I think that shapeshifters exist. Maybe not in the were- forms of legend but things that were offspring of humans and promethean entities from the dawn of creation. Who can say really? I think that in the bible, old testament probably, it mentions beasts who walk as men. Maybe this was an allusion to shifters or Fae changelings. I've been wanting to research old legends and compare accounts and stories. But I haven't had the time to do so. I hope maybe some others can shed some light on the subject. I would really like to use a group mind to learn more.

Well with some of those they were demigods or demons that dealt in deception. Having an illusory form isn't the same as a shifter IMO. And the Native American shapeshifter legends were purported shamanic rituals and powers to commune with nature and tap into the pulse of the primal. There is a book I own called Encyclopedia of the Undead that has a section on shifters, but its mostly were- legends and japanese demon stories. its a great read and well put together. I'll give it a look-see after I've had some sleep and put a synopsis of a few legends for discussion.

Shapeshifters exist. Even in the Native American cultures there are legends about them known as Skinwalkers. I suggest going to the library to learn more.

Shapeshifters, Lycanthropes, thierens....They all exist in one form or another.

Now You can hold a debate about where somthing exist time and time agian. And question the logic of it all, but then at the same time do we not all debate over Vampires at the same time?

If one can occupy time and space in this plane of existence, then why should it be so hard for the other to not?
Conside this as a balence.
With out one, the other could not be. However this is my theory.

besides living with one kinda helps.

Okay so what is the point of the topic? It is pretty vague and broad.

There is no direction to the thread. Can you please narrow your dicussion down to something that can be discussed.

If the subject isn't narrowed down soon, I am going to close it.

They exist. i once met a man who had seen one. a young man he was in the room with turned into a tiger, and threw him across the room like he was a rag doll. when he changed back, the young man remembered nothing of what happened, or knew why he was growling at a terrified man in the corner. the fear on his face is like nothing i'd ever seen on a human being before - i believe he was genuin.

i think shapeshifting definitely exists. i think most often people can travel as other creatures in spirit (sort of like astral projection). i don't know if you can physically turn into something else, but i'm willing to accept the possibility.

I believe shapeshifting exists but on different levels and for different purposes.

If people, and it doesn't matter race or heritage, can shapeshift, I don't think they are all going to be: "Ohh look I can change into tiger or a wolf!" ::poof:: and are going to be running around in their "animal" form in a city or a village.

I believe most would keep it to themselves unless they trust someone. The ancients might have shapeshifted to hunt or to protect themselves to scare off their enemies or simply to be one with Mother Earth.

Now with cities and politics and lack of faith, people have either lost connection with nature and their faith or just don't believe in it. Sometimes both.

I also believe shapeshifting can be physical, mental, and/or both.

Physical shifting is obvious but mental shifting is different more of a reverting back to the primal instincts within one's mind still physically being human but the mind and emotions becoming more honest and "fun loving" so to speak. Where as with human mentality, humans naturally try to decieve and hurt while animals think of living and purity. We don't see animals trying to murder others of their species because of money, fraud, insurance or because "he/she cheated"

These are just a few of my thoughts and I just wanted to share. This has been one of the very few forums that actually seemed worth posting in. ::smiles::

Why take the wasted time and effort to physically manfiest shape, when one can simply alter their current state of being. Think of it as mental adaption and obscurity.

I believe i have know someone who was a shapeshifter but didnt fully know it. He would really change physically when angered. he wouldnt turn into a wolf but he had a lot of canine characterists about him. when angered he would grow an inch or so taller his nails would grow quite quickly for the next couple days and his eyes would change color

My family talks a lot about my great great great great great grand father. He was a blackfoot medicine man and the chief. They say he would revert to a wolf form for hunting. Just family stories though. But I have seen others in my family do weird stuff. When angered and become very very agressive and edgey around the full moon.

Okay I'll ask a question and get the ball rolling...

From reading the posts above a majority believe there are things such as shapeshifters.

Do they physically shift into different shapes? Or do they trick your mind into believing that they have shifted form and you see what they want you to see?

Kind of like a visual hallucination.

I have been in the presence of many who have claimed to be "Shapeshifters." Not once have I seen them shift their shape, whether on comand or on their own. Oh, I have heard a lot of excuses why they were not able to do it, but that can get old, fast.

Skin color change=tanning

This is what I mean by excuses. They make note of things that can be a significant change in anyone on this planet. I am a skeptic, and until I see it, I would have to say it is false in my realm of thinking.

well I'm not a shifter nor do I claim to be but with training and practice I believe you can change your shape in your dreams and even in astral travel

however people can change physically maybe not int he form of a wolf or bear but anger and rage can make you stronger, quicker, more durable, and just scary

shapeshifting can also be misunderstood by naive people at one time thje wolf in europe was so ferocious people believed it had human intelligence and of course all of these animals were one of the dominant hunters or most feared animals in their territory

also you have sasquatch and drugs that cause you to hallucinate too, one plant used in ritauals to shift into a wolf was nightshade which when taken in small doses can cause hallucinations

but honestly do shifters physically exist, depends what you mean and if you talk to someone who believes in them

Building on what Nightfang says, I don't think the word shapeshifter should be used. They are "Mindshifters" and nothing more. I would not go as far to say that it is a MPD, but it is something of this nature. Something controlled or uncontrolled, that brings about a definanty switch in personality, voice, and actions.

I don't think general shapeshifting is possible like going from bird, to wolf, to dolphin, and stuff like that.

However to person to person might be possible for a shapeshifter.

Speaking from the Native American side, There is many stories of shapeshifters in Oneida tales, especially ones dealing with specific figures. But it doesn't involve a person transforming, it involves the animal taking a human shape. Most times these animals are decievers and cause harm, other times they just cause mischief(sp) I.E. Coyote for Southwestern Tribes and the Fox for woodland.
Its beleived that because us as a people became "enlightened" or "modern" by white standerds we've forgotten how to speak the language of the animals and thus they no longer trust us. Excluding domesticated animals.

but I will say this as a disclaimer: I just because I have not seen it I will not say that it doesn't exist.

Personally, I don't believe a person can actually shape shift into another form phsyically, I believe more in people who change form psychically, more theianthropy (forgive the spelling) some one who changes form in their mind, rather than their skin. But thats just my personal view.... don't want to start aguments or anything :)

Though the topic started off rather vague, it was very interesting reading all the responses.

I personally believe that it is possible. I definitely know a few people who seem to have a lot of animal-like characteristics. I'm not sure to what degree I believe in the actual idea of physical shapeshifting. I would like to believe that such things are possible on the scale that some people are talking, but it's also hard to truly believe in beyond a shadow of a doubt for me without having encountered any such events/people.

Everything in folk lore does/has existed at some point in time. As for shape shifting i have never done it however i have projected myself into another being. Using druidic techniques of astral travel and lore taken from Indian practices i was able to visualise and communicate, cruedly, with my familiar/spirit guide and enter its manifestation. I usually call on two eagles, one being myself and the other as my guide which allows my traveling to occur over much greater distances than i had been able to before.

the ability to shift into another entity/shape is deffinately viable. Though i feel that in this plane of existance it would prove difficult as creatures in this plane are alot more substantial and harder to mould, though i will not say impossible. Like playdough and steel, one is easilly manipulated the other is much harder though it can be done with the right technique. It is much easier, once learnt to change your appearance through manipulation of energies than to change the more solid imprint visible in this plane. Though deffinately a curious feild to look at, perhaps i have found my next road to follow.

Okay so people think it is a mind manifestation. Okay so let's touch on this for a second.

People say that they can 'shape shift' and gain either the strength, eyesight, etc when the time that they need it to happen.

The same thing happens in occurrences when a grandmother picked a car off a young child because they could have died.
She gains strength by her psyche and fear. Not knowing where the strength came from after the 'flight or fight' mind set was gone.

Couldn't this be close to the same thing. A person embeds it into their mind that when a situation happens and the 'fight or flight' mind sets in, the person's psyche will then form the traits they have locked in their sub-conscience mind. Therefore, letting them to believe that they are some sort of 'physical' shape shifter?

hmm...interesting. Though this would not explain the actual shape shift, it deffinately gives rise to the ability of it... as an inate natural entity/ability that exists inside the person? perhaps.

I explained the closest thing i have come to shape changing, and as a general thought do not consider projection to be a shift of form, rather a visualisation on a seperate plane.

This "fight or flight" that you speak of does allow some extraordinary feats though may take us into a completely different discussion to do with kinetics, and thats not what we are here for atm.

I do quite whole heartedly beleive that shape shifting exists, and would love to meet a shifter to experience it first hand.

I know I'm going to get flack for this, but I do believe it is possible for shape shifters to exist. There are too many cultures that have stories of them. Also, isn't it possible for entities to shape shift in order to mislead? I don't mean god-like spirits, but more disturbing instances.

My personal view is that shapehifting could very well be possible. If anyone has watched Blade Trinity... Dracula is a perfect example. He is able to shift to take on the appearances of others... and why the hell not... that sort of transformation would likely be an evolution of a Chameleon's colour changing...

Actually taking the form of animals... Taking the form of other mammilian creatures I think to be very possible... we all stem from the base creature right... so we all have a common shared trait... And if anyone human or otherwise denies our common animal traits I would tell them to spend a week in the wilds and see just how 'human' they are when their forced to survive.

Shapeshifting into mist I see as highly unlikely... mist is an element and is a non-living 'thing' hence in order to do this surely the creature would also need to be non-living

I have seen both humans and other beings shift. Nope I don't take drugs, I wasn't drunk, and I am certified sane lol. The most interesting one was a 5 foot tall being who turned into a squirel. If 2 of us had not been there I would have chalked it up to imagination. The person/being was fully physical and solid, could even hear their footsteps on the leaves.

Definatly something I would like to learn :) I know we can shift slightly naturally, or at least shift people's perceptions of us, but learning how to do it physically would be handy. Judging by people's reactions, I might have done it once, but I will never know. But hey what else is there to do with those quiet nights but try to learn how to shapeshift .
