What really makes a vampire a vampire?

All humans except people who do not eat meat eat blood, all humans bite others, there are many people who prefer night over day, we are all mortal although some people think they are immortal... so what really makes a vampire a vampire? There are so many animals(like humans) in the world who have vampric traits does this make everyone a vampire? Discuss.

the traits you mention are not mutually exclusive, or non concentric subsets. Predominance of one variety of satisfaction of exposition of traits lends character to that vampire. There are even different endless varieties of feeding, just as no human face is like another, or anotomy of an individual, I say there are no two vampires the same.

Living at nght I would say would be the key to accessing the other traits. They all follow after the nocturnal habitual insomniatic pattern persists.

now is there a deffinate discription of what a vampire is ...cause there are 2 diffrent kinds you have the ones who drink blood and the ones who qare psyc...so would there be a big diffrence in the traits cause of those facts...id like to know that...

well the most general description i can think of that makes a vampire is the hunger for a form of life force whether its in a blood form , sexual form or in an energy form the hunger for that one thing is what i think makes you a vampire

I think Psi vamps are the most obvious to detect, that person that just flat out makes everyone around them feel generally shitty. The problem is I don't think all Psi Vamps even know what they are.

i think that most ppl could be vamps but just don't know it. you don't nessisarily have to be immortal or undead to be a vamp

well some psi vamps are unaware of their abilities so they drain others unintentialy, but the ones that have learned to control their feeding habits usualy feed off of a donor or partner and they see it as unethical to feed off of others unintentialy. most vampires live by the black veil if you dont know what that is feel free to google it, it is baisicly a code of ethics for vampires. in the book psychic vampire codex they have the black veil in it and it is a verry good read.

HUNGER might be right. But recognize as vamps, do not take from the hunger, take from the fatted calf, and feed Robin's hood, with what ever you drain. Fattening the starved for attention brings them to life. I was quite dead. Giving all I have learned to someone has enlivened me, I did not know giving would fill me but it has.

I think...for most it has to do with the state of mind, belief, and a little bit of that parasitic ideal of living off another in order to attain life or a better way of life for yourself.

Anyone can drink blood and call themselves a Vampyre...doesn't make it true. But its the need and the hunger for blood and all it contains is what makes the difference.

To me, it is a way of life as well as a mindset..as with most things you have to immerse yourself within the life and learn it from the inside out before you can truly call yourself a vampire.

im not sure, its just everything has a hunger for something and saying that its a vampires hunger that distinguishes a vampire from everything else just dosent seem like the corrent answer in my view, maby im just thinking to much anyway ill look iton it a bit more and see what i can come up with, thanks for your replies

As so elequently stated in the prior post is that physical attributes cannot be the determining factor to decide if we are a vampire. It is within our souls that determine who we are. The need to feed is within all of us but is it a primal need do we hunt like a wild animal or are we more civilized about it. Do we look for prey in lower species and drain them of their life or even energy? Or do we go about our lives not knowing that there is such a need? Those who are vampires be it psychic or otherwise know who they are as that primal need to feed is what drives their every day lives.

What makes one a Vampire is the need for the energy, blood, life force, and such. Yes many people like blood and bitting as a fetish, but those who are vampires crave it, need it, long for it. Its is more than just a fantasy or a want it is a desire that must be met.

Hmm , I vampire is made by his caracter , as it was already told by his damnation. You dont need to drink blood to be one , nor do you burn in sun or posess imortality. It's beyond all this. Although the eternity is a curse for some , and they try and some succed to become mortals again , this is what makes them so atractive and .. well seductive. I"m assuming, that if you hunger a source of energy from another being and actually feed your need you are a vamp...I don't really know though..I will def. look into it now that I'm interested.

Its a state of mind a way of thinking. Its a way of living, its part of a person, who we are and what we are, inside and deeply in. no matter what other think, we have to feel it within our bones our fibers of our body, everywhere. Inside and out it has to be there and our mind has to beleive it so profondly that our skin hurts when the sun touches it (which it does to me) and our eyes don't like it (mine don't) and the darkness not toal pitch black, but only darkness and shadows makes us feel better and sure. At least thats what I think, on top there is the need for blood...I do need blood for real, its cause I have anemia so I do need it since my blood is pour. So I have to eat food with high rion or blood in it like raw meat (yes I do eat it if in need not often but it happens) I must rest often since I tend to get tired easy when I let out an extrem amount of adrenaline out of my system. Hope this will shade some light.

i see these threads often about why we call ourselves vampires.it shouldn't be so confusing.what causes such confusion is the way people keep comparing vamps in our world to the vamps in hollywood.they are for entertainment.some vamps here do this for entertainment but other live this shit foreal.bats,wolves and all that shit entertains us and people take it to the head like oh well it happened in the movie so it has to happen foreal to be real.for some,for me thats not good enough.

I feel what makes me a vampire might differ from another person's opinion. For me being a vampire not only means having the physical need/lust for blood or a preferance for the night, but because I feel like my soul has lived through countless ages; i feel immortal and never-ending, but also tattered and withered because I've seen the horrors and fatal flaws of the human race. But, in the end, that is only my opinion.

slitxxwrists...i dont mean too much offense...but, vampyres (not vampires in movies, but the ones that actualy walk the earth!) vampyres dont HAVE to function at night, we dont burn in sunlight...unless you have pail skin and you need like 100spf sunblock...but we DO NOT burst into flames...

and, we may not be able to controll our bloodlust, but we can deffinately defeat it when it comes about...its a mind over matter thing. or you can drink loads and loads of milk or eat acidic fruits...

but, my main point to you, is that REAL vampyres dont have to stay indoors at day and they cant only go out at night.

in fact, i prefer day over night anyways, unless the sun is setting or rising, that is when it is really bright.

Since all people require energy through feeding whether by blood, psi, sex or food it is required for life. The ability to recgonize that you feed of of other than food is what would make a vampire, in my opinion. As far as perfering the night, most members of my family perfer it as do I. We are more awake, alive and mentally aware at night than day, many of us chose jobs that allowed evening or night work. While we do not consider ourselves vampires and can go out in the day we function better at night and so have tuned our lives that way. I suspect others have done this over the years and this may have led to the Daylight myth, as others are not as accepting of a resonable explaination as wanting things to be scary and mysterious.

I am stuck on the fence with this one, I am of both sides. I do at times have the thirst, though normally it is when my body is to the point of to sick to maintain its immune system.... I am allergic to the sun, if I stay out in it I tend to blister, but I'm also very pale and light sensitive...
yet that is a medical condition not something strickly placed to being vampyric...
I am also an energy taker... though i do not tend to leave those around me feeling shitty..

and there is no hatred for human kind in this mind... just the stupidity of what we do to ourselves at times...

In my opinion, what makes a vampire, a vampire - is the need to feed off of others. Be it energy or blood.

Both are documented/reserached as having existed throughout time. Not all were restricted to living only at a night.

I believe it is a hunger or desire for whatever you want in life. It is a taste of something wonderful whatever it might be. It is a feeling that drives you along when there isnt anything left for you to feed on. Its a deisre to travel where others havent been no matter how hard or long the trip takes.

we arent alergic to sunlight, we have souls, and our blood is heated by our body, we are not cold blooded...
we do not kill or have "prey"...we have these wonderful people called donors, and they let us feed from them. and not by biting either.

Yes I agree. But there are too many different things that lend a hand in what makes a vampire a vampire. Seeing as all vampires are different beings not exactly one in the same.

I don't pretend to know the definition... on a mutual friend's recommendation an author contacted me wanting to interview a vampire. Not sure if I qualified for her purposes the question came down to drinking blood. Yes, I like to drink blood, but does that alone make me a vampire? I like eating carrots, does that make me a rabbit?

For her purposes I was very much a vamprire. By some of the definitions here(but not others...) clearly so (or not)

I like blood, and have been fascinated with vampirism as long as I can remember. I am in some regards very predatory, but also highly empathic. Also sensitive to sunlight, but that's standard for folks with my pigmentation (or lack of it.)

It seems clear we won't settle on a solid definition of the term here, but it is interesting to see people's experience and perspective.

No one else can really define it for you. After all, no one has the right to tell anyone else "Hey, you're not a vampire, because you don't conform to my arbitrary standards of what a vampire is." I could tell you that a vampire has to be pale, creepy, wear black clothes, have pointy teeth and drink blood, but that would just be my opinion. I can't force my arbitrary standards on you any more than I can force some code of ethics that you may not believe in.

i agree with mainly others here. that it is not the urge or the will to feed (engery or blood) but the need to, the overpowering domanting feeling of need to, to survie.

Because of recent adoptions of the word, the answer to your question is now a matter of belief like a religion rather than the simple definition of fact or history. What you believe a vampire is, can be your own belief and you can place yourself within that definition or outside it depending upon how close you intend to keep in to the folklore and legend of history.

However, I would say that trying to scientifically tie humans to vampires would have little to do with whether or not humans through meat eating are practicing the same characteristics as vampires in myth. A meat eater is digesting the protein and tissue more than the blood of a meal...muscle, fat, gristle...which is particularly different from simply ingesting quarts of blood and somehow digesting it instead of vomiting it back up.

To me, based on what I feel and think and from readings and experiences, being a vampire is both a state of mind and a physical being.
Vampires feel the urge deep within them to feed, whether on blood, emotions, or other things. Vampires have special abilities such as enhanced intuition and emotion. They are a higher being in that they are more open to knowledge and physical sensations.

I am not sure what makes a vampire, but I don`t think the need for energy in exclusive to vamps. I am wiccan and have been able to absorb and use the energy around me in my craft, and spellwork. I think there is a lot more to what a vamp really is.

Feeding off the energy's of others makes us vampires....there are many different kinds....if you feed on energy's that o not belong to you, technically you may be a vampire...

MstJuan, you have a good point but trying to read that hurt my head. I don't know that vampires are actually a higher being, but it's possible.
Personally, I believe that the vampires of myth no longer exist. If they do, I don't think I'll find them here. But the vampires of today seem to be whoever thinks they are a vampire. The definition is fluid. Even the need to feed means nothing. After all, I need to feed. Burgers and fries will do fine for me. Even psyvamps and blood drinkers need to eat normal food to live. All you really need is absolute belief. Only that can unlock the powers within anyone, vampire, witch, or otherwise.

Personally I like to think that it all falls to the survival subject. If certain traits that are considered vampish are needed to survive then I would say that makes a good candidate for a vampire.

Vashti really brought it down to it's most basic answer in the current light of modern vamps. "It is what you believe it is."

having read everyones comments,i add my own,most it seems have hit upon a common thread,it's the need to feed on energies,wheither they come from emotions,(psi)blood(sanguine)sex(pranic)or elemental(fire,lightning,etc.)we feed because we lack to keep the ability to store these in our own bodies naturally,so therefore we hunt,shopping malls,donors,lovers,and really good storms.

There are many forms of vampires. Thers not just two or three. Theres plenty. And from what my knowledge is you really can't say what makes a vampire a true vampire because there are all sorts of way to describe them and most humans would sound like vampires I would think that there would probably be a specific trait. One I'm not entirely sure of to be honest.

vampire,a persona wich incorporates all traits wich we hold for our representation of an vampire.if the legends are true than we have already a solution...and then again our perspective on what vampire really is or should be may be intotal wrong....there is so many minds, so many perspectives on what should a real vampire be.pointless to discuss further.solution:find one and determine what it really is,what ever it might be,maybe nothing of already belived,but sommething totaly different....

or create one, and set new standards of what should make one....
