a thing called being too good wich can be considered really light or really good but then there can be also somone who just minds his own business but is still concidered good. i know this problably doesnt make any sence but i know what i mean.

ther is no difrenc in them. im saying this cause you cant live life without one of them ..... darkness can be for some people there home and the light is for others ther is no grey area..nobody lives ther life in the grey area...so there is no diffrence . saying there diffrent is like saying black people and white people are diffrent in fact we are all the same we just live our lives at a diffrent note

Light is determined by comparison to dark, and vice versa. Without one there is not the other. The light allows for Vision, the dark forces introspection. The light is the unfriendliness and stark world, the dark is the warm confinement of the womb.
Light and Dark has no connection with Good or Evil, which are terms that are relative. Light and Dark are words applied to constant extremes. The definition of Good and Evil vary from person to person. "Your heaven is my hell", say. But Light and Dark simply are.

a persons dark side is the side that lays in the shadows and they covet from others... its there secrets and true feelings on things ... its the side that influences most of there choices ... its the side you keep all yer hopes and dreams ... and the source of yer best ideas and insperation ...

but that is just my view....

Dark and light cannot be separated. They are two parts of one whole. And many times, both categories are simply grey. We live in a world of twilight.

I must say that you all have a very intresting take on the topic and I find myself contemplating all of them but lownignitus and LordVespertilio have seemed to take the words right from my heart and mind. Very well said.

Milambra evil and good have very little if not nothing to do with if a person is dark or light.

Evil or good is the intent a person has in their actions.

In a subject like this,it tends to be more opinionated. In terms of good and evil,people have several different outlooks on them. For example,one person can see killing as a means of good,while another person would see it as evil. It's all on how a person preceives it.

Who is to say what is evil or good? Your evil may be my good.

(This is a fact) Just because someone doesn't like something or is scared of it (like Wicca or Satanism) they call it evil.
And to them it is, (This is an opinion) but for everyone else to go off of their opinion without first exploring and investigating the so-called evil thing and getting their own understanding then forming their own opinion is obsurd and shows a lack of character in that person.

dark is a state of blank or cold and light is more pure and warmth.

This involves thiking for yourself, and perhaps being able to conceive the idea that some feel more confortable in the dark, and that light can be a challenging thing to be, rather than the ideas of good and evil.

Well the Dark Path is follow by many because it is the easiest one.
My opinion is that dark=evil.

dark = a deep thinking
light = hope

Darkness is what people cover themselves in when they feel the world has betrayed them so to them darkness = evil. And those who have light shed upon them believe that all is well in their lives so to them light = good.

darkness and light are both parts of differnt desires, light being feelings in some cases, darkness being power, both are desired and uncontroled, the real power is balance between the 2, carefully becoming light and bringing darkness to keep it in place

dark and light are both part of us, refusing tosee that is refusing to see the truth in us, but darkness makes me see so much deeper inside then light

To be in tune with both is quite healthy. But people reject the dark because it's pitch black. You could never see an enemy's eyes gleam in the dark or see the sneer they have. In the dark things can go on while you stand there dumbfounded. But with light you can observe everything. The details in the eyes down to the size and height of a person. You can tell what they think about you from the way they move about you. As for myself I perfer the dark and unknown for it allows me to explore myself and what I'm like, when the lights are out. If I'm cruel or malicious person and so forth.

Light doesn't always win. If it did there would be "Fluff Bunnies" everywhere. There would be no one left that was serious and deep thinking.

As I have said about myself. I do not think Dark is in anyway evil. But what I find very funny is that I am actually a very dark person that most people see as very light. When I was denying my dark side and shut it away I was very unhappy and even depressed. At that point is when I was most likely to do things with an evil intent. Once I opened up my dark side and made friends with it, I have been happier than I ever been before. I hope myself responsible for all of my actions good, bad or indifferent. The I was trying to only life on my light side I very much had a victim mentality, but not so with the balance of light and dark. I never have lived solely on my dark side so I don't know what I would be like then.

I am intrigued. I love the way you think. It is abnormal, which is good.

I enjoy reading all the viewpoints of light and dark.

This is my view:

Light: evil, a strain on my eyes, noisy, too much color, the time I want to sleep....

Dark: mysterious, romantic, the time of day I'm most active, peaceful, quiet.....

light has its own power jus like dark, its not all dark, all dark has its flaws, iggnorance, ego, etc. to be more than jus one thing and combine these forces would be greater

For me. There is no dark, and no light. There is only that which we cannot grasp. Darkness in itself is humanity, and the light is something we struggle to attain. Light is mere perfection. Nobody is perfect. The darkness is the brutality of being human, the faults and mistakes of who we are. "Light" is that which we wish we could be.

For example:

A girl who feels herself "ugly" would long to be beautiful. This is an example of "darkness" it is mere envy and jealousy.

A person who goes out and murders another. This is the flaw of humanity. It's brutal darkness, ugly savage nature. The motives behind killing are endless too.

I think you get my drift here.

Darkness is nothing but the humanity of people, and the light is the perfection they long for.

to me dark is the forbidden parts of life the things that you desire that society tells you are taboo and bad for you.

light is the things that society approves of things that we want to do that the world in general says are ok .

and y should society tell us what is good or taboo? individuality comes from deciding for yourself not going off of what society says or anyone for that matter

dark is sewen as evil because people associate it with monsters and bad things. they believe that things that can get them in the dark can't get them in light and they're dead wrong. dark is not evil in my mind. light isn't always good though. people can walk in light and not all of them are good. so i guess it's all in a human's mind whether it's good or not.

There's too many different types. All I know is one cannot survive without the other. They balance each other.

Light does not always win. It may force the darkness to retreat to quiet shadows, but everywhere there is light, there is darkness. And eventually, the sun will set and your fire will die, and the darkness shall return in full force.

It does seem that most people do associate good and evil with dark and light, but that isn't always the case.

What I was really asking is not about good or evil, but what each of you see as dark or light. If that includes good or evil so be it, and that is your personal view and there is never a wrong one.

But I have noticed that most people here don't seem to have the mainstream view of dark or light. I am glad to see that. LOL Means I am not so alone in being abnormal. ;)

The very nature of the question asks people to look deep within themselves and question their world, (whether they realise this is a different matter) as all truely great topics aim to do.

It would be sad to see this thread go because people can always eloborate and become more in-depth with their answers. Or change them completely as they grow and evolve.

That aside, it is quite irrelevent what Light and Dark truely are. They will always be opposing forces, working against one another for opposing ideals.

But their needs to be opposites. How can you have balance if there is no counterweight? Good and evil. Ying and Yang. Tom and Jerry. The secret to life is to attain perfection through a completely balanced existence.

Furthermore, Light and Dark will be forever changing, mutating to meet the demands you place on them. Altering themselves to fit your beliefs. They will be opposites, but they may be the same.

I'm rambling, but with direction. Do you see my point?

Light and Dark are simply what you make them. As every post here shows.

salemjones you are very right that people change over time. I used to have a very different view of Light and Dark. My current view of it actually came from discussions in a writing group I used to belong too. Any aspect of your life can affect how you see things. Realizing that I write from my dark side and that it makes what I write meaningful was very inlightening for me. It also made it much easier for me to accept those around me that have a very dark side too.

Life is definately more enjoyable and meaningful when looked at from both sides.

Usually light is associeted with good, heaven, God and so on...Dark is the opposite...but that doesn`t mean that all that is light is good for me or all that is dark is bad...Good and bad, light an dark, yin and yang...ideas, concepts, ways of expressing ourselfs in the society...

THe dark is unknowing and light is what you ecspect.people are afriad of what they do not know,and thuss this is bad,and knowing is good.

You can also say that light represents the easy way and dark the hard way; sometimes light is boredom when dark is mitery, thrill, excitement...

As for my own extention, I think that although both spectrums are not generally intermingled, they are not entirely perpendicular to eachother. Light has accumulated the stereotype to join good, as darkness has stereotyped to be evil. Of course, stereotypes are never that truthful. There are many dark dogooders, and light-bearing badmen,...

How do you tell who fits your sides status? It all comes down to discernment.

And it is extra hard explaining it to my mother who seemes to be stuck on the thought on the light = good and dark = evil. I belive that dark can be used to a good couse. Right?

Several have questioned if "Dark" can be used for "Good".

Have you ever used anger to spur you on to do something for the better of yourself or someone else?

Has someone you know and/or love died of long suffering illness and thier passing been a release for them?

Have you ever been so worried about something that you sat up most or all night thinking about it and eventually found a solution?

All of these and many others are examples of where "Dark" has been used for "Good".

Core, I learned the hard way that you can not denie part of yourself and even be happy. What you said is so very true.

Denying what you are and refusing to develop oneself can truly be considered "dark", dark meaning here "really bad"... The opposite will represent the true "light"! Embrace yourself and what you are!

Even in the brightest light a shadow, and in the darkest nights, there's always a light shining over at the Frankenstein place (sorry, couldn't resist. RHPS keeps slipping in). I don't think of dark as evil or good, and the same goes for light. The sun can nurture, the sun can burn; like most things in this world, light and dark and not absolutes, but are ambiguous.

hmm if one would categorise one self then I would say, that I am dark and a servent of light with a neutral mind.
that feels best to me, I love life regardless what it beholds.

dark vs. light..huh? well there is the simple way to think of it...it is dark outside or light outside lol...sorry but i dont really know there are so many ways that this can be taken that there is no one way to answer it

what I belive about the both sides is that they ar needed for 2 things,
the first is to maintain the balance in the world and second to keep life in motion.

Dark vs Light...darkness wins someday. When the sun burns out everything will be covered in darkness and everithing will die, if some new kind of technology wont be developed.

hmm actualy you never know who wins knowing that both sides are equaly strong,
but if dark would win then it would only rule for a moment until light comes back to even the balance ( and the same way around ).

darkness doesnt = evil like light doesnt = good ... they really have no connection to each other ... darkness is the balance to light as good is the balance to evil ... but that is about as far as the simalarties go.... a person can be dark and still good just as ppl can be light and be evil ... if you were to say good is light and dark is evil then these would make no sense cause how can a good person be evil at the same time or a evil person be good as well ...

its just a big contridiction to pair dark and light with good and evil ... if you really think about it .. and put yerself outside the box ... you will see the "light" ...lol... in this :D

Dark without light is incomplete, they are link one to another no matter what one wants or desire it is like that.Both are one in a way and two, I know it sound weird but its like that an undestructable link exist between the two of them, otherwise the balance of things could not exist and the laws of physics and nature would be sensless.

In the anallogy of the sun burning out would cause all life to end, that is not exactly how it would happen. Before the sun burned out it would actaully expand. From what has been learned from watching other stars do this it is believed that it would actually expand to a point out past earth, meaning that all life would end but it would be "Light" that ends it by burning up the earth, rather than "Dark" by causing it to starve. A really good example of "Light" being "Evil". ;-)

i strongly beleive that there isnt exactly a dark and a light, esp in magicks. i think it depends on the person and their will on how to use it

randomkinkyness2007 that is true....exactly wat i think. It isnt the magic you use but the person you are. I myself think htat I would be more to the dark side if I had to chose bu thten again still be in the light. I really dunno, I would be in between.

I was introduced to "Dark and Light" often as a little kid as "Bad and Good" but given more thought about it when I'm older...

Unusually, I find Light and Dark to be equal.. Both evil in their own ways, and both good in others.

For example, Light.. it's good, right? You can see things with it! But without dark.... There would be too much light.. It would be to bright.. It would blind you.... Sting your eyes.. no, burn'm... It's like, looking up at the sun at noon, and never looking away.

In the same way, that's what dark is. With dark, the light isnt too bright, and you wont go blind from the light... but with no light, you'll also go blind... stuck in the darkness, swimming, and lost..

To come to a conclusion-- I guess you could say it's Yin Yang... Not that EVERYTHING IS BALLANCED, but that they need one another, or eather way the world is corrupted.... I'd hate to be in a perfect world with no problems and everybody smiling twenty four fricken hours of a seven day week... (light) nor would I want a world where everybody depsises everybody else, and not one person has a happy relationship with another, not one person has a friend, and the only there there is is suiside, pee on the floors in a cage, and torture (dark I guess)...

Dark is light bound in a defferent point of view. Darkness is my light. There is no meaning besides what you think. One attatches a sterotype to everything. I do good... but long for the dark. This doesn't mean i'm bad. I have morals and such, i just prefer the dark. So simple.

Light is what we can see. We know it contains. Darkness is what we can not see. It holds mystery. Both can draw you to them. Both can trap you. Both can set you free. It's what your mind sees and wants that will decide.

light is the construct of all the colours of the spectrum intertwined to create something thats bears symbolism to the colour white, tho valued throughout history as a colour of purity it is in fact a perfect contradiction as white light needs all of the light spectrum to create it therfore it is the most impure thing imaginable,......brings a good standing against the bloody christian church and their fuckin white robes lol
whilst black is considered a non colour or that of a single pigment ...........true purity
it is no doubt why many of us see,feel and speculate far better with a deeper insight from this side of the spectrum

I personally do not believe in good or bad light or dark..... Everything is based on the own beings thinking and beliefs.... To what one may think good anouther may think bad...... Light and dark to me is only if a room is light or dark it doesn't have any meaning to me what so ever to a person's actions or soul.....

Dark and Light are definately in the eyes of the beholder. As are good and evil.

I did not intend this to be about morals so i will refrain from discussing good and evil.

I will say though that there are some lines that are gray and other that are more black and white.

Dark is what people are afraid of because people are afraid of what they cannot see and in the light you can see everything nothing can sneak up on you

These are necessary opposites. Yang and Yin. Light and Dark. Water and Fire, Earth and Sky. One can never truly exist without the other. One can never know happiness without despair and sorrow. Nor can one expierence Love without loneliness. It is quite simple. While some deem something to be evil others would say how would you know what evil is without knowing good. It is eternal and balanced.

I think that there hsould be a balance of both dark and light.
