It is said that when at crossroads the devil may appear to make a deal. In what situations would/does he appear? also is it possible that a demon comes to make a deal? and thirdly what would your trade be if you decided to make one?
Eh...To me that whole saying is not to be taken literally...I think it just means, whenever we reach a crossroad in our lives we have to make choices, and the choices we make will affect us in the long run so we need to choose wisely...
Crossroads - Making an important decision in our life - Choosing the path of good or evil - Evil being the Demons way
I have to go with Morrigon on this one. That has always been my interpretation.
I totally believe that you are your own demon, so the choices you are making are with yourself.
i guess the devil can work in weird ways to not just god...but my deal i would make i have no clue...
oh i've studied this quite a lot before. you have to go to a crossroad for seven days. all at the exact time and for all day. whatever it is that you want to do, you must do while you're there. for example, if you want to play the guitar very well, each of those seven days you should practice playing the guitar. on the seventh day you will see a black figure coming at lightning speed towards you and once it does you will play the guitar perfectly.
I don't know much about how and who comes to give you a deal but If I were able to make one it would be to be able to go back and fix my financial troubles.... cheesey I know but they are kicking my ass right now....
I agree with xtcraver this is a big legend with blues singers...
I would not say what shape he might take, or how elaborate the ploy. However, the outcome is a simple one, "continue living" an easy decision made november 24 1989
The price is always going to be too high. Any deal with a demon involves losing your soul.
at the crossroads in your life I beleive that you must choose which road to choose and you will at the end know if you choose wisley
i agree with bigjuggs. we decide which path to follow. im sure the devil is there to taunt and tease us into going his way. but its up to us in the long run. there is no playing with the devil, no matter how amazing it might seem, he always gets what he wants, and we do not. but thats my opinion.
i think the devil would send a lesser demon first....but i agree with morrigon that it's more metaphorical (if that is a word) than literal.
I think I'd be greedy and ask for endless cash.
The crossroads being evil is a Christian creation - IMO. However, there is a story related to witchcraft.
Hecate, the Crone, of the Triple Moon goddess is also the Roman goddess and protector of triple cross roads - a fork in the road. Later, witches began to look at Hecate as patroness. Hecate is also Goddess of witchcraft and the underworld. It was a legend in the Middle Ages that witches would gather at crossroads. There is a road in England referred to as Witches Crossing.
I was hopeing someone would talk about Hecate. She is the Queen of the Witches, Goddess of Dark, and some of us still put offerings at the X-rds in her honor.
Hecate Night is on or about Nov. 16th. Depending on your local...

I think morrigon says it best. its all about choices, the ones put before you, the ones you make, they all play a specific part in life, so you should be careful how you choose.
I believe it is about choice as well...when do we come to a point where we might be facing the crossroads? All the time...I don't beleive it ever stops. We make decisions every single day.....granted there are the times that for some of us our lives have come to an all time low, and that can possibly have us facing the crossroads of deep decision making
Robert Johnson was belived to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the gift of mastering the guitar...
Life altering choices are an every day business. Even the littlest decision can have a great impact on your life. So waiting for the devil at crossroads is a bit useless.
I don't think the crossroads is a literal one but a crossroads in your life. The devil making a deal is just you choice of whether you want to do something with your life or not. If it were literal I don't think I would want to make a trade cause the devil usually wants your soul and you never get that much time and being a tricky fellow he is likely to give you something you didn't want like wanting to be rich someone will have to die for that to happen then you get the inheritance
Bobby Johnson the blues man sold his soul at the crossroads When his time had come to pay up for his tortured but undisputable success, Johnson began including elusions to his dealings at that country crossroad.
Toward his last days, he was alleged to have been delerious with panic attacks involving "hellhounds on his tail". He medically viewed as suffering mental deterioration due to undisclosed reasons. He was said to have hallucinations of his pursuer until his death.
Of course, the backwater stories are always more interesting, right? If the Lord can work in mysterious ways, who's to say the devil has figured out his own variation of the same concept?
ok, that's true. But i know people, me included that wouldn't have minded some devil helping me to make a decision. But then again, who says they didn't. Haven't sold my soul yet, but i think the devil or some minion does push us towards certain choices in life.
All these backwater towns have their secrets... I believe in the supernatural and the possibility of interation with the living...it must get lonely in the underworld, right? So, trick a soul to sell itself for all the small print and BOOM a new minion or whatever. Evil exists in every shape or size, people are susceptible to seeing what they want to so...why not? Just a thought...
Not sure if thats true or not...never happened to me, but i dont think i'd make a deal with the devil...unless he could make me & all my loved ones immortal Vampires....lol
Can't say I've heard of this. But like someone else said, I believe that you are you're own demon.
I think it's just a kind of metaphor as to wether you choose the right path or not
I have to go with morrigon on this one.. i think the expression came from people who made wrong choices needing someone other than themselves to blame
I'll be honest, I agree with the general consensus here. I believe the "crossroads" is a personal situation and will come at many different times in one's life and the deal with the devil is the decision you make.
We all have a lot of hard decisions facing us on a daily basis; perhaps this was just one more way of trying to keep us in line, morally and ethically.
I would agree it is just a saying. But lets pretend we take it litterally for a minute, just to answered the questions this saying rises.
What would I deal with a demon? And what could the demon come and offer me to make me think it would be a deal?
Well first lets say the demon comes and offers me the deal of having, unlimited ressources, in everyting, money, love, intelligence, ect... This would actually make me think....but also make me wonder why such a generous offer? Smell like a rat there. I think I would not accept it
see thats what I was thinking if he did offer you what seems like a good deal you know there is a catch some where so what would you want to lose for nothing ?????
isn't that when the devil comes out on one shoulder and the angel comes on the other one and tries help you decide between your choices lol
This has already been said in this thread, but to me, it the crossroads is where you find yourself in life and the decision for which road to take.
Pepper also came up with the great pagan legends about the crossroads as well.
every moment is a crossroads....every breath you take is a concious choice
WildChild isn't a crossroad more a time for a major decision then just everyday decisions?
honestly...in my opinion...i do not believe in the devil...or the "depicted" hell. So, i must agree with the others...i suppose it means making a choice...right vs. wrong
being at a crossroads in your life is always a difficult decision... but to consider the offer of the "devil"... one has to believe in it first... which I do not.
The point is really that it si a life-altering event. The calaiber of event and the acts to follow are entirely up to the deciosion-caker at that time of choie.
it is about not being sure which way to go.. being "Stuck, at a crossroads"
it is a term that describes the current situation, of having to make a difficult choice.
theres only one way to go at a crossroads for me, and its not the wrong way
I agree with silver1 on this, i have to say that you have to always try and take the correct path at that time of your life, even if it means pain and suffering to others, you just have to put yourself first in some cases as you can always come back to those that you hurt in the past and get a second chance with them.........as far as the devil at the crossroads is concerned, i do not think it is true, you cannot make a straight deal with the devil, there will always be a twist in it that favours him.....
You make choices in your life, sometimes they are not the right choices, we all make mistakes.
You make the choices that you think will better suit you, what makes you happy. You're in control.
I believe this tale to be more an old superstition than anything.
There is another that ruled cross roads and that was the messenger of the greek gods Hermes.. just a little trivia.
As for making deals with the devil, well I don't make deals with demons, if the devil did exist why would he take time out for a measly little soul like mine...
If I come to a crossroads in my life, I take time to know my options and go by how I feel, signs around me at the time and what my dreams are telling me. I ask the goddess for help if I feel stuck and unsure as to what to do, and no matter what I decide I stick to it.
me i wouldent make a deal or trade anything with them , because when they give you something in some way they will try to screw you over in the long run
I forgot to mention that many greek and roman oracles were performed at crossroads. So perhaps the crossing of two roads had a strong religious significance and there for some sort of power was found at such junctions. Maybe I am wrong and its not an old superstition after all.
all i know is when you come to the cross road and you want to be able to call the devil or the deal maker you must bury something of value to you. and usually what they say you get it in return the deal maker gets your soul after a said amount of time. some try to get more life for a loved one and then say after 7 years yours is taken and they get your soul.
My answer is like all the others in ways.
Since there is no devil, no demons can appear on crossroads. What is evil is the intentions of humans, some of which is subjectional, as others' views of what is evil and what is not, differs from person to person.
Crossroads would definitely be interpreted as having to make a decision as to which path you choose. We all have to make decisions. As far as the Devil, well, I don't believe in him, but they say we all have our demons.
I don't hold Satan in my beliefs, but just for the fun of what if's, I'll answer. The appearance would definitely have to be at a life changing event, for example death of self or loved ones or losing everything that you held dear...A subordinate could possibly make the deal, but would have to be in his favor. For my deal, it would depend upon what was being destroyed in my life....In the sake of having an answer, I would make a deal to be able to have full custody and the means to provide for my children.
And after this age old myth that is just symbolic of choices... every time there is a movie - someone grabs ahold of it as truth. In the 80s there was a Ralph Macchio movie called 'The Crossroads' where he was a guitar player- he made a 'deal'... and he had a guitar play-off much like 'The Devil went down to Georgia', only he played against Stevie Vai as the devil's rep :D
I do not believe that the devil would appear to just any one. I believe that a demon would appear if you knew the right incantations or what ever.
I agree with the others who have said that the crossroads refer to the decision of good or bad. Thats my take on it though, one can't be certain.
wow im impressed by all the imput. I have taken a lot of this in and it makes so much sense to me now. thank you all. ^_~
With that, I feel that this is a good point to end this discussion.
