I have been reading a lot about Vampires and werewolves...But which creature came first...the vampires or the werewolves??
Deity Edit:
If you respond to this thread, I suggest you give a somewhat educated response. No more nonsense.
I think they both came around the same time.... Good question though.
Honestly don't know... I would guess that maybe came at the same time only for the fact that there must of been some form of them since the beginning of time.
they exist..does it matter ?..Because they are different species, perhaps they came about the same time.
Honestly... I think the werewolves. More animalistic in nature. I feel vampirism stemmed moreso afterwards, perhaps with the want to kill over the need to eat.
i dont know, but that comment about werewolves, for fact that they were animalistic and needed to eat vs. the want to kill.. kinda makes lots of sence.
Honestly, I think they're just mutations that occurred somewhere down the line. As to which one happened first, I honestly don't have a clue.
Perhaps stories of werewolves evolved from old memories of Neanderthals. They were rather hairy and did eat raw meat, as well as other stuff.
Werewolfs have existed aslong as the moon has been around.
Vampires have existed aslong as blood was present.
Take that ^_^
I myself don't know the answer to that question. But that is like asking which came first the chicken or the egg. No one really knows.
Ok my post has a two part answer first part...
Fiction point of view I believe wolves came first. Then vampires probally with the birth of vlad dracula..
From a real point of view I have to say wolves did. Or atleast acounts and studies record them first. With native american like tribes calling upon spirits and becoming like that animal in traits and likeness. They date back all the way to the nomad times. Vampires have so many myths or what you would call modern ones. You have acounts leading back to bibical times and even egyptian time period. Its really hard to answer such a question with alot beign based on myths or lost information. Guess in a nutshell I will have to say wolves...
acid that makes a lot of cense and i do think you have hit the nail on the head
so i will go with you
if man evolved from primate as the darwin theory explains could werewolves been an aboration of the same thing? man evolving from wolves since early time? And as far as vampires it seems as tho vampires would have had to come later on once man had fully evolved.
Food for thought:
to add to my last comment would it be possible that vampires evolved from some form of werewolf as they both have the desire to feed a sort of primal instinct Vampires just evolved beyond the instincts of animal to feast on flesh.
Traditionally the belief in lycanthropy was first mentioned by Plato. In his "Natural History" c. 427–c.347 BC
The bloodsucking Akhkharu in the Sumerian mythology. 3500-2334 BCE
I am gonna say werewolves first and then vampires but he without real evidence we are all taking guesses here.
In a more legend aspect, not sure. There are strange legends regarding beast like mean going far back in history, exact time thought I don't have on me at the moment and don't have the time to research for. As for Vampires, they are the same going.
As for the Real stuff, The Aspect of Vampyrism has been around, accourding to some, since the dawn of man. Yet, every person will give you a different story. As for Otherkin, which are the ones mistake for "Werewolves" or the like, I know very little about them. So I can't really give info on them.
Yet what I can say, Otherkin and Vampyres are not a war with each other. As some people like to believe in the mystical aspect of vampirism, and wish to loose themselves in the fantasy world of Underworld, I would like to establish this.
Real Vampyrism: Living people with a sever energy problem. Because of this we feed off other living energy of other people. We live normal lives and do normal, well for the most part, normal things.

i really dont know,
i just tried doing research on it but theres nothing,
if you ask me though i would say the werewolf came first.
The Book Of Nod
read it, in that book, the first blooddrinker was born of curse and no mention of a wolf like creature exsisted. Take it for what you will.
just adding to MARIUS and the curse shall nort be broken till forgiveness be shone.
and those of the seven shall never beg forgiveness a torment impossed apon themselfs as punishment of thier crime.
I'm going to have to go with AcidRonin on this one. Heh ^^ Nice thread, and good question.
Well historically don't the vampires legends go back the furthest?
**"The Russians, Morlacchians, inhabitants of Montenegro, Bohemians, Servians, Arnauts, both of Hydra and Albania, know the vampire under the name of wukodalak, vurkulaka, or vrykolaka, a word which mean "wolf-fairy", and is thought by some to be derived from the Greek."
Wolf fairy! Did the werewolves come first and vampires were there named after? Because of some similarities??
Wolves have always been assocaited with vampire, vampires being their master.
Its a really good question and can do with some research being taken into got me really intrigued!
**Taken from Dudley Wrights "The book of Vampires aka Vampires and Vampirism)"
You can read more exerpts from it on my Journal if anyone is interested.
Sorry just had a thought, What if werewolves came from Wolves drinking their masters blood????
The Werewolf legend originated from countryside around the German towns Colongne and Bedburg in 1591. At that time, Europe was under the dark shadow of ignorance and superstition. Towns were undeveloped and people lived near the woods. The fear of wolves was as terrifying as nightmares. Their attacks were so frequent that people even feared to travel from one place to another. Every morning, the countryside people would find half-eaten human limbs on their fields. They tried their best to kill those bloodthirsty creatures. But one day the inhabitants of the German towns Colongne and Bedburg made a horrible discovery that altered the history of mankind.
An age-old pamphlet describes those shivering moments vividly. A few people cornered a wolf and set their dogs upon it. They attacked it with sharp sticks and spears. Surprisingly the ferocious wolf did not run away; it stood up and turned into a middle-aged man. They could recognize the wolf-shaped man. He was Peter Stubbe of the same village. This Peter Stubbe was the first werewolf mankind had faced.
Stubbe was put on the torture wheel where he confessed 16 murders, including those of two pregnant women and thirteen children. The history behind his downfall was rather strange. He started to practice sorcery when he was only 12 and was so obsessed with it that he even tried to make a pact with the Devil. Wearing a magic girdle he started attacking his enemies, real or imaginary, for revenge. After several months, he took the guise of a wolf and continued his evil activities with more brutality. In the wolf form he tore up the victims' throats and sucked their blood. Gradually his thirst for blood grew and he roamed around the fields in search of prey.
The savagery of his crimes was beyond imagination. Once two men and a woman were walking along a road that went through the forest he used to hide in. He called one of them. The man did not return for a long time and the second one followed his trail. He also disappeared into the forest. The woman fled from the area. Later, two mangled corpses were recovered from the forest, but the woman's body never reappeared. It was believed that Stubbe had devoured it all. Young girls who played together or milked the cows in the fields were his frequent victims. He used to chase them like a hound, catch the slowest one, rape and kill her. Then he drank warm blood and ate tender flesh from her body. Stubbe committed the most gruesome crime upon his own son. He took his son to a nearby forest, cracked the poor child's skull and ate his brain.
No punishment could match the magnitude of Stubbe's crimes. He was put on the torture wheel and his flesh was pulled off with a red-hot pincer. His arms and legs were broken, and finally he was decapitated. His carcass was burned to ashes. As accessories to his misdeeds, his daughter and mistress were also burnt alive.
The Magistrate of the town Bedburg built a grim monument in memory of the ghastly incident. Workmen put the torture wheel atop a tall pole with Stubbe's head above it. His head was structured with the likeliness of a wolf. Sixteen pieces of yard long wood pieces were hung from the rim of the wheel to commemorate the poor souls of his victims.
The words of Stubbe's trial and execution spread across the lands. His brutality, their ways and atrocity were beyond human experience. His ferocity was readily related with that of a wolf. People started to believe that such creatures with the shadow of wolves were living among them. They named them 'Werewolves'.
As popularly known, a werewolf is a person who is transformed, voluntarily or involuntarily, into a wolf under the influence of full moon. The word werewolf is a contraction of the old-Saxon word wer (which means "man") and wolf--werwolf, manwolf. Another term lycanthrope, often used to describe werewolves, however, refers to someone who suffers from a mental disease of fantasizing being a wolf. This particular mental disorder is termed lycanthropy.
Maybe werewolves come first cause they are a little more primitive than vamps....dosent really matter...
It is a tad bit foggy, who came first, well unless we're absolute scholars and go rooting into a very long past I'm not sure we may ever know. Interesting question all the same
The vampires came into play in biblical times in first woman to walk in eden which was not Eve but Lilith who fell in love with Caine. Vald Dracul was not a true vampire but a cruel dictaor that drank the blood after hanging his victims on wood spikes after his armies defeated them in great wars. Wolves obviously came into play a bit after or about the same time as the garden of eden. I shall let you make the call.
I would say that the vampire came before the lycans did. But Possibly only a few years before. Or maybe they cam around at the same time. I'm guessing it's one of those two.
vampires came first, then wolf's cuz of beings that can change there shape...
I am not to sure on this either but I am enjoying learning from everyones posts. I know that if I had to make a guess I would think the wearwolfs came first but as I said.. I honestly dont know and this would just be my opinion, one which is not supported by anything.
My uneducated guess would be Werewolves because of their primal nature.
Werewolves are an offshoot of uman existence, but "evidence" suggests that vampires were in ancient cultures that pre-date Cro-Magon man...
So I say Vampires.
Thats like the question "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" I don't think anyone knows that answer...
im probly guessing werewolves... just random, i have no proof or no reason thats just my guess
I would have to say the vampire although obviously no one really knows.
This is like the ultimate question. But as I read through all the posts.. I too am starting to beleive that the werewolf have been around for a bit longer than vampires. I like the 'need to eat VS. want to kill' theory. It makes a good point. But as for being sure, I have no idea.
I can never truly trust any 'historical' account about when something occured - how can we?
The fact that we still have accounts of various 'historical' events does not by default make it all chronologically accurate.
However I did like the point someone made earlier regarding the urge to kill versus the urge to eat.
One who exists must eat, to eat they must kill first.
So the killer came first, not the hungry one.
Wait, no because you would have to be hungry first to even want to kill to get nourishment.
Okay that's clear now; the hungry came first.
*cough*
thought it was vampire and werewolf, not hunger and kill.
History can usually be trusted when we use science in conjunction. But yeah, I can't trust history. Damn, I don't even know if George Washington was the first president. Seriously, did we gain independance from Great Britian? Maybe they just forgot about us.
all my silliness aside...
what evidence are you referring to Minamurray?
as to evidence of a humanoid predating cro magnon...there is little more than a few odd bone fragments as far as I have ever heard of....but having an interest in archeaeology I would be interested in reading about such
but the question also stands as to what variant of vampire in lore are you referring to in this which came first....
as far as I have seen the earlier stories of vampires have them drinking blood only as sustenance...their power was moon granted...as is their nightly ressurection from the deathlike state
but this is gathered from scattered bits of old stories...
i guess i have to re-write my post, since nobody understood it.
Traditionally the belief in lycanthropy was first mentioned by Plato. In his "Natural History" c. 427–c.347 BC
The bloodsucking Akhkharu in the Sumerian mythology. 3500-2334 BCE
lycnthropy=werewolfness first mentioned somewhen between 427-c.347 BC, cause thats when Plato lived
akhkharu=bloodsucker=vampire from the Sumerian mythology and the sumerians lived between 3500-2334 BCE
ergo, that would mean the vampire came pretty much before the werewolf.
but thats just when they got first mentioned in written form.
Deity wanted no nonsens, there you go.
Holy Christ people, the Book of NOD is a Role Playing Game Supplement from White Wolf Game Studios. If you people believe in that crap then hell I have the who lore of the "Kindred" at my Home in Okinawa right now.
Actual truth on the living and Real conditions of Vampyrism has been shadowed over and forgotten in time, the only thing that remains are legends of those who were afraid of things they could not understand.
One of which is the fact there is a gene out there that causes uncontrollable body hair growth ALL OVER the body. Which then makes the person look much like a "Wolf Man," which is probably where the whole "Werewolf" thing came from. Yet, this is all my own speculations and knowledge.
So if people have some REAL information not in regards to "Cain" or the damn "Book of Nod" please, I would like to see it.

Thank you btw Kat for the intelligent distrabution of information. Its good to see some none BS stuff placed upon this thread.

...I think both came around at the same time... but who really knows??
It was the Vampire who came first, they are one of the oldest creature's around...then came the werewolves...!! (but they weren't long after the vampire tho)
I think the Vampire came 1st considering the 1st vampire cam about the same time as crist.
I believe the egg came first. All things are formed from eggs.
i have to agree with acid .. there are numerous accations of native americans telling storys of them way befor the vlad thing ever happened...
I not quite sure, i think they came at about the same time....
Ive heard a rumor that vampires evolved from wolves thats why they have strong ties with them... so probably the werewolf came first
after looking over many posts im thinking that the vampire was first mentioned, but physically the vampire came after the werewolf
but until someone builds a time machine to take us back a few thousand years we will never know, now will we?
It depends on which one was being selfish at the time....lol
Who knows, i suppose the werewolf as the wolf has been around longer than the human.
i bealive the vampire came first soley because the are the creatures of night and the night came before the day
Personally, I think this has gone on quite enough.
'Chicken or egg', I vote scrambled.
