who else use herbs and spices, and if so what kind , and for what reasons
mine are mainly used for my tea and for my tarro cards
I use all kinds of herbs, the ones that i use depends on the spell i am doing, there are so many to choose from that i use my own mixture, i find the spells work better.
I use herbs, Alot of lavendar, mostly mint, mint heals when ur sick,I have never used wild grass,. i grow my own herbs, Terro cards I dont use much , I use mugwort to cleanse things
Herbs are wonderful and really underestimated...
I'm not into doing spells myself, but experimenting and trying new herbal teas? always.
Spices and herbs are wonderful, not only for spell casting but in general, so many people do not look in their own backyards for the wonderful properties nature has given.
herbs and spices seem to be a last resort if everything seems to go wrong
i would try mint, nutmeg, rosemary, and sometimes ginger
I am learning more about using herbs and spices in spells... there are so many different properties that each have. Will be learning for some time..
the only herb I use is rosemary, but always with the oil or lavander and rosemary oil it enhance my skills, also I notice sage oil too
If the oppertunity presents itself I use any sort of herb that I think will be justified in its usage in the particular spell or rite Im working. But its not so much the herbs im going after but their correspondences which thanks to the work of the several wonderful authors for such things is possible to research fairly easy.
Things I reccomend for use in herbal magicks,
Incense, Oils and Brews by Scott Cunningham

the herbal- from the 15th century....avail from amazon for 100 bucks,
Wicca handbook...i forget the author
those are just some of the sources that I find useful when cross referencing herbs for a spell or rite. Hope it helps.
I use sage for smudging or cleansing and I like lavender for relaxing and meditation the rest I choose based on my intent.
I use various types of hot spices cause I like things more spicy. Mostly I use it for cooking ,such as cayenne pepper 0ne of my favorites.
I don't know much about spices and herbs. The only thing that I really know is lavender for luck, rosemary for love/passion, garlic for healing, um...yeah, that's about it. lol Does anybody use a certain kind of incense for different spells???
every spell, every rite gets its own incense. Preferably handmade.
I believe that herbs and spices are important in the use of magic.
I myself use spices and herbs in my cooking. And for me, my cooking is one way for me to cast a spell, because it's there to nourish my family, and to help me focus.
The main herbs I use, as my herbal rack is not full yet with all the spices I intend to use, are sage, basil and oregano..of various different blends. Also rosemary.
If anyone knows of a fairly cheap place to buy spices/herbs in bulk, please inbox me, and I'll see if I can check them out.
I use herbs and spices for potions and for some spells.
My favorites is:
Lavender - simply brilliant
Safran - wonderful to work with
Sage and rosemary - mostly used to make my own incense.

a couple of websites that i like to refer to when using herbs and i use many for many different reasons
I don't use herbs and spices for spells so much as I mostly use them for healing and relaxation instead.
I use herbs but only for tea. I dont relly work with spells... if I did... I would use alot of diff. herbs. My mother luvs herbs so she has a big garden full!
LUV: Des.tiny
I use herbs and spices mainly for cooking but also to make tea. It is nice to make your own tea, I think it tastes better than the store bought.
We do herbal and plant displays as part of our medieval shows. My favourite authentic but alternative use is elder sprigs hanging over the food table - used to deter flies lol
I will tend to burn clove for negativity and jasmine for relaxation. Lavender I use when I get a normal bath which helps you sleep better and is used a lot for spiritual healing.
Have you ever used sage to cleanse the room you are in? Many negative energies surround all of us as we speak. I also use fireweed to burn the lies around me. If you have used this, it does help. Tell me when you use forget-me-not for love spells...
Dark Greeting's,
I use many herbs and spices, for spells, oils incense, teas. My Grams was a Mid-Wife herbalist and my other Grams was Roma Gypsy. So I grew up knowing how to use, gather, and dry them.As I now live in the desert I am learning how to use the plants here.It is great fun,and I make paper from herbs and write spells ect.on the paper with the herbs used,it makes a great Grimore.
Dark Blessing's,
KA
I use spices and herbs that go with the spell I'm doing . There are books that give you this kind of info.
It depends on the ritual, but I do like to use cloves alot just because I find the smell soothing.
Not something I am experienced with, but a note of caution that some herbs can be harmful if consumed.
When I can I use herbs, a lot of Dill, Lavendar, and such. I work best with candle magick tho.
the signifigance of the herb and or spice depends on what you are attemting to do.
Bingo, each herb has a relationship to each of the five elements. The fifth being the spirit. The simplest relationships are to fire, the hot peppers. Wormwood the main ingredient other than alcohol in absinthe also is a fire related herb because of its ability to bring fire to the drinker. There are many tables of correspondences for use in spell work. Some disagree with each other. At that point the practitioner must decide an herbs relationship to the element or the deity addressed by study and intuition.
I have used herbs, not one in particular but i have used some, i have mainly used them in charm bags, and other than charm bags i do not really use them that much, and just like every thing else herbs are just a tool to help with spells they do not make a spell they help a spell...
I've used alot of herbs in charm bags as well as incense.. both while working spells and just for relaxation. Mostly Sage, Lavender, Jasmine and Rosemary.
Basil - for energy and vitality
i used to use Alehoof too, but i can't get it up here. i've also used White Bryony, Woody Nightshade, Mugwort, Nutmeg, Cinquefoil, and certain fungi.
True StarDust , but there are different herbs & spices you can substitute if you don't have what the spell calls for.
I put salt and a little water and put my candle in it after I dress it. I use sage to cleanse the room I go to the very tip top and go all around the room. The I put salt around my spell area. I use mugwort to cleanse my crystals and gems. When I cook and use spices I always stir counterclock wise.
I use sage as a cleansing herb. Whenever I move I cleanse my area with sage. Also during full moon ritual I will use sage to cleanse myself.
I have used many herb in amulet bags of protection. Right at the moment I just can't remember what I used as it has been a while since I have done any protection spells.
this is funny! Why? Because there are as many spells as there are words to create them, and gods to attribute them to, and spirits (good/evil), who's numcers are used...Herbs are no different...What you use to heal with, you would not use to curse...what you use for protection, you would not use is you were trying to break the protection around someone who has wronged you...Easy answer is that for as many Herbs that there are, there are spells that go hand in hand...start studying you Herbs...333
LOL I didn't say I use sage for protection. and yes you are absolutely right. Different herbs have different strengths/weakenesses best suiting whatever you are accomplishing with your spells and/or magick.
I mainly use sage, sweetgrass, and cedar for purification and protection.
I only have a very small garden in my backyard, Feverfew and Chamomille to name a few.
I dont grow my own herbs. I by but i keep them in stolke and if i dont have them i steel them from my grandma. But for spells. When i do hoodoo or voodoo i use alot of jeazbell root or sweet grass. In witch craft i use rosemary, white sage, lavender, tyhm, pepper, myrrh, basil, dragons blood, just to name a few.
I use a bunch of them...if anyone knows where I can get real foxglove please let me know...most of this stuff on the internet is fake.
alot of people use spices nd herbs in everyday life sometimes these people use them more than modern day medicine.
do you count potions? i use millefoil (yarrow) tea to cure colds and fevers.
I like to make a crown out of Wormwood when I'm using my spirit board. I'll also burn a sage smudge stick to keep evil spirits at bay.
Forgive my ignorance, but is a spirit board anything like a Ouija board?
yes, there are different kinds. I have Ouija, Pathfinder, and Psychic Circle.
more options, than just "yes" "no" and the alphabet... oh and "I don't know", lol. The Psychic Circle has the same as an Oijia board, plus other words, like "take" "listen" "far", and planetary signs, along with colors and other things. The Pathfinder has the same as an Oijia board plus a lot of the same things as a Psychic Circle, but it has a native american theme with other options. Look them up online.

I use Herb's but i don't use them for spell's if you know what I mean :) haha
For my magical spells of magical wizardstuff i use...straight marijuana and like..silvia and the spell like makes me go to like alternate dimensions n shit xD
nah but really i got a great recipe for weed curry!
dont know what the fuck ya'll are talkin about though xD
herbs are a great way to focus your mind to bring about the desired change
sage and sea salt are good not only for protection but for cleansing as well
I noticed alot of people use Lavender. It's been recently suggested that Lavender can lead to gynecomastia in boys though no reason has been given. My thought would be that it suppresses the testosterone early in the child's development so that later in life he has a level of estrogen that can not be kept in check by the testosterone.
As for the herbs I use - they're not for magic. I use them for healing. Calendula is great for bruises (especially when mixed with St Johns Wort). Ginger is good for an upset stomach. Stinging nettles, when used fresh, works well on arthritic joints (two arthritic knees - trust me I know). Valerian in low doses for sleeping and belladonna in low doses for baby teething.
my wqife is an herbalist.. I have seen many things healed thru her will and herbs
I recently completed a course on Magickal Herbology and found much to my delight that you can use so many different herbs for so many different things. You aren't restricted to just lavender for peace or chamomile for calming.
My herb closet is getting larger each day as I find something new to add to the collection. But a word to the wise...please use glass to store your herbs, plastic tends to absorb the natural oils from the herb and causes the potency to be short lived.
If you're looking for magical herbal info - I suggest Scott Cunningham. Very smart man, pick up one of his books. If you're looking for modern herbalism for healthcare, Clayton College of Natural Health is a good place to start. If it's something you want to do for a career - they are an acredited college and are eligible for Sallie Mae loans.
if you want cleanseing stuff...use fuckin soap...not..sea salt..crackhead.
i was talkin to killer187 particularly but your welcome xD
do you guys really think this works though? well you must...nevermind take that as a rhetorical question.
Herbs for magical practice? Like waving a wand and all that? No I don't think it works. For healing, calming, and mind altering - most definitely.
Oh thanks for clarifying that..like serously haha. yeah thats pretty neat so your like..useing natural things rather than medicine? thats really neat and respectable in my opinion hah. i thought you were talking about spells and shit..some were not on this particular one i dont think..
yeah, a friend of mine Kurt uses Mugwort, Deadly Nightshade and skull cap for his alchemical brews.
Mostly it just gets you f*cked lol.... ;)
Herbs and plants have more value than just spicing up your recipies. Many have healing properties and medicinal purposes that allow an individual to use natural remedies instead of pharmacutical creations.
Well theyre alot more valuable than just cooking, I use alot for cleaning and sometimes makeup.
:)
And while I agree with that, I still think that modern Western Medicine has an excellent place in health care - I just wish it was more accepting of the medicine it was derived from. It's only been the last fifty years or so that we've been searching for a silver bullet *wink* to fix all things. In doing that, Western Medicine has eliminated herbalism and subjected it to ridicule and harsh criticism. I think a safe blend between the two is best.
if you goto Azure Green.com you will find a very large selection of herbs for sale and many, many books on their uses...333
the "silver bullet" is symptomatic of the greed and laziness that plagues Western Medicine. They want a wonder drug that will cure all things so they don't have to bother getting the correct diagnosis.
"oh yes - you've got lurgy - take two of these, you'll be fine in the morning". they treat the ailment rather than the patient. Alternative Medicine is much more holistic.
i use for spell and other things rose, mandrake, cinnoman, comfry, red clover, clove, oat straw, suger, and many more!
i have be in the craft for as long as i can remember and i love doing what i do when i feel the need to do it.
I use mugwort and lavender for migrain headaches as to other things I use well that depends on what I am doing but for healing I mainly use olive oil. I do more healing than I do anything. I also do a lot of protection but I have a gift for that which I do not know how to explain.
this is an awesome thread.. very informative. i am wanting to start learning these processes and with the information in this thread has boosted it now to wanting to learn more.
Many of our modern medicines started from plant sources. Aspirin was discovered when Indians were asked why they chewed willow bark. It helped with headaches and fevers. Willow bark was found to have aspirin in it. Herbs contain medicinal substances that can perform many of the functions of modern medications.
I use many different herbs for many things, and i have many books on the subject. I just started getting into herbology, thanks to a vegan friend, and i find it fits in perfectly with my spell work!
I can't really remember, it's been a while since I worked with herbs. I remember a bit.
I've used rosemary, cinnamon, and sage to create bath sachets for relaxation. I also used rosemary and sage for my tarot.
Peppermint oil for stress.
basil is good for protection and a very nice plant to grow
i have used some for my spells but mostly still learning about them and oils to havent used them yet.
i use all sorts
i use bella donna in very very small amounts in my tea when i can't sleep and need to relax
I use salt, pepper, garlic salt, all spice, cayenne pepper and chili powder.
for some reason i dont think she meant cooking spices lol
ill stick with black and chaos cuz i dont i like wicca migick
I use medicinal herbs. Goldenseal actually really kills strep and staff bacteria.
Echinacea, ( colds & flus) black Walnut, ( anything itchy) Horehound ( helping to clear your chest)~ All are good for what ails the body, so it is just as good for cleansing energy in your environment.
Echinacea should be used to prevent cold and flu's, as it boosts the immune system thereby better enabling it to withstand common germs and viruses - as opposed to using it once you get sick. Chicken soup with plenty of cooking spices and herbs is great for a cold though. If you want to think in terms of "magic", you could label it a potion.
It'a all potions to me~ you cure what ails you.
Since I have a son who is allergic to antibiotics I had to find herbal cures. The Echinacea Angustfolia along with Goldenseal will cure an upper respiratory infection, and take care of a fever associated with the flue.
just latly ib been trying iboga openly sold in england but banned in usa france and what not.
this herb has held of organised religion with all it's money and backing.
you realy do see dead people lol
"The Catholic church is a beautiful theory for Sunday, the iboga on the contrary is the practice of everyday living. In church, they speak of God, with iboga, you live God"
thats a quote from the area that uses this herb.
That's interesting about the Echinacea and Golden Seal. Unfortunately, books and reading can only take you so far. I've never found it necessary to actually have to use it as a cold remedy (but then that just might be because I prefer chicken).
Wolfsbohne,
Do you have a recipe for your chicken soup?
Also,
what is this ibolga? I've never heard of it.
